We show that for any permutation $ω$, the increasing flip graph on acyclic pipe dreams with exiting permutation $ω$ is a lattice quotient of the interval $[e,ω]$ of the weak order. We then discuss conjectural generalizations of this result to acyclic facets of subword complexes on arbitrary finite Coxeter groups.

Let $L$ be a finite lattice. An Ungar move sends an element $x\in L$ to the meet of $\{x\}\cup T$, where $T$ is a subset of the set of elements covered by $x$. We introduce the following Ungar game. Starting at the top element of $L$, two players -- Atniss and Eeta -- take turns making nontrivial Ungar moves; the first player who cannot do so loses the game. Atniss plays first. We say $L$ is an Atniss win (respectively, Eeta win) if Atniss (respectively, Eeta) has a winning strategy in the Ungar game on $L$. We first prove that the number of principal order ideals in the weak order on $S_n$ that are Eeta wins is $O(0.95586^nn!)$. We then consider a broad class of intervals in Young's lattice that includes all principal order ideals, and we characterize the Eeta wins in this class; we deduce precise enumerative results concerning order ideals in rectangles and type-$A$ root posets. We also characterize and enumerate principal order ideals in Tamari lattices that are Eeta wins. Finally, we conclude with some open problems and a short discussion of the computational complexity of Ungar games.

We introduce the Ungarian Markov chain ${\bf U}_L$ associated to a finite lattice $L$. The states of this Markov chain are the elements of $L$. When the chain is in a state $x\in L$, it transitions to the meet of $\{x\}\cup T$, where $T$ is a random subset of the set of elements covered by $x$. We focus on estimating $\mathcal E(L)$, the expected number of steps of ${\bf U}_L$ needed to get from the top element of $L$ to the bottom element of $L$. Using direct combinatorial arguments, we provide asymptotic estimates when $L$ is the weak order on the symmetric group $S_n$ and when $L$ is the $n$-th Tamari lattice. When $L$ is distributive, the Markov chain ${\bf U}_L$ is equivalent to an instance of the well-studied random process known as last-passage percolation with geometric weights. One of our main results states that if $L$ is a trim lattice, then $\mathcal E(L)\leq\mathcal E(\text{spine}(L))$, where $\text{spine}(L)$ is a specific distributive sublattice of $L$ called the spine of $L$. Combining this lattice-theoretic theorem with known results about last-passage percolation yields a powerful method for proving upper bounds for $\mathcal E(L)$ when $L$ is trim. We apply this method to obtain uniform asymptotic upper bounds for the expected number of steps in the Ungarian Markov chains of Cambrian lattices of classical types and the Ungarian Markov chains of $ν$-Tamari lattices.
Lattice operads and operad filtrations
We elaborate on the notion of a filtration of an operad defined in terms of a lattice-valued operad serving as an indexing object. That covers ordinary integer-indexed filtrations of associative algebras and operads as a special case, yet the notion appears to be natural enough to encompass examples of other kind as well. The characteristic property of lattice operads is that of a certain distributivity of partial compositions with respect to meets and joins. We observe that some well-known families of lattices of combinatorial origin, such as Tamari lattices, assemble to operads subject to this particular property. Other examples include an operad of integer paritions supported on Young's lattice, operads of integer compositions of types $A, B$ and $D$, which we relate to operads of regular polytopes. We discuss the partial compatibility of the weak order on the symmetric group with the structure of the permutations operad.

This is the first contribution of a sequence of papers introducing the notions of $s$-weak order and $s$-permutahedra, certain discrete objects that are indexed by a sequence of non-negative integers $s$. In this first paper, we concentrate purely on the combinatorics and lattice structure of the $s$-weak order, a partial order on certain decreasing trees which generalizes the classical weak order on permutations. In particular, we show that the $s$-weak order is a semidistributive and congruence uniform lattice, generalizing known results for the classical weak order on permutations.
Restricting the $s$-weak order to certain trees gives rise to the $s$-Tamari lattice, a sublattice which generalizes the classical Tamari lattice. We show that the $s$-Tamari lattice can be obtained as a quotient lattice of the $s$-weak order when $s$ has no zeros, and show that the $s$-Tamari lattices (for arbitrary $s$) are isomorphic to the $ν$-Tamari lattices of Préville-Ratelle and Viennot.
The underlying geometric structure of the $s$-weak order will be studied in a sequel of this paper, where we introduce the notion of $s$-permutahedra.

We study the partial orders induced on Wachs and signed Wachs permutations by the Bruhat and weak orders of the symmetric and hyperoctahedral groups. We show that these orders are graded, determine their rank function, characterize their ordering and covering relations, and compute their characteristic polynomials, when partially ordered by Bruhat order, and determine their structure explicitly when partially ordered by right weak order.

For each fully commutative permutation, we construct a "boolean core," which is the maximal boolean permutation in its principal order ideal under the right weak order. We partition the set of fully commutative permutations into the recently defined crowded and uncrowded elements, distinguished by whether or not their RSK insertion tableaux satisfy a sparsity condition. We show that a fully commutative element is uncrowded exactly when it shares the RSK insertion tableau with its boolean core. We present the dynamics of the right weak order on fully commutative permutations, with particular interest in when they change from uncrowded to crowded. In particular, we use consecutive permutation patterns and descents to characterize the minimal crowded elements under the right weak order.

In 1993, Savage, Squire, and West described an inductive construction for generating every acyclic orientation of a chordal graph exactly once, flipping one arc at a time. We provide two generalizations of this result. Firstly, we describe Gray codes for acyclic orientations of hypergraphs that satisfy a simple ordering condition, which generalizes the notion of perfect elimination order of graphs. This unifies the Savage-Squire-West construction with a recent algorithm for generating elimination trees of chordal graphs. Secondly, we consider quotients of lattices of acyclic orientations of chordal graphs, and we provide a Gray code for them, addressing a question raised by Pilaud. This also generalizes a recent algorithm for generating lattice congruences of the weak order on the symmetric group. Our algorithms are derived from the Hartung-Hoang-Mütze-Williams combinatorial generation framework, and they yield simple algorithms for computing Hamilton paths and cycles on large classes of polytopes, including chordal nestohedra and quotientopes. In particular, we derive an efficient implementation of the Savage-Squire-West construction. Along the way, we give an overview of old and recent results about the polyhedral and order-theoretic aspects of acyclic orientations of graphs and hypergraphs.
Maximal chain descent orders
This paper introduces a partial order on the maximal chains of any finite bounded poset $P$ which has a CL-labeling $λ$. We call this the maximal chain descent order induced by $λ$, denoted $P_λ(2)$. As a first example, letting $P$ be the Boolean lattice and $λ$ its standard EL-labeling gives $P_λ(2)$ isomorphic to the weak order of type A. We discuss in depth other seemingly well-structured examples: the max-min EL-labeling of the partition lattice gives maximal chain descent order isomorphic to a partial order on certain labeled trees, and particular cases of the linear extension EL-labelings of finite distributive lattices produce maximal chain descent orders isomorphic to partial orders on standard Young tableaux. We observe that the order relations which one might expect to be the cover relations, those given by the "polygon moves" whose transitive closure defines the maximal chain descent order, are not always cover relations. Several examples illustrate this fact. Nonetheless, we characterize the EL-labelings for which every polygon move gives a cover relation, and we prove many well known EL-labelings do have the expected cover relations. One motivation for $P_λ(2)$ is that its linear extensions give all of the shellings of the order complex of $P$ whose restriction maps are defined by the descents with respect to $λ$. This yields strictly more shellings of $P$ than the lexicographic ones induced by $λ$. Thus, the maximal chain descent order $P_λ(2)$ might be thought of as encoding the structure of the set of shellings induced by $λ$.

Extending the classical pop-stack sorting map on the lattice given by the right weak order on $S_n$, Defant defined, for any lattice $M$, a map $\mathsf{Pop}_{M}: M \to M$ that sends an element $x\in M$ to the meet of $x$ and the elements covered by $x$. In parallel with the line of studies on the image of the classical pop-stack sorting map, we study $\mathsf{Pop}_{M}(M)$ when $M$ is the weak order of type $B_n$, the Tamari lattice of type $B_n$, the lattice of order ideals of the root poset of type $A_n$, and the lattice of order ideals of the root poset of type $B_n$. In particular, we settle four conjectures proposed by Defant and Williams on the generating function \begin{equation*} \mathsf{Pop}(M; q) = \sum_{b \in \mathsf{Pop}_{M}(M)} q^{|\mathscr{U}_{M}(b)|}, \end{equation*} where $\mathscr{U}_{M}(b)$ is the set of elements of $M$ that cover $b$.

Let $W$ be a Coxeter group and let $Φ^+$ be its positive roots. A subset $B$ of $Φ^+$ is called biclosed if, whenever we have roots $α$, $β$ and $γ$ with $γ\in \mathbb{R}_{>0} α+ \mathbb{R}_{>0} β$, if $α$ and $β\in B$ then $γ\in B$ and, if $α$ and $β\not\in B$, then $γ\not\in B$. The finite biclosed sets are the inversion sets of the elements of $W$, and the containment between finite inversion sets is the weak order on $W$. Matthew Dyer suggested studying the poset of all biclosed subsets of $Φ^+$, ordered by containment, and conjectured that it is a complete lattice. As progress towards Dyer's conjecture, we classify all biclosed sets in the affine root systems. We provide both a type uniform description, and concrete models in the classical types $\widetilde{A}$, $\widetilde{B}$, $\widetilde{C}$, $\widetilde{D}$. We use our models to prove that biclosed sets form a complete lattice in types $\widetilde{A}$ and $\widetilde{C}$.

The Multiple Choice Polytope (MCP) is the prediction range of a random utility model due to Block and Marschak (1960). Fishburn (1998) offers a nice survey of the findings on random utility models at the time. A complete characterization of the MCP is a remarkable achievement of Falmagne (1978). Apart for a recognition of the facets by Suck (2002), the geometric structure of the MCP was apparently not much investigated. Recently, Chang, Narita and Saito (2022) refer to the adjacency of vertices while Turansick (2022) uses a condition which we show to be equivalent to the non-adjacency of two vertices. We characterize the adjacency of vertices and the adjacency of facets. To derive a more enlightening proof of Falmagne Theorem and of Suck result, Fiorini (2004) assimilates the MCP with the flow polytope of some acyclic network. Our results on adjacencies also hold for the flow polytope of any acyclic network. In particular, they apply not only to the MCP, but also to three polytopes which Davis-Stober, Doignon, Fiorini, Glineur and Regenwetter (2018) introduced as extended formulations of the weak order polytope, interval order polytope and semiorder polytope (the prediction ranges of other models, see for instance Fishburn and Falmagne, 1989, and Marley and Regenwetter, 2017).
The weak order on the hyperoctahedral group and the monomial basis for the Hopf algebra of signed permutations

We give a combinatorial description for the weak order on the hyperoctahedral group. This characterization is then used to analyze the order-theoretic properties of the shifted products of hyperoctahedral groups. It is shown that each shifted product is a disjoint union of some intervals, which can be convex embedded into a hyperoctahedral group. As an application, we investigate the monomial basis for the Hopf algebra $\mathfrak{H}Sym$ of signed permutations, related to the fundamental basis via Möbius inversion on the weak order on hyperoctahedral groups. It turns out that the image of a monomial basis element under the descent map from $\mathfrak{H}Sym$ to the algebra of type $B$ quasi-symmetric functions is either zero or a monomial quasi-symmetric function of type $B$.

We find a simple product formula for the characteristic polynomial of the permutations with a fixed descent set under the weak order. As a corollary we obtain a simple product formula for the characteristic polynomial of alternating permutations. We generalize these results to Coxeter groups. We also find a formula for the generating function for the characteristic polynomials of classical Coxeter groups, which is then related to affine Coxeter groups.

We define a class of partial orders on a Coxeter group associated with sets of reflections. In special cases, these lie between the left weak order and the Bruhat order. We prove that these posets are graded by the length function and that the projections on the right parabolic quotients are always order preserving. We also introduce the notion of $k$-Bruhat graph, $k$-absolute length and $k$-absolute order, proposing some related conjectures and problems.
Stable and metastable contract networks

We consider a hypergraph (I,C), with possible multiple (hyper)edges and loops, in which the vertices $i\in I$ are interpreted as agents, and the edges $c\in C$ as contracts that can be concluded between agents. The preferences of each agent i concerning the contracts where i takes part are given by use of a choice function $f_i$ possessing the so-called path independent property. In this general setup we introduce the notion of stable network of contracts.
The paper contains two main results. The first one is that a general problem on stable systems of contracts for (I,C,f) is reduced to a set of special ones in which preferences of agents are described by use of so-called weak orders, or utility functions. However, for a special case of this sort, the stability may not exist. Trying to overcome this trouble when dealing with such special cases, we introduce a weaker notion of metastability for systems of contracts. Our second result is that a metastable system always exists.

We introduce the shuffle of deformed permutahedra (a.k.a. generalized permutahedra), a simple associative operation obtained as the Cartesian product followed by the Minkowski sum with the graphical zonotope of a complete bipartite graph. Besides preserving the class of graphical zonotopes (the shuffle of two graphical zonotopes is the graphical zonotope of the join of the graphs), this operation is particularly relevant when applied to the classical permutahedra and associahedra. First, the shuffle of an $m$-permutahedron with an $n$-associahedron gives the $(m,n)$-multiplihedron, whose face structure is encoded by $m$-painted $n$-trees, generalizing the classical multiplihedron. We show in particular that the graph of the $(m,n)$-multiplihedron is the Hasse diagram of a lattice generalizing the weak order on permutations and the Tamari lattice on binary trees. Second, the shuffle of an $m$-associahedron with an $n$-associahedron gives the $(m,n)$-constrainahedron, whose face structure is encoded by $(m,n)$-cotrees, and reflects collisions of particles constrained on a grid. Third, the shuffle of an $m$-anti-associahedron with an $n$-associahedron gives the $(m,n)$-biassociahedron, whose face structure is encoded by $(m,n)$-bitrees, with relevant connections to bialgebras up to homotopy. We provide explicit vertex, facet, and Minkowski sum descriptions of these polytopes, as well as summation formulas for their $f$-polynomials based on generating functionology of decorated trees.

In this paper, we establish a one-to-one correspondence between the set of biclosed sets in an irreducible root system of type $A_n$ and the set of quasitrivial semigroup structures on a set with $n+1$ elements. Building on this correspondence, we first generalize this bijection to provide a semigroup structural characterization of the biclosed sets in a standard parabolic subset. In particular, this allows us to derive an enumeration result for the elements in a parabolic weak order of type $A$. Secondly, we define an index for an arbitrary subset of the root system of type $A_n$, which quantifies their deviation from from being biclosed, and prove that such an index coincides with the associativity index of the associated quasitrivial magma. Thirdly, we define type $B_n$ quasitrivial semigroups, and prove that they are in bijective with biclosed sets in a type $B_n$ root system. Finally, by identifying certain biclosed sets with total preorders, we present a purely combinatorial proof that a root system of type $A$ possesses an oriented matroid structure.

We study parabolic aligned elements associated with the type-$B$ Coxeter group and the so-called linear Coxeter element. These elements were introduced algebraically in (Mühle and Williams, 2019) for parabolic quotients of finite Coxeter groups and were characterized by a certain forcing condition on inversions. We focus on the type-$B$ case and give a combinatorial model for these elements in terms of pattern avoidance. Moreover, we describe an equivalence relation on parabolic quotients of the type-$B$ Coxeter group whose equivalence classes are indexed by the aligned elements. We prove that this equivalence relation extends to a congruence relation for the weak order. The resulting quotient lattice is the type-$B$ analogue of the parabolic Tamari lattice introduced for type $A$ in (Mühle and Williams, 2019). These lattices have not appeared in the literature before.

We define and study the canonical complex of a finite semidistributive lattice $L$. It is the simplicial complex on the join or meet irreducible elements of $L$ which encodes each interval of $L$ by recording the canonical join representation of its bottom element and the canonical meet representation of its top element. This complex behaves properly with respect to lattice quotients of $L$, in the sense that the canonical complex of a quotient of $L$ is the subcomplex of the canonical complex of $L$ induced by the join or meet irreducibles of $L$ uncontracted in the quotient. We then describe combinatorially the canonical complex of the weak order on permutations in terms of semi-crossing arc bidiagrams, formed by the superimposition of two non-crossing arc diagrams of N. Reading. We provide explicit direct bijections between the semi-crossing arc bidiagrams and the weak order interval posets of G. Châtel, V. Pilaud and V. Pons. Finally, we provide an algorithm to describe the Kreweras maps in any lattice quotient of the weak order in terms of semi-crossing arc bidiagrams.
