Enhancing the Erdős-Lovász Tihany Conjecture for graphs with independence number two
Let $s\ge2$ and $t\ge2$ be integers. A graph $G$ is $(s,t)$-\emph{splittable} if $V(G)$ can be partitioned into two sets $S$ and $T$ such that $χ(G[S])\geq s$ and $χ(G[T])\geq t$. The well-known Erdős-Lovász Tihany Conjecture from 1968 states that every graph $G$ whose chromatic number $χ(G)=s+t-1$ is more than its clique number $ω(G)$ is $(s,t)$-splittable. In this paper, we prove an enhanced version of the Erdős-Lovász Tihany Conjecture for graphs with independence number two. That is, for every graph $G$ with $χ(G)=s+t-1>ω(G)+1$ is $(s,t+1)$-splittable. There are examples showing that this result is best possible.
The Toughness of Kneser Graphs

The \textit{toughness} $t(G)$ of a graph $G$ is a measure of its connectivity that is closely related to Hamiltonicity. Brouwer proved the lower bound $t(G) > \ell / λ- 2$ on the toughness of any connected $\ell$-regular graph, where $ λ$ is the largest nontrivial eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix. He conjectured that this lower bound can be improved to $\ell / λ-1$ and this conjecture is still open. Brouwer also observed that many families of graphs (in particular, those achieving equality in the Hoffman ratio bound for the independence number) have toughness exactly $\ell / λ$. Cioabă and Wong confirmed Brouwer's observation for several families of graphs, including Kneser graphs $K(n,2)$ and their complements, with the exception of the Petersen graph $K(5,2)$. In this paper, we extend these results and determine the toughness of Kneser graphs $K(n,k)$ when $k\in \{3,4\}$ and $n\geq 2k+1$ as well as for $k\geq 5$ and sufficiently large $n$ (in terms of $k$). In all these cases, the toughness is attained by the complement of a maximum independent set and we conjecture that this is the case for any $k\geq 5$ and $n\geq 2k+1$.

The commuting graph $Δ(G)$ of a finite non-abelian group $G$ is a simple graph with vertex set $G$ and two distinct vertices $x, y$ are adjacent if $xy = yx$. In this paper, among some properties of $Δ(G)$, we investigate $Δ(SD_{8n})$ the commuting graph of the semidihedral group $SD_{8n}$. In this connection, we discuss various graph invariants of $Δ(SD_{8n})$ including minimum degree, vertex connectivity, independence number, matching number and detour properties. We also obtain the Laplacian spectrum, metric dimension and resolving polynomial of $Δ(SD_{8n})$.

A bi-hole of size $t$ in a bipartite graph $G$ is a copy of $K_{t,t}$ in the bipartite complement of $G$. Given an $n \times n$ bipartite graph $G$, let $β(G)$ be the largest $k$ for which $G$ has a bi-hole of size $k$. We prove that \[ β(G) \geq \left \lfloor \frac{1}{2} \cdot \sum_{v \in V(G)} \frac{1}{d(v)+1} \right \rfloor. \] Furthermore, we prove the following generalization of the result above. Given an $n \times n$ bipartite graph $G$, Let $β_d(G)$ be the largest $k$ for which $G$ has a $k \times k$ $d$-degenerate subgraph. We prove that \[ β_d(G) \geq \left \lfloor \frac{1}{2} \cdot \sum_{v \in V(G)} \min\left(1,\frac{d+1}{d(v)+1}\right) \right \rfloor. \] Notice that $β_0(G) = β(G)$.

The independence number, coloring number and related parameters are investigated in the setting of oriented hypergraphs using the spectrum of the normalized Laplace operator. For the independence number, both an inertia--like bound and a ratio--like bound are shown. A Sandwich Theorem involving the clique number, the vector chromatic number and the coloring number is proved, as well as a lower bound for the vector chromatic number in terms of the smallest and the largest eigenvalue of the normalized Laplacian. In addition, spectral partition numbers are studied in relation to the coloring number.
On graphs with some normalized Laplacian eigenvalue of extremal multiplicity
Let $G$ be a connected simple graph on $n$ vertices. Let $\mathcal{L}(G)$ be the normalized Laplacian matrix of $G$ and $ρ_{n-1}(G)$ be the second least eigenvalue of $\mathcal{L}(G)$. Denote by $ν(G)$ the independence number of $G$. Recently, the paper [Characterization of graphs with some normalized Laplacian eigenvalue of multiplicity $n-3$, arXiv:1912.13227] discussed the graphs with some normalized Laplacian eigenvalue of multiplicity $n-3$. However, there is one remaining case (graphs with $ρ_{n-1}(G)\neq 1$ and $ν(G)= 2$) not considered. In this paper, we focus on cographs and graphs with diameter 3 to investigate the graphs with some normalized Laplacian eigenvalue of multiplicity $n-3$.
The Chromatic Number of Dense Random Block Graphs
The chromatic number $χ(G)$ of a graph $G$, that is, the smallest number of colors required to color the vertices of $G$ so that no two adjacent vertices are assigned the same color, is a classic and extensively studied parameter. Here we consider the case where $G$ is a random block graph, also known as the stochastic block model. The vertex set is partitioned into $k\in\mathbb{N}$ parts $V_1, \dotsc, V_k$, and for each $1 \le i\le j\le k$, two vertices $u \in V_i, v\in V_j$ are connected by an edge with some probability $p_{ij} \in (0,1)$ independently. Our main result pins down the typical asymptotic value of $χ(G)$ and establishes the distribution of the sizes of the color classes in optimal colorings. We discover that in contrast to the case of a binomial random graph $G(n,p)$, that corresponds to $k=1$ in our model, where the average size of a color class in an (almost) optimal coloring essentially coincides with the independence number, the block model reveals a more diverse picture: the "average" class in an optimal coloring is a convex combination of several types of independent sets that vary in total size as well as in the size of their intersection with each $V_i$, $1\le i \le k$.

The Birkhoff graph $\mathcal{B}_n$ is the Cayley graph of the symmetric group $S_n$, where two permutations are adjacent if they differ by a single cycle. Our main result is a tighter upper bound on the independence number $α(\mathcal{B}_n)$ of $\mathcal{B}_n$, namely, we show that $α(\mathcal{B}_n) \le O(n!/1.97^n)$ improving on the previous known bound of $α(\mathcal{B}_n) \le O(n!/\sqrt{2}^{n})$ by [Kane-Lovett-Rao, FOCS 2017]. Our approach combines a higher-order version of their representation theoretic techniques with linear programming. With an explicit construction, we also improve their lower bound on $α(\mathcal{B}_n)$ by a factor of $n/2$. This construction is based on a proper coloring of $\mathcal{B}_n$, which also gives an upper bound on the chromatic number $χ(\mathcal{B}_n)$ of $\mathcal{B}_n$. Via known connections, the upper bound on $α(\mathcal{B}_n)$ implies alphabet size lower bounds for a family of maximally recoverable codes on grid-like topologies.
Large independent sets from local considerations
The following natural problem was raised independently by Erdős-Hajnal and Linial-Rabinovich in the late 80's. How large must the independence number $α(G)$ of a graph $G$ be whose every $m$ vertices contain an independent set of size $r$? In this paper we discuss new methods to attack this problem. The first new approach, based on bounding Ramsey numbers of certain graphs, allows us to improve previously best lower bounds due to Linial-Rabinovich, Erdős-Hajnal and Alon-Sudakov. As an example, we prove that any $n$-vertex graph $G$ having an independent set of size $3$ among every $7$ vertices has $α(G) \ge Ω(n^{5/12})$. This confirms a conjecture of Erdős and Hajnal that $α(G)$ should be at least $n^{1/3+\varepsilon}$ and brings the exponent half-way to the best possible value of $1/2$. Our second approach deals with upper bounds. It relies on a reduction of the original question to the following natural extremal problem. What is the minimum possible value of the $2$-density of a graph on $m$ vertices having no independent set of size $r$? This allows us to improve previous upper bounds due to Linial-Rabinovich, Krivelevich and Kostochka-Jancey. As part of our arguments we link the problem of Erdős-Hajnal and Linial-Rabinovich and our new extremal $2$-density problem to a number of other well-studied questions. This leads to many interesting directions for future research.

A subgraph H= (V, F) of a graph G= (V,E) is non-separating if G-F, that is, the graph obtained from G by deleting the edges in F, is connected. Analogously we say that a subdigraph X= (V,B) of a digraph D= (V,A) is non-separating if D-B is strongly connected. We study non-separating spanning trees and out-branchings in digraphs of independence number 2. Our main results are that every 2-arc-strong digraph D of independence number alpha(D) = 2 and minimum in-degree at least 5 and every 2-arc-strong oriented graph with alpha(D) = 2 and minimum in-degree at least 3 has a non-separating out-branching and minimum in-degree 2 is not enough. We also prove a number of other results, including that every 2-arc-strong digraph D with alpha(D)<=2 and at least 14 vertices has a non-separating spanning tree and that every graph G with delta(G)>=4 and alpha(G) = 2 has a non-separating hamiltonian path.

In the random geometric graph $G(n,r_n)$, $n$ vertices are placed randomly in Euclidean $d$-space and edges are added between any pair of vertices distant at most $r_n$ from each other. We establish strong laws of large numbers (LLNs) for a large class of graph parameters, evaluated for $G(n,r_n)$ in the thermodynamic limit with $nr_n^d =$ const., and also in the dense limit with $n r_n^d \to \infty$, $r_n \to 0$. Examples include domination number, independence number, clique-covering number, eternal domination number and triangle packing number. The general theory is based on certain subadditivity and superadditivity properties, and also yields LLNs for other functionals such as the minimum weight for the travelling salesman, spanning tree, matching, bipartite matching and bipartite travelling salesman problems, for a general class of weight functions with at most polynomial growth of order $d-\varepsilon$, under thermodynamic scaling of the distance parameter.
Proper divisor graph of a positive integer
The proper divisor graph $Υ_n$ of a positive integer $n$ is the simple graph whose vertices are the proper divisors of $n$, and in which two distinct vertices $u, v$ are adjacent if and only if $n$ divides $uv$. The graph $Υ_n$ plays an important role in the study of the zero divisor graph of the ring $\mathbb{Z}_n$. In this paper, we study some graph theoretic properties of $Υ_n$ and determine the graph parameters such as clique number, chromatic number, chromatic index, independence number, matching number, domination number, vertex and edge covering numbers of $Υ_n$. We also determine the automorphism group of $Υ_n$.

In this paper, we prove a collection of results on graphical indices. We determine the extremal graphs attaining the maximal generalized Wiener index (e.g. the hyper-Wiener index) among all graphs with given matching number or independence number. This generalizes some work of Dankelmann, as well as some work of Chung. We also show alternative proofs for two recents results on maximizing the Wiener index and external Wiener index by deriving it from earlier results. We end with proving two conjectures. We prove that the maximum for the difference of the Wiener index and the eccentricity is attained by the path if the order $n$ is at least $9$ and that the maximum weighted Szeged index of graphs of given order is attained by the balanced complete bipartite graphs.

We study the kernelization complexity of structural parameterizations of the Vertex Cover problem. Here, the goal is to find a polynomial-time preprocessing algorithm that can reduce any instance $(G,k)$ of the Vertex Cover problem to an equivalent one, whose size is polynomial in the size of a pre-determined complexity parameter of $G$. A long line of previous research deals with parameterizations based on the number of vertex deletions needed to reduce $G$ to a member of a simple graph class $\mathcal{F}$, such as forests, graphs of bounded tree-depth, and graphs of maximum degree two. We set out to find the most general graph classes $\mathcal{F}$ for which Vertex Cover parameterized by the vertex-deletion distance of the input graph to $\mathcal{F}$, admits a polynomial kernelization. We give a complete characterization of the minor-closed graph families $\mathcal{F}$ for which such a kernelization exists. We introduce a new graph parameter called bridge-depth, and prove that a polynomial kernelization exists if and only if $\mathcal{F}$ has bounded bridge-depth. The proof is based on an interesting connection between bridge-depth and the size of minimal blocking sets in graphs, which are vertex sets whose removal decreases the independence number.

The Lescure-Meyniel conjecture is the analogue of Hadwiger's conjecture for the immersion order. It states that every graph $G$ contains the complete graph $K_{χ(G)}$ as an immersion, and like its minor-order counterpart it is open even for graphs with independence number 2. We show that every graph $G$ with independence number $α(G)\ge 2$ and no hole of length between $4$ and $2α(G)$ satisfies this conjecture. In particular, every $C_4$-free graph $G$ with $α(G)= 2$ satisfies the Lescure-Meyniel conjecture. We give another generalisation of this corollary, as follows. Let $G$ and $H$ be graphs with independence number at most 2, such that $|V(H)|\le 4$. If $G$ is $H$-free, then $G$ satisfies the Lescure-Meyniel conjecture.

A connected graph is called a bi-block graph if each of its blocks is a complete bipartite graph. Let $\mathcal{B}(\mathbf{k}, α)$ be the class of bi-block graph on $\mathbf{k}$ vertices with given independence number $α$. It is easy to see that every bi-block graph is a bipartite graph. For a bipartite graph $G$ on $\mathbf{k}$ vertices, the independence number $α(G)$ satisfies $\ceil*{\frac{\mathbf{k}}{2}} \leq α(G) \leq \mathbf{k}-1$. In this article, we prove that the maximum spectral radius $ρ(G)$ among all graphs $G$ in $\mathcal{B}(\mathbf{k}, α)$, is uniquely attained for the complete bipartite graph $K_{α, \mathbf{k}-α}$.

Given a large graph $H$, does the binomial random graph $G(n,p)$ contain a copy of $H$ as an induced subgraph with high probability? This classical question has been studied extensively for various graphs $H$, going back to the study of the independence number of $G(n,p)$ by Erdős and Bollobás, and Matula in 1976. In this paper we prove an asymptotically best possible result for induced matchings by showing that if $C/n\le p \le 0.99$ for some large constant $C$, then $G(n,p)$ contains an induced matching of order approximately $2\log_q(np)$, where $q= \frac{1}{1-p}$.

An edge-colored connected graph $G$ is properly connected if between every pair of distinct vertices, there exists a path that no two adjacent edges have a same color. Fujita (2019) introduced the optimal proper connection number ${\mathrm{pc}_{\mathrm{opt}}}(G)$ for a monochromatic connected graph $G$, to make a connected graph properly connected efficiently. More precisely, ${\mathrm{pc}_{\mathrm{opt}}}(G)$ is the smallest integer $p+q$ when one converts a given monochromatic graph $G$ into a properly connected graph by recoloring $p$ edges with $q$ colors.
In this paper, we show that ${\mathrm{pc}_{\mathrm{opt}}}(G)$ has an upper bound in terms of the independence number $α(G)$. Namely, we prove that for a connected graph $G$, ${\mathrm{pc}_{\mathrm{opt}}}(G)\le \frac{5α(G)-1}{2}$. Moreoevr, for the case $α(G)\leq 3$, we improve the upper bound to $4$, which is tight.

We prove that every digraph of independence number at most 2 and arc-connectivity at least 2 has an out-branching $B^+$ and an in-branching $B^-$ which are arc-disjoint (we call such branchings good pair).
This is best possible in terms of the arc-connectivity as there are infinitely many strong digraphs with independence number 2 and arbitrarily high minimum in-and out-degrees that have good no pair. The result settles a conjecture by Thomassen for digraphs of independence number 2. We prove that every digraph on at most 6 vertices and arc-connectivity at least 2 has a good pair and give an example of a 2-arc-strong digraph $D$ on 10 vertices with independence number 4 that has no good pair. We also show that there are infinitely many digraphs with independence number 7 and arc-connectivity 2 that have no good pair. Finally we pose a number of open problems.
