Random words, quantum statistics, central limits, random matrices
Published in Methods Appl. Anal. 9 (2002), no. 1, 101-119 • View Publication • BIB
Recently Tracy and Widom conjectured [math.CO/9904042] and Johansson proved [math.CO/9906120] that the expected shape λof the semi-standard tableau produced by a random word in k letters is asymptotically the spectrum of a random traceless k by k GUE matrix. In this article we give two arguments for this fact. In the first argument, we realize the random matrix itself as a quantum random variable on the space of random words, if this space is viewed as a quantum state space. In the second argument, we show that the distribution of λis asymptotically given by the usual local limit theorem, but the resulting Gaussian is disguised by an extra polynomial weight and by reflecting walls. Both arguments more generally apply to an arbitrary finite-dimensional representation V of an arbitrary simple Lie algebra g. In the original question, V is the defining representation of g = su(k).

On Multi-color partitions and the generalized Rogers-Ramanujan identities
Published in Commun. Cont. Math. 3 (2001), 533-548 • View Publication • BIB
Basil Gordon, in the sixties, and George Andrews, in the seventies, generalized the Rogers-Ramanujan identities to higher moduli. These identities arise in many areas of mathematics and mathematical physics. One of these areas is representation theory of infinite dimensional Lie algebras, where various known interpretations of these identities have led to interesting applications. Motivated by their connections with Lie algebra representation theory, we give a new interpretation of a sum related to generalized Rogers-Ramanujan identities in terms of multi-color partitions.

Polyhedral Realizations of Crystal Bases and Braid-type Isomorphisms
Published • View Publication • BIB
We review the polyhedral realizations of crystal bases in the former half and in the latter half, we introduce braid-type isomorphisms for some rank 2 finite type crystals. Using this isomorphisms, for semi-simple Lie algebra we can show that polyhedral realizations can be obtained in the lattice of finite rank which coincides with the length of the longest element in the associated Weyl group.

Conjugate Bailey pairs
In this paper it is shown that the one-dimensional configuration sums of the solvable lattice models of Andrews, Baxter and Forrester and the string functions associated with admissible representations of the affine Lie algebra A$_1^{(1)}$ as introduced by Kac and Wakimoto can be exploited to yield a very general class of conjugate Bailey pairs. Using the recently established fermionic or constant-sign expressions for the one-dimensional configuration sums, our result is employed to derive fermionic expressions for fractional-level string functions, parafermion characters and A$_1^{(1)}$ branching functions. In addition, $q$-series identities are obtained whose Lie algebraic and/or combinatorial interpretation is still lacking.

Principal Nilpotent pairs in a semisimple Lie algebra, I
Published • View Publication • BIB
This is the first of a series of papers devoted to certain pairs of commuting nilpotent elements in a semisimple Lie algebra that enjoy quite remarkable properties and which are expected to play a major role in Representation theory. The properties of these pairs and their role is similar to those of the principal nilpotents. To any principal nilpotent pair we associate a two-parameter analogue of the Kostant partition function, and propose the corresponding two-parameter analogue of the weight multiplicity formula. In a different direction, each principal nilpotent pair gives rise to a harmonic polynomial on the Cartesian square of the Cartan subalgebra, that transforms under an irreducible representation of the Weyl group. In the special case of sl_n, the conjugacy classes of principal nilpotent pairs and the irreducible representations of the Symmetric group, S_n, are both parametrised (in a compatible way) by Young diagrams. In general, our theory provides a natural generalization to arbitrary Weyl groups of the classical construction of simple S_n-modules in terms of Young's symmetrisers.

Semisimple orbits of Lie algebras and card shuffling on Coxeter groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Random walk on the chambers of hyperplanes arrangements is used to define a family of card shuffling measures $H_{W,x}$ for a finite Coxeter group W and real $x \neq 0$. By algebraic group theory, there is a map from the semisimple orbits of the adjoint action of a finite group of Lie type on its Lie algebra to the conjugacy classes of the Weyl group. Choosing such a semisimple orbit uniformly at random thereby induces a probability measure on the conjugacy classes of the Weyl group. For types A, B, and the identity conjugacy class of W for all types, it is proved that for q very good, this measure on conjugacy classes is equal to the measure arising from $H_{W,q}$.

Polynomial Relations Among Characters coming from Quantum Affine Algebras
Published in Mathematical Research Letters 5 (1998), 731--742 • View Publication • BIB
The Jacobi-Trudi formula implies some interesting quadratic identities for characters of representations of $gl_n$. Earlier work of Kirillov and Reshetikhin proposed a generalization of these identities to the other classical Lie algebras, and conjectured that the characters of certain finite-dimensional representations of $U_q(g-affine)$ satisfy it. Here we use a positivity argument to show that the generalized identities have only one solution.

Regular nilpotent elements and quantum groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
We suggest new realizations of quantum groups corresponding to complex simple Lie algebras, and of affine quantum groups. These new realizations are labeled by Coxeter elements of the corresponding Weyl group and have the following key feature: The natural counterparts of the subalgebras U(n), where n is a maximal nilpotent subalgebra in g, possess non--singular characters.

On the Combinatorial Structure of Primitive Vassiliev Invariants, III - A Lower Bound
Published in Commun. Contemp. Math. 2 (2000), no. 4, 579--590 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the dimension of the space of primitive Vassiliev invariants of degree n grows - as n tends to infinity - faster than Exp(c Sqrt(n)) for any c < Pi Sqrt (2/3). The proof relies on the use of the weight systems coming from the Lie algebra gl(N). In fact, we show that our bound is - up to multiplication with a rational function in n - the best possible that one can get with gl(N)-weight systems.

Enumeration of walks on lattices. I
This work develops a methodical approach to counting of walks on cartesian products, biproducts, symmetric and exterior powers and bipowers, Schur operations, coverings and semicoverings of weighted graphs. For weight and root lattices of semisimple Lie algebras, this approach allows us to compute various combinatorial and representation-theoretical constants, in particular, the number of plane symplectic wave graphs with given number of vertices.

Diagrams of representations
For a representation of a Lie algebra, one can construct a diagram of the representation, i. e. a directed graph with edges labeled by matrix elements of the representation. This article explains how to use these diagrams to describe normal forms, orbits and invariants of the representation, especially for the case of nilpotent Lie algebras.

Counting semisimple orbits of finite Lie algebras by genus
Published • View Publication • BIB
The adjoint action of a finite group of Lie type on its Lie algebra is studied. A simple formula is conjectured for the number of split semisimple orbits of a given genus. This conjecture is proved for type A, and partial results are obtained for other types. For type A a probabilistic interpretation is given in terms of card shuffling.

The Rogers-Ramanujan Identities, the Finite General Linear Groups, and the Hall-Littlewood Polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Rogers-Ramanujan identities have been studied from the viewpoints of combinatorics, number theory, affine Lie algebras, statistical mechanics, and quantum field theory. This note connects the Rogers-Ramanujan identities with the finite general linear groups and the Hall-Littlewood polynomials of symmetric function theory.

Semisimple orbits of Lie algebras and card shuffling measures on Coxeter groups
Published in Latest version is math.GR/9903012 • View Publication • BIB
Solomon's descent algebra is used to define a family of signed measures M(W,x) for a finite Coxeter group W and non-zero x. The measures corresponding to W of types A and B are known to arise from the theory of card shuffling and to be related to the Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt theorem and splittings of Hochschild homology. Formulas for these measures are obtained in special cases. The eigenvalues of the associated Markov chains are computed. By elementary algebraic group theory, choosing a random semisimple orbit on a Lie algebra corresponding to a finite group of Lie type G^F induces a measure on the conjugacy classes of the Weyl group W of G^F. It is conjectured that this measure on conjugacy classes is equal to the measure arising from M(W,q) (and further that M(W,q) is non-negative on all elements of W). This conjecture is proved for all types for the identity conjugacy class of W, and is confirmed for all conjugacy classes for W of types A, B, and C.

Spiders for rank 2 Lie algebras
Published in Comm. Math. Phys. 180(1):109-151, 1996 • View Publication • BIB
A spider is an axiomatization of the representation theory of a group, quantum group, Lie algebra, or other group or group-like object. We define certain combinatorial spiders by generators and relations that are isomorphic to the representation theories of the three rank two simple Lie algebras, namely A2, B2, and G2. They generalize the widely-used Temperley-Lieb spider for A1. Among other things, they yield bases for invariant spaces which are probably related to Lusztig's canonical bases, and they are useful for computing quantities such as generalized 6j-symbols and quantum link invariants.
