Approximate Shifted Combinatorial Optimization
Shifted combinatorial optimization is a new nonlinear optimization framework, which is a broad extension of standard combinatorial optimization, involving the choice of several feasible solutions at a time. It captures well studied and diverse problems ranging from congestive to partitioning problems. In particular, every standard combinatorial optimization problem has its shifted counterpart, which is typically much harder. Here we initiate a study of approximation algorithms for this broad optimization framework.

We examine the relationship between the (double) Schubert polynomials of Billey-Haiman and Ikeda-Mihalcea-Naruse and the (double) theta and eta polynomials of Buch-Kresch-Tamvakis and Wilson from the perspective of Weyl group invariants. We obtain generators for the kernel of the natural map from the corresponding ring of Schubert polynomials to the (equivariant) cohomology ring of symplectic and orthogonal flag manifolds.

We consider a finite simplicial complex $K$ together with its successive barycentric subdivisions $Sd^d(K), d\geq0,$ and study the expected topology of a random subcomplex in $Sd^d(K), d\gg0$. We get asymptotic upper and lower bounds for the expected Betti numbers of those subcomplexes, together with the average Morse inequalities and expected Euler characteristic.
On The Communication Complexity of High-Dimensional Permutations
We study the multiparty communication complexity of high dimensional permutations, in the Number On the Forehead (NOF) model. This model is due to Chandra, Furst and Lipton (CFL) who also gave a nontrivial protocol for the Exactly-n problem where three players receive integer inputs and need to decide if their inputs sum to a given integer $n$. There is a considerable body of literature dealing with the same problem, where $(\mathbb{N},+)$ is replaced by some other abelian group. Our work can be viewed as a far-reaching extension of this line of work.
We show that the known lower bounds for that group-theoretic problem apply to all high dimensional permutations. We introduce new proof techniques that appeal to recent advances in Additive Combinatorics and Ramsey theory. We reveal new and unexpected connections between the NOF communication complexity of high dimensional permutations and a variety of well known and thoroughly studied problems in combinatorics.
Previous protocols for Exactly-n all rely on the construction of large sets of integers without a 3-term arithmetic progression. No direct algorithmic protocol was previously known for the problem, and we provide the first such algorithm. This suggests new ways to significantly improve the CFL protocol.
Many new open questions are presented throughout.

We introduce canonical measures on a locally finite simplicial complex $K$ and study their asymptotic behavior under infinitely many barycentric subdivisions. We also compute the face polynomial of the asymptotic link and dual block of a simplex in the $d^{th}$ barycentric subdivision $Sd^d(K)$ of $K$, $d\gg0$. It is almost everywhere constant. When $K$ is finite, we study the limit face polynomial of $Sd^d(K)$ after F.Brenti-V.Welker and E.Delucchi-A.Pixton-L.Sabalka.
A Note on Multiparty Communication Complexity and the Hales-Jewett Theorem

For integers $n$ and $k$, the density Hales-Jewett number $c_{n,k}$ is defined as the maximal size of a subset of $[k]^n$ that contains no combinatorial line. We show that for $k \ge 3$ the density Hales-Jewett number $c_{n,k}$ is equal to the maximal size of a cylinder intersection in the problem $Part_{n,k}$ of testing whether $k$ subsets of $[n]$ form a partition. It follows that the communication complexity, in the Number On the Forehead (NOF) model, of $Part_{n,k}$, is equal to the minimal size of a partition of $[k]^n$ into subsets that do not contain a combinatorial line. Thus, the bound in \cite{chattopadhyay2007languages} on $Part_{n,k}$ using the Hales-Jewett theorem is in fact tight, and the density Hales-Jewett number can be thought of as a quantity in communication complexity. This gives a new angle to this well studied quantity.
As a simple application we prove a lower bound on $c_{n,k}$, similar to the lower bound in \cite{polymath2010moser} which is roughly $c_{n,k}/k^n \ge \exp(-O(\log n)^{1/\lceil \log_2 k\rceil})$. This lower bound follows from a protocol for $Part_{n,k}$. It is interesting to better understand the communication complexity of $Part_{n,k}$ as this will also lead to the better understanding of the Hales-Jewett number. The main purpose of this note is to motivate this study.

It is written to an audience interested in interactions between representations of algebras, algebraic geometry, and commutative algebra. A few open problems resulting from the work are also explained.

An injective coloring of a graph is a vertex coloring where two vertices with common neighbor receive distinct colors. The minimum integer $k$ that $G$ has a $k-$injective coloring is called injective chromatic number of $G$ and denoted by $χ_i(G)$. In this paper, the injective chromatic number of outerplanar graphs with maximum degree $Δ$ and girth $g$ is studied. It is shown that for every outerplanar graph, $χ_i(G)\leq Δ+2$, and this bound is tight. Then, it is proved that for outerplanar graphs with $Δ=3$, $χ_i(G)\leq Δ+1$ and the bound is tight for outerplanar graphs of girth three and $4$. Finally, it is proved that, the injective chromatic number of $2-$connected outerplanar graphs with $Δ=3$, $g\geq 6$ and $Δ\geq 4$, $g\geq 4$ is equal to $Δ$.
New Factor Pairs for Factorizations of Lambert Series Generating Functions
We prove several new variants of the Lambert series factorization theorem established in the first article "Generating special arithmetic functions by Lambert series factorizations" by Merca and Schmidt (2017). Several characteristic examples of our new results are presented in the article to motivate the formulations of the generalized factorization theorems. Applications of these new factorization results include new identities involving the Euler partition function and the generalized sum-of-divisors functions, the Möbius function, Euler's totient function, the Liouville lambda function, von Mangoldt's lambda function, and the Jordan totient function.

In 2006, Kenyon and Okounkov computed the moduli space of Harnack curves of degree $d$ in $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^2$. We generalize to any projective toric surface some of the techniques used there. More precisely, we show that the moduli space $\mathcal{H}_Δ$ of Harnack curves with Newton polygon $Δ$ is diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^{m-3}\times\mathbb{R}_{\geq0}^{n+g-m}$ where $Δ$ has $m$ edges, $g$ interior lattice points and $n$ boundary lattice points, solving a conjecture of Crétois and Lang. Additionally, we use abstract tropical curves to construct a compactification of this moduli space by adding points that correspond to collections of curves that can be patchworked together to produce a curve in $\mathcal{H}_Δ$. This compactification comes with a natural stratification with the same poset as the secondary polytope of $Δ$.

An infinite real sequence $\{a_n\}$ is called an invariant sequence of the first (resp., second) kind if $a_n=\sum_{k=0}^n {n \choose k} (-1)^k a_k$ (resp., $a_n=\sum_{k=n}^{\infty} {k \choose n} (-1)^k a_k$). We review and investigate invariant sequences of the first and second kinds, and study their relationships using similarities of Pascal-type matrices and their eigenspaces.
Progressions and Paths in Colorings of $\mathbb Z$
A $\textit{ladder}$ is a set $S \subseteq \mathbb Z^+$ such that any finite coloring of $\mathbb Z$ contains arbitrarily long monochromatic progressions with common difference in $S$. Van der Waerden's theorem famously asserts that $\mathbb Z^+$ itself is a ladder. We also discuss variants of ladders, namely $\textit{accessible}$ and $\textit{walkable}$ sets, which are sets $S$ such that any coloring of $\mathbb Z$ contains arbitrarily long (for accessible sets) or infinite (for walkable sets) monochromatic sequences with consecutive differences in $S$. We show that sets with upper density 1 are ladders and walkable. We also show that all directed graphs with infinite chromatic number are accessible, and reduce the bound on the walkability order of sparse sets from 3 to 2, making it tight.
Defective 3-Paintability of Planar Graphs

A $d$-defective $k$-painting game on a graph $G$ is played by two players: Lister and Painter. Initially, each vertex is uncolored and has $k$ tokens. In each round, Lister marks a chosen set $M$ of uncolored vertices and removes one token from each marked vertex. In response, Painter colors vertices in a subset $X$ of $M$ which induce a subgraph $G[X]$ of maximum degree at most $d$. Lister wins the game if at the end of some round there is an uncolored vertex that has no more tokens left. Otherwise, all vertices eventually get colored and Painter wins the game. We say that $G$ is $d$-defective $k$-paintable if Painter has a winning strategy in this game. In this paper we show that every planar graph is 3-defective 3-paintable and give a construction of a planar graph that is not 2-defective 3-paintable.
An Upper Bound of 7n/6 for the Minimum Size 2EC on Cubic 3-Edge Connected Graphs
In this paper, we study the minimum size 2-edge connected spanning subgraph problem (henceforth 2EC) and show that every 3-edge connected cubic graph G=(V, E), with n=|V| allows a 2EC solution for G of size at most 7n/6, which improves upon Boyd, Iwata and Takazawa's guarantee of 6n/5.

We introduce the concept of $r$-equilateral $m$-gons. We prove the existence of $r$-equilateral $p$-gons in $\mathbb R^d$ if $r<d$ and the existence of equilateral $p$-gons in the image of continuous injective maps $f:S^d\to \mathbb R^{d+1}$. Our ideas are based mainly in the paper of Y. Soibelman \cite{soibelman}, in which the topological Borsuk number of $\mathbb{R}^2$ is calculated by means of topological methods and the paper of P. Blagojević and G. Ziegler \cite{blagojevictetrahedra} where Fadell-Husseini index is used for solving a problem related to the topological Borsuk problem for $\mathbb{R}^3$.

It is possible to define mixing properties for subshifts according to the intensity which allows to concatenate two rectangular blocks. We study the interplay between this intensity and computational properties. In particular we prove that there exists linearly block gluing subshift of finite type which are aperiodic and that all right-recursively enumerable positive number can be realized as entropy of linearly block gluing Z 2-subshift of finite type. Like linearly block gluing imply transitivity, this last point answer a question asked in [HM10] about the characterization of the entropy of transitive subshift of finite type.

We give a classification of four-circulant singly even self-dual $[60,30,d]$ codes for $d=10$ and $12$. These codes are used to construct extremal singly even self-dual $[60,30,12]$ codes with weight enumerator for which no extremal singly even self-dual code was previously known to exist. From extremal singly even self-dual $[60,30,12]$ codes, we also construct extremal singly even self-dual $[58,29,10]$ codes with weight enumerator for which no extremal singly even self-dual code was previously known to exist. Finally, we give some restriction on the possible weight enumerators of certain singly even self-dual codes with shadow of minimum weight $1$.
Vertex-disjoint directed cycles of prescribed length in tournaments with given minimum out-degree
The Bermond-Thomassen conjecture states that, for any positive integer $r$, a digraph of minimum out-degree at least $2r-1$ contains at least $r$ vertex-disjoint directed cycles. In 2014, Bang-Jensen, Bessy and Thomass\' e proved the conjecture for tournaments. In 2010, Lichiardopol conjectured that a tournament $T$ with minimum out-degree at least $(q-1)r-1$ contains at least $r$ vertex-disjoint $q$-cycles, where integer $q\geq3$ and $r\geq1$. In this paper, we address Lichiardopol's conjecture affirmatively. In particular, the case $q=3$ implies Bermond-Thomassen conjecture for tournaments.
Ehrhart tensor polynomials

The notion of Ehrhart tensor polynomials, a natural generalization of the Ehrhart polynomial of a lattice polytope, was recently introduced by Ludwig and Silverstein. We initiate a study of their coefficients. In the vector and matrix cases, we give Pick-type formulas in terms of triangulations of a lattice polygon. As our main tool, we introduce $h^r$-tensor polynomials, extending the notion of the Ehrhart $h^\ast$-polynomial, and, for matrices, investigate their coefficients for positive semidefiniteness. In contrast to the usual $h^\ast$-polynomial, the coefficients are in general not monotone with respect to inclusion. Nevertheless, we are able to prove positive semidefiniteness in dimension two. Based on computational results, we conjecture positive semidefiniteness of the coefficients in higher dimensions. Furthermore, we generalize Hibi's palindromic theorem for reflexive polytopes to $h^r$-tensor polynomials and discuss possible future research directions.
