Random Polynomial Graphs for Random Turán Problems
Published • View Publication • BIB
Bukh and Conlon used random polynomial graphs to give effective lower bounds on $\mathrm{ex}(n,\mathcal{T}^\ell)$, where $\mathcal{T}^\ell$ is the $\ell$th power of a balanced rooted tree $T$. We extend their result to give effective lower bounds on $\mathrm{ex}(G_{n,p},\mathcal{T}^\ell)$, which is the maximum number of edges in a $\mathcal{T}^\ell$-free subgraph of the random graph $G_{n,p}$. Analogous bounds for generalized Turán numbers in random graphs are also proven.

Some results on the Turán number of $k_1P_{\ell}\cup k_2S_{\ell-1}$
The Turán number of a graph $H$, denoted by $ex(n, H)$, is the maximum number of edges in any graph on $n$ vertices containing no $H$ as a subgraph. Let $P_{\ell}$ denote the path on $\ell$ vertices, $S_{\ell-1}$ denote the star on $\ell$ vertices and $k_1P_{\ell}\cup k_2S_{\ell-1}$ denote the path-star forest with disjoint union of $k_1$ copies of $P_{\ell}$ and $k_2$ copies of $S_{\ell-1}$. In 2013, Lidický et al. first considered the Turán number of $k_1P_4\cup k_2S_3$ for sufficiently large $n$. In 2022, Zhang and Wang raised a conjecture about the Turán number of $k_1P_{2\ell}\cup k_2S_{2\ell-1}$. In this paper, we determine the Turán numbers of $P_{\ell}\cup kS_{\ell-1}$, $k_1P_{2\ell}\cup k_2S_{2\ell-1}$, $2P_5\cup kS_4$ for $n$ appropriately large, which implies the conjecture of Zhang and Wang. The corresponding extremal graphs are also completely characterized.

Stability of generalized Turán number for linear forests
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a graph $T$ and a family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$, the generalized Turán number of $\mathcal{F}$ is the maximum number of copies of $T$ in an $\mathcal{F}$-free graph on $n$ vertices, denoted by $ex(n,T,\mathcal{F})$. When $T = K_r$, $ex(n, K_r, \mathcal{F})$ is a function specifying the maximum possible number of $r$-cliques in an $\mathcal{F}$-free graph on $n$ vertices. A linear forest is a forest whose connected components are all paths and isolated vertices. Let $\mathcal{L}_{k}$ be the family of all linear forests of size $k$ without isolated vertices. In this paper, we obtained the maximum possible number of $r$-cliques in $G$, where $G$ is $\mathcal{L}_{k}$-free with minimum degree at least $d$. Furthermore, we give a stability version of the result. As an application of the stability version of the result, we obtain a clique version of the stability of the Erdős-Gallai Theorem on matchings.

Extremal graphs for the suspension of edge-critical graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Turán number of a graph $H$, $\text{ex}(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph that does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. For a vertex $v$ and a multi-set $\mathcal{F}$ of graphs, the suspension $\mathcal{F}+v$ of $\mathcal{F}$ is the graph obtained by connecting the vertex $v$ to all vertices of $F$ for each $F\in \mathcal{F}$. For two integers $k\ge1$ and $r\ge2$, let $H_i$ be a graph containing a critical edge with chromatic number $r$ for any $i\in\{1,\ldots,k\}$, and let $H=\{H_1,\ldots,H_k\}+v$. In this paper, we determine $\text{ex}(n, H)$ and characterize all the extremal graphs for sufficiently large $n$. This generalizes a result of Chen, Gould, Pfender and Wei on intersecting cliques. We also obtain a stability theorem for $H$, extending a result of Roberts and Scott on graphs containing a critical edge.

On the Turán number of the hypercube
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 1964, Erdős proposed the problem of estimating the Turán number of the $d$-dimensional hypercube $Q_d$. Since $Q_d$ is a bipartite graph with maximum degree $d$, it follows from results of Füredi and Alon, Krivelevich, Sudakov that $\mathrm{ex}(n,Q_d)=O_d(n^{2-1/d})$. A recent general result of Sudakov and Tomon implies the slightly stronger bound $\mathrm{ex}(n,Q_d)=o(n^{2-1/d})$. We obtain the first power-improvement for this old problem by showing that $\mathrm{ex}(n,Q_d)=O_d(n^{2-\frac{1}{d-1}+\frac{1}{(d-1)2^{d-1}}})$. This answers a question of Liu. Moreover, our techniques give a power improvement for a larger class of graphs than cubes. We use a similar method to prove that any $n$-vertex, properly edge-coloured graph without a rainbow cycle has at most $O(n(\log n)^2)$ edges, improving the previous best bound of $n(\log n)^{2+o(1)}$ by Tomon. Furthermore, we show that any properly edge-coloured $n$-vertex graph with $ω(n\log n)$ edges contains a cycle which is almost rainbow: that is, almost all edges in it have a unique colour. This latter result is tight.
Generalized Turan number for the edge blow-up graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $H$ be a graph and $p$ be an integer. The edge blow-up $H^p$ of $H$ is the graph obtained from replacing each edge in $H$ by a copy of $K_p$ where the new vertices of the cliques are all distinct. Let $C_k$ and $P_k$ denote the cycle and path of length $k$, respectively. In this paper, we find sharp upper bounds for $ex(n,K_3,C_3^3)$ and the exact value for $ ex(n,K_3,P_3^3)$ and determine the graphs attaining these bounds.
Edges not covered by monochromatic bipartite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $f_k(n,H)$ denote the maximum number of edges not contained in any monochromatic copy of~$H$ in a $k$-coloring of the edges of $K_n$, and let $ex(n,H)$ denote the Turán number of $H$. In place of $f_2(n,H)$ we simply write $f(n,H)$. Keevash and Sudakov proved that $f(n,H)=ex(n,H)$ if $H$ is an edge-critical graph or $C_4$ and asked if this equality holds for any graph $H$. All known exact values of this question require $H$ to contain at least one cycle. In this paper we focus on acyclic graphs and have the following results: (1) We prove $f(n,H)=ex(n,H)$ when $H$ is a spider or a double broom. (2) A \emph{tail} in $H$ is a path $P_3=v_0v_1v_2$ such that $v_2$ is only adjacent to $v_1$ and $v_1$ is only adjacent to $v_0,v_2$ in $H$. We obtain a tight upper bound for $f(n,H)$ when $H$ is a bipartite graph with a tail. This result provides the first bipartite graphs which answer the question of Keevash and Sudakov in the negative. (3) Liu, Pikhurko and Sharifzadeh asked if $f_k(n,T)=(k-1)ex(n,T)$ when $T$ is a tree. We provide an upper bound for $f_{2k}(n,P_{2k})$ and show it is tight when $2k-1$ is prime. This provides a negative answer to their question.

The Turán Number of Surfaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that there is a constant $c$ such that any 3-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal H$ with $n$ vertices and at least $cn^{5/2}$ edges contains a triangulation of the real projective plane as a subgraph. This resolves a conjecture of Kupavskii, Polyanskii, Tomon, and Zakharov. Furthermore, our work, combined with prior results, asymptotically determines the Turán number of all surfaces.

The Turán number of $k_1P_{2l}\cup k_2S_{2l-1}$
The Turán number of a graph $H$, denoted by $ex(n, H)$, is the maximum number of edges in any graph on $n$ vertices containing no $H$ as a subgraph. Let $P_k$ denote the path on $k$ vertices, $S_k$ denote the star on $k+1$ vertices and $k_1P_{2l}\cup k_2S_{2l-1}$ denote the path-star forest with disjoint union of $k_1$ copies of $P_{2l}s$ and $k_2$ copies of $S_{2l-1}s$. In 2019, Lan et al. determined the Turán numbers of $kS_l$ and $k_1P_4\cup k_2S_3$. In 2022, Zhang et al. determined the Turán numbers of $k_1P_6\cup k_2S_5$ and raised a conjecture of the Turán numbers of $k_1P_{2l}\cup k_2S_{2l-1}$, where $k_1\geqslant 1$ and $l\geqslant 2$. In this paper, we study the hypothesis and determine the Turán numbers of $k_1P_{2l}\cup k_2S_{2l-1}$ when $n$ is sufficiently large.
On graphs that contain exactly k copies of a subgraph, and a related problem in search theory
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study $\mathrm{exa}_k(n,F)$, the largest number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph $G$ that contains exactly $k$ copies of a given subgraph $F$. The case $k=0$ is the Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n,F)$ that is among the most studied parameters in extremal graph theory. We show that for any $F$ and $k$, $\mathrm{exa}_k(n,F)=(1+o(1))\mathrm{ex}(n,F))$ and determine the exact values of $\mathrm{exa}_k(n,K_3)$ and $\mathrm{exa}_1(n,K_r)$ for $n$ large enough. We also explore a connection to the following well-known problem in search theory. We are given a graph of order $n$ that consists of an unknown copy of $F$ and some isolated vertices. We can ask pairs of vertices as queries, and the answer tells us whether there is an edge between those vertices. Our goal is to describe the graph using as few queries as possible. Aigner and Triesch in 1990 showed that the number of queries needed is at least $\binom{n}{2}-\mathrm{exa}_1(n,F)$. Among other results we show that the number of queries that were answered NO is at least $\binom{n}{2}-\mathrm{exa}_1(n,F)$.

The rainbow Turán number of $P_5$
An edge-colored graph $F$ is rainbow if each edge of $F$ has a unique color. The rainbow Turán number $ex^*(n,F)$ of a graph $F$ is the maximum possible number of edges in a properly edge-colored $n$-vertex graph with no rainbow copy of $F$. The study of rainbow Turán numbers was introduced by Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov, and Verstraëte in 2007. In this paper we focus on $ex^*(n,P_5)$. While several recent papers have investigated rainbow Turán numbers for $\ell$-edge paths $P_{\ell}$, exact results have only been obtained for $\ell < 5$, and $P_5$ represents one of the smallest cases left open in rainbow Turán theory. In this paper, we prove that $ex^*(n,P_5) \leq \frac{5n}{2}$. Combined with a lower-bound construction due to Johnston and Rombach, this result shows that $ex^*(n,P_5) = \frac{5n}{2} $ when $n$ is divisible by $16$, thereby settling the question asymptotically for all $n$. In addition, this result strengthens the conjecture that $ex^*(n,P_{\ell}) = \frac{\ell}{2}n + O(1)$ for all $\ell \geq 3$.

On the extremal graphs in generalized Turán problems
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given two graphs $H$ and $F$, the generalized Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,F)$ is the largest number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex $F$-free graph. For every $F$ and sufficiently large $n$, we present an extremal graph for a generalized Turán problem, i.e., an $F$-free $n$ vertex graph $G$ that for some $H$ contains exactly $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,F)$ copies of $H$.

On the Turán number of $K_m \vee C_{2k-1}$
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a graph $H$ and a positive integer $n$, the Turán number of $H$ for the order $n$, denoted $ex(n,H)$, is the maximum size of a simple graph of order $n$ not containing $H$ as a subgraph. Given graphs $G$ and $H$, the notation $G \vee H$ means the joint of $G$ and $H$. $χ(G)$ denotes the chromatic number of a graph $G$. Since $χ(K_m \vee C_{2k-1})=m+3$ and there is an edge $e\in E(K_m \vee C_{2k-1})$ such that $χ(K_m \vee C_{2k-1}-e)= m+2$, by the Simonovits theorem, $ex(n, K_m \vee C_{2k-1}) = \lfloor \frac{(m+1)n^2}{2(m+2)}\rfloor$ for sufficiently large $n$. In this paper, we prove that $2(m+2)k-3(m+2)-1$ is large enough for $n$.

Some exact results for non-degenerate generalized Turán problems
Published • View Publication • BIB
The generalized Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,F)$ is the maximum number of copies of $H$ in $n$-vertex $F$-free graphs. We consider the case where $χ(H)<χ(F)$. There are several exact results on $\mathrm{ex}(n,H,F)$ when the extremal graph is a complete $(χ(F)-1)$-partite graph. We obtain multiple exact results with other kinds of extremal graphs.

An improved lower bound for the planar Turán number of cycles
The planar Turán number of a graph $H$, denoted by $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$, is the largest number of edges in a planar graph on $n $ vertices without containing $H$ as a subgraph. In this paper, we continue to study the topic of "extremal" planar graphs initiated by Dowden [J. Graph Theory 83 (2016) 213--230]. We first obtain an improved lower bound for $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,C_k)$ for all $k\ge 13$ and $n\ge 5(k-6+\lfloor{(k-1)}/2\rfloor)(k-1)/2$; the construction for each $k$ and $n$ provides a simpler counterexample to a conjecture of Ghosh, Győri, Martin, Paulos and Xiao [arxiv:2004.14094v1], which has recently been disproved by Cranston, Lidický, Liu and Shantanam [Electron. J. Combin. 29(3) (2022) \#P3.31] for every $k\ge 11$ and $n$ sufficiently large (as a function of $k$). We then prove that $ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H^+)=ex_{_\mathcal{P}}(n,H)$ for all $k\ge 5$ and $n\ge |H|+1$, where $H\in\{C_k, 2C_k\}$ and $H^+$ is obtained from $H$ by adding a pendant edge to a vertex of degree two.

Extremal planar graphs with no cycles of particular lengths
In this paper we estimate the planar Turán number $\mathrm{ex}_\mathcal{P}(n,H)$ of some graphs $H$, i.e., the maximum number of edges in a planar graph $G$ of $n$ vertices not containing $H$ as a subgraph. We give a new, short proof when $H=C_5$, and study the cases when $G$ is bipartite or triangle-free and $H$ is a short even cycle. The proofs are mostly new applications or variants of the "contribution method" introduced by Ghosh, Győri, Martin, Paulos and Xiao in arXiv:2004.14094.

Balanced supersaturation and Turan numbers in random graphs
Published in Advances in Combinatorics, 2024:3, 26pp • View Publication • BIB
In a ground-breaking paper solving a conjecture of Erdős on the number of $n$-vertex graphs not containing a given even cycle, Morris and Saxton \cite{MS} made a broad conjecture on so-called balanced supersaturation property of a bipartite graph $H$. Ferber, McKinley, and Samotij \cite{FMS} established a weaker version of this conjecture and applied it to derive far-reaching results on the enumeration problem of $H$-free graphs. In this paper, we show that Morris and Saxton's conjecture holds under a very mild assumption about $H$, which is widely believed to hold whenever $H$ contains a cycle. We then use our theorem to obtain enumeration results and general upper bounds on the Turán number of a bipartite $H$ in the random graph $G(n,p)$, the latter being first of its kind.

Connected Turán number of trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
As a variant of the much studied Turán number, $ex(n,F)$, the largest number of edges that an $n$-vertex $F$-free graph may contain, we introduce the connected Turán number $ex_c(n,F)$, the largest number of edges that an $n$-vertex connected $F$-free graph may contain. We focus on the case where the forbidden graph is a tree. The celebrated conjecture of Erdős and Sós states that for any tree $T$, we have $ex(n,T)\le(|T|-2)\frac{n}{2}$. We address the problem how much smaller $ex_c(n,T)$ can be, what is the smallest possible ratio of $ex_c(n,T)$ and $(|T|-2)\frac{n}{2}$ as $|T|$ grows. We also determine the exact value of $ex_c(n,T)$ for small trees, in particular for all trees with at most six vertices. We introduce general constructions of connected $T$-free graphs based on graph parameters as longest path, matching number, branching number, etc.
Non-degenerate Hypergraphs with Exponentially Many Extremal Constructions
Published • View Publication • BIB
For every integer $t \ge 0$, denote by $F_5^t$ the hypergraph on vertex set $\{1,2,\ldots, 5+t\}$ with hyperedges $\{123,124\} \cup \{34k : 5 \le k \le 5+t\}$. We determine $\mathrm{ex}(n,F_5^t)$ for every $t\ge 0$ and sufficiently large $n$ and characterize the extremal $F_5^t$-free hypergraphs. In particular, if $n$ satisfies certain divisibility conditions, then the extremal $F_5^t$-free hypergraphs are exactly the balanced complete tripartite hypergraphs with additional hyperedges inside each of the three parts $(V_1,V_2,V_3)$ in the partition; each part $V_i$ spans a $(|V_i|,3,2,t)$-design. This generalizes earlier work of Frankl and Füredi on the Turán number of $F_5:=F_5^0$. Our results extend a theory of Erdős and Simonovits about the extremal constructions for certain fixed graphs. In particular, the hypergraphs $F_5^{6t}$, for $t\geq 1$, are the first examples of hypergraphs with exponentially many extremal constructions and positive Turán density.

Multicolor Turán numbers II -- a generalization of the Ruzsa-Szemerédi theorem and new results on cliques and odd cycles
In this paper we continue the study of a natural generalization of Turán's forbidden subgraph problem and the Ruzsa-Szemerédi problem. Let $ex_F(n,G)$ denote the maximum number of edge-disjoint copies of a fixed simple graph $F$ that can be placed on an $n$-vertex ground set without forming a subgraph $G$ whose edges are from different $F$-copies. The case when both $F$ and $G$ are triangles essentially gives back the theorem of Ruzsa and Szemerédi. We extend their results to the case when $F$ and $G$ are arbitrary cliques by applying a number theoretic result due to Erdős, Frankl and Rödl. This extension in turn decides the order of magnitude for a large family of graph pairs, which will be subquadratic, but almost quadratic. Since the linear $r$-uniform hypergraph Turán problems to determine $ex_r^{lin}(n,G)$ form a class of the multicolor Turán problem, following the identity $ex_r^{lin}(n,G)=ex_{K_r}(n,G)$, our results determine the linear hypergraph Turán numbers of every graph of girth $3$ and for every $r$ up to a subpolynomial factor. Furthermore, when $G$ is a triangle, we settle the case $F=C_5$ and give bounds for the cases $F=C_{2k+1}$, $k\ge 3$ as well.
