Decomposition Methods for Nonlinear Optimization and Data Mining
We focus on two central themes in this dissertation. The first one is on decomposing polytopes and polynomials in ways that allow us to perform nonlinear optimization. We start off by explaining important results on decomposing a polytope into special polyhedra. We use these decompositions and develop methods for computing a special class of integrals exactly. Namely, we are interested in computing the exact value of integrals of polynomial functions over convex polyhedra. We present prior work and new extensions of the integration algorithms. Every integration method we present requires that the polynomial has a special form. We explore two special polynomial decomposition algorithms that are useful for integrating polynomial functions. Both polynomial decompositions have strengths and weaknesses, and we experiment with how to practically use them.
After developing practical algorithms and efficient software tools for integrating a polynomial over a polytope, we focus on the problem of maximizing a polynomial function over the continuous domain of a polytope. This maximization problem is NP-hard, but we develop approximation methods that run in polynomial time when the dimension is fixed. Moreover, our algorithm for approximating the maximum of a polynomial over a polytope is related to integrating the polynomial over the polytope. We show how the integration methods can be used for optimization.
The second central topic in this dissertation is on problems in data science. We first consider a heuristic for mixed-integer linear optimization. We show how many practical mixed-integer linear have a special substructure containing set partition constraints. We then describe a nice data structure for finding feasible zero-one integer solutions to systems of set partition constraints. Finally, we end with an applied project using data science methods in medical research.

The Delta Conjecture of Haglund, Remmel, and Wilson is a recent generalization of the Shuffle Conjecture in the field of diagonal harmonics. In this paper we give evidence for the Delta Conjecture by proving a pair of conjectures of Wilson and Haglund-Remmel-Wilson which give equidistribution results for statistics related to inversion count and major index on objects related to ordered set partitions. Our results generalize the famous result of MacMahon that major index and inversion number share the same distribution on permutations.

In this paper, we study the lattice properties of posets of torsion pairs in the module category of a family of representation-finite gentle algebras called tiling algebras, introduced by Coelho Simoes and Parsons. We present a combinatorial model for torsion pairs using polyogonal subdivisions of a convex polygon. We use this model and the lattice theory to classify 2-term simple-minded collections in the bounded derived category of the corresponding tiling algebra. As a consequence, we obtain a characterization of c-matrices for any quiver mutation-equivalent to a type A Dynkin quiver.
Our model is developed using the dual tree of a polygonal subdivision. Given such a tree, we introduce a simplicial complex of noncrossing geodesics supported by the tree which we call the noncrossing complex. The facets of the noncrossing complex may be given the structure of an oriented flip graph. Special cases of the oriented flip graphs that may be expressed in this way include the Tamari order, type A Cambrian orders, oriented exchange graphs for quivers mutation-equivalent to a path quiver. We prove that the oriented flip graph of any noncrossing complex is a polygonal, congruence-uniform lattice. To do so, we express the oriented flip graph as a lattice quotient of a lattice of biclosed sets.
The facets of the noncrossing complex have an alternate ordering known as the shard intersection order. We prove that this shard intersection order is isomorphic to a lattice of noncrossing tree partitions. The oriented flip graph inherits a cyclic action from its congruence-uniform structure. On noncrossing tree partitions, this cyclic action generalizes the classical Kreweras complementation on noncrossing set partitions. We show that the data of a noncrossing tree partition and its Kreweras complement is equivalent to a 2-term simple-minded collection of the associated tiling algebra.

The theory of q-analogs develops many combinatorial formulas for finite vector spaces over a finite field with q elements--all in analogy with formulas for finite sets (which are the special case of q=1). A direct-sum decomposition of a finite vector space is the vector space analogue of a set partition. This paper develops the formulas for the number of direct-sum decompositions that are the q-analogs of the formulas for: (1) the number of set partitions with a given number partition signature; (2) the number of set partitions of an n-element set with m blocks (the Stirling numbers of the second kind); and (3) for the total number of set partitions of an n-element set (the Bell numbers).
Simsun permutations, simsun successions and simsun patterns
In this paper, we introduce the definitions of simsun succession, simsun cycle succession and simsun pattern. In particular, the ordinary simsun permutations are permutations avoiding simsun pattern 321. We study the descent and peak statistics on permutations avoiding simsun successions. We give a combinatorial interpretation of the q-Eulerian polynomials introduced by Brenti (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 91 (2000), 137-170). We also present a bijection between permutations avoiding simsun pattern 132 and set partitions.

We show that atoms of the $n$-generated free left-handed skew Boolean intersection algebra are in a bijective correspondence with pointed partitions of non-empty subsets of $\{1,2,\dots, n\}$. Furthermore, under the canonical inclusion into the $k$-generated free algebra, where $k\geq n$, an atom of the $n$-generated free algebra decomposes into an orthogonal join of atoms of the $k$-generated free algebra in an agreement with the containment relation on the respective partitions. As a consequence of these results, we describe the structure of finite free left-handed skew Boolean intersection algebras and express several their combinatorial characteristics in terms of Bell numbers and Stirling numbers of the second kind. We also look at the infinite case. For countably many generators, our constructions lead to the `partition analogue' of the Cantor tree whose boundary is the `partition variant' of the Cantor set.

In the aim to understand the generalization of Stirling numbers occurring in the bosonic normal ordering problem, several combinatorial models have been proposed. In particular, Blasiak \emph{et al.} defined combinatorial objects allowing to interpret the number of $S_{\bf{r,s}}(k)$ appearing in the identity $(a^†)^{r_n}a^{s_n}\cdots(a^†)^{r_1}a^{s_1}=(a^†)^α\displaystyle\sum S_{\bf{r,s}}(k)(a^†)^k a^k$, where $α$ is assumed to be non-negative. These objects are used to define a combinatorial Hopf algebra which specializes to the enveloping algebra of the Heisenberg Lie algebra. Here, we propose a new variant of this construction which admits a realization with variables. This means that we construct our algebra from a free algebra $\mathbb{C}\langle A \rangle$ using quotient and shifted product. The combinatorial objects (B-diagrams) are slightly different from those proposed by Blasiak \emph{et al.}, but give also a combinatorial interpretation of the generalized Stirling numbers together with a combinatorial Hopf algebra related to Heisenberg Lie algebra. The main difference comes from the fact that the B-diagrams have the same number of inputs and outputs. After studying the combinatorics and the enumeration of B-diagrams, we propose two constructions of algebras called Fusion algebra $\mathcal{F}$, defined using formal variable and another algebra $\mathcal{B}$ constructed directly from the B-diagrams. We show the connection between these two algebras and that $\mathcal{B}$ can be endowed with a Hopf structure. We recognize two already known combinatorial Hopf subalgebras of $\mathcal{B}$ : $\mathrm{WSym}$ the algebra of word symmetric functions indexed by set partitions and $\mathrm{BWSym}$ the algebra of biword symmetric functions indexed by set partitions into lists.

We study an abstract notion of tree structure which lies at the common core of various tree-like discrete structures commonly used in combinatorics: trees in graphs, order trees, nested subsets of a set, tree-decompositions of graphs and matroids etc.
Unlike graph-theoretical or order trees, these _tree sets_ can provide a suitable formalization of tree structure also for infinite graphs, matroids, and set partitions. Order trees reappear as oriented tree sets.
We show how each of the above structures defines a tree set, and which additional information, if any, is needed to reconstruct it from this tree set.

Even with the introduction of supercharacter theories, the representation theory of many unipotent groups remains mysterious. This paper constructs a family of supercharacter theories for normal pattern groups in a way that exhibit many of the combinatorial properties of the set partition combinatorics of the full uni-triangular groups, including combinatorial indexing sets, dimensions, and computable character formulas. Associated with these supercharacter theories is also a family of polytopes whose integer lattice points give the theories geometric underpinnings.

In 2000 Klazar introduced a new notion of pattern avoidance in the context of set partitions of $[n]=\{1,\ldots, n\}$. The purpose of the present paper is to undertake a study of the concept of Wilf-equivalence based on Klazar's notion. We determine all Wilf-equivalences for partitions with exactly two blocks, one of which is a singleton block, and we conjecture that, for $n\geq 4$, these are all the Wilf-equivalences except for those arising from complementation. If $τ$ is a partition of $[k]$ and $Π_n(τ)$ denotes the set of all partitions of $[n]$ that avoid $τ$, we establish inequalities between $|Π_n(τ_1)|$ and $|Π_n(τ_2)|$ for several choices of $τ_1$ and $τ_2$, and we prove that if $τ_2$ is the partition of $[k]$ with only one block, then $|Π_n(τ_1)| <|Π_n(τ_2)|$ for all $n>k$ and all partitions $τ_1$ of $[k]$ with exactly two blocks. We conjecture that this result holds for all partitions $τ_1$ of $[k]$. Finally, we enumerate $Π_n(τ)$ for all partitions $τ$ of $[4]$.

For an $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$, let $f(H)$ be the minimum number of complete $r$-partite $r$-uniform subhypergraphs of $H$ whose edge sets partition the edge set of $H$. For a graph $G$, $f(G)$ is the bipartition number of $G$ which was introduced by Graham and Pollak in 1971. In 1988, Erdős conjectured that if $G \in G(n,1/2)$, then with high probability $f(G)=n-α(G)$, where $α(G)$ is the independence number of $G$. This conjecture and related problems have received a lot of attention recently. In this paper, we study the value of $f(H)$ for a typical $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$. More precisely, we prove that if $(\log n)^{2.001}/n \leq p \leq 1/2$ and $H \in H^{(r)}(n,p)$, then with high probability $f(H)=(1-π(K^{(r-1)}_r)+o(1))\binom{n}{r-1}$, where $π(K^{(r-1)}_r)$ is the Turán density of $K^{(r-1)}_r$.

A weighted sum over generalized Tesler matrices

We generalize previous definitions of Tesler matrices to allow negative matrix entries and negative hook sums. Our main result is an algebraic interpretation of a certain weighted sum over these matrices, which we call the Tesler function. Our interpretation uses a new class of symmetric function specializations which are defined by their values on Macdonald polynomials. As a result of this interpretation, we obtain a Tesler function expression for the Hall inner product $\langle Δ_f e_n, p_{1^{n}}\rangle$, where $Δ_f$ is the delta operator introduced by Bergeron, Garsia, Haiman, and Tesler. We also provide simple formulas for various special cases of Tesler functions which involve $q,t$-binomial coefficients, ordered set partitions, and parking functions. These formulas prove two cases of the recent Delta Conjecture posed by Haglund, Remmel, and the author.
On some properties and relations between restricted barred preferential arrangements, multi-poly-Bernoulli numbers and related numbers
The introduction of bars in-between blocks of an ordered set partition(preferential arrangement) results in a barred ordered set partition(barred preferential arrange- ment). Having the restriction that some blocks of barred preferential arrangements to have a maximum of one block results in restricted barred preferential arrange- ments. In this study we establish relations between number of restricted barred preferential arrangements, multi-poly-Bernoulli numbers and numbers related to multi-poly-Bernoulli numbers. We prove a periodicity property satisfied by multi- poly-Bernoulli numbers having negative index, number of restricted barred prefer- ential arrangements and numbers related to multi-poly-Bernoulli numbers having negative index.

We conjecture two combinatorial interpretations for the symmetric function $Δ_{e_k} e_n$, where $Δ_f$ is an eigenoperator for the modified Macdonald polynomials defined by Bergeron, Garsia, Haiman, and Tesler. Both interpretations can be seen as generalizations of the Shuffle Conjecture of Haglund, Haiman, Remmel, Loehr, and Ulyanov, which was proved recently by Carlsson and Mellit. We show how previous work of the third author on Tesler matrices and ordered set partitions can be used to verify several cases of our conjectures. Furthermore, we use a reciprocity identity and LLT polynomials to prove another case. Finally, we show how our conjectures inspire 4-variable generalizations of the Catalan numbers, extending work of Garsia, Haiman, and the first author.

Let $B_t(n)$ be the number of set partitions of a set of size~$t$ into at most $n$ parts and let $B'_t(n)$ be the number of set partitions of $\{1,\ldots, t\}$ into at most $n$ parts such that no part contains both $1$ and~$t$ or both $i$ and $i+1$ for any $i \in \{1,\ldots,t-1\}$. We give two new combinatorial interpretations of the numbers $B_t(n)$ and $B'_t(n)$ using sequences of random-to-top shuffles, %that leave a deck of cards invariant, and sequences of box moves on the Young diagrams of partitions. Using these ideas we obtain a very short proof of a generalization of a result of Phatarfod on the eigenvalues of the random-to-top shuffle. We also prove analogous results for random-to-top shuffles that may flip certain cards. The proofs use the Solomon descent algebras of Types A, B and~D. We give generating functions and asymptotic results for all the combinatorial quantities studied in this paper.
Exponential formulas for models of complex reflection groups

In this paper we find some exponential formulas for the Betti numbers of the De Concini-Procesi minimal wonderful models Y_{G(r,p,n)} associated to the complex reflection groups G(r,p,n). Our formulas are different from the ones already known in the literature: they are obtained by a new combinatorial encoding of the elements of a basis of the cohomology by means of set partitions with weights and exponents.
We also point out that a similar combinatorial encoding can be used to describe the faces of the real spherical wonderful models of type A_{n-1}=G(1,1,n), B_n=G(2,1,n) and D_n=G(2,2,n). This provides exponential formulas for the f-vectors of the associated nestohedra: the Stasheff's associahedra (in this case closed formulas are well known) and the graph associahedra of type D_n.
Representation stability for cohomology of configuration spaces in $\mathbf{R}^d$

This paper studies representation stability in the sense of Church and Farb for representations of the symmetric group $S_n$ on the cohomology of the configuration space of $n$ ordered points in $\mathbf{R}^d$. This cohomology is known to vanish outside of dimensions divisible by $d-1$; it is shown here that the $S_n$-representation on the $i(d-1)^{st}$ cohomology stabilizes sharply at $n=3i$ (resp. $n=3i+1$) when $d$ is odd (resp. even).
The result comes from analyzing $S_n$-representations known to control the cohomology: the Whitney homology of set partition lattices for $d$ even, and the higher Lie representations for $d$ odd. A similar analysis shows that the homology of any rank-selected subposet in the partition lattice stabilizes by $n\geq 4i$, where $i$ is the maximum rank selected.
Further properties of the Whitney homology and more refined stability statements for $S_n$-isotypic components are also proven, including conjectures of J. Wiltshire-Gordon.
Universal and Near-Universal Cycles of Set Partitions

We study universal cycles of the set ${\cal P}(n,k)$ of $k$-partitions of the set $[n]:=\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$ and prove that the transition digraph associated with ${\cal P}(n,k)$ is Eulerian. But this does not imply that universal cycles (or ucycles) exist, since vertices represent equivalence classes of partitions! We use this result to prove, however, that ucycles of ${\cal P}(n,k)$ exist for all $n \geq 3$ when $k=2$. We reprove that they exist for odd $n$ when $k = n-1$ and that they do not exist for even $n$ when $k = n-1$. An infinite family of $(n,k)$ for which ucycles do not exist is shown to be those pairs for which $S(n-2, k-2)$ is odd ($3 \leq k < n-1$). We also show that there exist universal cycles of partitions of $[n]$ into $k$ subsets of distinct sizes when $k$ is sufficiently smaller than $n$, and therefore that there exist universal packings of the partitions in ${\cal P}(n,k)$. An analogous result for coverings completes the investigation.
