A new family of strongly regular graphs, called the general symplectic graphs $Sp(2ν, q)$, associated with nonsingular alternate matrices is introduced. Their parameters as strongly regular graphs, their chromatic numbers as well as their groups of graph automorphisms are determined.

We study continuous time Markov processes on graphs. The notion of frequency is introduced, which serves well as a scaling factor between any Markov time of a continuous time Markov process and that of its jump chain. As an application, we study ``multi-person simple random walks'' on a graph G with n vertices. There are n persons distributed randomly at the vertices of G. In each step of this discrete time Markov process, we randomly pick up a person and move it to a random adjacent vertex. We give estimate on the expected number of steps for these $n$ persons to meet all together at a specific vertex, given that they are at different vertices at the begininng. For regular graphs, our estimate is exact.

Combining results on quadrics in projective geometries with an algebraic interplay between finite fields and Galois rings, we construct the first known family of partial difference sets with negative Latin square type parameters in nonelementary abelian groups, the groups $\Z_4^{2k}\times \Z_2^{4 \ell-4k}$ for all $k$ when $\ell$ is odd and for all $k < \ell$ when $\ell$ is even. Similarly, we construct partial difference sets with Latin square type parameters in the same groups for all $k$ when $\ell$ is even and for all $k<\ell$ when $\ell$ is odd. These constructions provide the first example that the non-homomorphic bijection approach outlined by Hagita and Schmidt \cite{hagitaschmidt} can produce difference sets in groups that previously had no known constructions. Computer computations indicate that the strongly regular graphs associated to the PDSs are not isomorphic to the known graphs, and we conjecture that the family of strongly regular graphs will be new.
On the extreme eigenvalues of regular graphs
In this paper, we present an elementary proof of a theorem of Serre concerning the greatest eigenvalues of $k$-regular graphs. We also prove an analogue of Serre's theorem regarding the least eigenvalues of $k$-regular graphs: given $ε>0$, there exist a positive constant $c=c(ε,k)$ and a nonnegative integer $g=g(ε,k)$ such that for any $k$-regular graph $X$ with no odd cycles of length less than $g$, the number of eigenvalues $μ$ of $X$ such that $μ\leq -(2-ε)\sqrt{k-1}$ is at least $c|X|$. This implies a result of Winnie Li.

Given any integer d >= 3, let k be the smallest integer such that d < 2k log k. We prove that with high probability the chromatic number of a random d-regular graph is k, k+1, or k+2, and that if (2k-1) \log k < d < 2k \log k then the chromatic number is either k+1 or k+2.
The asymptotics of strongly regular graphs
A strongly regular graph is called trivial if it or its complement is a union of disjoint cliques. We prove that every infinite family of nontrivial strongly regular graphs is quasi-random in the sense of Chung, Graham and Wilson.
Non-backtracking random walks and cogrowth of graphs

Let X be a locally finite, connected graph without vertices of degree 1. Non-backtracking random walk moves at each step with equal probability to one of the "forward" neighbours of the actual state, i.e., it does not go back along the preceding edge to the preceding state. This is not a Markov chain, but can be turned into a Markov chain whose state space is the set of oriented edges of X. Thus we obtain for infinite X that the n-step non-backtracking transition probabilities tend to zero, and we can also compute their limit when X is finite. This provides a short proof of old results concerning cogrowth of groups, and makes the extension of that result to arbitrary regular graphs rigorous. Even when X is non-regular, but "small cycles are dense" in X, we show that the graph X is non-amenable if and only if the non-backtracking n-step transition probabilities decay exponentially fast. This is a partial generalization of the cogrowth criterion for regular graphs which comprises the original cogrowth criterion for finitely generated groups of Grigorchuk and Cohen.

We consider {\em monotone} embeddings of a finite metric space into low dimensional normed space. That is, embeddings that respect the order among the distances in the original space. Our main interest is in embeddings into Euclidean spaces. We observe that any metric on $n$ points can be embedded into $l_2^n$, while, (in a sense to be made precise later), for almost every $n$-point metric space, every monotone map must be into a space of dimension $Ω(n)$.
It becomes natural, then, to seek explicit constructions of metric spaces that cannot be monotonically embedded into spaces of sublinear dimension. To this end, we employ known results on {\em sphericity} of graphs, which suggest one example of such a metric space - that defined by a complete bipartitegraph. We prove that an $δn$-regular graph of order $n$, with bounded diameter has sphericity $Ω(n/(λ_2+1))$, where $λ_2$ is the second largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of the graph, and $0 < δ\leq \half$ is constant. We also show that while random graphs have linear sphericity, there are {\em quasi-random} graphs of logarithmic sphericity.
For the above bound to be linear, $λ_2$ must be constant. We show that if the second eigenvalue of an $n/2$-regular graph is bounded by a constant, then the graph is close to being complete bipartite. Namely, its adjacency matrix differs from that of a complete bipartite graph in only $o(n^2)$ entries. Furthermore, for any $0 < δ< \half$, and $λ_2$, there are only finitely many $δn$-regular graphs with second eigenvalue at most $λ_2$.
Constructing expander graphs by 2-lifts and discrepancy vs. spectral gap

We present a new explicit construction for expander graphs with nearly optimal spectral gap. The construction is based on a series of 2-lift operations.
Let $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices. A 2-lift of $G$ is a graph $H$ on $2n$ vertices, with a covering map $π:H \to G$. It is not hard to see that all eigenvalues of $G$ are also eigenvalues of $H$. In addition, $H$ has $n$ ``new'' eigenvalues. We conjecture that every $d$-regular graph has a 2-lift such that all new eigenvalues are in the range $[-2\sqrt{d-1},2\sqrt{d-1}]$ (If true, this is tight, e.g. by the Alon-Boppana bound). Here we show that every graph of maximal degree $d$ has a 2-lift such that all ``new'' eigenvalues are in the range $[-c \sqrt{d \log^3d}, c \sqrt{d \log^3d}]$ for some constant $c$. This leads to a polynomial time algorithm for constructing arbitrarily large $d$-regular graphs, with second eigenvalue $O(\sqrt{d \log^3 d})$.
The proof uses the following lemma: Let $A$ be a real symmetric matrix such that the $l_1$ norm of each row in $A$ is at most $d$. Let $α= \max_{x,y \in \{0,1\}^n, supp(x)\cap supp(y)=\emptyset} \frac {|xAy|} {||x||||y||}$. Then the spectral radius of $A$ is at most $c α\log(d/α)$, for some universal constant $c$.
An interesting consequence of this lemma is a converse to the Expander Mixing Lemma.

Let $X$ be $k$-regular graph on $v$ vertices and let $τ$ denote the least eigenvalue of its adjacency matrix $A(X)$. If $α(X)$ denotes the maximum size of an independent set in $X$, we have the following well known bound: \[ α(X) \le\frac{v}{1-\frac{k}τ}. \] It is less well known that if equality holds here and $S$ is a maximum independent set in $X$ with characteristic vector $x$, then the vector \[ x-\frac{|S|}{v}\one \] is an eigenvector for $A(X)$ with eigenvalue $τ$. In this paper we show how this can be used to characterise the maximal independent sets in certain classes of graphs. As a corollary we show that a graph defined on the partitions of $\{1,...,9\}$ with three cells of size three is a core.
Independent sets in certain classes of (almost) regular graphs
We enumerate the independent sets of several classes of regular and almost regular graphs and compute the corresponding generating functions. We also note the relations between these graphs and other combinatorial objects and, in some cases, construct the corresponding bijections.
Maximum Weight Independent Sets and Matchings in Sparse Random Graphs. Exact Results using the Local Weak Convergence Method

Let $G(n,c/n)$ and $G_r(n)$ be an $n$-node sparse random graph and a sparse random $r$-regular graph, respectively, and let ${\cal I}(n,r)$ and ${\cal I}(n,c)$ be the sizes of the largest independent set in $G(n,c/n)$ and $G_r(n)$. The asymptotic value of ${\cal I}(n,c)/n$ as $n\to\infty$, can be computed using the Karp-Sipser algorithm when $c\leq e$. For random cubic graphs, $r=3$, it is only known that $.432\leq\liminf_n {\cal I}(n,3)/n \leq \limsup_n {\cal I}(n,3)\leq .4591$ with high probability (w.h.p.) as $n\to\infty$, as shown by Frieze and Suen and by Bollobas, respectively.
In this paper we assume in addition that the nodes of the graph are equipped with non-negative weights, independently generated according to some common distribution, and we consider instead the maximum weight of an independent set. Surprisingly, we discover that for certain weight distributions, the limit $\lim_n {\cal I}(n,c)/n$ can be computed exactly even when $c>e$, and $\lim_n {\cal I}(n,r)/n$ can be computed exactly for some $r\geq 2$. For example, when the weights are exponentially distributed with parameter 1, $\lim_n {\cal I}(n,2e)/n\approx .5517$, and $\lim_n {\cal I}(n,3)/n\approx .6077$. Our results are established using the recently developed local weak convergence method further reduced to a certain local optimality property exhibited by the models we consider.
Discrete Green's functions for products of regular graphs
Discrete Green's functions are the inverses or pseudo-inverses of combinatorial Laplacians. We present compact formulas for discrete Green's functions, in terms of the eigensystems of corresponding Laplacians, for products of regular graphs with or without boundary. Explicit formulas are derived for the cycle, torus, and 3-dimensional torus, as is an inductive formula for the $t$-dimensional torus with $n$ vertices, from which the Green's function can be completely determined in time $O(t n^{2-1/t}\log{n})$. These Green's functions may be used in conjunction with diffusion-like problems on graphs such as electric potential, random walks, and chip-firing games or other balancing games.
An Affine Linear Solution for the 2-Face Colorable Gauss Code Problem in the Klein Bottle and a Quadratic System for Arbitrary Closed Surfaces
Let $\bar{P}$ be a sequence of length $2n$ in which each element of $\{1,2,...,n\}$ occurs twice. Let $P'$ be a closed curve in a closed surface $S$ having $n$ points of simple auto-intersections, inducing a 4-regular graph embedded in $S$ which is 2-face colorable. If the sequence of auto-intersections along $P'$ is given by $\bar{P}$, we say that is a {\em $P'$ 2-face colorable solution for the Gauss Code $\bar{P}$ on surface $S$} or a {\em lacet for $\bar{P}$ on $S$}. In this paper we present a necessary and sufficient condition yielding these solutions when $S$ is Klein bottle. The condition take the form of a system of $m$ linear equations in $2n$ variables over $\Z_2$, where $m \le n(n-1)/2$. Our solution generalize solutions for the projective plane and on the sphere. In a strong way, the Klein bottle is an extremal case admitting an affine linear solution: we show that the similar problem on the torus and on surfaces of higher connectivity are modelled by a quadratic system of equations.

We give new general formulas for the asymptotics of the number of spanning trees of a large graph. A special case answers a question of McKay (1983) for regular graphs. The general answer involves a quantity for infinite graphs that we call "tree entropy", which we show is a logarithm of a normalized determinant of the graph Laplacian for infinite graphs. Tree entropy is also expressed using random walks. We relate tree entropy to the metric entropy of the uniform spanning forest process on quasi-transitive amenable graphs, extending a result of Burton and Pemantle (1993).

Certain notorious nonlinear binary codes contain more codewords than any known linear code. These include the codes constructed by Nordstrom-Robinson, Kerdock, Preparata, Goethals, and Delsarte-Goethals. It is shown here that all these codes can be very simply constructed as binary images under the Gray map of linear codes over Z_4, the integers mod 4 (although this requires a slight modification of the Preparata and Goethals codes). The construction implies that all these binary codes are distance invariant. Duality in the Z_4 domain implies that the binary images have dual weight distributions. The Kerdock and "Preparata" codes are duals over Z_4 -- and the Nordstrom-Robinson code is self-dual -- which explains why their weight distributions are dual to each other. The Kerdock and "Preparata" codes are Z_4-analogues of first-order Reed-Muller and extended Hamming codes, respectively. All these codes are extended cyclic codes over Z_4, which greatly simplifies encoding and decoding. An algebraic hard-decision decoding algorithm is given for the "Preparata" code and a Hadamard-transform soft-decision decoding algorithm for the Kerdock code. Binary first- and second-order Reed-Muller codes are also linear over Z_4, but extended Hamming codes of length n >= 32 and the Golay code are not. Using Z_4-linearity, a new family of distance regular graphs are constructed on the cosets of the "Preparata" code.
The domatic number of regular and almost regular graphs
The domatic number of a graph $G$, denoted $dom(G)$, is the maximum possible cardinality of a family of disjoint sets of vertices of $G$, each set being a dominating set of $G$. It is well known that every graph without isolated vertices has $dom(G) \geq 2$. For every $k$, it is known that there are graphs with minimum degree at least $k$ and with $dom(G)=2$. In this paper we prove that this is not the case if $G$ is $k$-regular or {\em almost} $k$-regular (by ``almost'' we mean that the minimum degree is $k$ and the maximum degree is at most $Ck$ for some fixed real number $C \geq 1$). In this case we prove that $dom(G) \geq (1+o_k(1))k/(2\ln k)$. We also prove that the order of magnitude $k/\ln k$ cannot be improved. One cannot replace the constant 2 with a constant smaller than 1. The proof uses the so called {\em semi-random method} which means that combinatorial objects are generated via repeated applications of the probabilistic method; in our case iterative applications of the Lovász Local Lemma.
A Heawood-type result for the algebraic connectivity of graphs on surfaces
We prove that the algebraic connectivity a(G) of a graph embedded on a nonplanar surface satisfies a Heawood-type result. More precisely, it is shown that the algebraic connectivity of a surface S, defined as the supremum of a(G) over all graphs that can be embedded in S, is equal to the chromatic number of S. Furthermore, and with the possible exception of the Klein bottle, we prove that this bound is attained only in the case of the maximal complete graph that can be embedded in S. In the planar case, we show that, at least for some classes of graphs which include the set of regular graphs, a(G) is less than or equal to four. As an application of these results and techniques, we obtain a lower bound for the genus of Ramanujan graphs.
We also present some bounds for the asymptotic behaviour of a(G) for certain classes of graphs as the number of vertices goes to infinity.
On some extremal problems in graph theory
In this paper we are concerned with various graph invariants (girth, diameter, expansion constants, eigenvalues of the Laplacian, tree number) and their analogs for weighted graphs -- weighing the graph changes a combinatorial problem to one in analysis. We study both weighted and unweighted graphs which are extremal for these invariants. In the unweighted case we concentrate on finding extrema among all (usually) regular graphs with the same number of vertices; we also study the relationships between such graphs.
Graphical Enumeration: A Species-Theoretic Approach
An operation on species corresponding to the inner plethysm of their associated cycle index series is constructed. This operation, the inner plethysm of species, is generalized to n-sorted species. Polynomial maps on species are studied and used to extend inner plethysm and other operations to virtual species. Finally, inner plethysm and other operations on species are applied to various problems in graph theory.
In particular, regular graphs, and digraphs in which every vertex has outdegree k, are enumerated.
