The critical group of a combinatorial map
Published • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by the appearance of embeddings in the theory of chip firing and the critical group of a graph, we introduce a version of the critical group (or sandpile group) for combinatorial maps, that is, for graphs embedded in orientable surfaces. We provide several definitions of our critical group, by approaching it through analogues of the cycle-cocycle matrix, the Laplacian matrix, and as the group of critical states of a chip firing game (or sandpile model) on the edges of a map. Our group can be regarded as a perturbation of the classical critical group of its underlying graph by topological information, and it agrees with the classical critical group in the plane case. Its cardinality is equal to the number of spanning quasi-trees in a connected map, just as the cardinality of the classical critical group is equal to the number of spanning trees of a connected graph. Our approach exploits the properties of principally unimodular matrices and the methods of delta-matroid theory.

Concatenation trees: A framework for efficient universal cycle and de Bruijn sequence constructions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Classic cycle-joining techniques have found widespread application in creating universal cycles for a diverse range of combinatorial objects, such as shorthand permutations, weak orders, orientable sequences, and various subsets of $k$-ary strings, including de Bruijn sequences. In the most favorable scenarios, these algorithms operate with a space complexity of $O(n)$ and require $O(n)$ time to generate each symbol in the sequences. In contrast, concatenation-based methods have been developed for a limited selection of universal cycles. In each of these instances, the universal cycles can be generated far more efficiently, with an amortized time complexity of $O(1)$ per symbol, while still using $O(n)$ space. This paper introduces $\mathit{concatenation~trees}$, which serve as the fundamental structures needed to bridge the gap between cycle-joining constructions based on the pure cycle register and corresponding concatenation-based approaches. They immediately demystify the relationship between the classic Lyndon word concatenation construction of de Bruijn sequences and a corresponding cycle-joining based construction. To underscore their significance, concatenation trees are applied to construct universal cycles for shorthand permutations and weak orders in $O(1)$-amortized time per symbol. Moreover, we provide insights as to how similar results can be obtained for other universal cycles including cut-down de Bruijn sequences and orientable sequences.

Abstract Orientable Incidence Structure and Algorithms for Finite Bounded Acyclic Categories. II. Data Structure and Fundamental Operations
A data structure for finite bounded acyclic categories has been built, which is useful to encode and manipulate abstract orientable incidence structure. It can be represented as a directed acyclic multigraph with weighted edges, where the weighs encode the algebraic structure between edges. The fundamental operations on this data structure are investigated from geometrical, categorical and programming perspectives.

Constructing generalized Heffter arrays via near alternating sign matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $S$ be a subset of a group $G$ (not necessarily abelian) such that $S\,\cap -S$ is empty or contains only elements of order $2$, and let $\mathbf{h}=(h_1,\ldots, h_m)\in \mathbb{N}^m$ and $\mathbf{k}=(k_1, \ldots, k_n)\in \mathbb{N}^n$. A generalized Heffter array GHA$^λ_S(m, n; \mathbf{h}, \mathbf{k})$ over $G$ is an $m\times n$ matrix $A=(a_{ij})$ such that: the $i$-th row (resp. $j$-th column) of $A$ contains exactly $h_i$ (resp. $k_j$) nonzero elements, and the list $\{a_{ij}, -a_{ij}\mid a_{ij}\neq 0\}$ equals $λ$ times the set $S\,\cup\, -S$. We speak of a zero sum (resp. nonzero sum) GHA if each row and each column of $A$ sums to zero (resp. a nonzero element), with respect to some ordering. In this paper, we use near alternating sign matrices to build both zero and nonzero sum GHAs, over cyclic groups, having the further strong property of being simple. In particular, we construct zero sum and simple GHAs whose row and column weights are congruent to $0$ modulo $4$. This result also provides the first infinite family of simple (classic) Heffter arrays to be rectangular ($m\neq n$) and with less than $n$ nonzero entries in each row. Furthermore, we build nonzero sum GHA$^λ_S(m, n; \mathbf{h}, \mathbf{k})$ over an arbitrary group $G$ whenever $S$ contains enough noninvolutions, thus extending previous nonconstructive results where $\pm S = G\setminus H$ for some subgroup $H$~of~$G$. Finally, we describe how GHAs can be used to build orthogonal decompositions and biembeddings of Cayley graphs (over groups not necessarily abelian) onto orientable surfaces.
Orienting undirected phylogenetic networks to tree-child network
Phylogenetic networks are used to represent the evolutionary history of species. They are versatile when compared to traditional phylogenetic trees, as they capture more complex evolutionary events such as hybridization and horizontal gene transfer. Distance-based methods such as the Neighbor-Net algorithm are widely used to compute phylogenetic networks from data. However, the output is necessarily an undirected graph, posing a great challenge to deduce the direction of genetic flow in order to infer the true evolutionary history. Recently, Huber et al. investigated two different computational problems relevant to orienting undirected phylogenetic networks into directed ones. In this paper, we consider the problem of orienting an undirected binary network into a tree-child network. We give some necessary conditions for determining the tree-child orientability, such as a tight upper bound on the size of tree-child orientable graphs, as well as many interesting examples. In addition, we introduce new families of undirected phylogenetic networks, the jellyfish graphs and ladder graphs, that are orientable but not tree-child orientable. We also prove that any ladder graph can be made tree-child orientable by adding extra leaves, and describe a simple algorithm for orienting a ladder graph to a tree-child network with the minimum number of extra leaves. We pose many open problems as well.
Embedded graph 3-coloring and flows
A graph drawn in a surface is a near-quadrangulation if the sum of the lengths of the faces different from 4-faces is bounded by a fixed constant. We leverage duality between colorings and flows to design an efficient algorithm for 3-precoloring-extension in near-quadrangulations of orientable surfaces. Furthermore, we use this duality to strengthen previously known sufficient conditions for 3-colorability of triangle-free graphs drawn in orientable surfaces.

Abstract Orientable Incidence Structure and Algorithms for Finite Bounded Acyclic Categories. I. Incidence Structure
A generalization of incidence relations in abstract polytope has been explored, and parameterized surfaces are used as primers. The abstract orientable incidence structure is defined as an algebraic model of incidence relations, in which some algebraic properties in abtract polytope theory are generalized. The geometric interpretation of abstract orientable incidence structure are also discussed. The orientable incidence structure in a semi-regular normal CW complex are briefly investigated.

Regular maps with primitive automorphism groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
We classify the regular maps $\mathcal M$ which have automorphism groups $G$ acting faithfully and primitively on their vertices. As a permutation group $G$ must be of almost simple or affine type, with dihedral point stabilisers. We show that all such almost simple groups, namely all but a few groups ${\rm PSL}_2(q)$, ${\rm PGL}_2(q)$ and ${\rm Sz}(q)$, arise from regular maps, which are always non-orientable. In the affine case, the maps $\mathcal M$ occur in orientable and non-orientable Petrie dual pairs. We give the number of maps associated with each group, together with their genus and extended type. Some of this builds on earlier work of the first author on generalised Paley maps, and on recent work of Jajcay, Li, \vSirá\vn and Wang on maps with quasiprimitive automorphism groups. There are tables of data for the maps in appendices to this paper.

Tight complexes are Golod
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Golodness of a simplicial complex is defined algebraically in terms of the Stanley-Reisner ring, and it has been a long-standing problem to find its combinatorial characterization. The tightness of a simplicial complex is a combinatorial analogue of a tight embedding of a manifold into the Euclidean space, and has been studied in connection to minimal manifold triangulations. In this paper, we prove that tight complexes are Golod, and as a corollary, we obtain that for triangulations of closed connected orientable manifolds, the Golodness and the tightness are equivalent.

Index 3 biembeddings of the complete graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that the complete graphs on $24s+21$ vertices have decompositions into two edge-disjoint subgraphs, each of which triangulates an orientable surface. The special case where the two surfaces are homeomorphic solves a generalized Earth-Moon problem for that surface. Unlike previous constructions, these pairs of triangular embeddings are derived from index 3 current graphs.
Irreducibility of the Tutte polynomial of an embedded graph
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 5 (2022) no. 6, pp. 1337-1351 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the ribbon graph polynomial of a graph embedded in an orientable surface is irreducible if and only if the embedded graph is neither the disjoint union nor the join of embedded graphs. This result is analogous to the fact that the Tutte polynomial of a graph is irreducible if and only if the graph is connected and non-separable.

Genus Polynomials of Cubic Graphs with Non-Real Roots
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a graph $G$, its genus polynomial is $Γ_G(x) = \sum_{k\geq 0} g_k(G)x^k$, where $g_k(G)$ is the number of 2-cell embeddings of $G$ in an orientable surface of genus $k$. The Log-Concavity Genus Distribution (LCGD) Conjecture states that the genus polynomial of every graph is log-concave. It was further conjectured by Stahl that the genus polynomial of every graph has only real roots, however this was later disproved. We identify several examples of cubic graphs whose genus polynomials, in addition to having at least one non-real root, have a quadratic factor that is non-log-concave when factored over the real numbers.

A class of highly symmetric Archdeacon embeddings
Archdeacon, in his seminal paper $[1]$, defined the concept of Heffter array to provide explicit constructions of biembeddings of the complete graph $K_v$ into orientable surfaces, the so-called Archdeacon embeddings, and proved that these embeddings are $\mathbb{Z}_{v}$-regular. In this paper, we show that an Archdeacon embedding may admit an automorphism group that is strictly larger than $\mathbb{Z}_{v}$. Indeed, as an application of the interesting class of arrays recently introduced by Buratti in $[2]$, we exhibit, for infinitely many values of $v$, an embedding of this type having full automorphism group of size ${v \choose 2}$ that is the largest possible one.

Perfect state transfer in quantum walks on orientable maps
Published • View Publication • BIB
A discrete-time quantum walk is the quantum analogue of a Markov chain on a graph. Zhan [J. Algebraic Combin. 53(4):1187-1213, 2020] proposes a model of discrete-time quantum walk whose transition matrix is given by two reflections, using the face and vertex incidence relations of a graph embedded in an orientable surface. We show that the evolution of a general discrete-time quantum walk that consists of two reflections satisfies a Chebyshev recurrence, under a projection. For the vertex-face walk, we prove theorems about perfect state transfer and periodicity and give infinite families of examples where these occur. We bring together tools from algebraic and topological graph theory to analyze the evolution of this walk.
Orientable domination in product-like graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The orientable domination number, ${\rm DOM}(G)$, of a graph $G$ is the largest domination number over all orientations of $G$. In this paper, ${\rm DOM}$ is studied on different product graphs and related graph operations. The orientable domination number of arbitrary corona products is determined, while sharp lower and upper bounds are proved for Cartesian and lexicographic products. A result of Chartrand et al. from 1996 is extended by establishing the values of ${\rm DOM}(K_{n_1,n_2,n_3})$ for arbitrary positive integers $n_1,n_2$ and $n_3$. While considering the orientable domination number of lexicographic product graphs, we answer in the negative a question concerning domination and packing numbers in acyclic digraphs posed in [Domination in digraphs and their direct and Cartesian products, J. Graph Theory 99 (2022) 359-377].
Random Embeddings of Graphs: The Expected Number of Faces in Most Graphs is Logarithmic
Published in Proceedings: ACM-SIAM Symposium on Discrete Algorithms, SODA 2024 • View Publication • BIB
A random 2-cell embedding of a connected graph $G$ in some orientable surface is obtained by choosing a random local rotation around each vertex. Under this setup, the number of faces or the genus of the corresponding 2-cell embedding becomes a random variable. Random embeddings of two particular graph classes, those of a bouquet of $n$ loops and those of $n$ parallel edges connecting two vertices, have been extensively studied and are well-understood. However, little is known about more general graphs. The results of this paper explain why Monte Carlo methods cannot work for approximating the minimum genus of graphs. In his breakthrough work [Permutation-partition pairs, JCTB 1991], Stahl developed the foundation of "random topological graph theory". Most of his results have been unsurpassed until today. In our work, we analyze the expected number of faces of random embeddings (equivalently, the average genus) of a graph $G$. It was very recently shown that for any graph $G$, the expected number of faces is at most linear. We show that the actual expected number of faces $F(G)$ is almost always much smaller. In particular, we prove: 1) $\frac{1}{2}\ln n - 2 < \mathbb{E}[F(K_n)] \le 3.65 \ln n +o(1)$. 2) For random graphs $G(n,p)$ ($p=p(n)$), we have $\mathbb{E}[F(G(n,p))] \le \ln^2 n+\frac{1}{p}$. 3) For random models $B(n,Δ)$ containing only graphs, whose maximum degree is at most $Δ$, we obtain stronger bounds by showing that the expected number of faces is $Θ(\log n)$.
A unified Erdős-Pósa theorem for cycles in graphs labelled by multiple abelian groups
Published in Math. Ann., 393:2507-2559, October 2025 • View Publication • BIB
In 1965, Erdős and Pósa proved that there is an (approximate) duality between the maximum size of a packing of cycles and the minimum size of a vertex set hitting all cycles. Such a duality does not hold for odd cycles, and Dejter and Neumann-Lara asked in 1988 to find all pairs ${(\ell, z)}$ of integers where such a duality holds for the family of cycles of length $\ell$ modulo $z$. We characterise all such pairs, and we further generalise this characterisation to cycles in graphs labelled with a bounded number of abelian groups, whose values avoid a bounded number of elements of each group. This unifies almost all known types of cycles that admit such a duality, and it also provides new results. Moreover, we characterise the obstructions to such a duality in this setting, and thereby obtain an analogous characterisation for cycles in graphs embeddable on a fixed compact orientable surface.

Existence of $λ$-Fold Non-zero sum Heffter arrays through local considerations
In [12] was introduced, for cyclic groups, the class of partially filled arrays of the non-zero sum Heffter array that are, as the Heffter arrays, related to difference families, graph decompositions, and biembeddings. Here we generalize this definition to any finite groups. Given a subgroup $J$ of order $t$ of a group $G$, a $λ$-fold non-zero sum Heffter array over $G$ relative to $J$, $^λ\mathrm{N}\mathrm{H}_t(m,n; h,k)$, is an $m \times n$ p. f. array with entries in $G$ such that: each row contains $h$ filled cells and each column contains $k$ filled cells; for every $x\in G\setminus J$, the sum of the occurrence of $x$ and $-x$ is $λ$; the sum of the elements in every row and column is, following the natural orderings from left to right for the rows and from top to bottom for the columns, different from $0$ (in $G$). In [12], there was presented a complete, probabilistic, solution for the existence problem in case $λ=1$ and $G=\mathbb{Z}_v$ that is the starting point of this investigation. In this paper, we will consider the existence problem for a generic value of $λ$ and a generic finite group $G$, and we present an almost complete solution to this problem. In particular, we will prove, through local considerations (inspired by Lovász Local Lemma), that there exists a $λ$-fold non-zero sum Heffter array over $G$ relative to $J$ whenever the trivial necessary conditions are satisfied and $|G|=v\geq 41$. This value can be turned down to $29$ in case the array does not contain empty cells. Finally, we will show that these arrays give rise to biembeddings of multigraphs into orientable surfaces and we provide new infinite families of such embeddings.

The genus distribution of cubic graphs and asymptotic number of rooted cubic maps with high genus
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $C_{n,g}$ be the number of rooted cubic maps with $2n$ vertices on the orientable surface of genus $g$. We show that the sequence $(C_{n,g}:g\ge 0)$ is asymptotically normal with mean and variance asymptotic to $(1/2)(n-\ln n)$ and $(1/4)\ln n$, respectively. We derive an asymptotic expression for $C_{n,g}$ when $(n-2g)/\ln n$ lies in any closed subinterval of $(0,2)$. Using rotation systems and Bender's theorem about generating functions with fast-growing coefficients, we derive simple asymptotic expressions for the numbers of rooted regular maps, disregarding the genus. In particular, we show that the number of rooted cubic maps with $2n$ vertices, disregarding the genus, is asymptotic to $\frac{3}π\,n!6^n$.

Zonotopal algebras, orbit harmonics, and Donaldson-Thomas invariants of symmetric quivers
Published • View Publication • BIB
We apply the method of orbit harmonics to the set of break divisors and orientable divisors on graphs to obtain the central and external zonotopal algebras respectively. We then relate a construction of Efimov in the context of cohomological Hall algebras to the central zonotopal algebra of a graph $G_{Q,γ}$ constructed from a symmetric quiver $Q$ with enough loops and a dimension vector $γ$. This provides a concrete combinatorial perspective on the former work, allowing us to identify the quantum Donaldson-Thomas invariants as the Hilbert series of the space of $S_γ$-invariants of the Postnikov-Shapiro slim subgraph space attached to $G_{Q,γ}$. The connection with orbit harmonics in turn allows us to give a manifestly nonnegative combinatorial interpretation to numerical Donaldson-Thomas invariants as the number of $S_γ$-orbits under the permutation action on the set of break divisors on $G_{Q,γ}$. We conclude with several representation-theoretic consequences, whose combinatorial ramifications may be of independent interest.
