Transitive Hall sets
We give the definition of Lazard and Hall sets in the context of transitive factorizations of free monoids. The equivalence of the two properties is proved. This allows to build new effective bases of free partially commutative Lie algebras. The commutation graphs for which such sets exist are completely characterized and we explicit, in this context, the classical PBW rewriting process.

Counting Lattice Paths By Gessel Pairs
We count a large class of lattice paths by using factorizations of free monoids. Besides the classical lattice paths counting problems related to Catalan numbers, we give a new approach to the problem of counting walks on the slit plane (walks avoid a half line) that was first solved by Bousquet-Mélou and Schaeffer. We also solve a problem about walks in the half plane avoiding a half line by subsequently applying the factorizations of two different Gessel pairs, giving a generalization of a result of Bousquet-Mélou.
From Monomials to Words to graphs

Given a finite alphabet X and an ordering on the letters, the map σsends each monomial on X to the word that is the ordered product of the letter powers in the monomial. Motivated by a question on Groebner bases, we characterize ideals I in the free commutative monoid (in terms of a generating set) such that the ideal <σ(I)> generated by σ(I) in the free monoid is finitely generated. Whether there exists an ordering such that <σ(I)> is finitely generated turns out to be NP-complete. The latter problem is closely related to the recognition problem for comparability graphs.

A poset classifying non-commutative term orders
Published in Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science (AA) 2001, pp 301-314 • View Publication • BIB
We study a certain poset on the free monoid on a countable alphabet. This poset is determined by the fact that its total extensions are precisely the standard term orders. We also investigate the poset classifying degree-compatible standard term orders, and the poset classifying sorted term orders. For the latter poset, we give a Galois coconnection with the Young lattice.

Using Rewriting Systems to Compute Kan Extensions and Induced Actions of Categories
Published • View Publication • BIB
The basic method of rewriting for words in a free monoid given a monoid presentation is extended to rewriting for paths in a free category given a `Kan extension presentation'. This is related to work of Carmody-Walters on the Todd-Coxeter procedure for Kan extensions, but allows for the output data to be infinite, described by a language. The result also allows rewrite methods to be applied in a greater range of situations and examples, in terms of induced actions of monoids, categories, groups or groupoids.
