Proof of a bi-symmetric septuple equidistribution on ascent sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is well known since the seminal work by Bousquet-Mélou, Claesson, Dukes and Kitaev (2010) that certain refinements of the ascent sequences with respect to several natural statistics are in bijection with corresponding refinements of $({\bf2+2})$-free posets and permutations that avoid a bivincular pattern. Different multiply-refined enumerations of ascent sequences and other bijectively equivalent structures have subsequently been extensively studied by various authors. In this paper, our main contributions are 1. a bijective proof of a bi-symmetric septuple equidistribution of statistics on ascent sequences, involving the number of ascents (asc), the number of repeated entries (rep), the number of zeros (zero), the number of maximal entries (max), the number of right-to-left minima (rmin) and two auxiliary statistics; 2. a new transformation formula for non-terminating basic hypergeometric $_4φ_3$ series expanded as an analytic function in base $q$ around $q=1$, which is utilized to prove two (bi)-symmetric quadruple equidistributions on ascent sequences. A by-product of our findings includes the affirmation of a conjecture about the bi-symmetric equidistribution between the quadruples of Euler--Stirling statistics (asc, rep, zero, max) and (rep, asc, max, zero) on ascent sequences, that was motivated by a double Eulerian equidistribution due to Foata (1977) and recently proposed by Fu, Lin, Yan, Zhou and the first author (2018).

Eulerian series, zeta functions and the arithmetic of partitions
In this Ph.D. dissertation (2018, Emory University) we prove theorems at the intersection of the additive and multiplicative branches of number theory, bringing together ideas from partition theory, $q$-series, algebra, modular forms and analytic number theory. We present a natural multiplicative theory of integer partitions (which are usually considered in terms of addition), and explore new classes of partition-theoretic zeta functions and Dirichlet series -- as well as "Eulerian" $q$-hypergeometric series -- enjoying many interesting relations. We find a number of theorems of classical number theory and analysis arise as particular cases of extremely general combinatorial structure laws. Among our applications, we prove explicit formulas for the coefficients of the $q$-bracket of Bloch-Okounkov, a partition-theoretic operator from statistical physics related to quasi-modular forms; we prove partition formulas for arithmetic densities of certain subsets of the integers, giving $q$-series formulas to evaluate the Riemann zeta function; we study $q$-hypergeometric series related to quantum modular forms and the "strange" function of Kontsevich; and we show how Ramanujan's odd-order mock theta functions (and, more generally, the universal mock theta function $g_3$ of Gordon-McIntosh) arise from the reciprocal of the Jacobi triple product via the $q$-bracket operator, connecting also to unimodal sequences in combinatorics and quantum modular-like phenomena.

Divisibility results concerning truncated hypergeometric series
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, using the well-known Karlsson-Minton formula, we mainly establish two divisibility results concerning truncated hypergeometric series. Let $n>2$ and $q>0$ be integers with $2\mid n$ or $2\nmid q$. We show that $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{(q-\frac{p}{n})_k^n}{(1)_k^n}\equiv0\pmod{p^3} $$ and $$p^n\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{(1)_k^n}{(\frac{p}{n}-q+2)_k^n}\equiv0\pmod{p^3}$$ for any prime $p>\max\{n,(q-1)n+1\}$, where $(x)_k$ denotes the Pochhammer symbol defined by $$ (x)_k=\begin{cases}1,\quad &k=0,\\ x(x+1)\cdots(x+k-1),\quad &k>0.\end{cases}$$ Let $n\geq4$ be an even integer. Then for any prime $p$ with $p\equiv-1\pmod{n}$, the first congruence above implies that $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1} \frac{(\frac{1}{n})_k^n}{(1)_k^n}\equiv0\pmod{p^3}. $$ This confirms a recent conjecture of Guo.

Dwork-type supercongruences through a creative $q$-microscope
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A 178 (2021), Article 105362 • View Publication • BIB
We develop an analytical method to prove congruences of the type $$ \sum_{k=0}^{(p^r-1)/d}A_kz^k \equiv ω(z)\sum_{k=0}^{(p^{r-1}-1)/d}A_kz^{pk} \pmod{p^{mr}\mathbb Z_p[[z]]} \quad \text{for}\; r=1,2,\dots, $$ for primes $p>2$ and fixed integers $m,d\ge1$, where $f(z)=\sum_{k=0}^\infty A_kz^k$ is an "arithmetic" hypergeometric series. Such congruences for $m=d=1$ were introduced by Dwork in 1969 as a tool for $p$-adic analytical continuation of $f(z)$. Our proofs of several Dwork-type congruences corresponding to $m\ge2$ (in other words, supercongruences) are based on constructing and proving their suitable $q$-analogues, which in turn have their own right for existence and potential for a $q$-deformation of modular forms and of cohomology groups of algebraic varieties. Our method follows the principles of creative microscoping introduced by us to tackle $r=1$ instances of such congruences; it is the first method capable of establishing the supercongruences of this type for general $r$.

Based on some combinatorial identities arising from symbolic summation, we extend two supercongruences on partial sums of hypergeometric series, which were originally conjectured by Guo and Schlosser and recently confirmed by Jana and Kalita.

Proof of two supercongruences of truncated hypergeometric series ${}_4F_3$
Published in Acta Mathematica Sinica, English Series (2024) 40(4), 1015--1028 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we prove two supercongruences conjectured by Z.-W. Sun via the Wilf-Zeilberger method. One of them is, for any prime $p>3$, \begin{align*} \sum_{n=0}^{(p-1)/2}\frac{6n+1}{(-512)^n}\binom{2n}n^3&\equiv p\left(\frac{-2}p\right)+\frac{p^3}4\left(\frac2p\right)E_{p-3}\pmod{p^4}, \end{align*} where $\left(\frac{\cdot}p\right)$ stands for the Legendre symbol, and $E_{n}$ is the $n$-th Euler number.

Independence Polynomials and Hypergeometric Series
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $Γ$ be a simple graph and $I_Γ(x)$ its multivariate independence polynomial. The main result of this paper is the characterization of chordal graphs as the only $Γ$ for which the power series expansion of $I_Γ^{-1}(x)$ is Horn hypergeometric.

An extension of the Andrews-Warnaar partial theta function identity
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, by applying a range of classic summation and transformation formulas for basic hypergeometric series, we obtain a three-term identity for partial theta functions. It extends the Andrews-Warnaar partial theta function identity, and also unifies several results on partial theta functions due to Ramanujan, Lovejoy and Kim. We also establish a two-term version of the extension, which can be used to derive identities for partial and false theta functions. Finally, we present a relation between the big $q$-Jacobi polynomials and the Andrews-Warnaar partial theta function identity.

Several transformation formulas involving bilateral basic hypergeometric series
In terms of the analytic continuation method, we prove three transformation formulas involving bilateral basic hypergeometric series. One of them is equivalent to Jouhet's result involving two $_8ψ_8$ series and two $_8φ_7$ series.

Rationally weighted Hurwitz numbers, Meijer $G$-functions and matrix integrals
Published in J. Math. Phys. 60, 103504 (2019) • View Publication • BIB
The quantum spectral curve equation associated to KP $τ$-functions of hypergeometric type serving as generating functions for rationally weighted Hurwitz numbers is solved by generalized hypergeometric series. The basis elements spanning the corresponding Sato Grassmannian element are shown to be Meijer $G$-functions, or their asymptotic series. Using their Mellin integral representation the $τ$-function, evaluated at the trace invariants of an externally coupled matrix, is expressed as a matrix integral.

Transformation and summation formulas for basic hypergeometric series associated with the circumference ratio
In terms of the difference operators, we establish several curious transformation and summation formulas for basic hypergeometric series. When the parameters are specified, they produce $q$-analogues of Ramanujan's three series for 1/$π$ and other eleven nice $π$-formulas. Meanwhile, $q$-analogues of three beautiful series for $ζ(3)$ are also given in the same way.

Some new $q$-congruences for truncated basic hypergeometric series: even powers
Published in Results Math. (2020) 75: 1 • View Publication • BIB
We provide several new $q$-congruences for truncated basic hypergeometric series with the base being an even power of $q$. Our results mainly concern congruences modulo the square or the cube of a cyclotomic polynomial and complement corresponding ones of an earlier paper containing $q$-congruences for truncated basic hypergeometric series with the base being an odd power of $q$. We also give a number of related conjectures including $q$-congruences modulo the fifth power of a cyclotomic polynomial and a congruence for a truncated ordinary hypergeometric series modulo the seventh power of a prime greater than 3.

On Generalizations of the Newton-Raphson-Simpson Method
We present generalizations of the Newton-Raphson-Simpson method. Specifically, for a positive integer $m$ and the sequence of coefficients of a Taylor series of a function $f(z)$, we define an algorithm we denote by NRS($m$) which is a way to evaluate, in our terminology, a sum of $m$ formal zeros of $f(z)$. We prove that NRS(1) yields the familiar iterations of the Newton-Raphson-Simpson method. We also prove that NRS($m$) is way to evaluate certain $\mathscr{A}$-hypergeometric series defined by Sturmfels. In order to define these algorithms, we make use of combinatorial objects which we call trees with negative vertex degree.

The colored Jones polynomial and Kontsevich-Zagier series for double twist knots, II
Published in New York Journal of Mathematics 25 (2019), 1312-1349 • Search Publication
Let $K_{(m,p)}$ denote the family of double twist knots where $2m-1$ and $2p$ are non-zero integers denoting the number of half-twists in each region. Using a result of Takata, we prove a formula for the colored Jones polynomial of $K_{(-m,-p)}$ and $K_{(-m,p)}$. The latter case leads to new families of $q$-hypergeometric series generalizing the Kontsevich-Zagier series. We also use Bailey pairs and formulas of Walsh to find cyclotomic-like expansions for the colored Jones polynomials of $K_{(m,p)}$ and $K_{(m,-p)}$.

Some new $q$-congruences for truncated basic hypergeometric series
Published in Symmetry 2019, 11(2), 268 • View Publication • BIB
We provide several new $q$-congruences for truncated basic hypergeometric series, mostly of arbitrary order. Our results include congruences modulo the square or the cube of a cyclotomic polynomial, and in some instances, parametric generalizations thereof. These are established by a variety of techniques including polynomial argument, creative microscoping (a method recently introduced by the first author in collaboration with Zudilin), Andrews' multiseries generalization of the Watson transformation, and induction. We also give a number of related conjectures including congruences modulo the fourth power of a cyclotomic polynomial.

Factors of some truncated basic hypergeometric series
We prove that certain basic hypergeometric series truncated at $k=n-1$ have the factor $Φ_n(q)^2$, where $Φ_n(q)$ is the $n$-th cyclotomic polynomial. This confirms two recent conjectures of the author and Zudilin. We also put forward some conjectures on $q$-congruences modulo $Φ_n(q)^2$.

On a $q$-deformation of modular forms
Published in J. Math. Anal. Appl. 475:2 (2019), 1636--1646 • View Publication • BIB
There are many instances known when the Fourier coefficients of modular forms are congruent to partial sums of hypergeometric series. In our previous work arXiv:1803.01830, such partial sums are related to the radial asymptotics of infinite $q$-hypergeometric sums at roots of unity. Here we combine the two features to construct a hypergeometric $q$-deformation of two CM modular forms of weight 3 and discuss the corresponding $q$-congruences.
