Tangled Paths: A Random Graph Model from Mallows Permutations
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 32(2), P2.35, 2025 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the random graph $\mathcal{P}(n,q)$ which results from taking the union of two paths of length $n\geq 1$, where the vertices of one of the paths have been relabelled according to a Mallows permutation with parameter $0<q(n)\leq 1$. This random graph model, the tangled path, goes through an evolution: if $q$ is close to $0$ the graph bears resemblance to a path, and as $q$ tends to $1$ it becomes an expander. In an effort to understand the evolution of $\mathcal{P}(n,q)$ we determine the treewidth and cutwidth of $\mathcal{P}(n,q)$ up to log factors for all $q$. We also show that the property of having a separator of size one has a sharp threshold. In addition, we prove bounds on the diameter, and vertex isoperimetric number for specific values of $q$.

Cycles on a multiset with only even-odd drops
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a finite subset $A$ of $\mathbb{Z}_{>0}$, Lazar and Wachs (2019) conjectured that the number of cycles on $A$ with only even-odd drops is equal to the number of D-cycles on $A$. In this note, we introduce cycles on a multiset with only even-odd drops and prove bijectively a multiset version of their conjecture. As a consequence, the number of cycles on $[2n]$ with only even-odd drops equals the Genocchi number $g_n$. With Laguerre histories as an intermediate structure, we also construct a bijection between a class of permutations of length $2n-1$ known to be counted by $g_n$ invented by Dumont and the cycles on $[2n]$ with only even-odd drops.

New families of flag-transitive linear spaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we construct new families of flag-transitive linear spaces with $q^{2n}$ points and $q^{2}$ points on each line that admit a one-dimensional affine automorphism group. We achieve this by building a natural connection with permutation polynomials of $\mathbb{F}_{q^{2}}$ of a particular form and following the scheme of Pauley and Bamberg in [A construction of one-dimensional affine flag-transitive linear spaces, Finite Fields Appl. 14 (2008) 537-548].
On maximum intersecting sets in direct and wreath product of groups
For a permutation group $G$ acting on a set $V$, a subset $I$ of $G$ is said to be an intersecting set if for every pair of elements $g,h\in I$ there exists $v \in V$ such that $g(v) = h(v)$. The intersection density $ρ(G)$ of a transitive permutation group $G$ is the maximum value of the quotient $|I|/|G_v|$ where $G_v$ is a stabilizer of a point $v\in V$ and $I$ runs over all intersecting sets in $G$. If $G_v$ is the largest intersecting set in $G$ then $G$ is said to have the Erdős-Ko-Rado (EKR)-property, and moreover, $G$ has the strict-EKR-property if every intersecting set of maximum size in $G$ is a coset of a point stabilizer. Intersecting sets in $G$ coincide with independent sets in the so-called derangement graph $Γ_G$, defined as the Cayley graph on $G$ with connection set consisting of all derangements, that is, fixed-point free elements of $G$. In this paper a conjecture regarding the existence of transitive permutation groups whose derangement graphs are complete multipartite graphs, posed by Meagher, Razafimahatratra and Spiga in [J.Combin. Theory Ser. A 180 (2021), 105390], is proved. The proof uses direct product of groups. Questions regarding maximum intersecting sets in direct and wreath products of groups and the (strict)-EKR-property of these group products are also investigated. In addition, some errors appearing in the literature on this topic are corrected.

The covering radius of permutation designs
A notion of $t$-designs in the symmetric group on $n$ letters was introduced by Godsil in 1988. In particular $t$-transitive sets of permutations form a $t$-design. We derive upper bounds on the covering radius of these designs, as a function of $n$ and $t$ and in terms of the largest zeros of Charlier polynomials.
Restricted generating trees for weak orderings
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 24, no. 1, Combinatorics (March 21, 2022) dmtcs:8350 • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by the study of pattern avoidance in the context of permutations and ordered partitions, we consider the enumeration of weak-ordering chains obtained as leaves of certain restricted rooted trees. A tree of order $n$ is generated by inserting a new variable into each node at every step. A node becomes a leaf either after $n$ steps or when a certain stopping condition is met. In this paper we focus on conditions of size 2 ($x=y$, $x<y$, or $x\le y$) and several conditions of size 3. Some of the cases considered here lead to the study of descent statistics of certain `almost' pattern-avoiding permutations.

Cycles of even-odd drop permutations and continued fractions of Genocchi numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recently, Lazar and Wachs (arXiv:1910.07651) showed that the (median) Genocchi numbers play a fundamental role in the study of the homogenized Linial arrangement and obtained two new permutation models (called D-permutations and E-permutations) for (median) Genocchi numbers. They further conjecture that the distributions of cycle numbers over the two models are equal. In a follow-up, Eu et al. (arXiv:2103.09130) further proved the gamma-positivity of the descent polynomials of even-odd descent permutations, which are in bijection with E-permutations by Foata's fundamental transformation. This paper merges the above two papers by considering a general moment sequence which encompasses the number of cycles and number of drops of E-permutations. Using the combinatorial theory of continued fraction, the moment connection enables us to confirm Lazar-Wachs' conjecture and obtain a natural $(p,q)$-analogue of Eu et al's descent polynomials. Furthermore, we show that the $γ$-coefficients of our $(p,q)$-analogue of descent polynomials have the same factorization flavor as the $γ$-coeffcients of Brändén's $(p,q)$-Eulerian polynomials.

Self-dual polyhedra of given degree sequence
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given vertex valencies admissible for a self-dual polyhedral graph, we describe an algorithm to explicitly construct such a polyhedron. Inputting in the algorithm permutations of the degree sequence can give rise to non-isomorphic graphs. As an application, we find as a function of $n\geq 3$ the minimal number of vertices for a self-dual polyhedron with at least one vertex of degree $i$ for each $3\leq i\leq n$, and construct such polyhedra. Moreover, we find a construction for non-self-dual polyhedral graphs of minimal order with at least one vertex of degree $i$ and at least one $i$-gonal face for each $3\leq i\leq n$.

KK-like relations of $α^{\prime}$ corrections to disk amplitudes
Published in JHEP 03 (2022) 012 • View Publication • BIB
Inspired by the definition of color-dressed amplitudes in string theory, we define analogous {\it color-dressed permutations} replacing the color-ordered string amplitudes by their corresponding permutations. Decomposing the color traces into symmetrized traces and structure constants, the color-dressed permutations define {\it BRST-invariant permutations}, which we show are elements of the inverse Solomon descent algebra and we find a closed formula for them. We then present evidence that these permutations encode KK-like relations among the different $α'$ corrections to disk amplitudes refined by their motivic MZV content. In particular, the number of linearly independent amplitudes at a given ${α^{\prime}}$ order and motivic MZV content is given by (sums of) Stirling cycle numbers. In addition, we show how the superfield expansion of BRST invariants of the pure spinor formalism corresponding to ${α^{\prime}}^2 f_2$ corrections is encoded in the descent algebra.

Boolean intersection ideals of permutations in the Bruhat order
Published • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by recent work with Mazorchuk, we characterize the conditions under which the intersection of two principal order ideals in the Bruhat order is boolean. That characterization is presented in three versions: in terms of reduced words, in terms of permutation patterns, and in terms of permutation support. The equivalence of these properties follows from an analysis of what it means to have a specific letter repeated in a permutation's reduced words; namely, that a specific 321-pattern appears.

Graceful and Strongly Graceful Permutations
A graceful labelling of a graph G is an injective function f from the set of vertices of G into the set {0,1,...,|EG|} such that if edge uv is assigned the label |f(u)-f(v)| then all edge labels have distinct values. A strong graceful labelling of a tree T with a perfect matching is a graceful labelling of T with the additional property that the sum of the vertex labels of each odd labelled edge add up to |ET|. A lobster or a 2-distant tree is a tree T that contains a path P such that any vertex of T is a distance at most 2 from a vertex of P. In this paper, we define generalised strongly graceful permutations and discover two new permutations in addition to the known permutation that is obtained by replacing each vertex label f(v) by |ET|- f(v). We use these permutations to prove, by induction, that a lobster with a perfect matching that consists of the set of end edges of the lobster, is strongly graceful. Further, we show that there exist strongly graceful labellings that assign the label 0 to four specific vertices of any tree belonging to this family of lobsters. By using the technique developed in this paper we will, further, present a tractable way for proving an equivalent form of Bermond conjecture which states that all lobsters are graceful. Two out of a total of three cases of the proposed equivalent form of Bermond conjecture are completed leaving the third case open for refutation or completion.
Cocyclic braces and indecomposable cocyclic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 150 (2022), 4223-4239 • View Publication • BIB
We study indecomposable involutive set-theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation with cyclic permutation groups (cocyclic solutions). In particular, we show that there is no one-to-one correspondence between indecomposable cocyclic solutions and cocyclic braces which contradicts recent results in \cite{Rump21}.

Vincular Pattern Avoidance on Cyclic Permutations
Published in Enumer. Comb. Appl. 2(4):PP3 (2022) • View Publication • BIB
Pattern avoidance for permutations has been extensively studied, and has been generalized to vincular patterns, where certain elements can be required to be adjacent. In addition, cyclic permutations, i.e., permutations written in a circle rather than a line, have been frequently studied, including in the context of pattern avoidance. We investigate vincular pattern avoidance on cyclic permutations. In particular, we enumerate many avoidance classes of sets of vincular patterns of length 3, including a complete enumeration for all single patterns of length 3. Further, several of the avoidance classes corresponding to a single vincular pattern of length 4 are enumerated by the Catalan numbers. We then study more generally whether sets of vincular patterns of an arbitrary length $k$ can be avoided for arbitrarily long cyclic permutations, in particular investigating the boundary cases of minimal unavoidable sets and maximal avoidable sets.

The Variance and the Asymptotic Distribution of the Length of Longest $k$-alternating Subsequences
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 25:1, Combinatorics (May 5, 2023) dmtcs:10296 • View Publication • BIB
We obtain an explicit formula for the variance of the number of $k$-peaks in a uniformly random permutation. This is then used to obtain an asymptotic formula for the variance of the length of longest $k$-alternating subsequence in random permutations. Also a central limit is proved for the latter statistic.

Structure of $k$-closures of finite nilpotent permutation groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a permutation group on a set $Ω$, and $k$ a positive integer. The $k$-closure $G^{(k)}$ of $G$ is the largest subgroup of $\operatorname{Sym}(Ω)$, with the same as $G$ orbits of componentwise action on $Ω^k$. We prove that the $k$-closure of a finite nilpotent permutation group is the direct product of $k$-closures of its Sylow subgroups.

Monotone subsets in lattices and the Schensted shape of a Sós permutation
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a fixed irrational number $α$ and $n\in \mathbb{N}$, we look at the shape of the sequence $(f(1),\ldots,f(n))$ after Schensted insertion, where $f(i) = αi \mod 1$. Our primary result is that the boundary of the Schensted shape is approximated by a piecewise linear function with at most two slopes. This piecewise linear function is explicitly described in terms of the continued fraction expansion for $α$. Our results generalize those of Boyd and Steele, who studied longest monotone subsequences. Our proofs are based on a careful analysis of monotone sets in two-dimensional lattices.
From Trees to Barcodes and Back Again II: Combinatorial and Probabilistic Aspects of a Topological Inverse Problem
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we consider two aspects of the inverse problem of how to construct merge trees realizing a given barcode. Much of our investigation exploits a recently discovered connection between the symmetric group and barcodes in general position, based on the simple observation that death order is a permutation of birth order. The first important outcome of our study is a clear combinatorial distinction between the space of phylogenetic trees (as defined by Billera, Holmes and Vogtmann) and the space of merge trees. Generic BHV trees on $n+1$ leaf nodes fall into $(2n-1)!!$ distinct strata, but the analogous number for merge trees is equal to the number of maximal chains in the lattice of partitions, i.e., $(n+1)!n!2^{-n}$. The second aspect of our study is the derivation of precise formulas for the distribution of tree realization numbers (the number of merge trees realizing a given barcode) when we assume that barcodes are sampled using a uniform distribution on the symmetric group. We are able to characterize some of the higher moments of this distribution, thanks in part to a reformulation in terms of Dirichlet convolution. This characterization provides a type of null hypothesis, apparently different from the distributions observed in real neuron data and opens the door to doing more precise science.

Griddings of permutations and hardness of pattern matching
We study the complexity of the decision problem known as Permutation Pattern Matching, or PPM. The input of PPM consists of a pair of permutations $τ$ (the `text') and $π$ (the `pattern'), and the goal is to decide whether $τ$ contains $π$ as a subpermutation. On general inputs, PPM is known to be NP-complete by a result of Bose, Buss and Lubiw. In this paper, we focus on restricted instances of PPM where the text is assumed to avoid a fixed (small) pattern $σ$; this restriction is known as Av($σ$)-PPM. It has been previously shown that Av($σ$)-PPM is polynomial for any $σ$ of size at most 3, while it is NP-hard for any $σ$ containing a monotone subsequence of length four. In this paper, we present a new hardness reduction which allows us to show, in a uniform way, that Av($σ$)-PPM is hard for every $σ$ of size at least 6, for every $σ$ of size 5 except the symmetry class of $41352$, as well as for every $σ$ symmetric to one of the three permutations $4321$, $4312$ and $4231$. Moreover, assuming the exponential time hypothesis, none of these hard cases of Av($σ$)-PPM can be solved in time $2^{o(n/\log n)}$. Previously, such conditional lower bound was not known even for the unconstrained PPM problem. On the tractability side, we combine the CSP approach of Guillemot and Marx with the structural results of Huczynska and Vatter to show that for any monotone-griddable permutation class C, PPM is polynomial when the text is restricted to a permutation from C.

Covering Symmetric Sets of the Boolean Cube by Affine Hyperplanes
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 29(2), 2022 • View Publication • BIB
Alon and Füredi (European J. Combin., 1993) proved that any family of hyperplanes that covers every point of the Boolean cube $\{0,1\}^n$ except one must contain at least $n$ hyperplanes. We obtain two extensions of this result, in characteristic zero, for hyperplane covers of symmetric sets of the Boolean cube (subsets that are closed under permutations of coordinates), as well as for `polynomial covers' of `weight-determined' sets of `strictly unimodal uniform' (SU$^2$) grids. As a main tool for solving our problems, we give a combinatorial characterization of (finite-degree) Zariski (Z-) closures of symmetric sets of the Boolean cube -- the Z-closure of a symmetric set is symmetric. In fact, we obtain a characterization that concerns, more generally, weight-determined sets of SU$^2$ grids. However, in this generality, our characterization is not of the Z-closures -- unlike over the Boolean cube, the Z-closure of a weight-determined set need not be weight-determined. We introduce a new closure operator exclusively for weight-determined sets -- the `(finite-degree) Z*-closure' -- defined to be the maximal weight-determined set in the Z-closure. (This coincides with the Z-closure over the Boolean cube, for symmetric sets.) We obtain a combinatorial characterization of the finite-degree Z*-closures of weight-determined sets of an SU$^2$ grid. This characterization may also be of independent interest. Indeed, as further applications, we (i) give an alternate proof of a lemma by Alon et al. (IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory, 1988), and (ii) characterize the `certifying degrees' of weight-determined sets. Over the Boolean cube, our above characterization can also be derived using a result of Bernasconi and Egidi (Inf. Comput., 1999). However, our proof is independent of this result, works for all SU$^2$ grids, and could be regarded as being more combinatorial.
On intersection density of transitive groups of degree a product of two odd primes
Published in Finite Fields and Their Applications, Volume 78, 2022 • View Publication • BIB
Two elements $g$ and $h$ of a permutation group $G$ acting on a set $V$ are said to be intersecting if $g(v) = h(v)$ for some $v \in V$. More generally, a subset ${\cal F}$ of $G$ is an intersecting set if every pair of elements of ${\cal F}$ is intersecting. The intersection density $ρ(G)$ of a transitive permutation group $G$ is the maximum value of the quotient $|{\cal F}|/|G_v|$ where $G_v$ is a stabilizer of $v\in V$ and ${\cal F}$ runs over all intersecting sets in $G$. Intersection densities of transitive groups of degree $pq$, where $p>q$ are odd primes, is considered. In particular, the conjecture that the intersection density of every such group is equal to $1$ (posed in [ J.~Combin. Theory, Ser. A 180 (2021), 105390]) is disproved by constructing a family of imprimitive permutation groups of degree $pq$ (with blocks of size $q$), where $p=(q^k-1)/(q-1)$, whose intersection density is equal to $q$. The construction depends heavily on certain equidistant cyclic codes $[p,k]_q$ over the field $\mathbb{F}_q$ whose codewords have Hamming weight strictly smaller than $p$.
