Chromatic characters and root multiplicities for Borcherds--Kac--Moody algebras
The main aim of this article is to obtain explicit formulas for the root multiplicities of a class of finite-rank symmetrizable Borcherds-Kac-Moody algebras g(A) whose real part is of type A. The Dynkin diagram of each such algebra is obtained from the disjoint union of a Dynkin diagram of type A and a finite simple graph G_im, whose vertices correspond to imaginary simple roots, by choosing one vertex in each and joining the chosen vertices by a single edge of multiplicity c>0. More generally, we consider the same construction with the type A diagram replaced by the Dynkin diagram of an arbitrary finite-rank symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebra g_re. The resulting symmetrizable Borcherds-Kac-Moody algebra g(A) has real part g_re and imaginary part represented by G_im. Our starting point is a graph-theoretic description of the quotient of the denominator products of g(A) and g_re. This quotient is a multivariate independence polynomial of G_im, with the variable corresponding to the attachment vertex weighted by normalized highest-weight characters of g_re. We prove that the coefficients of powers of this quotient factor into a generalized chromatic polynomial and a tensor-power weight multiplicity. Using this, we obtain explicit formulas for all root multiplicities with nonzero imaginary component in terms of generalized chromatic polynomials of G_im and weight multiplicities in tensor products of highest-weight modules of g_re. When G_im is chordal, these formulas specialize to finite divisor sums involving products of binomial coefficients; paths and complete graphs provide particular examples. In particular, we obtain explicit formulas for the root multiplicities of g(A) when its real part g_re is of type A.

Multivariate growth series of graph products of groups
Right-angled Artin groups (RAAGs) and right-angled Coxeter groups (RACGs) associated with finite simple graphs are fundamental objects in geometric group theory. Their one-variable growth series with respect to the standard generating sets was classically expressed by Chiswell in terms of the one-variable independence polynomial of the defining graph [2] with suitable substitutions of the variable. In this paper, we investigate the multivariate growth series of graph products of groups and derive explicit formulas in terms of the multivariate independence polynomial of the underlying graph through suitable substitutions of variables. As special cases, we obtain multivariate growth series formulas for RAAGs and RACGs, thereby extending the classical one-variable identities. We further show that the coefficients of the multivariate growth series of RAAGs and RACGs admit explicit descriptions in terms of the double-marked and marked chromatic polynomials of graphs. This connection reveals a rich interplay between growth series and graph coloring invariants. In particular, we obtain completely explicit formulas for all the coefficients in the case of chordal graphs, which include, for example, trees and complete graphs.

Lower bounds for multivariate independence polynomials and their generalisations
In statistical physics, the multivariate hard-core model describes a system of particles, each of which receives its own fugacity. In graph-theoretic language, the partition function of the model translates to the multivariate independence polynomial, i.e., the multiaffine generalisation of the independence polynomial, defined by $Z_G(λ_1,\dots,λ_n) := \sum_{I\in\mathcal{I}(G)} \prod_{v\in I}λ_v$, where $\mathcal{I}(G)$ denotes the set of all independent sets in a graph $G$ on $[n]:=\{1,2,\dots,n\}$. We prove that for every simple graph $G$ on $[n]$ and $λ_1,\dots,λ_n\geq 0$, \[ Z_G(λ_1,\dots,λ_n) \geq \prod_{i=1}^n (1+(d_i+1)λ_i)^{1/(d_i+1)}, \] where $d_1,\dots,d_n$ is the degree sequence of $G$. This generalises a result of Sah, Sawhney, Stoner, and Zhao, who proved the univariate case $λ_1=\dots=λ_n=λ$. We further conjecture that our inequality should generalise to other antiferromagnetic models and give some evidence in support of it. In particular, for $λ_i,μ_i\geq 0$, $1\leq i\leq n$, we obtain a stronger inequality \[ \sum_{\substack{I,J\in \mathcal{I}(G) \\ I\cap J=\emptyset}} \prod_{v\in I}λ_v\prod_{u\in J}μ_u \geq \prod_{i=1}^n \left(1+(d_i+1)(λ_i+μ_i)+d_i(d_i+1)λ_iμ_i\right)^{1/(d_i+1)}, \] which proves our conjecture for a multiaffine generalisation of the semiproper colouring partition function with two proper colours. Our key technical steps for both theorems are obtained by using a custom mathematical research agent built on top of Gemini Deep Think, which can be seen as a benchmark demonstrating that the current state-of-the-art language models can, in part, assist with mathematical research.

Zero-free regions for the independence polynomial on restricted graph classes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Generalising the Heilman-Lieb Theorem from statistical physics, Chudnovsky and Seymour [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B, 97(3):350--357] showed that the univariate independence polynomial of any claw-free graph has all of its zeros on the negative real line. In this paper, we show that for any fixed subdivded claw $H$ and any $Δ$, there is an open set $F \subseteq \mathbb{C}$ containing $[0, \infty)$ such that the independence polynomial of any $H$-free graph of maximum degree $Δ$ has all of its zeros outside of $F$. We also show that no such result can hold when $H$ is any graph other than a subdivided claw or if we drop the maximum degree condition. We also establish zero-free regions for the multivariate independence polynomial of $H$-free graphs of bounded degree when $H$ is a subdivided claw. The statements of these results are more subtle, but are again best possible in various senses.

Lorentzian polynomials and the independence sequences of graphs
Published in Bull. London Math. Soc. 57 (2025), 1305-1323 • View Publication • BIB
We study the multivariate independence polynomials of graphs and the log-concavity of the coefficients of their univariate restrictions. Let $R_{W_4}$ be the operator defined on simple and undirected graphs which replaces each edge with a caterpillar of size $4$. We prove that all graphs in the image of $R_{W_4}$ are what we call pre-Lorentzian, that is, their multivariate independence polynomial becomes Lorentzian after appropriate manipulations. In particular, as pre-Lorentzian graphs have log-concave (and therefore unimodal) independence sequences, our result makes progress on a conjecture of Alavi, Malde, Schwenk and Erdős which asks if the independence sequence of trees or forests is unimodal.

Independence Polynomials and Hypergeometric Series
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $Γ$ be a simple graph and $I_Γ(x)$ its multivariate independence polynomial. The main result of this paper is the characterization of chordal graphs as the only $Γ$ for which the power series expansion of $I_Γ^{-1}(x)$ is Horn hypergeometric.

Generalizations of the Matching Polynomial to the Multivariate Independence Polynomial
Published • View Publication • BIB
We generalize two main theorems of matching polynomials of undirected simple graphs, namely, real-rootedness and the Heilmann-Lieb root bound. Viewing the matching polynomial of a graph $G$ as the independence polynomial of the line graph of $G$, we determine conditions for the extension of these theorems to the independence polynomial of any graph. In particular, we show that a stability-like property of the multivariate independence polynomial characterizes claw-freeness. Finally, we give and extend multivariate versions of Godsil's theorems on the divisibility of matching polynomials of trees related to $G$.
Computing the Independence Polynomial: from the Tree Threshold down to the Roots
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study an algorithm for approximating the multivariate independence polynomial $Z(\mathbf{z})$, with negative and complex arguments, an object that has strong connections to combinatorics and to statistical physics. In particular, the independence polynomial with negative arguments, $Z(-\mathbf{p})$, determines the Shearer region, the maximal region of probabilities to which the Lovasz Local Lemma (LLL) can be extended (Shearer 1985). In statistical physics, complex zeros of the independence polynomial relate to existence of phase transitions. Our main result is a deterministic algorithm to compute approximately the independence polynomial in any root-free complex polydisc centered at the origin. Our algorithm is essentially the same as Weitz's algorithm for positive parameters up to the tree uniqueness threshold, and the core of our analysis is a novel multivariate form of the correlation decay technique, which can handle non-uniform complex parameters. In particular, in the univariate real setting our work implies that Weitz's algorithm works in an interval between two critical points $(λ'_c(d), λ_c(d))$, and outside of this interval an approximation of $Z(\mathbf{z})$ is known to be NP-hard. As an application, we give a sub-exponential time algorithm for testing approximate membership in the Shearer region. We also give a new rounding based deterministic algorithm for Shearer's lemma (an extension of the LLL), which, however, runs in sub-exponential time. On the hardness side, we prove that evaluating $Z(\mathbf{z})$ at an arbitrary point in Shearer's region, and testing membership in Shearer's region, are #P-hard problems. We also establish the best possible dependence of the exponent of the run time of Weitz's correlation decay technique in the negative regime on the distance to the boundary of the Shearer region.
