Enumerating the Prime Alternating Knots, Part I
This is the first in a series of four papers wherein we enumerate all prime alternating knots and links. In this first paper, we introduce four operators on knots and show that, when used according to very simple rules on the prime alternating knots of n crossings, the set of all prime alternating knots of n+1 crossings is obtained. The second paper (Part II) explains how to actually implement the operators in an efficient manner, although that is in a sense secondary to introduction of a complete invariant for prime alternating knots, called the master array of a prime alternating knot. The third paper in the series establishes a method for enumerating the prime alternating links. It is shown that one may choose any prime alternating link diagram of a given minimal crossing size and by applications of just two operators (namely T and OTS) to the selected seed link, one obtains all prime alternating link diagrams of the desired minimal crossing size. The fourth paper introduces the analogue of the master array for prime alternating links.

Generating functions, Fibonacci numbers and rational knots
Published in J. Algebra 310(2) (2007), 491--525. • View Publication • BIB
We describe rational knots with any of the possible combinations of the properties (a)chirality, (non-)positivity, (non-)fiberedness, and unknotting number one (or higher), and determine exactly their number for a given number of crossings in terms of their generating functions. We show in particular how Fibonacci numbers occur in the enumeration of fibered achiral and unknotting number one rational knots. Then we show how to enumerate rational knots by crossing number and genus and/or signature. This allows to determine the distribution of these invariants among rational knots. We give also an application to the enumeration of lens spaces.

An Orientation-Sensitive Vassiliev Invariant for Virtual Knots
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is an open question whether there are Vassiliev invariants that can distinguish an oriented knot from its inverse, i.e., the knot with the opposite orientation. In this article, an example is given for a first order Vassiliev invariant that takes different values on a virtual knot and its inverse. The Vassiliev invariant is derived from the Conway polynomial for virtual knots. Furthermore, it is shown that the zeroth order Vassiliev invariant coming from the Conway polynomial cannot distinguish a virtual link from its inverse and that it vanishes for virtual knots.

On Filamentations and Virtual Knots
Published in Topology and its Applications. 134 (2003), 23-52. • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we discuss filamentations on oriented chord diagrams. When a filamentation cannot be realized on an oriented chord diagram, then the corresponding flat virtual knot is non-trivial. If a flat knot diagram is non-trivial, then any virtual diagram whose shadow is the flat diagram must also be non-trivial. We introduce a class of flat diagrams for which no filamentations exist. This class gives the first example of an infinite set of virtual knots for which the Jones polynomial and the fundamental group both evaluate trivially. The related generalized Alexander polynomials for the virtual knots in this class turn out to be distinct, proving that the class is indeed infinite.

A Transfer Matrix approach to the Enumeration of Knots
Published • View Publication • BIB
We propose a new method to enumerate alternating knots using a transfer matrix approach. We apply it to count numerically various objects, including prime alternating tangles with two connected components, up to order 18--22, and comment on the large-order behavior in connection with one of the authors' conjecture.

Matroid Theory and Chern-Simons
Published in J.Math.Phys.41:7997-8005,2000 • View Publication • BIB
It is shown that matroid theory may provide a natural mathematical framework for a duality symmetries not only for quantum Yang-Mills physics, but also for M-theory. Our discussion is focused in an action consisting purely of the Chern-Simons term, but in principle the main ideas can be applied beyond such an action. In our treatment the theorem due to Thistlethwaite, which gives a relationship between the Tutte polynomial for graphs and Jones polynomial for alternating knots and links, plays a central role. Before addressing this question we briefly mention some important aspects of matroid theory and we point out a connection between the Fano matroid and D=11 supergravity. Our approach also seems to be related to loop solutions of quantum gravity based in Ashtekar formalism.

On a Planarity Criterion Coming from Knot Theory
A graph G is called "minimalizable" if a diagram with minimal crossing number can be obtained from an arbitrary diagram of G by crossing changes. If, furthermore, the minimal diagram is unique up to crossing changes then G is called "strongly minimalizable". In this article, it is explained how minimalizability of a graph is related to its automorphism group and it is shown that a graph is strongly minimalizable if the automorphism group is trivial or isomorphic to a product of symmetric groups. Then, the treatment of crossing number problems in graph theory by knot theoretical means is discussed and, as an example, a planarity criterion for minimalizable graphs is given.

On Alexander-Conway Polynomials for Virtual Knots and Links
A polynomial invariant of virtual links, arising from an invariant of links in thickened surfaces introduced by Jaeger, Kauffman, and Saleur, is defined and its properties are investigated. Examples are given that the invariant can detect chirality and even non-invertibility of virtual knots and links. Furthermore, it is shown that the polynomial satisfies a Conway-type skein relation - in contrast to the Alexander polynomial derived from the virtual link group.
Special Values of Multiple Polylogarithms
Published in Transactions of the American Mathematical Society, Vol. 353 (2001), no. 3, pp. 907-941. MR1709772 (2003i:33003) • View Publication • BIB
Historically, the polylogarithm has attracted specialists and non-specialists alike with its lovely evaluations. Much the same can be said for Euler sums (or multiple harmonic sums), which, within the past decade, have arisen in combinatorics, knot theory and high-energy physics. More recently, we have been forced to consider multidimensional extensions encompassing the classical polylogarithm, Euler sums, and the Riemann zeta function. Here, we provide a general framework within which previously isolated results can now be properly understood. Applying the theory developed herein, we prove several previously conjectured evaluations, including an intriguing conjecture of Don Zagier.

Some Matrix Integrals related to Knots and Links
Published • View Publication • BIB
The study of a certain class of matrix integrals can be motivated by their interpretation as counting objects of knot theory such as alternating prime links, tangles or knots. The simplest such model is studied in detail and allows to rederive recent results of Sundberg and Thistlethwaite. The second non-trivial example turns out to be essentially the so-called ABAB model, though in this case the analysis has not yet been carried out completely. Further generalizations are discussed. This is a review of work done (in part) in collaboration with J.-B. Zuber.

We estimate from above the set of knots, $Ω(n,μ)$, generated by closure of n-string 1+1- and 2+1-dimensional braids of irreducible length $μ$ ($μ>>1$) in the limit n>>1.

The number of independent Vassiliev invariants in the Homfly and Kauffman polynomials
Published in Documenta Mathematica, Vol 5(2000), 275-299 • View Publication • BIB
We consider vector spaces H(n,l) and F(n,l) spanned by the degree-n coefficients in power series forms of the Homfly and Kauffman polynomials of links with l components. Generalizing previously known formulas, we determine the dimensions of the spaces H(n,l), F(n,l) and H(n,l)+F(n,l) for all values of n and l. Furthermore, we show that for knots the algebra generated by H(n,1)+F(n,1) (n > 0) is a polynomial algebra with dim(H(n,1)+F(n,1))-1=n+[n/2]-4 generators in degree n>3 and one generator in degrees 2 and 3.

Vassiliev theory and regional change
The purpose of this note is to state some definitions that may be useful in the study of knots, manifolds and the like. They apply to anything for which the concept of a regional change can be defined, such as a product of elements in a group.
