An Improved Upper Bound for the Bilu-Linial Conjecture via Interlacing Families
The Bilu-Linial conjecture asserts that every $d$-regular graph admits a signing $σ$ such that the spectral radius of the signed adjacency matrix $A_σ$ satisfies $ρ(A_σ)\le 2\sqrt{d-1}$. Bilu and Linial also proved the weaker bound $O(\sqrt{d\log^3 d})$ for graphs of maximum degree $d$. Marcus, Spielman, and Srivastava confirmed the conjecture in the case of $d$-regular bipartite graphs. In this paper, we prove that every graph of maximum degree $d$ has a signing $σ$ such that $$ρ(A_σ)\le 2\sqrt{3(d-1)}.$$ This removes the polylogarithmic factor from the estimate of Bilu and Linial and gives an explicit $2\sqrt{3(d-1)}$ two-sided spectral bound. The proof builds on the method of interlacing polynomials introduced by Marcus, Spielman, and Srivastava, together with results on mixed characteristic polynomials established by Marcus, Spielman, and Srivastava and by Bownik.

Improved bounds in Weaver's ${\rm KS}_r$ conjecture for high rank positive semidefinite matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recently Marcus, Spielman and Srivastava proved Weaver's ${\rm{KS}}_r$ conjecture, which gives a positive solution to the Kadison-Singer problem. Cohen and Brändén independently extended this result to obtain the arbitrary-rank version of Weaver's ${\rm{KS}}_r$ conjecture. In this paper, we present a new bound in Weaver's ${\rm{KS}}_r$ conjecture for the arbitrary-rank case. To do that, we introduce the definition of $(k,m)$-characteristic polynomials and employ it to improve the previous estimate on the largest root of the mixed characteristic polynomials. For the rank-one case, our bound agrees with the Bownik-Casazza-Marcus-Speegle's bound when $r=2$ and with the Ravichandran-Leake's bound when $r>2$. For the higher-rank case, we sharpen the previous bounds from Cohen and from Brändén .

Stability and complexity of mixed discriminants
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that the mixed discriminant of $n$ positive semidefinite $n \times n$ real symmetric matrices can be approximated within a relative error $ε>0$ in quasi-polynomial $n^{O(\ln n -\ln ε)}$ time, provided the distance of each matrix to the identity matrix in the operator norm does not exceed some absolute constant $γ_0 >0$. We deduce a similar result for the mixed discriminant of doubly stochastic $n$-tuples of matrices from the Marcus - Spielman - Srivastava bound on the roots of the mixed characteristic polynomial. Finally, we construct a quasi-polynomial algorithm for approximating the sum of $m$-th powers of principal minors of a matrix, provided the operator norm of the matrix is strictly less than 1. As is shown by Gurvits, for $m=2$ the problem is $\#P$-hard and covers the problem of computing the mixed discriminant of positive semidefinite matrices of rank 2.

An analytical Lieb-Sokal lemma
A polynomial $p \in \mathbb{R}[z_1, \cdots, z_n]$ is called real stable if it is non-vanishing whenever all the variables take values in the upper half plane. A well known result of Elliott Lieb and Alan Sokal states that if $p$ and $q$ are $n$ variate real stable polynomials, then the polynomial $q(\partial)p := q(\partial_1, \cdots, \partial_n)p$, is real stable as well. In this paper, we prove analytical estimates on the locations on the zeroes of the real stable polynomial $q(\partial)p$ in the case when both $p$ and $q$ are multiaffine, an important special case, owing to connections to negative dependance in discrete probability. As an application, we prove a general estimate on the expected characteristic polynomials upon sampling from Strongly Rayleigh distributions. We then use this to deduce results concerning two classes of polynomials, mixed characteristic polynomials and mixed determinantal polynomials, that are related to the Kadison-Singer problem.
Ramanujan Graphs and the Solution of the Kadison-Singer Problem
We survey the techniques used in our recent resolution of the Kadison-Singer problem and proof of existence of Ramanujan Graphs of every degree: mixed characteristic polynomials and the method of interlacing families of polynomials. To demonstrate the method of interlacing families of polynomials, we give a simple proof of Bourgain and Tzafriri's restricted invertibility principle in the isotropic case.

Interlacing Families II: Mixed Characteristic Polynomials and the Kadison-Singer Problem
Published • View Publication • BIB
We use the method of interlacing families of polynomials introduced to prove two theorems known to imply a positive solution to the Kadison--Singer problem. The first is Weaver's conjecture $KS_{2}$ \cite{weaver}, which is known to imply Kadison--Singer via a projection paving conjecture of Akemann and Anderson. The second is a formulation due to Casazza, et al., of Anderson's original paving conjecture(s), for which we are able to compute explicit paving bounds. The proof involves an analysis of the largest roots of a family of polynomials that we call the "mixed characteristic polynomials" of a collection of matrices.
