A permutation $π$ of a multiset is said to be a {\em quasi-Stirling} permutation if there does not exist four indices $i<j<k<\ell$ such that $π_i=π_k$ and $π_j=π_{\ell}$. For a multiset $\mathcal{M}$, denote by $\overline{\mathcal{Q}}_{\mathcal{M}}$ the set of quasi-Stirling permutations of $\mathcal{M}$. The {\em qusi-Stirling polynomial} on the multiset $\mathcal{M}$ is defined by $ \overline{Q}_{\mathcal{M}}(t)=\sum_{π\in \overline{\mathcal{Q}}_{\mathcal{M}}}t^{des(π)}$, where $des(π)$ denotes the number of descents of $π$. By employing generating function arguments, Elizalde derived an elegant identity involving quasi-Stirling polynomials on the multiset $\{1^2, 2^2, \ldots, n^2\}$, in analogy to the identity on Stirling polynomials. In this paper, we derive an identity involving quasi-Stirling polynomials $\overline{Q}_{\mathcal{M}}(t)$ for any multiset $\mathcal{M}$, which is a generalization of the identity on Eulerian polynomial and Elizalde's identity on quasi-Stirling polynomials on the multiset $\{1^2, 2^2, \ldots, n^2\}$. We provide a combinatorial proof the identity in terms of certain ordered labeled trees. Specializing $\mathcal{M}=\{1^2, 2^2, \ldots, n^2\}$ implies a combinatorial proof of Elizalde's identity in answer to the problem posed by Elizalde. As an application, our identity enables us to show that the quasi-Stirling polynomial $\overline{Q}_{\mathcal{M}}(t)$ has only real roots and the coefficients of $\overline{Q}_{\mathcal{M}}(t)$ are unimodal and log-concave for any multiset $\mathcal{M}$, in analogy to Brenti's result for Stirling polynomials on multisets.

We prove a number of limiting distributions for statistics for unimodal sequences of positive integers by adapting a probabilistic framework for integer partitions introduced by Fristedt. The difficulty in applying the direct analogue of Fristedt's techniques to unimodal sequences lies in the fact that the generating function for partitions is an infinite product, while that of unimodal sequences is not. Essentially, we get around this by conditioning on the size of the largest part and working uniformly on contributing summands. Our framework may be used to derive many distributions, and our results include joint distributions for largest parts and multiplicities of small parts. We discuss ranks as well. We further obtain analogous results for strongly unimodal sequences.
Do alcoved lattice polytopes have unimodal h*-vector?
We show that h*-vectors of alcoved polytopes P in R^n (of Lie type A) are unimodal if they contain interior lattice points and their facets have lattice distance 1 to the set of interior lattice points. The maximal possible such distance for general alcoved polytopes is shown to be dim(P)-1. A secondary purpose of the paper is to serve as a guide to previous work surrounding unimodality of h*-vectors of alcoved polytopes and related questions.
An explicit order matching for $L(3,n)$ from several approaches and its extension for $L(4,n)$
Let $L(m,n)$ denote Young's lattice consisting of all partitions whose Young diagrams are contained in the $m\times n$ rectangle. It is a well-known result that the poset $L(m,n)$ is rank symmetric, rank unimodal, and Sperner. A direct proof of this result by finding an explicit order matching of $L(m,n)$ is an outstanding open problem. In this paper, we present an explicit order matching $\varphi$ for $L(3,n)$ by several different approaches, and give chain tableau version of $\varphi$ that is very helpful in finding patterns. It is surprise that the greedy algorithm and a recursive knead process also give the same order matching. Our methods extend for $L(4,n)$.
The Integer Decomposition Property and Weighted Projective Space Simplices
Reflexive lattice polytopes play a key role in combinatorics, algebraic geometry, physics, and other areas. One important class of lattice polytopes are lattice simplices defining weighted projective spaces. We investigate the question of when a reflexive weighted projective space simplex has the integer decomposition property. We provide a complete classification of reflexive weighted projective space simplices having the integer decomposition property for the case when there are at most three distinct non-unit weights, and conjecture a general classification for an arbitrary number of distinct non-unit weights. Further, for any weighted projective space simplex and $m\geq 1$, we define the $m$-th reflexive stabilization, a reflexive weighted projective space simplex. We prove that when $m$ is $2$ or greater, reflexive stabilizations do not have the integer decomposition property. We also prove that the Ehrhart $h^\ast$-polynomial of any sufficiently large reflexive stabilization is not unimodal and has only $1$ and $2$ as coefficients. We use this construction to generate interesting examples of reflexive weighted projective space simplices that are near the boundary of both $h^*$-unimodality and the integer decomposition property.

Andrews, Lewis and Lovejoy introduced the partition function $PD(n)$ as the number of partitions of $n$ with designated summands. A bipartition of $n$ is an ordered pair of partitions $(π_1, π_2)$ with the sum of all of the parts being $n$. In this paper, we introduce a generalized crank named the $pd$-crank for bipartitions with designated summands and give some inequalities for the $pd$-crank of bipartitions with designated summands modulo 2 and 3. We also define the $pd$-crank moments weighted by the parity of $pd$-cranks $μ_{2k,bd}(-1,n)$ and show the positivity of $(-1)^nμ_{2k,bd}(-1,n)$. Let $M_{bd}(m,n)$ denote the number of bipartitions of $n$ with designated summands with $pd$-crank $m$. We prove a monotonicity property of $pd$-cranks of bipartitions with designated summands and find that the sequence $\{M_{bd}(m,n)\}_{|m|\leq n}$ is unimodal for $n\not= 1,5,7$.

The object of this paper is to give a systematic treatment of excedance-type polynomials. We first give a sufficient condition for a sequence of polynomials to have alternatingly increasing property, and then we present a systematic study of the joint distribution of excedances, fixed points and cycles of permutations and derangements, signed or not, colored or not. Let $p\in [0,1]$ and $q\in [0,1]$ be two given real numbers. We prove that the cyc q-Eulerian polynomials of permutations are bi-gamma-positive, and the fix and cyc (p,q)-Eulerian polynomials of permutations are alternatingly increasing, and so they are unimodal with modes in the middle, where fix and cyc are the fixed point and cycle statistics. When p=1 and q=1/2, we find a combinatorial interpretation of the bi-gamma-coefficients of the (p,q)-Eulerian polynomials. We then study excedance and flag excedance statistics of signed permutations and colored permutations. In particular, we establish the relationships between the (p,q)-Eulerian polynomials and some multivariate Eulerian polynomials. Our results unify and generalize a variety of recent results.

It is well known that the coefficients of the matching polynomial are unimodal. Unimodality of the coefficients (or their absolute values) of other graph polynomials have been studied as well. One way to prove unimodality is to prove real-rootedness.`
Recently I. Beaton and J. Brown (2020) proved the for almost all graphs the coefficients of the domination polynomial form a unimodal sequence, and C. Barton, J. Brown and D. Pike (2020) proved that the forest polynomial (aka acyclic polynomial) is real-rooted iff $G$ is a forest.
Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a graph property, and let $a_i(G)$ be the number of induced subgraphs of order $i$ of a graph $G$ which are in $\mathcal{A}$. Inspired by their results we prove:
{\bf Theorem:} If $\mathcal{A}$ is the complement of a hereditary property, then for almost all graphs in $G(n,p)$ the sequence $a_i(G)$ is unimodal.
{\bf Theorem:} If $\mathcal{A}$ is a hereditary property which contains a graph which is not a clique or the complement of a clique, then the graph polynomial $P_{\mathcal{A}}(G;x) = \sum_i a_i(G) x^i$ is real-rooted iff $G \in \mathcal{A}$.
On Unimodality of Independence Polynomials of Trees
An independent set in a graph is a set of pairwise non-adjacent vertices. The independence number $α{(G)}$ is the size of a maximum independent set in the graph $G$. The independence polynomial of a graph is the generating function for the sequence of numbers of independent sets of each size. In other words, the $k$-th coefficient of the independence polynomial equals the number of independent sets comprised of $k$ vertices. For instance, the degree of the independence polynomial of the graph $G$ is equal to $α{(G)}$. In 1987, Alavi, Malde, Schwenk, and Erd{ö}s conjectured that the independence polynomial of a tree is unimodal. In what follows, we provide support to this assertion considering trees with up to $20$ vertices. Moreover, we show that the corresponding independence polynomials are log-concave and, consequently, unimodal. The algorithm computing the independence polynomial of a given tree makes use of a database of non-isomorphic unlabeled trees to prevent repeated computations.

A polynomial is said to be unimodal if its coefficients are non-decreasing and then non-increasing. The domination polynomial of a graph $G$ is the generating function of the number of domination sets of each cardinality in $G$, and its coefficients have been conjectured to be unimodal. In this paper we will show the domination polynomial of paths, cycles and complete multipartite graphs are unimodal, and that the domination polynomial of almost every graph is unimodal with mode $ \lceil \frac{n}{2}\rceil $.
Positivity and divisibility of alternating descent polynomials

The alternating descent statistic on permutations was introduced by Chebikin as a variant of the descent statistic. We show that the alternating descent polynomials on permutations are unimodal via a five-term recurrence relation. We also found a quadratic recursion for the alternating major index $q$-analog of the alternating descent polynomials. As an interesting application of this quadratic recursion, we show that $(1+q)^{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}$ divides $\sum_{π\in\mathfrak{S}_n}q^{\rm{altmaj}(π)}$, where $\mathfrak{S}_n$ is the set of all permutations of $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ and $\rm{altmaj}(π)$ is the alternating major index of $π$. This leads us to discover a $q$-analog of $n!=2^{\ell}m$, $m$ odd, using the statistic of alternating major index. Moreover, we study the $γ$-vectors of the alternating descent polynomials by using these two recursions and the ${\textbf{cd}}$-index. Further intriguing conjectures are formulated, which indicate that the alternating descent statistic deserves more work.

The symmetric difference of the $q$-binomial coefficients $F_{n,k}(q)={n+k\brack k}-q^{n}{n+k-2\brack k-2}$ was introduced by Reiner and Stanton. They proved that $F_{n,k}(q)$ is symmetric and unimodal for $k \geq 2$ and $n$ even by using the representation theory for Lie algebras. Based on Sylvester's proof of the unimodality of the Gaussian coefficients, as conjectured by Cayley, we find an interpretation of the unimodality of $F_{n,k}(q)$ in terms of semi-invariants. In the spirit of the strict unimodality of the Gaussian coefficients due to Pak and Panova, we prove the strict unimodality of the symmetric difference $G_{n,k,r}(q)={n+k\brack k}-q^{nr/2}{n+k-r\brack k-r}$, except for the two terms at both ends, where $n,r\geq8$, $k\geq r$ and at least one of $n$ and $r$ is even.

In 2012 Bryson, Ono, Pitman and Rhoades showed how the generating functions for certain strongly unimodal sequences are related to quantum modular and mock modular forms. They proved some parity results and conjectured some mod 4 congruences for the coefficients of these generating functions. In 2016 Kim, Lim and Lovejoy obtained similar results for odd-balanced unimodal sequences and made similar mod 4 conjectures. We prove all of these mod 4 conjectures and similar congruences for the Andrews spt-function and related mock theta functions. Our method of proof involves new Hecke-Rogers type identities for indefinite binary quadratic forms and the Hurwitz class number.

In this paper, we characterize a duality relation between Eulerian recurrences and Eulerian recurrence systems, which generalizes and unifies Hermite-Biehler decompositions of several enumerative polynomials, including flag descent polynomials for hyperoctahedral group, flag ascent-plateau polynomials for Stirling permutations, up-down run polynomials for symmetric group and alternating run polynomials for hyperoctahedral group. As applications, we derive some properties of associated enumerative polynomials. In particular, we find that both the ascent-plateau polynomials and left ascent-plateau polynomials for Stirling permutations are alternatingly increasing, and so they are unimodal with modes in the middle.
An analogue of $k$-marked Durfee symbols for strongly unimodal sequences
In a seminal 2007 paper, Andrews introduced a class of combinatorial objects that generalize partitions called $k$-marked Durfee symbols. Multivariate rank generating functions for these objects have been shown by many to have interesting modularity properties at certain vectors of roots of unity. Motivated by recent studies of rank generating functions for strongly unimodal sequences, we apply methods of Andrews to define an analogous class of combinatorial objects called $k$-marked strongly unimodal symbols that generalize strongly unimodal sequences. We establish a multivariate rank generating function for these objects, which we study combinatorially. We conclude by discussing potential quantum modularity properties for this rank generating function at certain vectors of roots of unity.

Let alpha = (a,b,...) be a composition. Consider the associated poset F(alpha), called a fence, whose covering relations are x_1 < x_2 < ... < x_{a+1} > x_{a+2} > ... > x_{a+b+1} < x_{a+b+2} < ... . We study the associated distributive lattice L(alpha) consisting of all lower order ideals of F(alpha). These lattices are important in the theory of cluster algebras and their rank generating functions can be used to define q-analogues of rational numbers. In particular, we make progress on a recent conjecture of Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko that L(alpha) is rank unimodal. We show that if one of the parts of alpha is greater than the sum of the others, then the conjecture is true. We conjecture that L(alpha) enjoys the stronger properties of having a nested chain decomposition and having a rank sequence which is either top or bottom interlacing, the latter being a recently defined property of sequences. We verify that these properties hold for compositions with at most three parts and for what we call d-divided posets, generalizing work of Claussen and simplifying a construction of Gansner.

Let $Q_n(z)$ be the polynomials associated with the Nekrasov-Okounkov formula $$\sum_{n\geq 1} Q_n(z) q^n := \prod_{m = 1}^\infty (1 - q^m)^{-z - 1}.$$ In this paper we partially answer a conjecture of Heim and Neuhauser, which asks if $Q_n(z)$ is unimodal, or stronger, log-concave for all $n \geq 1$. Through a new recursive formula, we show that if $A_{n,k}$ is the coefficient of $z^k$ in $Q_n(z)$, then $A_{n,k}$ is log-concave in $k$ for $k \ll n^{1/6}/\log n$ and monotonically decreasing for $k \gg \sqrt{n}\log n$. We also propose a conjecture that can potentially close the gap.

Defant, Engen, and Miller defined a refinement of Lassalle's sequence $A_{k+1}$ by considering uniquely sorted permutations of length $2k+1$ whose first element is $\ell$. They showed that each such sequence is symmetric in $\ell$ and conjectured that these sequences are unimodal. We prove that the sequences are unimodal.
Eulerian series, zeta functions and the arithmetic of partitions
In this Ph.D. dissertation (2018, Emory University) we prove theorems at the intersection of the additive and multiplicative branches of number theory, bringing together ideas from partition theory, $q$-series, algebra, modular forms and analytic number theory. We present a natural multiplicative theory of integer partitions (which are usually considered in terms of addition), and explore new classes of partition-theoretic zeta functions and Dirichlet series -- as well as "Eulerian" $q$-hypergeometric series -- enjoying many interesting relations. We find a number of theorems of classical number theory and analysis arise as particular cases of extremely general combinatorial structure laws. Among our applications, we prove explicit formulas for the coefficients of the $q$-bracket of Bloch-Okounkov, a partition-theoretic operator from statistical physics related to quasi-modular forms; we prove partition formulas for arithmetic densities of certain subsets of the integers, giving $q$-series formulas to evaluate the Riemann zeta function; we study $q$-hypergeometric series related to quantum modular forms and the "strange" function of Kontsevich; and we show how Ramanujan's odd-order mock theta functions (and, more generally, the universal mock theta function $g_3$ of Gordon-McIntosh) arise from the reciprocal of the Jacobi triple product via the $q$-bracket operator, connecting also to unimodal sequences in combinatorics and quantum modular-like phenomena.
The bipermutahedron

The harmonic polytope and the bipermutahedron are two related polytopes which arose in Ardila, Denham, and Huh's work on the Lagrangian geometry of matroids. We study the bipermutahedron. We show that its faces are in bijection with the vertex-labeled and edge-labeled multigraphs with no isolated vertices; the generating function for its f-vector is a simple evaluation of the three variable Rogers--Ramanujan function.
We show that the h-polynomial of the bipermutahedral fan is the biEulerian polynomial, which counts bipermutations according to their number of descents. We construct a unimodular triangulation of the product of n triangles that is combinatorially equivalent to (the triple cone over) the nth bipermutahedral fan. Ehrhart theory then gives us a formula for the biEulerian polynomial, which we use to show that this polynomial is real-rooted and that the h-vector of the bipermutahedral fan is log-concave and unimodal.
We describe all the deformations of the bipermutahedron; that is, the ample cone of the bipermutahedral toric variety. We prove that among all polytopes in this family, the bipermutahedron has the largest possible symmetry group. Finally, we show that the Minkowski quotient of the bipermutahedron and the harmonic polytope equals 2.
