Alternating odd cycles and orientations of Kneser-like graphs
We call an oriented odd cycle alternating if it has exactly one vertex whose in-degree and out-degree are both positive. In this paper, we investigate whether certain graphs admit an orientation that avoids alternating odd cycles as subgraphs, or one in which all their shortest odd cycles become alternating. Our focus is on topologically $χ$-chromatic graphs, that is, graphs for which the topological method yields a sharp lower bound on the chromatic number. We present results for several graph families, including Kneser graphs, Schrijver graphs, and generalized Mycielski graphs.

Injective (edge) colorings of generalized Sierpiński graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Generalized Sierpiński graphs constitute a distinctive class of fractal-like networks, whose self-similar properties have attracted growing attention. In particular, a number of graph invariants have been studied in generalized Sierpiński graphs. In this paper, we focus on injective colorings of this class of graphs, both the vertex and the edge version. The vertex version of injective colorings in generalized Sierpiński graphs was initiated in [Injective colorings of Sierpiński-like graphs and Kneser graphs,Graphs.\ Combin.\ 41 (2025) 83], where the authors determined the injective chromatic numbers of the standard Sierpiński graphs (which are those whose base graph is a clique) and asked about the values when the base graph is a cycle. We resolve this question by proving that $χ_i(S_{C_k}^n)=3$ for every $n\ge 2$ and every $k\ge 3$, which follows from a more general result on generalized Sierpi\' nski graphs $S_G^n$ with arbitrary base graphs $G$. Moreover, we prove (an almost conclusive result) that $χ_i(S_G^n)\in \{χ_i(G),χ_i(G)+1\}$ for any graph $G$ and any $n\ge 2$. Injective edge colorings appear to be more difficult, especially in graphs with triangles. On a positive note, we prove that $χ_i'(S_{K_3}^n)=5$ for all $n\ge 3$. Furthermore, if $G$ is a triangle-free graph, we prove that $χ_i'(S_G^n)\in \{χ_i'(S_G^3),χ_i'(S_G^3)+1\}$ for all $n\ge 4$, and provide some sufficient conditions on an injective edge coloring of the 3-dimensional Sierpiński graph over $G$, which ensure that $χ_i'(S_G^n)=χ_i'(S_G^3)$. In particular, the latter result enables us to establish that $χ_i'(S_{C_4}^n)=3$, $χ_i'(S_{C_5}^n)=4$ and $χ_i'(S_{C_6}^n)=3$ hold for any $n\ge 2$.

The generalizations of Erdős matching conjecture for $t$-matching number
Published • View Publication • BIB
Define a \textit{$t$-matching} of size $m$ in a $k$-uniform family as a collection $\{A_1, A_2, \ldots, A_m\} \subseteq \binom{[n]}{k}$ such that $|A_i \cap A_j| < t$ for all $1 \leq i < j \leq m$. Let $\mathcal{F}\subseteq \binom{[n]}{k}$. The \textit{$t$-matching number} of $\mathcal{F}$, denoted by $ν_t(\mathcal{F})$, is the maximum size of a $t$-matching contained in $\mathcal{F}$. We study the maximum cardinality of a family $\mathcal{F}\subseteq\binom{[n]}{k}$ with given $t$-matching number, which is a generalization of Erdős matching conjecture, and we additionally prove a stability result. We also determine the second largest maximal structure with $ν_t(\mathcal{F})=s$, extending work of Frankl and Kupavskii \cite{frankl2016two}. Finally, we obtain the extremal $G$-free induced subgraphs of generalized Kneser graph, generalizing Alishahi's results in \cite{alishahi2018extremal}.
The zero blocking numbers of generalized Kneser graphs and generalized Johnson graphs
This paper extends the results by Afzali, Ghodrati and Maimani for the zero blocking numbers of Kneser graphs and Johnson graphs to generalized Kneser graphs and generalized Johnson graphs.
Matroids, intersecting bases, and Borsuk property
A subset $S$ of $\mathbb R^d$ has the Borsuk property if it can be decomposed into at most $d+1$ parts of diameter smaller than $S$. This is an important geometric property, inspired by a conjecture of Borsuk from the 1930s, which has attracted considerable attention over the years. In this paper, we define and investigate the Borsuk property for matroids, providing a purely combinatorial approach to the Borsuk property for matroid polytopes, a well-studied family of $(0,1)$-polytopes associated with matroids. We show that a sufficient condition for a matroid -- and thus its matroid polytope -- to have the Borsuk property is that the matroid or its dual has two disjoint bases. However, we show that this condition is not necessary by exhibiting infinite families of matroids having the Borsuk property and yet being such that every two bases intersect and every two cobases intersect. Kneser graphs, which form an important object from topological combinatorics, play a crucial role in most proofs.
Stability with minuscule structure for chromatic thresholds
Published • View Publication • BIB
The chromatic threshold $δ_χ(H)$ of a graph $H$ is the infimum of $d>0$ such that the chromatic number of every $n$-vertex $H$-free graph with minimum degree at least $d n$ is bounded by a constant depending only on $H$ and $d$. Allen, B{ö}ttcher, Griffiths, Kohayakawa, and Morris determined the chromatic threshold for every $H$; in particular, they showed that if $χ(H)=r\ge 3$, then $δ_χ(H) \in\{\frac{r-3}{r-2},~\frac{2 r-5}{2 r-3},~\frac{r-2}{r-1}\}$. While the chromatic thresholds have been completely determined, rather surprisingly the structural behaviors of extremal graphs near the threshold remain unexplored. In this paper, we establish the stability theorems for chromatic threshold problems. We prove that every $n$-vertex $H$-free graph $G$ with $δ(G)\ge (δ_χ(H)-o(1))n$ and $χ(G)=ω(1)$ must be structurally close to one of the extremal configurations. Furthermore, we give a stronger stability result when $H$ is a clique, showing that $G$ admits a partition into independent sets and a small subgraph on sublinear number of vertices. We show that this small subgraph has fractional chromatic number $2+o(1)$ and is homomorphic to a Kneser graph defined by subsets of a logarithmic size set; both these two bounds are best possible. This is the first stability result that captures the lower-order structural features of extremal graphs. We also study two variations of chromatic thresholds. Replacing chromatic number by its fractional counterpart, we determine the fractional chromatic thresholds for all graphs. Another variation is the bounded-VC chromatic thresholds, which was introduced by Liu, Shangguan, Skokan, and Xu very recently. Extending work of Łuczak and Thomass{é} on the triangle case, we determine the bounded-VC chromatic thresholds for all cliques.
Odd Hadwiger's conjecture for the complements of Kneser graphs
A generalization of the four-color theorem, Hadwiger's conjecture is considered as one of the most important and challenging problems in graph theory, and odd Hadwiger's conjecture is a strengthening of Hadwiger's conjecture by way of signed graphs. In this paper, we prove that odd Hadwiger's conjecture is true for the complements $\overline{K}(n,k)$ of the Kneser graphs $K(n,k)$, where $n\geq 2k \ge 4$. This improves a result of G. Xu and S. Zhou (2017) which states that Hadwiger's conjecture is true for this family of graphs. Moreover, we prove that $\overline{K}(n,k)$ contains a 1-shallow complete minor of a special type with order no less than the chromatic number $χ(\overline{K}(n,k))$, and in the case when $7 \le 2k+1 \le n \le 3k-1$ the gap between the odd Hadwiger number and chromatic number of $\overline{K}(n,k)$ is $Ω(1.5^{k})$.
Totally odd subdivisions in Kneser graphs
As evidence for the Odd Hadwiger Conjecture, Simonyi and Zsbán (2010) showed that every Kneser graph $G$ with large enough order (compared to $χ(G)$) contains a totally odd subdivision of $K_{χ(G)}$. A recent result of Steiner (2024), shows that every Schriver graph, and thus every Kneser graph, satisfies the Odd Hadwiger Conjecture, that is, it contains $K_{χ(G)}$ as an odd minor. We strengthen these results for Kneser graphs in two ways. We show that for every $t\ge 8$, there are $t$-chromatic Kneser graphs that contain arbitrarily large complete totally odd subdivisions (and thus, odd minors). We also show that every Kneser graph contains a totally odd subdivision of $K_{χ(G)}$. Kneser graphs are the prime example of graphs having chromatic number equal to its topological lower bounds. Motivated by our main results, we also study totally odd immersions on graphs with this property, proving, in particular, that if the chromatic number of $G$ is equal to any of its topological lower bounds, then $G$ contains a totally odd immersion of $K_{\lfloor χ(G)/2 \rfloor +1}$. This gives evidence for the immersion-analogue of the Odd Hadwiger Conjecture.

Kneser's theorem for codes and $\ell$-divisible set families
Published • View Publication • BIB
A $k$-wise $\ell$-divisible set family is a collection $\mathcal{F}$ of subsets of ${ \{1,\ldots,n \} }$ such that any intersection of $k$ sets in $\mathcal{F}$ has cardinality divisible by $\ell$. If $k=\ell=2$, it is well-known that $|\mathcal{F}|\leq 2^{\lfloor n/2 \rfloor}$. We generalise this by proving that $|\mathcal{F}|\leq 2^{\lfloor n/p\rfloor}$ if $k=\ell=p$, for any prime number $p$. For arbitrary values of $\ell$, we prove that $4\ell^2$-wise $\ell$-divisible set families $\mathcal{F}$ satisfy $|\mathcal{F}|\leq 2^{\lfloor n/\ell\rfloor}$ and that the only families achieving the upper bound are atomic, meaning that they consist of all the unions of disjoint subsets of size $\ell$. This improves upon a recent result by Gishboliner, Sudakov and Timon, that arrived at the same conclusion for $k$-wise $\ell$-divisible families, with values of $k$ that behave exponentially in $\ell$. Our techniques rely heavily upon a coding-theory analogue of Kneser's Theorem from additive combinatorics.
Defect and transference versions of the Alon-Frankl-Lovasz theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
Confirming a conjecture of Erdős on the chromatic number of Kneser hypergraphs, Alon, Frankl and Lovász proved that in any $q$-colouring of the edges of the complete $r$-uniform hypergraph, there exists a monochromatic matching of size $\lfloor \frac{n+q-1}{r+q-1}\rfloor$. In this paper, we prove a transference version of this theorem. More precisely, for fixed $q$ and $r$, we show that with high probability, a monochromatic matching of approximately the same size exists in any $q$-colouring of a random hypergraph, already when the average degree is a sufficiently large constant. In fact, our main new result is a defect version of the Alon--Frankl--Lovász theorem for almost complete hypergraphs. From this, the transference version is obtained via a variant of the weak hypergraph regularity lemma. The proof of the defect version uses tools from extremal set theory developed in the study of the Erdős matching conjecture.
Optimal Constructions for DNA Self-Assembly of $k$-Regular Graphs
Within biology, it is of interest to construct DNA complexes of a certain shape. These complexes can be represented through graph theory, using edges to model strands of DNA joined at junctions, represented by vertices. Because guided construction is inefficient, design strategies for DNA self-assembly are desirable. In the flexible tile model, branched DNA molecules are referred to as tiles, each consisting of flexible unpaired cohesive ends with the ability to form bond-edges. We thus consider the minimum number of tile and bond-edge types necessary to construct a graph $G$ (i.e. a target structure) without allowing the formation of graphs of lesser order, or nonisomorphic graphs of equal order. We emphasize the concept of (un)swappable graphs, establishing lower bounds for unswappable graphs. We also introduce a method of establishing upper bounds via vertex covers. We apply both of these methods to prove new bounds on rook's graphs and Kneser graphs.
The finite basis problem for additively idempotent semirings that relate to S_7
The $3$-element additively idempotent semiring $S_7$ is a nonnitely based algebra of the smallest possible order. In this paper we study the nite basis problem for some additively idempotent semirings that relate to $S_7$. We present a su cient condition under which an additively idempotent semiring variety is nonnitely based and as applications, show that some additively idempotent semiring varieties that contain $S_7$ are also nonnitely based. We then consider the subdirectly irreducible members of the variety $\mathsf{V}(S_7)$ generated by $S_7$. We show that $\mathsf{V}(S_7)$ contains exactly $6$ finitely based subvarieties, all of which sit at the base of the subvariety lattice, then invoke results from the homomorphism theory of Kneser graphs to verify that $\mathsf{V}(S_7)$ contains a continuum of subvarieties.

On the extremal number of incidence graphs
Given a graph $H$ and a natural number $n$, the extremal number $\mathrm{ex}(n, H)$ is the largest number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph containing no copy of $H$. In this paper, we obtain a general upper bound for the extremal number of generalised face-incidence graphs, a family which includes the standard face-incidence graphs of regular polytopes. This builds on and generalises work of Janzer and Sudakov, who obtained the same bound for hypercubes and bipartite Kneser graphs, and allows us to confirm a conjecture of Conlon and Lee on the extremal number of $K_{r,r}$-free bipartite graphs for certain incidence graphs. In their work, Janzer and Sudakov showed that such an upper bound on the extremal number holds whenever the graph $H$ satisfies a certain percolation property which captures an appropriate sequence of repeated applications of the Cauchy--Schwarz inequality, a property which they then verify for hypercubes and bipartite Kneser graphs. This percolation property bears close resemblance to a property that arose in earlier work of Conlon and Lee on weakly norming graphs. In this latter work, Conlon and Lee developed a method for controlling repeated applications of the Cauchy--Schwarz inequality based on the properties of reflection groups, which then allowed them to isolate a broad family of weakly norming graphs. Here, we develop this method further, casting it in a purely algebraic form that allows us not only to combine it with the Janzer--Sudakov result and obtain the desired result about the extremal number of incidence graphs, but also to simplify the proofs of both the Conlon--Lee result on weakly norming graphs and a related result of Coregliano.
Colouring signed analogues of Kneser, Schrijver, and Borsuk graphs
The Kneser signed graph $\KS(n,k)$, $k\leq n$, is the graph whose vertices are signed $k$-subsets of $[n]$ (i.e. $k$-subsets $S$ of $\{ \pm 1, \pm 2, \ldots, \pm n\}$ such that $S\cap (-S)=\emptyset$). Two vertices $A$ and $B$ are adjacent with a positive edge if $A\cap (-B)=\emptyset$ and with a negative edge if $A\cap B=\emptyset$. We prove that the balanced chromatic number of $\KS(n,k)$ is $n-k+1$. We then introduce the signed analogue of Schrijver graphs and show that they form vertex-critical subgraphs of $\KS(n,k)$ with respect to balanced colouring. Further connection to topological methods, in particular, connection to Borsuk signed graphs is also considered.

A Modular Inductive Proof of the Chen-Raspaud Conjecture via Graph Classification
It is conjectured by Chen and Raspaud that for each integer $k \ge 2$, any graph $G$ with \[ \mathrm{mad}(G) < \frac{2k+1}{k} \quad\text{and}\quad \mathrm{odd\text{-}girth}(G) \ge 2k+1 \] admits a homomorphism into the Kneser graph $K(2k+1,k)$. The base cases $k=2$ and $k=3$ are known from earlier work. A modular inductive proof is provided here, in which graphs at level $k+1$ are classified into four structural classes and are shown to admit no minimal counterexamples by means of forbidden configuration elimination, a discharging argument, path-collapsing techniques, and a combinatorial embedding of smaller Kneser graphs into larger ones. This argument completes the induction for all $k \ge 2$, thus settling the Chen-Raspaud conjecture in full generality.

Unimodular Hunting

We develop a method initiated by Bacher and Venkov, and based on a study of the Kneser neighbors of the standard lattice Z^n, which allows to classify the integral unimodular Euclidean lattices of rank n. As an application, of computational flavour, we determine the isometry classes of unimodular lattices of rank 26 and 27.

The Kneser chromatic function distinguishes trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
R.P. Stanley defined a invariant for graphs called the chromatic symmetric function and conjectured it is complete invariant for trees. Miezaki et al. generalised the chromatic symmetric function and defined the Kneser chromatic functions denoted by $\{X_{K_{\mathbb{N},k}}\}_{k\in\mathbb{N}}$, and rephrase Stanley's conjecture that $X_{K_{\mathbb{N},1}}$ is a complete invariant for trees. This paper shows $X_{K_{\mathbb{N},2}}$ is a complete invariant for trees.
Invariants of Bipartite Kneser B type-\MakeLowercase{k} graphs
Let $\mathscr{B}_n = \{ \pm x_1, \pm x_2, \pm x_3, \cdots, \pm x_{n-1}, x_n \}$ where $n>1$ is fixed, $x_i \in \mathbb{R}^+$, $i = 1, 2, 3, \cdots, n$ and $x_1 < x_2 < x_3 < \cdots < x_n$. Let $φ(\mathscr{B}_n)$ be the set of all non-empty subsets $S = \{u_1, u_2,\cdots, u_t\}$ of $\mathscr{B}_n$ such that $|u_1|<|u_2|<\cdots <|u_{t-1}|<u_t $ where $u_t\in \mathbb{R}^+$. Let $\mathscr{B}_n^+ = \{ x_1, x_2, x_3, \cdots, x_{n-1}, x_n \}$. For a fixed $k$, let $V_1$ be the set of $k$-element subsets of $\mathscr{B}_n^+$, $1 \leq k <n$. $V_2= φ(\mathscr{B}_n)-V_1$. For any $A \in V_2$, let $A^\dagger = \{\lvert x \rvert: x \in A\}$. Define a bipartite graph with parts $V_1$ and $V_2$ and having adjacency as $X \in V_1$ is adjacent to $Y\in V_2$ if and only if $X \subset Y^\dagger$ or $Y^\dagger \subset X$. A graph of this type is called a bipartite Kneser B type-$k$ graph and denoted by $H_B(n,k)$. In this paper, we calculated various graph invariants of $H_B(n,k)$.
Injective colorings of Sierpiński-like graphs and Kneser graphs
Two relationships between the injective chromatic number and, respectively, chromatic number and chromatic index, are proved. They are applied to determine the injective chromatic number of Sierpiński graphs and to give a short proof that Sierpiński graphs are Class $1$. Sierpiński-like graphs are also considered, including generalized Sierpiński graphs over cycles and rooted products. It is proved that the injective chromatic number of a rooted product of two graphs lies in a set of six possible values. Sierpiński graphs and Kneser graphs $K(n,r)$ are considered with respect of being perfect injectively colorable, where a graph is perfect injectively colorable if it has an injective coloring in which every color class forms an open packing of largest cardinality. In particular, all Sierpiński graphs and Kneser graphs $K(n, r)$ with $n \ge 3r-1$ are perfect injectively colorable graph, while $K(7,3)$ is not.
Colouring a graph with position sets
In this paper we consider a colouring version of the general position problem. The \emph{$\gp $-chromatic number} is the smallest number of colours needed to colour the vertices of the graph such that each colour class has the no-three-in-line property. We determine bounds on this colouring number in terms of the diameter, general position number, size, chromatic number, cochromatic number and total domination number and prove realisation results. We also determine the $\gp $-chromatic number of several graph classes, including Kneser graphs $K(n,2)$, line graphs of complete graphs, complete multipartite graphs, block graphs and Cartesian products. Finally, we show that the $\gp $-colouring problem is NP-complete.
