On the relation between hyperrings and fuzzy rings
Published • View Publication • BIB
We construct a full embedding of the category of hyperfields into Dress's category of fuzzy rings and explicitly characterize the essential image --- it fails to be essentially surjective in a very minor way. This embedding provides an identification of Baker's theory of matroids over hyperfields with Dress's theory of matroids over fuzzy rings (provided one restricts to those fuzzy rings in the essential image). The embedding functor extends from hyperfields to hyperrings, and we study this extension in detail. We also analyze the relation between hyperfields and Baker's partial demifields.

A Tverberg type theorem for matroids
Let b(M) denote the maximal number of disjoint bases in a matroid M. It is shown that if M is a matroid of rank d+1, then for any continuous map f from the matroidal complex M into the d-dimensional Euclidean space there exist t \geq \sqrt{b(M)}/4 disjoint independent sets σ_1,\ldots,σ_t \in M such that \bigcap_{i=1}^t f(σ_i) \neq \emptyset.

Complexity and Computation of Connected Zero Forcing
Published • View Publication • BIB
Zero forcing is an iterative graph coloring process whereby a colored vertex with a single uncolored neighbor forces that neighbor to be colored. It is NP-hard to find a minimum zero forcing set - a smallest set of initially colored vertices which forces the entire graph to be colored. We show that the problem remains NP-hard when the initially colored set induces a connected subgraph. We also give structural results about the connected zero forcing sets of a graph related to the graph's density, separating sets, and certain induced subgraphs, and we characterize the cardinality of the minimum connected zero forcing sets of unicyclic graphs and variants of cactus and block graphs. Finally, we identify several families of graphs whose connected zero forcing sets define greedoids and matroids.

Whitney numbers of arrangements via measure concentration of intrinsic volumes
We verify the Rota-Heron-Welsh conjecture for matroids realizable as c-arrangements: the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of the associated matroid are log-concave. This family of matroids strictly contains that of complex hyperplane arrangements. Our proof combines the study of intrinsic volumes of certain extensions of arrangements and the Levy--Milman measure concentration phenomenon on realization spaces of arrangements.

Laminar Matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
A laminar family is a collection $\mathscr{A}$ of subsets of a set $E$ such that, for any two intersecting sets, one is contained in the other. For a capacity function $c$ on $\mathscr{A}$, let $\mathscr{I}$ be $\{I:|I\cap A| \leq c(A)\text{ for all $A\in\mathscr{A}$}\}$. Then $\mathscr{I}$ is the collection of independent sets of a (laminar) matroid on $E$. We present a method of compacting laminar presentations, characterize the class of laminar matroids by their excluded minors, present a way to construct all laminar matroids using basic operations, and compare the class of laminar matroids to other well-known classes of matroids.

Almost balanced biased graph representations of frame matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a 3-connected biased graph $Ω$ with a balancing vertex, and with frame matroid $F(Ω)$ nongraphic and 3-connected, we determine all biased graphs $Ω'$ with $F(Ω') = F(Ω)$. As a consequence, we show that if $M$ is a 4-connected nongraphic frame matroid represented by a biased graph $Ω$ having a balancing vertex, then $Ω$ essentially uniquely represents $M$. More precisely, all biased graphs representing $M$ are obtained from $Ω$ by replacing a subset of the edges incident to its unique balancing vertex with unbalanced loops.

A counterexample to the extension space conjecture for realizable oriented matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
The extension space conjecture of oriented matroid theory states that the space of all one-element, non-loop, non-coloop extensions of a realizable oriented matroid of rank $d$ has the homotopy type of a sphere of dimension $d-1$. We disprove this conjecture by showing the existence of a realizable uniform oriented matroid of high rank and corank 3 with disconnected extension space.

On the Maximum-Weight Basis Problem
Let M to be a matroid defined on a finite set E. A subset L of E is locked in M if L is 2-connected in M, the complement of L is 2-connected in the dual M*, and min{r(L), r*(complement of L)} is greater than 1. In this paper, we prove that the nontrivial facets of the bases polytope of M are described by the locked subsets. We deduce that finding the maximum-weight basis of M is a polynomial problem for matroids with a polynomial number of locked subsets. This class of matroids is closed under 2-sums and contains uniform matroids.

Reconstruction of infinite matroids from their 3-connected minors
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that any infinite matroid can be reconstructed from the torsos of a tree-decomposition over its 2-separations, together with local information at the ends of the tree. We show that if the matroid is tame then this local information is simply a choice of whether circuits are permitted to use that end. The same is true if each torso is planar, with all gluing elements on a common face.

L-Infinity optimization in tropical geometry and phylogenetics
We investigate uniqueness issues that arise in $l^\infty$-optimization to linear spaces and Bergman fans of matroids. For linear spaces, we give a polyhedral decomposition of $\mathbb{R}^n$ based on the dimension of the set of $l^\infty$-nearest neighbors. This implies that the $l^\infty$-nearest neighbor in a linear space is unique if and only if the underlying matroid is uniform. For Bergman fans of matroids, we show that the set of $l^\infty$-nearest points is a tropical polytope and give an algorithm to compute its tropical vertices. A key ingredient here is a notion of topology that generalizes tree topology. These results have practical implications for distance-based phylogenetic reconstruction using the $l^\infty$-metric. We analyze the possible dimensions of the set of $l^\infty$-nearest equidistant tree metrics to an arbitrary dissimilarity map and the number of tree topologies represented in this set. For both 3 and 4-leaf trees, we decompose the space of dissimilarity maps relative to the tree topologies represented.

Hypercellular graphs: partial cubes without $Q_3^-$ as partial cube minor
We investigate the structure of isometric subgraphs of hypercubes (i.e., partial cubes) which do not contain finite convex subgraphs contractible to the 3-cube minus one vertex $Q^-_3$ (here contraction means contracting the edges corresponding to the same coordinate of the hypercube). Extending similar results for median and cellular graphs, we show that the convex hull of an isometric cycle of such a graph is gated and isomorphic to the Cartesian product of edges and even cycles. Furthermore, we show that our graphs are exactly the class of partial cubes in which any finite convex subgraph can be obtained from the Cartesian products of edges and even cycles via successive gated amalgams. This decomposition result enables us to establish a variety of results. In particular, it yields that our class of graphs generalizes median and cellular graphs, which motivates naming our graphs hypercellular. Furthermore, we show that hypercellular graphs are tope graphs of zonotopal complexes of oriented matroids. Finally, we characterize hypercellular graphs as being median-cell -- a property naturally generalizing the notion of median graphs.
Generalized Permutohedra from Probabilistic Graphical Models
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graphical model encodes conditional independence relations via the Markov properties. For an undirected graph these conditional independence relations can be represented by a simple polytope known as the graph associahedron, which can be constructed as a Minkowski sum of standard simplices. There is an analogous polytope for conditional independence relations coming from a regular Gaussian model, and it can be defined using multiinformation or relative entropy. For directed acyclic graphical models and also for mixed graphical models containing undirected, directed and bidirected edges, we give a construction of this polytope, up to equivalence of normal fans, as a Minkowski sum of matroid polytopes. Finally, we apply this geometric insight to construct a new ordering-based search algorithm for causal inference via directed acyclic graphical models.

Matroid Filtrations and Computational Persistent Homology
This technical report introduces a novel approach to efficient computation in homological algebra over fields, with particular emphasis on computing the persistent homology of a filtered topological cell complex. The algorithms here presented rely on a novel relationship between discrete Morse theory, matroid theory, and classical matrix factorizations. We provide background, detail the algorithms, and benchmark the software implementation in the Eirene package.

A Simpler Self-reduction Algorithm for Matroid Path-width
Path-width of matroids naturally generalizes the better known parameter of path-width for graphs, and is NP-hard by a reduction from the graph case. While the term matroid path-width was formally introduced by Geelen-Gerards-Whittle [JCTB 2006] in pure matroid theory, it was soon recognized by Kashyap [SIDMA 2008] that it is the same concept as long-studied so called trellis complexity in coding theory, later named trellis-width, and hence it is an interesting notion also from the algorithmic perspective. It follows from a result of Hlineny [JCTB 2006] that the decision problem, whether a given matroid over a finite field has path-width at most t, is fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) in t, but this result does not give any clue about constructing a path-decomposition. The first constructive and rather complicated FPT algorithm for path-width of matroids over a finite field was given by Jeong-Kim-Oum [SODA 2016]. Here we propose a simpler "self-reduction" FPT algorithm for a path-decomposition. Precisely, we design an efficient routine that constructs an optimal path-decomposition of a matroid by calling any subroutine for testing whether the path-width of a matroid is at most t (such as the aforementioned decision algorithm for matroid path-width).

Matroid multiple cyclic exchange property
We prove a new exchange property for bases of a matroid that generalizes the multiple symmetric exchange property. For every bases $B_1,\dots,B_k$ of a matroid and a subset $A_1\subset B_1$ there exist subsets $A_2\subset B_2,\dots,A_k\subset B_k$ such that all sets $(B_i\setminus A_i)\cup A_{i-1}$ achieved by a cyclic shift of $A_i$'s by one are bases.

A new presentation for the inner Tutte group of a matroid
The inner Tutte group of a matroid is a finitely generated abelian group introduced as an algebraic counterpart of Tutte's homotopy theory of matroids. The aim of this work is to provide a new presentation for this group with a set of generators that is smaller than those previously known.
Antistrong digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
An antidirected trail in a digraph is a trail (a walk with no arc repeated) in which the arcs alternate between forward and backward arcs. An antidirected path is an antidirected trail where no vertex is repeated. We show that it is NP-complete to decide whether two vertices $x,y$ in a digraph are connected by an antidirected path, while one can decide in linear time whether they are connected by an antidirected trail. A digraph $D$ is antistrong if it contains an antidirected $(x,y)$-trail starting and ending with a forward arc for every choice of $x,y\in V(D)$. We show that antistrong connectivity can be decided in linear time. We discuss relations between antistrong connectivity and other properties of a digraph and show that the arc-minimal antistrong spanning subgraphs of a digraph are the bases of a matroid on its arc-set. We show that one can determine in polynomial time the minimum number of new arcs whose addition to $D$ makes the resulting digraph the arc-disjoint union of $k$ antistrong digraphs. In particular, we determine the minimum number of new arcs which need to be added to a digraph to make it antistrong. We use results from matroid theory to characterize graphs which have an antistrong orientation and give a polynomial time algorithm for constructing such an orientation when it exists. This immediately gives analogous results for graphs which have a connected bipartite 2-detachment. Finally, we study arc-decompositions of antistrong digraphs and pose several problems and conjectures.

Templates for Binary Matroids
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics 31 (2017), 254-282 • View Publication • BIB
A binary frame template is a device for creating binary matroids from graphic or cographic matroids. Such matroids are said to conform or coconform to the template. We introduce a preorder on these templates and determine the nontrivial templates that are minimal with respect to this order. As an application of our main result, we determine the eventual growth rates of certain minor-closed classes of binary matroids, including the class of binary matroids with no minor isomorphic to PG(3,2). Our main result applies to all highly-connected matroids in a class, not just those of maximum size. As a second application, we characterize the highly-connected 1-flowing matroids.

Dense PG(n-1,2)-free binary matroids
For each integer $n \geq 2$, we prove that, if $M$ is a simple rank-$r$ $PG(n-1,2)$-free binary matroid with $|M|>\left(1-\frac{3}{2^n}\right)2^r$, then there is a triangle-free corank-$(n-2)$ flat of $M$.

Displaying tangles and non-sequential separations
We show that, for any graph or matroid, there is a tree that simultaneously distinguishes its maximal tangles, and, for each maximal tangle $\mathcal{T}$ that satisfies an additional robustness condition, displays all of the non-trivial separations relative to $\mathcal{T}$, up to a natural equivalence.
