We study Linial-Meshulam random 2-complexes, which are two-dimensional analogues of Erdős-Rényi random graphs. We find the threshold for simple connectivity to be p = n^{-1/2}. This is in contrast to the threshold for vanishing of the first homology group, which was shown earlier by Linial and Meshulam to be p = 2 log(n)/n. We use a variant of Gromov's local-to-global theorem for linear isoperimetric inequalities to show that when p = O(n^{-1/2 -ε}) the fundamental group is word hyperbolic. Along the way we classify the homotopy types of sparse 2-dimensional simplicial complexes and establish isoperimetric inequalities for such complexes. These intermediate results do not involve randomness and may be of independent interest.
The Discrete Fundamental Group of the Order Complex of $B_n$

A few years ago Kramer and Laubenbacher introduced a discrete notion of homotopy for simplicial complexes. In this paper, we compute the discrete fundamental group of the order complex of the Boolean lattice. As it turns out, it is equivalent to computing the discrete homotopy group of the 1-skeleton of the permutahedron. To compute this group we introduce combinatorial techniques that we believe will be helpful in computing discrete fundamental groups of other polytopes. More precisely, we use the language of words, over the alphabet of simple transpositions, to obtain conditions that are necessary and sufficient to characterize the equivalence classes of cycles. The proof requires only simple combinatorial arguments. As a corollary, we also obtain a combinatorial proof of the fact that the first Betti number of the complement of the 3-equal arrangement is equal to $2^{n-3}(n^2-5n+8)-1.$ This formula was originally obtained by Björner and Welker in 1995.

Combinatorial fiber bundles and fragmentation of a fiberwise PL-homeomorphism

With a compact PL manifold X we associate a category T(X). The objects of T(X) are all combinatorial manifolds of type X, and morphisms are combinatorial assemblies. We prove that the homotopy equivalence BT (X) \approx BPL(X) holds, where PL(X) is the simplicial group of PL-homeomorphisms. Thus the space BT(X) is a canonical countable (as a CW-complex) model of BPL(X). As a result, we obtain functorial pure combinatorial models for PL fiber bundles with fiber X and a PL polyhedron B as the base. Such a model looks like a T(X)-coloring of some triangulation K of B. The vertices of K are colored by objects of T(X) and the arcs are colored by morphisms in such a way that the diagram arising from the 2-skeleton of K is commutative. Comparing with the classical results of geometric topology, we obtain combinatorial models of the real Grassmannian in small dimensions: BT(S^{n-1}) \approx BO(n) for n=1,2,3,4. The result is proved in a sequence of results on similar models of B\PL(X). Special attention is paid to the main noncompact case X=R^n and to the tangent bundle and Gauss functor of a combinatorial manifold. The trick that makes the proof possible is a collection of lemmas on "fragmentation of a fiberwise homeomorphism", a generalization of the folklore lemma on fragmentation of an isotopy.
Convex Hull Realizations of the Multiplihedra

We present a simple algorithm for determining the extremal points in Euclidean space whose convex hull is the nth polytope in the sequence known as the multiplihedra. This answers the open question of whether the multiplihedra could be realized as convex polytopes. We use this realization to unite the approach to A_n-maps of Iwase and Mimura to that of Boardman and Vogt. We include a review of the appearance of the nth multiplihedron for various n in the studies of higher homotopy commutativity, (weak) n-categories, A_infinity-categories, deformation theory, and moduli spaces. We also include suggestions for the use of our realizations in some of these areas as well as in related studies, including enriched category theory and the graph associahedra.
The absolute order on the symmetric group, constructible partially ordered sets and Cohen-Macaulay complexes

The absolute order is a natural partial order on a Coxeter group W. It can be viewed as an analogue of the weak order on W in which the role of the generating set of simple reflections in W is played by the set of all reflections in W. By use of a notion of constructibility for partially ordered sets, it is proved that the absolute order on the symmetric group is homotopy Cohen-Macaulay. This answers in part a question raised by V. Reiner and the first author. The Euler characteristic of the order complex of the proper part of the absolute order on the symmetric group is also computed.
Homotopy groups of Hom complexes of graphs

The notion of $\times$-homotopy from \cite{DocHom} is investigated in the context of the category of pointed graphs. The main result is a long exact sequence that relates the higher homotopy groups of the space $\Hom_*(G,H)$ with the homotopy groups of $\Hom_*(G,H^I)$. Here $\Hom_*(G,H)$ is a space which parametrizes pointed graph maps from $G$ to $H$ (a pointed version of the usual $\Hom$ complex), and $H^I$ is the graph of based paths in $H$. As a corollary it is shown that $π_i \big(\Hom_*(G,H) \big) \cong [G,Ω^i H]_{\times}$, where $ΩH$ is the graph of based closed paths in $H$ and $[G,K]_{\times}$ is the set of $\times$-homotopy classes of pointed graph maps from $G$ to $K$. This is similar in spirit to the results of \cite{BBLL}, where the authors seek a space whose homotopy groups encode a similarly defined homotopy theory for graphs. The categorical connections to those constructions are discussed.

Let ${\mathcal S}(\R)$ be an o-minimal structure over $\R$, $T \subset \R^{k_1+k_2+\ell}$ a closed definable set, and $$ \displaylines{π_1: \R^{k_1+k_2+\ell}\to \R^{k_1 + k_2}, π_2: \R^{k_1+k_2+\ell}\to \R^{\ell}, \ π_3: \R^{k_1 + k_2} \to \R^{k_2}} $$ the projection maps.
For any collection ${\mathcal A} = \{A_1,...,A_n\}$ of subsets of $\R^{k_1+k_2}$, and $\z \in \R^{k_2}$, let $\A_\z$ denote the collection of subsets of $\R^{k_1}$, $\{A_{1,\z},..., A_{n,\z}\}$, where $A_{i,\z} = A_i \cap π_3^{-1}(\z), 1 \leq i \leq n$. We prove that there exists a constant $C = C(T) > 0,$ such that for any family ${\mathcal A} = \{A_1,...,A_n\}$ of definable sets, where each $A_i = π_1(T \cap π_2^{-1}(\y_i))$, for some $\y_i \in \R^{\ell}$, the number of distinct stable homotopy types of $\A_\z, \z \in \R^{k_2}$, is bounded by $ \displaystyle{C \cdot n^{(k_1+1)k_2},} $ while the number of distinct homotopy types is bounded by $ \displaystyle{C \cdot n^{(k_1+3)k_2}.} $ This generalizes to the general o-minimal setting, bounds of the same type proved in \cite{BV} for semi-algebraic and semi-Pfaffian families. One main technical tool used in the proof of the above results, is a topological comparison theorem which might be of independent interest in the study of arrangements.
On Sequentially Cohen-Macaulay Complexes and Posets
The classes of sequentially Cohen-Macaulay and sequentially homotopy Cohen-Macaulay complexes and posets are studied. First, some different versions of the definitions are discussed and the homotopy type is determined. Second, it is shown how various constructions, such as join, product and rank-selection preserve these properties. Third, a characterization of sequential Cohen-Macaulayness for posets is given. Finally, in an appendix we outline connections with ring-theory and survey some uses of sequential Cohen-Macaulayness in commutative algebra.

It is shown that if T is a connected nontrivial graph and X is an arbitrary finite simplicial complex, then there is a graph G such that the complex Hom(T,G) is homotopy equivalent to X. The proof is constructive, and uses a nerve lemma. Along the way several results regarding Hom complexes, exponentials, and subdivision are established that may be of independent interest.
The geometry of relations

There is a canonical way to associate two simplicial complexes K, L to any relation $R\subset X\times Y$. Moreover, the geometric realizations of K and L are homotopy equivalent. This was studied in the fifties by C.H. Dowker. In this article we prove a Galois-type correspondence for relations $R\subset X\times Y$ when X is fixed and use these constructions to investigate finite posets (or equivalently, finite topological spaces) from a geometrical point of view. Given any poset $(X, \leq)$, we define the simplicial complexes K, L associated to the relation $\leq$. In many cases these polyhedra have the same homotopy type as the standard simplicial complex C of nonempty finite chains in X. We give a complete characterization of the simplicial complexes that are the K or L-complexes of some finite poset and prove that K and L are geometrically equivalent to the smaller complexes K',L' induced by the relation <. More precisely, we prove that K (resp. L) simplicially collapses to K' (resp. L').

In this paper we study the 2-dimension of a finite poset from the topological point of view. We use homotopy theory of finite topological spaces and the concept of a beat point to improve the classical results on 2-dimension, giving a more complete answer to the problem of all possible 2-dimensions of an n-point poset.

The enumeration of independent sets of regular graphs is of interest in statistical mechanics, as it corresponds to the solution of hard-particle models. In 2004, it was conjectured by Fendleyet al. that for some rectangular grids, with toric boundary conditions, the alternating number of independent sets is extremely simple. More precisely, under a coprimality condition on the sides of the rectangle, the number of independent sets of even and odd cardinality always differ by 1. In physics terms, this means looking at the hard-particle model on these grids at activity -1. This conjecture was recently proved by Jonsson. Here we produce other families of grid graphs, with open or cylindric boundary conditions, for which similar properties hold without any size restriction: the number of independent sets of even and odd cardinality always differ by 0, 1,-1, or, in the cylindric case, by some power of 2. We show that these results reflect a stronger property of the independence complexes of our graphs. We determine the homotopy type of these complexes using Forman's discrete Morse theory. We find that these complexes are either contractible, or homotopic to a sphere, or, in the cylindric case, to a wedge of spheres. Finally, we use our enumerative results to determine the spectra of certain transfer matrices describing the hard-particle model on our graphs at activity -1. These results parallel certain conjectures of Fendley et al., proved by Jonsson in the toric case.

We prove that if a simplicial complex is shellable, then the intersection lattice for the corresponding diagonal arrangement is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of spheres. Furthermore, we describe precisely the spheres in the wedge, based on the data of shelling. Also, we give some examples of diagonal arrangements where the complement is K(π,1), coming from rank 3 matroids.

We discuss a topological approach to words introduced by the author. Words on an arbitrary alphabet are approximated by Gauss words and then studied up to natural modifications inspired by the Reidemeister moves on knot diagrams. This leads us to a notion of homotopy for words. We introduce several homotopy invariants of words and give a homotopy classification of words of length five.

We establish basic properties of cluster algebras associated with oriented bordered surfaces with marked points. In particular, we show that the underlying cluster complex of such a cluster algebra does not depend on the choice of coefficients, describe this complex explicitly in terms of "tagged triangulations" of the surface, and determine its homotopy type and its growth rate.

By Lovasz' proof of the Kneser conjecture, the chromatic number of a graph G is bounded from below by the index of the Z_2-space Hom(K_2,G) plus two. We show that the cohomological index of Hom(K_2,G) is also greater than the cohomological index of the Z_2-space Hom(C_{2r+1}, G) for r>0. This gives a new and simple proof of the strong form of the graph colouring theorem by Babson and Kozlov, which had been conjectured by Lovasz, and at the same time shows that it never gives a stronger bound than can be obtained by Hom(K_2, G). The proof extends ideas introduced by Zivaljevic in a previous elegant proof of a special case. We then generalise the arguments and obtain conditions under which corresponding results hold for other graphs in place of C_{2r+1}. This enables us to find an infinite family of test graphs of chromatic number 4 among the Kneser graphs.
Our main new result is a description of the Z_2-homotopy type of the direct limit of the system of all the spaces Hom(C_{2r+1}, G) in terms of the Z_2-homotopy type of Hom(K_2, G). A corollary is that the coindex of Hom(K_2, G) does not exceed the coindex of Hom(C_{2r+1}, G) by more then one if r is chosen sufficiently large. Thus the graph colouring bound in the theorem by Babson & Kozlov is also never weaker than that from Lovasz' proof of the Kneser conjecture.

Let $Φ$ be a finite root system of rank $n$ and let $m$ be a nonnegative integer. The generalized cluster complex $Δ^m (Φ)$ was introduced by S. Fomin and N. Reading. It was conjectured by these authors that $Δ^m (Φ)$ is shellable and by V. Reiner that it is $(m+1)$-Cohen-Macaulay, in the sense of Baclawski. These statements are proved in this paper. Analogous statements are shown to hold for the positive part $Δ^m_+ (Φ)$ of $Δ^m (Φ)$. An explicit homotopy equivalence is given between $Δ^m_+ (Φ)$ and the poset of generalized noncrossing partitions, associated to the pair $(Φ, m)$ by D. Armstrong.

We consider a twisted version of the Hurewicz map on the complement of a hyperplane arrangement. The purpose of this paper is to prove surjectivity of the twisted Hurewicz map under some genericity conditions. As a corollary, we also prove that a generic section of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement has non-trivial homotopy groups.
