Two conjectures on vertex-disjoint rainbow triangles
In 1963, Dirac proved that every $n$-vertex graph has $k$ vertex-disjoint triangles if $n\geq 3k$ and minimum degree $δ(G)\geq \frac{n+k}{2}$. The base case $n=3k$ can be reduced to the Corrádi-Hajnál Theorem. Towards a rainbow version of Dirac's Theorem, Hu, Li, and Yang conjectured that for all positive integers $n$ and $k$ with $n\geq 3k$, every edge-colored graph $G$ of order $n$ with $δ^c(G)\geq \frac{n+k}{2}$ contains $k$ vertex-disjoint rainbow triangles. In another direction, Wu et al. conjectured an exact formula for anti-Ramsey number $ar(n,kC_3)$, generalizing the earlier work of Erdős, Sós and Simonovits. The conjecture of Hu, Li, and Yang was confirmed for the cases $k=1$ and $k=2$. However, Lo and Williams disproved the conjecture when $n\leq \frac{17k}{5}.$ It is therefore natural to ask whether the conjecture holds for $n=Ω(k)$. In this paper, we confirm this by showing that the Hu-Li-Yang conjecture holds when $n\ge 42.5k+48$. We disprove the conjecture of Wu et al. and propose a modified conjecture. This conjecture is motivated by previous works due to Allen, Böttcher, Hladký, and Piguet on Turán number of vertex-disjoint triangles.

A Note on Turán Numbers and the Erdős-Stone-Simonovits Theorem
Given a fixed graph H, we say that a graph G is H-free if G does not contain H as a subgraph. The Turán number ex(n, H) of H is the maximum number of edges in an n-vertex H-free graph. The study of Turán number of graphs is a central topic in extremal graph theory. The purpose of this article is to present some well-known results about this field but also to prove the Erdős-Stone-Simonovits theorem in an original manner.

Planar Turán numbers of three configurations
Published • View Publication • BIB
The planar Tuán number of $H$, denoted by $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, is defined as the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $H$-free planar graph. The exact value of $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ remains a mystery when $H$ is large (for example, $H$ is a long path or a long cycle), while tight bounds have been established for many small planar graphs such as cycles, paths, $Θ$-graphs and other small graphs formed by a union of them. One representative graph among such union graphs is $K_1+L$ where $L$ is a linear forest without isolated vertices. Previous works solved the cases when $L$ is a path or a matching. In this work, we first investigate the planar Turán number of the graph $K_1+L$ when $L$ is the disjoint union of a $P_2$ and $P_3$. Equivalently, $K_1+L$ represents a specific configuration formed by combining a $C_3$ and a $Θ_4$. We further consider the planar Turán numbers of the all graphs obtained by combining $C_3$ and $Θ_4$. Among the six possible such configurations, three have been resolved in earlier works. For the remaining three configurations (including $K_1+(P_2\dot{\cup}P_3)$), we derive tight bounds. Furthermore, we completely characterize all extremal graphs for the remaining two of these three cases.

The generalized Turán number for K_3 in graphs without suspensions of a path on five vertices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given graphs $H$ and $F$, the generalized Turán number $\ex(n, H, F)$ is defined as the maximum number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex graph that contains no copy of $F$. The suspension $\widehat{F}$ of a graph $F$ is obtained by adding a new vertex that is adjacent to every vertex of $F$. Mubayi and Mukherjee (2023, DM) conjectured that $\ex(n, K_3, \widehat{P_k})=\left\lfloor \frac{k-2}{2}\right\rfloor \cdot \frac{n^2}{8}+o(n^2)$, where $P_k$ is a path on $k\ge 4$ vertices. Using the triangle removal lemma, they verified this conjecture for $k=4,5,6$. Later, Mukherjee (2024, DM) established the exact value $\ex(n, K_3, \widehat{P_4})=\left\lfloor n^2/8\right\rfloor$. In this paper, using the stability method, we determine the exact value of $\ex(n, K_3, \widehat{P_5})$ by showing that for sufficiently large $n$, $\ex(n,K_3, \widehat{P_5})=\left\lfloor n^2/8\right\rfloor.$

Turán number of books in non-bipartite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathrm{ex}(n, H)$ be the Turán number of $H$ for a given graph $H$. A graph is color-critical if it contains an edge whose removal reduces its chromatic number. Simonovits' chromatic critical edge theorem states that if $H$ is color-critical with $χ(H)=k+1$, then there exists an $n_0(H)$ such that ex$(n, H)=e(T_{n,k})$ and the Turán graph $T_{n,k}$ is the only extremal graph provided $n\geq n_0(H).$ A book graph $B_{r+1}$ is a set of $r+1$ triangles with a common edge, where $r\geq0$ is an integer. Note that $B_{r+1}$ is a color-critical graph with $χ(B_{r+1})=3$. Simonovits' theorem implies that $T_{n,2}$ is the only extremal graph for $B_{r+1}$-free graphs of sufficiently large order $n$. Furthermore, Edwards and independently Khadžiivanov and Nikiforov completely confirmed Erdős' booksize conjecture and obtained that ex$(n, B_{r+1})=e(T_{n,2})$ for $n\geq n_0(B_{r+1})=6r$. Recently, Zhai and Lin [J. Graph Theory 102 (2023) 502-520] investigated the problem of booksize from a spectral perspective. Note that the extremal graph $T_{n,2}$ is bipartite. Motivated by the above elegant results, we in this paper focus on the Turán problem of non-bipartite $B_{r+1}$-free graphs of order $n$. For $r = 0,$ Erdős proved a nice result: If $G$ is a non-bipartite triangle-free graph on $n$ vertices, then $e(G)\leq\big\lfloor\frac{(n-1)^{2}}{4}\big\rfloor+1$. For general $r\geq1,$ we determine the exact value of Turán number of $B_{r+1}$ in non-bipartite graphs and characterize all extremal graphs provided $n$ is sufficiently large. An interesting phenomenon is that the Turán numbers and extremal graphs are completely different for $r=0$ and general $r\geq1.$
Turán problems for simplicial complexes
An abstract simplicial complex $\mathbf{F}$ is a non-uniform hypergraph without isolated vertices, whose edge set is closed under taking subsets. The extremal number $\mathrm{ex}(n,\mathbf{F})$ is the maximum number of edges in an $\mathbf{F}$-free simplicial complex on $n$ vertices. This extremal number is naturally related to the generalised Turán numbers of certain underlying hypergraphs. Making progress in a problem raised by Conlon, Piga, and Schülke, we find large classes of simplicial complexes whose extremal numbers are determined by the respective generalised hypergraph Turán numbers. We also provide simplicial complexes for which such a relation does not hold.

On the Turán number of odd-ballooning of $3$-chromatic graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a graph $F$, the Turán number ${\rm ex}(n,F)$ is the maximum number of edges in any $n$-vertex $F$-free graph. The odd-ballooning of $F$, denoted by $F^{o}$, is a graph obtained by replacing each edge of $F$ with an odd cycle, where all new vertices of the odd cycles are distinct. The Turán number of the odd-ballooning of $F$ has been established for several important cases. For a star, it was determined by Erdős, Füredi, Gould, and Gunderson (1995), Hou, Qiu, and Liu (2018), and Yuan (2018); for trees under certain conditions, by Zhu and Chen (2023); and for complete bipartite graphs $K_{s,t}$ ($t\geq s \geq 2$) where each substituted odd cycle has length at least five, by Peng and Xia (2024). In this paper, we apply Simonovits' celebrated method of progressive induction to determine the Turán number for the odd-ballooning of a class of $3$-chromatic graphs. Specifically, let $F$ be a graph formed by connecting a single vertex to all vertices of another graph whose components are either non-trivial trees or even cycles. We determine ${\rm ex}(n,F^{o})$ when each substituted odd cycle in $F^{o}$ has length at least five. As corollaries, we obtain the Turán number for the odd-ballooning of several well-known graph classes, including odd wheels, fan graphs, book graphs, and friendship graphs, where each substituted odd cycle in the ballooning has length at least five.

Non-bipartite graphs without theta subgraphs

Fix a color-critical graph $H$ with $χ(H)=r+1\geq 3$. Simonovits' chromatic critical edge theorem and Nikiforov's spectral chromatic critical edge theorem imply that $T_{n,r}$ is the extremal graph with the maximum size and the maximum spectral radius over all $H$-free graphs of order $n$, respectively. Since $T_{n,r}$ is $r$-partite, it is interesting to study the Turán number and the spectral Turán number of a color-critical graph $H$ in non-$r$-partite graphs. Denote by ${\rm EX}_{r+1}(n,H)$ (resp. ${\rm SPEX}_{r+1}(n,H)$) the family of $n$-vertex $H$-free non-$r$-partite graphs with the maximum size (resp. spectral radius). Brouwer showed that any graph in $\mathrm{EX}_{r+1}(n,K_{r+1})$ is of size $e(T_{n,r})-\lfloor\frac{n}{r}\rfloor+1$ for $n\geq 2r+1$. Lin, Ning and Wu [Combin. Probab. Comput. 30 (2) (2021) 258--270], and Li and Peng [SIAM J. Discrete Math. 37 (2023) 2462--2485] characterized the unique graph in $\mathrm{SPEX}_{r+1}(n,K_{r+1})$ for $r\geq 2$. Particularly, the unique graph is of size $e(T_{n,r})-\lfloor\frac{n}{r}\rfloor+1$. Thus $\mathrm{SPEX}_{r+1}(n,K_{r+1})\subseteq \mathrm{EX}_{r+1}(n,K_{r+1})$. It is natural to conjecture that ${\rm SPEX}_{r+1}(n,H)\subseteq {\rm EX}_{r+1}(n,H)$ for arbitrary color-critical graph $H$ with $χ(H)=r+1\geq 3$. Fix $q,r\geq 2$ with even $q$, a theta graph $θ(1,q,r)$ is obtained from internally disjoint paths of lengths $1,q,r$, respectively by sharing a common pair of endpoints. In this paper, we prove that $\mathrm{SPEX}_{3}(n,θ(1,q,r))\subseteq \mathrm{EX}_{3}(n,θ(1,q,r))$ for sufficiently large $n$. Furthermore, we determine all the graphs in $\mathrm{SPEX}_{3}(n,θ(1,q,r))$ and $\mathrm{EX}_{3}(n,θ(1,q,r))$, respectively.

The exact Turán number of generalized book graph $B_{r,k}$ in non-$r$-partite graphs
Given a graph $H,$ we say that a graph is \textit{$H$-free} if it does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. The Turán number $\ex(n,H)$ of $H$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $H$-free graph, the set of all the corresponding extremal graphs is denoted by $\Ex(n, H)$. The study of Turán number of graphs is a central topic in extremal graph theory. A graph is \textit{color-critical} if it contains an edge whose deletion reduces its chromatic number. Simonovits showed that if $H$ is a color-critical graph of chromatic number $r+1,$ then for sufficiently large $n,$ $\Ex(n, H)=\{T_r(n)\},$ the $r$-partite Turán graph of order $n.$ Given a color-critical graph $H$ with chromatic number $r+1,$ it is interesting to determine $H$-free non-$r$-partite graphs with maximum number of edges. For a graph $H$ with chromatic number $r+1,$ denote $\ex_{r+1}(n,H)$ the maximum number of edges in non-$r$-partite $H$-free graphs of order $n,$ the set of all non-$r$-partite $H$-free graphs of order $n$ and size $\ex_{r+1}(n,H)$ is denoted by $\Ex_{r+1}(n, H)$. For $r\geq 3,\,k\geq1,$ the generalized book graph \({B}_{r,k}\) is a graph obtained by joining every vertex of $K_r$ to every vertex of an independent set of size \(k\). Note that \({B}_{r,k}\) is a color-critical graph of chromatic number $r+1.$ In this paper, based on the stability theory and local structure characterization, the exact value of $\ex_{r+1}(n,B_{r,k})$ is determined and all the corresponding extremal graphs are identified, where $r\geq 3,\,k\geq1$ and $n$ is sufficiently large.

Generalized Turán results for disjoint copies of degenerate graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The generalized Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n, H, F)$ denotes the maximum number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex $F$-free graph. For an integer $t \geq 1$, let $tF$ be the vertex-disjoint union of $t$ copies of $F$. Gerbner, Methuku, and Vizer (2019) established an asymptotically sharp bound for $\mathrm{ex}(n,K_r,(t+1)K_{2,b})$. We extend their results in two directions by considering forbidden graphs $(t+1)K_{a,b}$ and $(t+1)C_{2k}$ and establish more precise matching upper and lower bounds of the same order of magnitude.

Generalized Turan number with given size
Generalized Turán problem with given size, denoted as $\mathrm{mex}(m,K_r,F)$, determines the maximum number of $K_r$-copies in an $F$-free graph with $m$ edges. We prove that for $r\ge 3$ and $α\in(\frac 2 r,1]$, any graph $G$ with $m$ edges and $Ω(m^{\frac{αr}{2}})$ $K_r$-copies has a subgraph of order $n_0=Ω(m^\fracα{2})$, which contains $Ω(n_0^{\frac{i(r-2)α}{(2-α)r-2}})$ $K_i$-copies for each $i = 2, \ldots, r$. This implies an upper bound of $\mathrm{mex}(m, K_r, F)$ when an upper bound of $\mathrm{ex}(n,K_r,F)$ is known. Furthermore, we establish an improved upper bound of $\mathrm{mex}(m, K_r, F)$ by $\mathrm{ex}(n, F)$ and $\min_{v_0 \in V(F)} \mathrm{ex}(n, K_r, F - v_0)$. As a corollary, we show $\mathrm{mex}(m, K_r, K_{s,t}) = Θ( m^{\frac{rs - \binom{r}{2}}{2s-1}} )$ for $r \geq 3$, $s \geq 2r-2$ and $t \geq (s-1)! + 1$, and obtain non-trivial bounds for other graph classes such as complete $r$-partite graphs and $K_s \vee C_\ell$, etc.

Spectral radius of simplicial complexes without holes
The Turán problem for hypergraphs and its spectral version is a central and challenging topic in extremal combinatorics. In this paper, we view hypergraphs from the perspective of simplicial complexes, and investigate the spectral version of Turán problem for simplicial complexes. We characterize the simplicial complex that maximizes the signless Laplacian spectral radius among all hole-free simplicial complexes, and establish an upper bound on the spectral radius for simplicial complexes with a prescribed Betti number. As an application, we derive bounds on Turán numbers for both hypergraphs and simplicial complexes via the connection between the spectral radius and the face numbers.

Planar Turán number of disjoint union of $C_3$ and $C_5$
The planar Turán number of $H$, denoted by $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $H$-free planar graph. The planar Turán number of $k\geq 3$ vertex-disjoint union of cycles is the trivial value $3n-6$. Let $C_{\ell}$ denote the cycle of length $\ell$ and $C_{\ell}\cup C_t$ denote the union of disjoint cycles $C_{\ell}$ and $C_t$. The planar Turán number $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ is known if $H=C_{\ell}\cup C_k$, where $\ell,k\in \{3,4\}$. In this paper, we determine the value $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,C_3\cup C_5)=\lfloor\frac{8n-13}{3}\rfloor$ and characterize the extremal graphs when $n$ is sufficiently large.

Planar Turán number of quasi-double stars
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a graph H, we call a graph $\textit{H-free}$ if it does not contain H as a subgraph. The planar Turán number of a graph H, denoted by $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n, H)$, is the maximum number of edges in a planar H-free graph on n vertices. A (h,k)-quasi-double star $W_{h,k}$, obtained from a path $P_3=v_1v_2v_3$ by adding h leaves and k leaves to the vertices $v_1$ and $v_3$, respectively, is a subclass of caterpillars. In this paper, we study $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,W_{h,k})$ for all $1\le h\le 2\le k\le 5$, and obtain some tight bounds $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,W_{h,k})\leq\frac{3(h+k)}{h+k+2}n$ for $3\le h+k\le 5$ with equality holds if $(h+k+2)\mid n$, and $ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,W_{1,5})\le \frac{5}{2}n$ with equality holds if $12\mid n$. Also we show that $\frac{9}{4}n\le ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,W_{2,4})\le \frac{5}{2}n$ and $\frac{5}{2}n\le ex_{\mathcal{P}}(n,W_{2,5})\le \frac{17}{6}n$, respectively.

Turán type problems for a fixed graph and a linear forest
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathscr{F}$ be a family of graphs. A graph $G$ is $\mathscr{F}$-free if $G$ does not contain any $F\in \mathscr{F}$ as a subgraph. The Turán number, denoted by $ex(n, \mathscr{F})$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $\mathscr{F}$-free graph. Let $F $ be a fixed graph with $ χ(F) \geq 3 $. A forest $H$ is called a linear forest if all components of $H$ are paths. In this paper, we determined the exact value of $ex(n, \{H, F\}) $ for a fixed graph $F$ with $χ(F)\geq 3$ and a linear forest $H$ with at least $2$ components and each component with size at least $3$.

Exact Turán densities in triple systems
In this paper, we prove several new Turán density results for $3$-graphs. We show: $π(C_4^3, \mathrm{complement\ of\ } F_5) = 2\sqrt{3} - 3$, $π(F_{3,2}, C_5^{3-}) = \frac{2}{9}$, and $π(F_{3,2}, \mathrm{induced\ complement\ of\ } F_{3,2}) = \frac{3}{8}$. The first result confirms the conjecture of Shi~[On Turán denisties of small triple graphs, European J. Combin. 52 (2016) 95-102]. The other results give several special non-principal family posed by Mubayi and Rödl~[On the Turán number of triple systems, J. Combin. Theory A. 100 (2002) 135-152].

The quantum Ramsey numbers $QR(2,k)$
Published • View Publication • BIB
Operator systems of matrices can be viewed as quantum analogues of finite graphs. This analogy suggests many natural combinatorial questions in linear algebra. We determine the quantum Ramsey numbers $QR(2,k)$ and the lower quantum Turán numbers $T^\downarrow(n, m)$ with $m \geq n/4$. In particular, we conclude that $QR(2,2) = 4$ and confirm Weaver's conjecture that $T^\downarrow(4, 1) = 4$. We also obtain a new result for the existence of anticliques in quantum graphs of low dimension.

Spectral extremal problem for the odd prism
Published • View Publication • BIB
The spectral Turán number $\spex(n, F)$ denotes the maximum spectral radius $ρ(G)$ of an $F$-free graph $G$ of order $n$. This paper determines $\spex\left(n, C_{2k+1}^{\square}\right)$ for all sufficiently large $n$, establishing the unique extremal graph. Here, $C_{2k+1}^{\square}$ is the odd prism -- the Cartesian product $C_{2k+1} \square K_2$ -- where the Cartesian product $G \square F$ has vertex set $V(G) \times V(F)$, and edges between $(u_1,v_1)$ and $(u_2,v_2)$ if either $u_1 = u_2$ and $v_1v_2 \in E(F)$, or ($v_1 = v_2$ and $u_1u_2 \in E(G)$).

Rational Exponents for General Graphs
A rational number $r$ is a \textbf{realizable exponent} for a graph $H$ if there exists a finite family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$ such that $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,\mathcal{F})=Θ(n^r)$, where $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,\mathcal{F})$ denotes the maximum number of copies of $H$ that an $n$-vertex $\mathcal{F}$-free graph can have. Results for realizable exponents are currently known only when $H$ is either a star or a clique, with the full resolution of the $H=K_2$ case being a major breakthrough of Bukh and Conlon. In this paper, we establish the first set of results for realizable exponents which hold for arbitrary graphs $H$ by showing that for any graph $H$ with maximum degree $Δ\ge 1$, every rational in the interval $\left[v(H)-\frac{e(H)}{2Δ^2},\ v(H)\right]$ is realizable for $H$. We also prove a ``stability'' result for generalized Turán numbers of trees which implies that if $T\ne K_2$ is a tree with $\ell$ leaves, then $T$ has no realizable exponents in $[0,\ell]\setminus \mathbb{Z}$. Our proof of this latter result uses a new variant of the classical Helly theorem for trees, which may be of independent interest.

On Turán problems for Berge forests
For a graph $F$, an $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$ is a Berge-$F$ if there is a bijection $φ:E(F)\rightarrow E(H)$ such that $e\subseteq φ(e)$ for each $e\in E(F)$. Given a family $\mathcal{F}$ of $r$-uniform hypergraphs, an $r$-uniform hypergraph is $\mathcal{F}$-free if it does not contain any member in $\mathcal{F}$ as a subhypergraph. The Turán number of $\mathcal{F}$ is the maximum number of hyperedges in an $\mathcal{F}$-free $r$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices. In this paper, some exact and general results on the Turán numbers for several types of Berge forests are obtained.
