Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein path ideals of trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $R=k[x_{1},\ldots,x_{n}]$, where $k$ is a field. The path ideal (of length $t\geq 2$) of a directed graph $G$ is the monomial ideal, denoted by $I_{t}(G)$, whose generators correspond to the directed paths of length $t$ in $G$. Let $Γ$ be a directed rooted tree. We characterize all such trees whose path ideals are unmixed and Cohen-Macaulay. Moreover, we show that $R/I_{t}(Γ)$ is Gorenstein if and only if the Stanley-Reisner simplicial complex of $I_{t}(Γ)$ is a matroid.

On the structure of dense triangle-free binary matroids
We prove, by means of an exact structural description, that every simple triangle-free binary matroid $M$ with $|M| > \tfrac{33}{128}2^{r(M)}$ has critical number at most $2$.

The extremal functions of classes of matroids of bounded branch-width
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a set of matroids $\mathcal{M}$, let $ex_\mathcal{M}(n)$ be the maximum size of a simple rank-$n$ matroid in $\mathcal{M}$. We prove that, for any finite field $\mathbb{F}$, if $\mathcal{M}$ is a minor-closed class of $\mathbb{F}$-representable matroids of bounded branch-width, then $\lim_{n \rightarrow \infty} ex_\mathcal{M}(n) / n$ exists and is a rational number, $Δ$. We also show that $ex_\mathcal{M}(n) - Δn$ is periodic when $n$ is sufficiently large and that $ex_\mathcal{M}$ is achieved by a subclass of $\mathcal{M}$ of bounded path-width.

Sign variation, the Grassmannian, and total positivity
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 145 (2017), 308-339 • View Publication • BIB
The totally nonnegative Grassmannian is the set of k-dimensional subspaces V of R^n whose nonzero Pluecker coordinates all have the same sign. Gantmakher and Krein (1950) and Schoenberg and Whitney (1951) independently showed that V is totally nonnegative iff every vector in V, when viewed as a sequence of n numbers and ignoring any zeros, changes sign at most k-1 times. We generalize this result from the totally nonnegative Grassmannian to the entire Grassmannian, showing that if V is generic (i.e. has no zero Pluecker coordinates), then the vectors in V change sign at most m times iff certain sequences of Pluecker coordinates of V change sign at most m-k+1 times. We also give an algorithm which, given a non-generic V whose vectors change sign at most m times, perturbs V into a generic subspace whose vectors also change sign at most m times. We deduce that among all V whose vectors change sign at most m times, the generic subspaces are dense. These results generalize to oriented matroids. As an application of our results, we characterize when a generalized amplituhedron construction, in the sense of Arkani-Hamed and Trnka (2013), is well defined. We also give two ways of obtaining the positroid cell of each V in the totally nonnegative Grassmannian from the sign patterns of vectors in V.

Higher resonance varieties of matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present some new results about the resonance varieties of matroids and hyperplane arrangements. Though these have been the objects of ongoing study, most work so far has focussed on cohomological degree 1. We show that certain phenomena become apparent only by considering all degrees at once.

Isotropic matroids I: Multimatroids and neighborhoods
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 23 (2016) #P4.1 • View Publication • BIB
Several properties of the isotropic matroid of a looped simple graph are presented. Results include a characterization of the multimatroids that are associated with isotropic matroids and several ways in which the isotropic matroid of G incorporates information about graphs locally equivalent to G. Specific results of the latter type include a characterization of graphs that are locally equivalent to bipartite graphs, a direct proof that two forests are isomorphic if and only if their isotropic matroids are isomorphic, and a way to express local equivalence indirectly, using only edge pivots.

Cryptomorphisms for abstract rigidity matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
This note contributes to the structure theory of abstract rigidity matroids in general dimension. In the spirit of classical matroid theory, we prove several cryptomorphic characterizations of abstract rigidity matroids (in terms of circuits, cocircuits, bases, hyperplanes). Moreover, the study of hyperplanes in abstract rigidity matroids leads us to state (and support with significant evidence) a conjecture about characterizing the class of abstract rigidity matroids by means of certain "prescribed substructures". We then prove a recursive version of this conjecture.

On excluded minors of connectivity 2 for the class of frame matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the set of excluded minors of connectivity 2 for the class of frame matroids. We exhibit a list $\mathcal{E}$ of 18 such matroids, and show that if $N$ is such an excluded minor, then either $N \in \mathcal{E}$ or $N$ is a 2-sum of $U_{2,4}$ and a 3-connected non-binary frame matroid.

Betti numbers of skeletons
We demonstrate that the Betti numbers associated to an N-graded minimal free resolution of the Stanley-Reisner ring of the (d-1)-skeleton of a simplicial complex of dimension d can be expressed as a Z-linear combination of the corresponding Betti numbers of the complex itself. An immediate implication of our main result is that the projective dimension of the Stanley-Reisner ring of the (d-1)-skeleton is at most one greater than the projective dimension of the Stanley-Reisner ring of the original complex, and it thus provides a new and direct proof of this. Our result extends immediately to matroids and their truncations. A similar result for matroid elongations can not be hoped for, but we do obtain a weaker result for these.
Subgraph Polytopes and Independence Polytopes of Count Matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given an undirected graph, the non-empty subgraph polytope is the convex hull of the characteristic vectors of pairs (F, S) where S is a non-empty subset of nodes and F is a subset of the edges with both endnodes in S. We obtain a strong relationship between the non-empty subgraph polytope and the spanning forest polytope. We further show that these polytopes provide polynomial size extended formulations for independence polytopes of count matroids, which generalizes recent results obtained by Iwata et al. referring to sparsity matroids. As a byproduct, we obtain new lower bounds on the extension complexity of the spanning forest polytope in terms of extension complexities of independence polytopes of these matroids.

A Method to construct the Sparse-paving Matroids over a Finite Set
In this work we present an algorithm to construct sparse-paving matroids over finite set $S$. From this algorithm we derive some useful bounds on the cardinality of the set of circuits of any Sparse-Paving matroids which allow us to prove in a simple way an asymptotic relation between the class of Sparse-paving matroids and the whole class of matroids. Additionally we introduce a matrix based method which render an explicit partition of the $r$-subsets of $S$, $\binom{S}{r}=\sqcup_{i=1}^{γ}\mathcal{U}_{i}$ such that each $\mathcal{U}_{i}$ defines a sparse-paving matroid of rank $r$.
Non-Planar On-Shell Diagrams
Published • View Publication • BIB
We initiate a systematic study of non-planar on-shell diagrams in N=4 SYM and develop powerful technology for doing so. We introduce canonical variables generalizing face variables, which make the dlog form of the on-shell form explicit. We make significant progress towards a general classification of arbitrary on-shell diagrams by means of two classes of combinatorial objects: generalized matching and matroid polytopes. We propose a boundary measurement that connects general on-shell diagrams to the Grassmannian. Our proposal exhibits two important and non-trivial properties: positivity in the planar case and it matches the combinatorial description of the diagrams in terms of generalized matroid polytopes. Interestingly, non-planar diagrams exhibit novel phenomena, such as the emergence of constraints on Plucker coordinates beyond Plucker relations when deleting edges, which are neatly captured by the generalized matching and matroid polytopes. This behavior is tied to the existence of a new type of poles in the on-shell form at which combinations of Plucker coordinates vanish. Finally, we introduce a prescription, applicable beyond the MHV case, for writing the on-shell form as a function of minors directly from the graph.

Catalan matroid decompositions of certain positroids
A positroid is the matroid of a matrix whose maximal minors are all nonnegative. Given a permutation $w$ in $S_n$, the matroid of a generic $n \times n$ matrix whose non-zero entries in row $i$ lie in columns $w(i)$ through $n+i$ is an example of a positroid. We enumerate the bases of such a positroid as a sum of certain products of Catalan numbers, each term indexed by the $123$-avoiding permutations above $w$ in Bruhat order. We also give a similar sum formula for their Tutte polynomials. These are both avatars of a structural result writing such a positroid as a disjoint union of matroids, each isomorphic to a direct sum of Catalan matroids and a matroid with one basis.
When Does an Ensemble of Matrices with Randomly Scaled Rows Lose Rank?
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the problem of determining rank loss conditions for a concatenation of full-rank matrices, such that each row of the composing matrices is scaled by a random coefficient. This problem has applications in wireless interference management and recommendation systems. We determine necessary and sufficient conditions for the design of each matrix, such that the random ensemble will almost surely lose rank by a certain amount. The result is proved by converting the problem to determining rank loss conditions for the union of some specific matroids, and then using tools from matroid and graph theories to derive the necessary and sufficient conditions. As an application, we discuss how this result can be applied to the problem of topological interference management, and characterize the linear symmetric degrees of freedom for a class of network topologies.
First order convergence of matroids
The model theory based notion of the first order convergence unifies the notions of the left-convergence for dense structures and the Benjamini-Schramm convergence for sparse structures. It is known that every first order convergent sequence of graphs with bounded tree-depth can be represented by an analytic limit object called a limit modeling. We establish the matroid counterpart of this result: every first order convergent sequence of matroids with bounded branch-depth representable over a fixed finite field has a limit modeling, i.e., there exists an infinite matroid with the elements forming a probability space that has asymptotically the same first order properties. We show that neither of the bounded branch-depth assumption nor the representability assumption can be removed.

Lattice 3-polytopes with six lattice points
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 30(2) (2016) , 687-717 • View Publication • BIB
We classify lattice $3$-polytopes of width larger than one and with exactly $6$ lattice points. We show that there are $74$ polytopes of width $2$, two polytopes of width $3$, and none of larger width. We give explicit coordinates for representatives of each class, together with other invariants such as their oriented matroid (or order type) and volume vector. For example, according to the number of interior points these $76$ polytopes divide into $23$ tetrahedra with two interior points (clean tetrahedra), $49$ polytopes with one interior point (the $49$ canonical three-polytopes with five boundary points previously classified by Kasprzyk) and only $4$ hollow polytopes. We also give a complete classification of three-polytopes of width one with $6$ lattice points. In terms of the oriented matroid of these six points, they lie in eight infinite classes and twelve individual polytopes. Our motivation comes partly from the concept of distinct pair sum (or dps) polytopes, which, in dimension $3$, can have at most $8$ lattice points. Among the $74+2$ classes mentioned above, exactly $44 + 1$ are dps.

Towards a splitter theorem for internally 4-connected binary matroids VIII: small matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
Our splitter theorem for internally 4-connected binary matroids studies pairs of the form (M,N), where N and M are internally 4-connected binary matroids, M has a proper N-minor, and if M' is an internally 4-connected matroid such that M has a proper M'-minor and M' has an N-minor, then |E(M)|-|E(M')|>3. The analysis in the splitter theorem requires the constraint that |E(M)|>15. In this article, we complement that analysis by using an exhaustive computer search to find all such pairs satisfying |E(M)|<16.
