Irregular Subgraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We suggest two related conjectures dealing with the existence of spanning irregular subgraphs of graphs. The first asserts that any $d$-regular graph on $n$ vertices contains a spanning subgraph in which the number of vertices of each degree between $0$ and $d$ deviates from $\frac{n}{d+1}$ by at most $2$. The second is that every graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree $δ$ contains a spanning subgraph in which the number of vertices of each degree does not exceed $\frac{n}{δ+1}+2$. Both conjectures remain open, but we prove several asymptotic relaxations for graphs with a large number of vertices $n$. In particular we show that if $d^3 \log n \leq o(n)$ then every $d$-regular graph with $n$ vertices contains a spanning subgraph in which the number of vertices of each degree between $0$ and $d$ is $(1+o(1))\frac{n}{d+1}$. We also prove that any graph with $n$ vertices and minimum degree $δ$ contains a spanning subgraph in which no degree is repeated more than $(1+o(1))\frac{n}{δ+1}+2$ times.

The signless Laplacian state transfer in Q-graph
The $\mathcal{Q}$-graph of a graph $G$, denoted by $\mathcal{Q}(G)$, is the graph derived from $G$ by plugging a new vertex to each edge of $G$ and adding a new edge between two new vertices which lie on adjacent edges of $G$. In this paper, we consider to study the existence of the signless Laplacian perfect state transfer and signless Laplacian pretty good state transfer in $\mathcal{Q}$-graphs of graphs. We show that, if all the signless Laplacian eigenvalues of a regular graph $G$ are integers, then the $\mathcal{Q}$-graph of $G$ has no signless Laplacian perfect state transfer. We also give a sufficient condition that the $\mathcal{Q}$-graph of a regular graph has signless Laplacian pretty good state transfer when $G$ has signless Laplacian perfect state transfer between two specific vertices.

On the principal eigenvector of a graph
The principal ratio of a connected graph $G$, $γ(G)$, is the ratio between the largest and smallest coordinates of the principal eigenvector of the adjacency matrix of $G$. Over all connected graphs on $n$ vertices, $γ(G)$ ranges from $1$ to $n^{cn}$. Moreover, $γ(G)=1$ if and only if $G$ is regular. This indicates that $γ(G)$ can be viewed as an irregularity measure of $G$, as first suggested by Tait and Tobin (El. J. Lin. Alg. 2018). We are interested in how stable this measure is. In particular, we ask how $γ$ changes when there is a small modification to a regular graph $G$. We show that this ratio is polynomially bounded if we remove an edge belonging to a cycle of bounded length in $G$, while the ratio can jump from $1$ to exponential if we join a pair of vertices at distance $2$. We study the connection between the spectral gap of a regular graph and the stability of its principal ratio. A naive bound shows that given a constant multiplicative spectral gap and bounded degree, the ratio remains polynomially bounded if we add or delete an edge. Using results from matrix perturbation theory, we show that given an additive spectral gap greater than $(2+ε)\sqrt{n}$, the ratio stays bounded after adding or deleting an edge.

Site Percolation on Pseudo-Random Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider vertex percolation on pseudo-random $d-$regular graphs. The previous study by the second author established the existence of phase transition from small components to a linear (in $\frac{n}{d}$) sized component, at $p=\frac{1}{d}$. In the supercritical regime, our main result recovers the sharp asymptotic of the size of the largest component, and shows that all other components are typically much smaller. Furthermore, we consider other typical properties of the largest component such as the number of edges, existence of a long cycle and expansion. In the subcritical regime, we strengthen the upper bound on the likely component size.
Total Difference Labeling of Regular Infinite Graphs
Published in Involve 16 (2023) 765-781 • View Publication • BIB
Given a graph $G$, a \textit{$k$-total difference labeling} of the graph is a total labeling $f$ from the set of edges and vertices to the set $\{1, 2, \cdots k\}$ satisfying that for any edge $\{u,v\}$, $f(\{u,v\})=|f(u)-f(v)|$. If $G$ is a graph, then $χ_{td}(G)$ is the minimum $k$ such that there is a $k$-total difference labeling of $G$ in which no two adjacent labels are identical. We extend prior work on total difference labeling by improving the upper bound on $χ_{td}(K_n)$ and also by proving results concerning infinite regular graphs.

Equitable partitions for Ramanajun graphs
For d-regular graph G, an edge-signing sigma:E(G) \rightarrow {-1,1} is called a good signing if the absolute eigenvalues of adjacency matrix are at most 2 \sqrt{d-1}. Bilu-Linial conjectured that for each regular graph there exists a good signing. In this paper, by using new concept "Equitable Partition", we solve the Bilu-Linial Conjecture for some cases. We show that how to find out a good signing for special complete graphs and lexicographic product of two graphs. In particular, if there exist two good signings for graph G, then we can find a good signing for a 2-lift of G.

A class of graphs with distinguishing index $\bf D' \leq 3$
An edge-coloring of a graph is called asymmetric if the only automorphism which preserves it is the identity. Lehner, Pilśniak, and Stawiski proved that all connected regular graphs except $K_2$ admit an asymmetric edge-coloring with three colors. We generalize this result for graphs whose minimal degree $δ$ and the maximal degree $Δ$ satisfy $δ\geq Δ/2$.

Efficient (j,k)-Domination in Regular Graphs
Rubalcaba and Slater (Robert R. Rubalcaba and Peter J. Slater. Efficient (j,k)-domination. Discuss. Math. Graph Theory, 27(3):409-423, 2007.) define a $(j,k)$-dominating function on graph $X$ as a function $f:V(X)\rightarrow \{0,\ldots,j\}$ so that for each $v\in V(X)$, $f(N[v])\geq k$, where $N[v]$ is the closed neighbourhood of $v$. Such a function is efficient if all of the vertex inequalities are met with equality. They give a simple necessary condition for efficient domination, namely: if $X$ is an $r$-regular graph on $n$ vertices that has an efficient $(1,k)$-dominating function, then the size of the corresponding dominating set divides $n\cdot k$. The Hamming graph $H(q,d)$ is the graph on the vectors $\mathbb{Z}_q^d$ where two vectors are adjacent if and only if they are at Hamming distance $1$. We show that if $q$ is prime, then the previous necessary condition is sufficient for $H(q,d)$ to have an efficient $(1,k)$-dominating function. This result extends a result of Lee (Jaeun Lee. Independent perfect domination sets in Cayley graphs. J. Graph Theory, 37(4):213-219, 2001.) on independent perfect domination in Cayley graphs. We mention difficulties that arise for $H(q,d)$ when $q$ is a prime power but not prime.

On Distribution of Laplacian Eigenvalues of Graphs
The work in this thesis concerns the investigation of eigenvalues of the Laplacian matrix, normalized Laplacian matrix, signless Laplacian matrix and distance signless Laplacian matrix of graphs. In Chapter 1, we present a brief introduction of spectral graph theory with some definitions. Chapter $2$ deals with the sum of $ k $ largest Laplacian eigenvalues $ S_{k}(G) $ of graph $ G $ and Brouwer's conjecture. We obtain the upper bounds for $ S_{k}(G) $ for some classes of graphs and use them to verify Brouwer's conjecture for these classes of graphs. Also, we prove Brouwer's conjecture for more general classes of graphs. In Chapter $3$, we investigate the Laplacian eigenvalues of graphs and the Laplacian energy conjecture for trees. We prove the Laplacian energy conjecture completely for trees of diameter $ 4 $. Further, we prove this conjecture for all trees having at most $ \frac{9n}{25}-2 $ non-pendent vertices. Also, we obtain the sufficient conditions for the truth of conjecture for trees of order $ n $. In Chapter $4$, we determine the normalized Laplacian spectrum of the joined union of regular graphs and obtain the spectrum of some well known graphs. As consequences of joined union, we obtain the normalized Laplacian spectrum of power graphs associated to finite cyclic groups. In Chapter $5$, we find the distance signless Laplacian spectrum of regular graphs and zero-divisor graphs associated to finite commutative ring. Also, we find the bounds for spectral radius of generalized distance matrix. Further, we obtain the generalized distance energy for bipartite graphs and trees. We prove that the complete bipartite graph has minimum generalized distance energy among all connected bipartite graphs. Besides, for $ α\in \big(0, \frac{2n}{3n-2}\big) $, we show that the star graph has minimum generalized distance energy among all trees.

On Hamiltonicity of regular graphs with bounded second neighborhoods
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathcal{G}(k)$ denote the set of connected $k$-regular graphs $G$, $k\geq2$, where the number of vertices at distance 2 from any vertex in $G$ does not exceed $k$. Asratian (2006) showed (using other terminology) that a graph $G\in\mathcal{G}(k)$ is Hamiltonian if for each vertex $u$ of $G$ the subgraph induced by the set of vertices at distance at most 2 from $u$ is 2-connected. We prove here that in fact all graphs in the sets $\mathcal{G}(3)$, $\mathcal{G}(4)$ and $\mathcal{G}(5)$ are Hamiltonian. We also prove that the problem of determining whether there exists a Hamilton cycle in a graph from $\mathcal{G}(6)$ is NP-complete. Nevertheless we show that every locally connected graph $G\in\mathcal{G}(k)$, $k\geq6$, is Hamiltonian and that for each non-Hamiltonian cycle $C$ in $G$ there exists a cycle $C'$ of length $|V(C)|+\ell$ in $G$, $\ell\in\{1,2\}$, such that $V(C)\subset V(C')$. Finally, we note that all our conditions for Hamiltonicity apply to infinitely many graphs with large diameters.

Maximal cocliques of a strongly regular graph with parameters (2048,276,44,36)
This article considers a strongly regular graph with parameters (2048,276,44,36) that is related to the extended binary Golay code. That graph is known since about 1975 but there seems to be not much information on the contained maximal cocliques. The source package of this article contains a data file that encodes a sequence of maximal independence sets of that graph, covering all sizes from 20 to 67 and the size 72, and a Pascal program to check this assertion and to optionally generate a text file (to be read by the computer algebra system GAP) that contains the adjacency lists of that graph and the list of the independence sets.
Graphs with large palette index
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given an edge-coloring of a graph, the palette of a vertex is defined as the set of colors of the edges which are incident with it. We define the palette index of a graph as the minimum number of distinct palettes, taken over all edge-colorings, occurring among the vertices of the graph. Several results about the palette index of some specific classes of graphs are known. In this paper we propose a different approach that leads to new and more general results on the palette index. Our main theorem gives a sufficient condition for a graph to have palette index larger than its minimum degree. In the second part of the paper, by using such a result, we answer to two open problems on this topic. First, for every $r$ odd, we construct a family of $r$-regular graphs with palette index reaching the maximum admissible value. After that, we construct the first known family of simple graphs whose palette index grows quadratically with respect to their maximum degree.

On Magic Distinct Labellings of Simple Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A magic labelling of a graph $G$ with magic sum $s$ is a labelling of the edges of $G$ by nonnegative integers such that for each vertex $v\in V$, the sum of labels of all edges incident to $v$ is equal to the same number $s$. Stanley gave remarkable results on magic labellings, but the distinct labelling case is much more complicated. We consider the complete construction of all magic labellings of a given graph $G$. The idea is illustrated in detail by dealing with three regular graphs. We give combinatorial proofs. The structure result was used to enumerate the corresponding magic distinct labellings.

On independent domination of regular graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a graph $G$, a dominating set of $G$ is a set $S$ of vertices such that each vertex not in $S$ has a neighbor in $S$. The domination number of $G$, denoted $γ(G)$, is the minimum size of a dominating set of $G$. The independent domination number of $G$, denoted $i(G)$, is the minimum size of a dominating set of $G$ that is also independent. Note that every graph has an independent dominating set, as a maximal independent set is equivalent to an independent dominating set. Let $G$ be a connected $k$-regular graph that is not $K_{k, k}$ where $k\geq 4$. Generalizing a result by Lam, Shiu, and Sun, we prove that $i(G)\le \frac{k-1}{2k-1}|V(G)|$, which is tight for $k = 4$. This answers a question by Goddard et al. in the affirmative. We also show that $\frac{i(G)}{γ(G)} \le \frac{k^3-3k^2+2}{2k^2-6k+2}$, strengthening upon a result of Knor, Škrekovski, and Tepeh. In addition, we prove that a graph $G'$ with maximum degree at most $4$ satisfies $i(G') \le \frac{5}{9}|V(G')|$, which is also tight.

A note on 1-2-3 and 1-2 Conjectures for 3-regular graphs
The 1-2-3 Conjecture, posed by Karoński, Łuczak and Thomason, asked whether every connected graph $G$ different from $K_2$ can be 3-edge-weighted so that every two adjacent vertices of $G$ get distinct sums of incident weights. The 1-2 Conjecture states that if vertices also receive colors and the vertex color is added to the sum of its incident edges, then adjacent vertices can be distinguished using only $\{ 1,2\}$. In this paper we confirm 1-2 Conjecture for 3-regular graphs. Meanwhile, we show that every 3-regular graph can achieve a neighbor sum distinguishing edge coloring by using 4 colors, which answers 1-2-3 Conjecture positively.

Strongly regular graphs satisfying the 4-vertex condition
Published • View Publication • BIB
We survey the area of strongly regular graphs satisfying the 4-vertex condition and find several new families. We describe a switching operation on collinearity graphs of polar spaces that produces cospectral graphs. The obtained graphs satisfy the 4-vertex condition if the original graph belongs to a symplectic polar space.
On normalized Laplacian eigenvalues of power graphs associated to finite cyclic groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a simple connected graph $ G $ of order $ n $, the normalized Laplacian is a square matrix of order $ n $, defined as $\mathcal{L}(G)= D(G)^{-\frac{1}{2}}L(G)D(G)^{-\frac{1}{2}}$, where $ D(G)^{-\frac{1}{2}} $ is the diagonal matrix whose $ i$-th diagonal entry is $ \frac{1}{\sqrt{d_{i}}} $. In this article, we find the normalized Laplacian eigenvalues of the joined union of regular graphs in terms of the adjacency eigenvalues and the eigenvalues of quotient matrix associated with graph $ G $. For a finite group $\mathcal{G}$, the power graph $\mathcal{P}(\mathcal{G})$ of a group $ \mathcal{G} $ is defined as the simple graph in which two distinct vertices are joined by an edge if and only if one is the power of other. As a consequence of the joined union of graphs, we investigate the normalized Laplacian eigenvalues of power graphs of finite cyclic group $ \mathbb{Z}_{n}. $

Degrees in link graphs of regular graphs
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics Volume 29, Issue 2 (2022) Article Number P2.23 • View Publication • BIB
We analyse an extremal question on the degrees of the link graphs of a finite regular graph, that is, the subgraphs induced by non-trivial spheres. We show that if $G$ is $d$-regular and connected but not complete then some link graph of $G$ has minimum degree at most $\lfloor 2d/3\rfloor-1$, and if $G$ is sufficiently large in terms of $d$ then some link graph has minimum degree at most $\lfloor d/2\rfloor-1$; both bounds are best possible. We also give the corresponding best-possible result for the corresponding problem where subgraphs induced by balls, rather than spheres, are considered. We motivate these questions by posing a conjecture concerning expansion of link graphs in large bounded-degree graphs, together with a heuristic justification thereof.

Gap sets for the spectra of regular graphs with minimum spectral gap
Published • View Publication • BIB
Following recent work by Kollár and Sarnak, we study gaps in the spectra of large connected cubic and quartic graphs with minimum spectral gap. We focus on two sequences of graphs, denoted $Δ_n$ and $Γ_n$ which are more `symmetric' compared to the other graphs in these two families, respectively. We prove that $(1,\sqrt{5}]$ is a gap interval for $Δ_n$, and $[(-1+\sqrt{17})/2,3]$ is a gap interval for $Γ_n$. We conjecture that these two are indeed maximal gap intervals. As a by-product, we show that the eigenvalues of $Δ_n$ lying in the interval $[-3,-\sqrt{5}]$ (in particular, its minimum eigenvalue) converge to $(1-\sqrt{33})/2$ and the eigenvalues of $Γ_n$ lying in the interval $[-4,-(1+\sqrt{17})/2]$ (and in particular, its minimum eigenvalue) converge to $1-\sqrt{13}$ as $n$ tends to infinity. The proofs of the above results heavily depend on the following property which can be of independent interest: with few exceptions, all the eigenvalues of connected cubic and quartic graphs with minimum spectral gap are simple.

Injective coloring of graphs revisited
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 2023 • View Publication • BIB
An open packing in a graph $G$ is a set $S$ of vertices in $G$ such that no two vertices in $S$ have a common neighbor in $G$. The injective chromatic number $χ_i(G)$ of $G$ is the smallest number of colors assigned to vertices of $G$ such that each color class is an open packing. Alternatively, the injective chromatic number of $G$ is the chromatic number of the two-step graph of $G$, which is the graph with the same vertex set as $G$ in which two vertices are adjacent if they have a common neighbor. The concept of injective coloring has been studied by many authors, while in the present paper we approach it from two novel perspectives, related to open packings and the two-step graph operation. We prove several general bounds on the injective chromatic number expressed in terms of the open packing number. In particular, we prove that $χ_{i}(G)\geq \frac{1}{2}+\sqrt{\frac{1}{4}+\frac{2m-n}{\opack}}$ holds for any connected graph $G$ of order $n\geq2$, size $m$, and the open packing number $\opack$, and characterize the class of graphs attaining the bound. Regarding the well-known bound $χ_i(G)\ge Δ(G)$, we describe the family of extremal graphs and prove that deciding when the equality holds (even for regular graphs) is NP-complete, solving an open problem from an earlier paper. Next, we consider the chromatic number of the two-step graph of a graph, and compare it with the clique number and the maximum degree of the graph. We present two large families of graphs in which $χ_i(G)$ equals the cardinality of a largest clique of the two-step graph of $G$. Finally, we consider classes of graphs that admit an injective coloring in which all color classes are maximal open packings. We give characterizations of three subclasses of these graphs among graphs with diameter $2$, and find a partial characterization of hypercubes with this property.
