A new property of the Lovász number and duality relations between graph parameters

We show that for any graph $G$, by considering "activation" through the strong product with another graph $H$, the relation $α(G) \leq \vartheta(G)$ between the independence number and the Lovász number of $G$ can be made arbitrarily tight: Precisely, the inequality \[
α(G \times H) \leq \vartheta(G \times H) = \vartheta(G)\,\vartheta(H) \] becomes asymptotically an equality for a suitable sequence of ancillary graphs $H$.
This motivates us to look for other products of graph parameters of $G$ and $H$ on the right hand side of the above relation. For instance, a result of Rosenfeld and Hales states that \[
α(G \times H) \leq α^*(G)\,α(H), \] with the fractional packing number $α^*(G)$, and for every $G$ there exists $H$ that makes the above an equality; conversely, for every graph $H$ there is a $G$ that attains equality.
These findings constitute some sort of duality of graph parameters, mediated through the independence number, under which $α$ and $α^*$ are dual to each other, and the Lovász number $\vartheta$ is self-dual. We also show duality of Schrijver's and Szegedy's variants $\vartheta^-$ and $\vartheta^+$ of the Lovász number, and explore analogous notions for the chromatic number under strong and disjunctive graph products.

The Havel-Hakimi algorithm iteratively reduces the degree sequence of a graph to a list of zeroes. As shown by Favaron, Mahéo, and Saclé, the number of zeroes produced, known as the residue, is a lower bound on the independence number of the graph. We say that a graph has the strong Havel-Hakimi property if in each of its induced subgraphs, deleting any vertex of maximum degree reduces the degree sequence in the same way that the Havel-Hakimi algorithm does. We characterize graphs having this property (which include all threshold and matrogenic graphs) in terms of minimal forbidden induced subgraphs. We further show that for these graphs the residue equals the independence number, and a natural greedy algorithm always produces a maximum independent set.
New Lower Bounds for the Shannon Capacity of Odd Cycles

The Shannon capacity of a graph $G$ is defined as $c(G)=\sup_{d\geq 1}(α(G^d))^{\frac{1}{d}},$ where $α(G)$ is the independence number of $G$. The Shannon capacity of the cycle $C_5$ on $5$ vertices was determined by Lovász in 1979, but the Shannon capacity of a cycle $C_p$ for general odd $p$ remains one of the most notorious open problems in information theory. By prescribing stabilizers for the independent sets in $C_p^d$ and using stochastic search methods, we show that $α(C_7^5)\geq 350$, $α(C_{11}^4)\geq 748$, $α(C_{13}^4)\geq 1534$ and $α(C_{15}^3)\geq 381$. This leads to improved lower bounds on the Shannon capacity of $C_7$ and $C_{15}$: $c(C_7)\geq 350^{\frac{1}{5}}> 3.2271$ and $c(C_{15})\geq 381^{\frac{1}{3}}> 7.2495$.

In this paper, we study the structure of the permutability graphs of subgroups, and the permutability graphs of non-normal subgroups of the following groups: the dihedral groups $D_n$, the generalized quaternion groups $Q_n$, the quasi-dihedral groups $QD_{2^n}$ and the modular groups $M_{p^n}$. Further, we investigate the number of edges, degrees of the vertices, independence number, dominating number, clique number, chromatic number, weakly perfectness, Eulerianness, Hamiltonicity of these graphs.

We present a semidefinite programming approach to bound the measures of cross-independent pairs in a bipartite graph. This can be viewed as a far-reaching extension of Hoffman's ratio bound on the independence number of a graph. As an application, we solve a problem on the maximum measures of cross-intersecting families of subsets with two different product measures, which is a generalized measure version of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem for cross-intersecting families with different uniformities.

For a graph $G$ the expression $G \overset{v}{\rightarrow} (a_1, ..., a_s)$ means that for any $s$-coloring of the vertices of $G$ there exists $i \in \{1, ..., s\}$ such that there is a monochromatic $a_i$-clique of color $i$. The vertex Folkman numbers $$F_v(a_1, ..., a_s; m - 1) = \min\{\vert V(G) \vert : G \overset{v}{\rightarrow} (a_1, ..., a_s) \mbox{ and } K_{m - 1} \not\subseteq G\}.$$ are considered, where $m = \sum_{i = 1}^{s}(a_i - 1) + 1$.
With the help of computer we show that $F_v(2, 2, 5; 6) = 16$ and then we prove $$F_v(a_1, ..., a_s; m - 1) = m + 9,$$ if $\max\{a_1, ..., a_s\} = 5$.
We also obtain the bounds $$m + 9 \leq F_v(a_1, ..., a_s; m - 1) \leq m + 10,$$ if $\max\{a_1, ..., a_s\} = 6$.

A mapping of $k$-bit strings into $n$-bit strings is called an $(α,β)$-map if $k$-bit strings which are more than $αk$ apart are mapped to $n$-bit strings that are more than $βn$ apart. This is a relaxation of the classical problem of constructing error-correcting codes, which corresponds to $α=0$. Existence of an $(α,β)$-map is equivalent to existence of a graph homomorphism $\bar H(k,αk)\to \bar H(n,βn)$, where $H(n,d)$ is a Hamming graph with vertex set $\{0,1\}^n$ and edges connecting vertices differing in $d$ or fewer entries.
This paper proves impossibility results on achievable parameters $(α,β)$ in the regime of $n,k\to\infty$ with a fixed ratio ${n\over k}= ρ$. This is done by developing a general criterion for existence of graph-homomorphism based on the semi-definite relaxation of the independence number of a graph (known as the Schrijver's $θ$-function). The criterion is then evaluated using some known and some new results from coding theory concerning the $θ$-function of Hamming graphs. As an example, it is shown that if $β>1/2$ and $n\over k$ -- integer, the ${n\over k}$-fold repetition map achieving $α=β$ is asymptotically optimal.
Finally, constraints on configurations of points and hyperplanes in projective spaces over $\mathbb{F}_2$ are derived.
Bounding the Clique-Width of $H$-free Chordal Graphs
A graph is $H$-free if it has no induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$. Brandstädt, Engelfriet, Le and Lozin proved that the class of chordal graphs with independence number at most 3 has unbounded clique-width. Brandstädt, Le and Mosca erroneously claimed that the gem and the co-gem are the only two 1-vertex $P_4$-extensions $H$ for which the class of $H$-free chordal graphs has bounded clique-width. In fact we prove that bull-free chordal and co-chair-free chordal graphs have clique-width at most 3 and 4, respectively. In particular, we find four new classes of $H$-free chordal graphs of bounded clique-width. Our main result, obtained by combining new and known results, provides a classification of all but two stubborn cases, that is, with two potential exceptions we determine all graphs $H$ for which the class of $H$-free chordal graphs has bounded clique-width. We illustrate the usefulness of this classification for classifying other types of graph classes by proving that the class of $(2P_1+P_3,K_4)$-free graphs has bounded clique-width via a reduction to $K_4$-free chordal graphs. Finally, we give a complete classification of the (un)boundedness of clique-width of $H$-free weakly chordal graphs.

In this article we consider the relationship between vertex coloring and the immersion order. Specifically, a conjecture proposed by Abu-Khzam and Langston in 2003, which says that the complete graph with $t$ vertices can be immersed in any $t$-chromatic graph, is studied.
First, we present a general result about immersions and prove that the conjecture holds for graphs whose complement does not contain any induced cycle of length four and also for graphs having the property that every set of five vertices induces a subgraph with at least six edges.
Then, we study the class of all graphs with independence number less than three, which are graphs of interest for Hadwiger's Conjecture. We study such graphs for the immersion-analog. If Abu-Khzam and Langston's conjecture is true for this class of graphs, then an easy argument shows that every graph of independence number less than $3$ contains $K_{\left\lceil\frac{n}{2}\right\rceil}$ as an immersion. We show that the converse is also true. That is, if every graph with independence number less than $3$ contains an immersion of $K_{\left\lceil\frac{n}{2}\right\rceil}$, then Abu-Khzam and Langston's conjecture is true for this class of graphs. Furthermore, we show that every graph of independence number less than $3$ has an immersion of $K_{\left\lceil\frac{n}{3}\right\rceil}$.
Equimatchable factor-critical graphs and independence number 2
A graph is equimatchable if each of its matchings is a subset of a maximum matching. It is known that any 2-connected equimatchable graph is either bipartite, or factor-critical, and that these two classes are disjoint. This paper provides a description of k-connected equimatchable factor-critical graphs with respect to their k-cuts for $k\ge 3$. As our main result we prove that if G is a k-connected equimatchable factor-critical graph with at least 2k+3 vertices and a k-cut S, then G-S has exactly two components and both these components are close to being complete or complete bipartite. If both components of G-S additionally have at least 3 vertices and $k\ge 4$, then the graph has independence number 2. On the other hand, since every 2-connected odd graph with independence number 2 is equimatchable, we get the following result. For any $k\ge 4$ let G be a k-connected odd graph with at least 2k+3 vertices and a k-cut S such that G-S has two components with at least 3 vertices. Then G has independence number 2 if and only if it is equimatchable and factor-critical. Furthermore, we show that a 2-connected odd graph G with at least 4 vertices has independence number at most 2 if and only if G is equimatchable and factor-critical and G+e is equimatchable for every edge of the complement of G.
Bicoloring covers for graphs and hypergraphs
Let the {\it bicoloring cover number $χ^c(G)$} for a hypergraph $G(V,E)$ be the minimum number of bicolorings of vertices of $G$ such that every hyperedge $e\in E$ of $G$ is properly bicolored in at least one of the $χ^c(G)$ bicolorings. We investigate the relationship between $χ^c(G)$, matchings, hitting sets, $α(G)$(independence number) and $χ(G)$ (chromatic number). We design a factor $O(\frac{\log n}{\log \log n-\log \log \log n})$ approximation algorithm for computing a bicoloring cover. We define a new parameter for hypergraphs - "cover independence number $γ(G)$" and prove that $\log \frac{|V|}{γ(G)}$ and $\frac{|V|}{2γ(G)}$ are lower bounds for $χ^c(G)$ and $χ(G)$, respectively. We show that $χ^c(G)$ can be approximated by a polynomial time algorithm achieving approximation ratio $\frac{1}{1-t}$, if $γ(G)=n^t$, where $t<1$. We also construct a particular class of hypergraphs $G(V,E)$ called {\it cover friendly} hypergraphs where the ratio of $α(G)$ to $γ(G)$ can be arbitrarily large. We prove that for any $t\geq 1$, there exists a $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ such that the {\it clique number} $ω(G)=k$ and $χ^c(G) > t$. Let $m(k,x)$ denote the minimum number of hyperedges %in a $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ such that some $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$ with $m(k,x)$ hyperedges does not have a bicoloring cover of size $x$. We show that $ 2^{(k-1)x-1} < m(k,x) \leq x \cdot k^2 \cdot 2^{(k+1)x+2}$. Let the {\it dependency $d(G)$} of $G$ be the maximum number of hyperedge neighbors of any hyperedge in $G$. We propose an algorithm for computing a bicoloring cover of size $x$ for $G$ if $d(G) \leq(\frac{2^{x(k-1)}}{e}-1)$ using $nx+kx\frac{m}{d}$ random bits.

A $k$-uniform family of subsets of $[n]$ is intersecting if it does not contain a disjoint pair of sets. The study of intersecting families is central to extremal set theory, dating back to the seminal Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem of 1961 that bounds the size of the largest such families. A recent trend has been to investigate the structure of set families with few disjoint pairs. Friedgut and Regev proved a general removal lemma, showing that when $γn \le k \le (\tfrac12 - γ)n$, a set family with few disjoint pairs can be made intersecting by removing few sets.
We provide a simple proof of a removal lemma for large families, showing that families of size close to $\ell \binom{n-1}{k-1}$ with relatively few disjoint pairs must be close to a union of $\ell$ stars. Our lemma holds for a wide range of uniformities; in particular, when $\ell = 1$, the result holds for all $2 \le k < \frac{n}{2}$ and provides sharp quantitative estimates.
We use this removal lemma to settle a question of Bollobás, Narayanan and Raigorodskii regarding the independence number of random subgraphs of the Kneser graph $K(n,k)$. The Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem shows $α(K(n,k)) = \binom{n-1}{k-1}$. For some constant $c > 0$ and $k \le cn$, we determine the sharp threshold for when this equality holds for random subgraphs of $K(n,k)$, and provide strong bounds on the critical probability for $k \le \tfrac12 (n-3)$.
Maximal-clique partitions and the Roller Coaster Conjecture

A graph $G$ is {\em well-covered} if every maximal independent set has the same cardinality $q$. Let $i_k(G)$ denote the number of independent sets of cardinality $k$ in $G$. Brown, Dilcher, and Nowakowski conjectured that the independence sequence $(i_0(G), i_1(G), \ldots, i_q(G))$ was unimodal for any well-ordered graph $G$ with independence number $q$. Michael and Traves disproved this conjecture. Instead they posited the so-called ``Roller Coaster" Conjecture: that the terms \[
i_{\left\lceil\frac{q}2\right\rceil}(G), i_{\left\lceil\frac{q}2\right\rceil+1}(G), \ldots, i_q(G) \] could be in any specified order for some well-covered graph $G$ with independence number $q$. Michael and Traves proved the conjecture for $q<8$ and Matchett extended this to $q<12$.
In this paper, we prove the Roller Coaster Conjecture using a construction of graphs with a property related to that of having a maximal-clique partition. In particular, we show, for all pairs of integers $1\le k<q$ and positive integers $m$, that there is a well-covered graph $G$ with independence number $q$ for which every independent set of size $k+1$ is contained in a unique maximal independent set, but each independent set of size $k$ is contained in at least $m$ distinct independent sets.

On the stability of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem
Delete the edges of a Kneser graph independently of each other with some probability: for what probabilities is the independence number of this random graph equal to the independence number of the Kneser graph itself? We prove a sharp threshold result for this question in certain regimes. Since an independent set in the Kneser graph is the same as a uniform intersecting family, this gives us a random analogue of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem.

A triangle $T^{(r)}$ in an $r$-uniform hypergraph is a set of $r+1$ edges such that $r$ of them share a common $(r-1)$-set of vertices and the last edge contains the remaining vertex from each of the first $r$ edges. Our main result is that the random greedy triangle-free process on $n$ points terminates in an $r$-uniform hypergraph with independence number $O((n \log n)^{1/r})$. As a consequence, using recent results on independent sets in hypergraphs, the Ramsey number $r(T^{(r)}, K_s^{(r)})$ has order of magnitude $s^r/\log s$. This answers questions posed in~\cite{BFM, KMV} and generalizes the celebrated results of Ajtai-Komlós-Szemerédi~\cite{AKS} and Kim~\cite{K} to hypergraphs.

We show that a cubic graph $G$ of order $n$ has an induced $2$-regular subgraph of order at least a) $\frac{n-2}{4-\frac{4}{k}}$, if $G$ has no induced cycle of length more than $k$, b) $\frac{5n+6}{8}$, if $G$ has no induced cycle of length more than $4$, and $n>6$, and c) $\left(\frac{1}{4}+ε\right)n$, if the independence number of $G$ is at most $\left(\frac{3}{8}-ε\right)n$. To show the second result we give a precise structural description of cubic $4$-chordal graphs.
Independence and Matchings in $σ$-hypergraphs
Let $σ$ be a partition of the positive integer $r$. A $σ$-hypergraph $H=H(n,r,q|σ)$ is an $r$-uniform hypergraph on $nq$ vertices which are partitioned into $n$ classes $V_1, V_2, \ldots, V_n$ each containing $q$ vertices. An $r$-subset $K$ of vertices is an edge of the hypergraph if the partition of $r$ formed by the non-zero cardinalities $|K\cap V_i|, 1\leq i \leq n,$ is $σ$.
In earlier works we have considered colourings of the vertices of $H$ which are constrained such that any edge has at least $α$ and at most $β$ vertices of the same colour, and we have shown that interesting results can be obtained by varying $α, β$ and the parameters of $H$ appropriately. In this paper we continue to investigate the versatility of $σ$-hypergraphs by considering two classical problems: independence and matchings.
We first demonstrate an interesting link between the constrained colourings described above and the $k$-independence number of a hypergraph, that is, the largest cardinality of a subset of vertices of a hypergraph not containing $k+1$ vertices in the same edge. We also give an exact computation of the $k$-independence number of the $σ$-hypergraph $H$. We then present results on maximum, and sometimes perfect, matchings in $H$. These results often depend on divisibility relations between the parameters of $H$ and on the highest common factor of the parts of $σ$.

We consider large random graphs with prescribed degrees, such as those generated by the configuration model. In the regime where the empirical degree distribution approaches a limit $μ$ with finite mean, we establish the systematic convergence of a broad class of graph parameters that includes in particular the independence number, the maximum cut size and the log-partition function of the antiferromagnetic Ising and Potts models. The corresponding limits are shown to be Lipschitz and concave functions of $μ$. Our work extends the applicability of the celebrated interpolation method, introduced in the context of spin glasses, and recently related to the fascinating problem of right-convergence of sparse graphs.
Vizing's 2-factor Conjecture Involving Large Maximum Degree

Let $G$ be a connected simple graph of order $n$ and let $Δ(G)$ and $χ'(G)$ denote the maximum degree and chromatic index of $G$, respectively. Vizing proved that $χ'(G)=Δ(G)$ or $Δ(G)+1$. Following this result, $G$ is called $Δ$-critical if $χ'(G)=Δ(G)+1$ and $χ'(G-e)=Δ(G)$ for every $e\in E(G)$. In 1968, Vizing conjectured that if $G$ is an $n$-vertex $Δ$-critical graph, then the independence number $α(G)\le n/2$. Furthermore, he conjectured that, in fact, $G$ has a 2-factor. Luo and Zhao showed that if $G$ is an $n$-vertex $Δ$-critical graph with $Δ(G)\ge n/2$, then $α(G)\le n/2$. More recently, they showed that if $G$ is an $n$-vertex $Δ$-critical graph with $Δ(G)\ge 6n/7$, then $G$ has a hamiltonian cycle, and so $G$ has a 2-factor. In this paper, we show that if $G$ is an $n$-vertex $Δ$-critical graph with $Δ(G)\ge n/2$, then $G$ has a 2-factor.
