Syzygies of Oriented Matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We construct minimal cellular resolutions of squarefree monomial ideals arising from hyperplane arrangements, matroids and oriented matroids. These are Stanley-Reisner ideals of complexes of independent sets, and of triangulations of Lawrence matroid polytopes. Our resolution provides a cellular realization of Stanley's formula for their Betti numbers. For unimodular matroids our resolutions are related to hyperplane arrangements on tori, and we recover the resolutions constructed by Bayer, Popescu and Sturmfels. We resolve the combinatorial problems posed in their paper by computing Mobius invariants of graphic and cographic arrangements in terms of Hermite polynomials.

Combinatorial and algebraic structure in Orlik-Solomon algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Orlik-Solomon algebra ${\cal A}(G)$ of a matroid $G$ is the free exterior algebra on the points, modulo the ideal generated by the circuit boundaries. On one hand, this algebra is a homotopy invariant of the complement of any complex hyperplane arrangement realizing $G$. On the other hand, some features of the matroid $G$ are reflected in the algebraic structure of ${\cal A}(G)$. In this mostly expository article, we describe recent developments in the construction of algebraic invariants of ${\cal A}(G)$. We develop a categorical framework for the statement and proof of recently discovered isomorphism theorems which suggests a possible setting for classification theorems. Several specific open problems are formulated.
Lie algebras associated to fiber-type arrangements
Published in Int. Math. Res. Not. 2003, no. 29, 1591-1621 • Search Publication
Given a hyperplane arrangement in a complex vector space of dimension n, there is a natural associated arrangement of codimension k subspaces in a complex vector space of dimension k*n. Topological invariants of the complement of this subspace arrangement are related to those of the complement of the original hyperplane arrangement. In particular, if the hyperplane arrangement is fiber-type, then, apart from grading, the Lie algebra obtained from the descending central series for the fundamental group of the complement of the hyperplane arrangement is isomorphic to the Lie algebra of primitive elements in the homology of the loop space for the complement of the associated subspace arrangement. Furthermore, this last Lie algebra is given by the homotopy groups modulo torsion of the loop space of the complement of the subspace arrangement. Looping further yields an associated Poisson algebra, and generalizations of the "universal infinitesimal Poisson braid relations."

Higher homotopy groups of complements of complex hyperplane arrangements
Published in Advances in Math. 165 (2002), 71-100 • View Publication • BIB
We generalize results of Hattori on the topology of complements of hyperplane arrangements, from the class of generic arrangements, to the much broader class of hypersolvable arrangements. We show that the higher homotopy groups of the complement vanish in a certain combinatorially determined range, and we give an explicit Zπ_1-module presentation of π_p, the first non-vanishing higher homotopy group. We also give a combinatorial formula for the π_1-coinvariants of π_p. For affine line arrangements whose cones are hypersolvable, we provide a minimal resolution of π_2, and study some of the properties of this module. For graphic arrangements associated to graphs with no 3-cycles, we obtain information on π_2, directly from the graph. The π_1-coinvariants of π_2 may distinguish the homotopy 2-types of arrangement complements with the same π_1, and the same Betti numbers in low degrees.

Parallel connections and bundles of arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let \A be a complex hyperplane arrangement, and let $X$ be a modular element of arbitrary rank in the intersection lattice of \A. We show that projection along $X$ restricts to a fiber bundle projection of the complement of \A to the complement of the localization $\A_X$ of \A at $X$. The fiber is the decone of a realization of the complete principal truncation of the underlying matroid of \A along the flat corresponding to $X$. This result gives a topological realization of results of Stanley, Brylawsky, and Terao on modular factorization. We show that (generalized) parallel connection of matroids corresponds to pullback of fiber bundles, clarifying the notion that all examples of diffeomorphisms of complements of inequivalent arrangements result from the triviality of the restriction of the Hopf bundle to the complement of a hyperplane. The modular fibration result also yields a new method for identifying $K(π,1)$ arrangements of rank greater than three. We identify a new families of $K(π,1)$ arrangements, providing more evidence for the conjecture that factored arrangements of arbitrary rank are $K(π,1)$.

Syzygies of Unimodular Lawrence Ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
Infinite hyperplane arrangements whose vertices form a lattice are studied from the point of view of commutative algebra. The quotient of such an arrangement modulo the lattice action represents the minimal free resolution of the associated binomial ideal, which defines a toric subvariety in a product of projective lines. Connections to graphic arrangements and to Beilinson's spectral sequence are explored.

Translated tori in the characteristic varieties of complex hyperplane arrangements
Published in Topology and Appl. 118 (2002), 209-223 • View Publication • BIB
We give examples of complex hyperplane arrangements for which the top characteristic variety contains positive-dimensional irreducible components that do not pass through the origin of the character torus. These examples answer several questions of Libgober and Yuzvinsky. As an application, we exhibit a pair of arrangements for which the resonance varieties of the Orlik-Solomon algebra are (abstractly) isomorphic, yet whose characteristic varieties are not isomorphic. The difference comes from translated components, which are not detected by the tangent cone at the origin.

Hyperplane Arrangement Cohomology and Monomials in the Exterior Algebra
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that if X is the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement, then the homology of X has linear free resolution as a module over the exterior algebra on the first cohomology of X. We study invariants of X that can be deduced from this resolution. A key ingredient is a result of Aramova, Avramov, and Herzog [2000] on resolutions of monomial ideals in the exterior algebra. We give a new conceptual proof of this result.

Monodromy of fiber-type arrangements and orbit configuration spaces
Published in Forum Math. 13 (2001), 505-530 • View Publication • BIB
We prove similar theorems concerning the structure of bundles involving complements of fiber-type hyperplane arrangements and orbit configuration spaces. These results facilitate analysis of the fundamental groups of these spaces, which may be viewed as generalizations of the Artin pure braid group. In particular, we resolve two disparate conjectures. We show that the Whitehead group of the fundamental group of the complement of a fiber-type arrangement is trivial, as conjectured by Aravinda, Farrell, and Rouchon. For the orbit configuration space corresponding to the natural action of a finite cyclic group on the punctured plane, we determine the structure of the Lie algebra associated to the lower central series of the fundamental group. Our results show that this Lie algebra is isomorphic to the module of primitives in the homology of the loop space of a related orbit configuration space, as conjectured by Xicotencatl.

Arrangements and local systems
Published in Math. Res. Lett. 7 (2000), 299-316 • View Publication • BIB
We use stratified Morse theory to construct a complex to compute the cohomology of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement with coefficients in a complex rank one local system. The linearization of this complex is shown to be the Orlik-Solomon algebra with the connection operator. Using this result, we establish the relationship between the cohomology support loci of the complement and the resonance varieties of the Orlik-Solomon algebra for any arrangement, and show that the latter are unions of subspace arrangements in general, resolving a conjecture of Falk. We also obtain lower bounds for the local system Betti numbers in terms of those of the Orlik-Solomon algebra, recovering a result of Libgober and Yuzvinsky. For certain local systems, our results provide new combinatorial upper bounds on the local system Betti numbers. These upper bounds enable us to prove that in non-resonant systems the cohomology is concentrated in the top dimension, without using resolution of singularities.

Semisimple orbits of Lie algebras and card shuffling on Coxeter groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Random walk on the chambers of hyperplanes arrangements is used to define a family of card shuffling measures $H_{W,x}$ for a finite Coxeter group W and real $x \neq 0$. By algebraic group theory, there is a map from the semisimple orbits of the adjoint action of a finite group of Lie type on its Lie algebra to the conjugacy classes of the Weyl group. Choosing such a semisimple orbit uniformly at random thereby induces a probability measure on the conjugacy classes of the Weyl group. For types A, B, and the identity conjugacy class of W for all types, it is proved that for q very good, this measure on conjugacy classes is equal to the measure arising from $H_{W,q}$.

Why the characteristic polynomial factors
Published in Bull. Amer. Math. Soc. 36 (1999), 113-134 • View Publication • BIB
We survey three methods for proving that the characteristic polynomial of a finite lattice factors over the nonnegative integers and indicate how they have evolved recently. The first technique uses geometric ideas and is based on Zaslavsky's theory of signed graphs. The second approach is algebraic and employs results of Saito and Terao about free hyperplane arrangements. Finally, we consider a purely combinatorial theorem of Stanley about semimodular supersolvable lattices and its generalizations.

Algebras related to matroids represented in characteristic zero
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let k be a field of characteristic zero. We consider graded subalgebras A of k[x_1,...,x_m]/(x_1^2,...,x_m^2) generated by d linearly independant linear forms. Representations of matroids over k provide a natural description of the structure of these algebras. In return, the numerical properties of the Hilbert function of A yield some information about the Tutte polynomial of the corresponding matroid. Isomorphism classes of these algebras correspond to equivalence classes of hyperplane arrangements under the action of the general linear group.

Orlik-Solomon algebras and Tutte polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
The $OS$ algebra $A$ of a matroid $M$ is a graded algebra related to the Whitney homology of the lattice of flats of $M$. In case $M$ is the underlying matroid of a hyperplane arrangement \A in $\C^r$, $A$ is isomorphic to the cohomology algebra of the complement $\C^r\setminus \bigcup \A.$ Few examples are known of pairs of arrangements with non-isomorphic matroids but isomorphic $OS$ algebras. In all known examples, the Tutte polynomials are identical, and the complements are homotopy equivalent but not homeomorphic. We construct, for any given simple matroid $M_0$, a pair of infinite families of matroids $M_n$ and $M'_n$, $n\geq 1$, each containing $M_0$ as a submatroid, in which corresponding pairs have isomorphic $OS$ algebras. If the seed matroid $ M_0$ is connected, then $M_n$ and $M'_n$ have different Tutte polynomials. As a consequence of the construction, we obtain, for any $m$, $m$ different matroids with isomorphic $OS$ algebras. Suppose one is given a pair of central complex hyperplane arrangements $\A_0$ and $\A_1$. Let $§$ denote the arrangement consisting of the hyperplane $\{0\}$ in $\C^1$. We define the parallel connection $P(\A_0,\A_1)$, an arrangement realizing the parallel connection of the underlying matroids, and show that the direct sums $\A_0 \oplus \A_1$ and $§\oplus P(\A_0,\A_1)$ have diffeomorphic complements.

On the fundamental group of the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement
Published in Functional Analysis and its Applications Volume 45 (2011), Number 2, 137-148 • View Publication • BIB
We construct two combinatorially equivalent line arrangements in the complex projective plane such that the fundamental groups of their complements are not isomorphic. The proof uses a new invariant of the fundamental group of the complement to a line arrangement of a given combinatorial type with respect to isomorphisms inducing the canonical isomorphism of the first homology groups.

Descent algebras, hyperplane arrangements, and shuffling cards
Published • View Publication • BIB
Two notions of riffle shuffling on finite Coxeter groups are given: one using Solomon's descent algebra and another using random walk on chambers of hyperplane arrangements. These coincide for types $A$,$B$,$C$, $H_3$, and rank two groups. Both notions have the same, simple eigenvalues. The hyperplane definition is especially natural and satisfies a positivity property when $W$ is crystallographic and the relevant parameter is a good prime. The hyperplane viewpoint suggests interesting connections with Lie theory and leads to a notion of riffle shuffling for arbitrary real hyperplane arrangements and oriented matroids. Connections with Cellini's descent algebra are given.

Characteristic and Ehrhart polynomials
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 7 (1998), 115-126 • View Publication • BIB
Let A be a subspace arrangement and let chi(A,t) be the characteristic polynomial of its intersection lattice L(A). We show that if the subspaces in A are taken from L(B_n), where B_n is the type B Weyl arrangement, then chi(A,t) counts a certain set of lattice points. One can use this result to study the partial factorization of chi(A,t) over the integers and the coefficients of its expansion in various bases for the polynomial ring R[t]. Next we prove that the characteristic polynomial of any Weyl hyperplane arrangement can be expressed in terms of an Ehrhart quasi-polynomial for its affine Weyl chamber. Note that our first result deals with all subspace arrangements embedded in B_n while the second deals with all finite Weyl groups but only their hyperplane arrangements.

Deformations of Coxeter hyperplane arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
We investigate several hyperplane arrangements that can be viewed as deformations of Coxeter arrangements. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Linial and Stanley that the number of regions of the arrangement x_i - x_j = 1, 1 \leq i<j \leq n, is equal to the number of alternating trees on n+1 vertices. Remarkably, these numbers have several additional combinatorial interpretations in terms of binary trees, partially ordered sets, and tournaments. More generally, we give formulae for the number of regions and the Poincar'e polynomial of certain finite subarrangements of the affine Coxeter arrangement of type A_{n-1}. These formulae enable us to prove a "Riemann hypothesis" on the location of zeros of the Poincar'e polynomial. We also consider some generic deformations of Coxeter arrangements of type A_{n-1}.
