A Voronoi poset
Given a set S of n points in general position, we consider all k-th order Voronoi diagrams on S, for k=1,...,n, simultaneously. We deduce symmetry relations for the number of faces, number of vertices and number of circles of certain orders. These symmetry relations are independent of the position of the sites in S. As a consequence we show that the reduced Euler characteristic of the poset of faces equals zero whenever n odd.

Regular flip equivalence of surface triangulations
Published in Topology and Its Applications 127, pp 169-173 (2002) • View Publication • BIB
Any two triangulations of a closed surface with the same number of vertices can be transformed into each other by a sequence of regular flips, provided the number of vertices exceeds a number N depending on the surface. Examples show that in general N is bigger than the minimal number of vertices of a triangulation. The existence of N was known, but no estimate. This paper provides an estimate for N that is linear in the Euler characteristic of the surface.

A geometric parametrization for the virtual Euler characteristic for the moduli spaces of real and complex algebriac curves
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that the virtual Euler characteristics of the moduli spaces of $s$-pointed algebraic curves of genus $g$ can be determined from a polynomial in $1/γ$ where $γ$ permits specialization, through $γ=1,$ to the complex case treated by Harer and Zagier and, through $γ=1/2$, to the real case. This polynomial appears to have geometric significance, and may be the virtual Euler characteristic of some moduli space, as yet unidentified. This is related to a conjecture that the indeterminate $b=γ^1-1$ is associated with a combinatorial invariant of cell-decompositions through matrix models and the Jack symmetric functions. The development uses Strebel differentials to triangulate the moduli spaces, and the identification of $γ$ both as a parameter in a Jack symmetric function and as a parameter in a matrix model through generalized Selberg integrals.

Counting faces of cubical spheres modulo two
Published • View Publication • BIB
Several recent papers have addressed the problem of characterizing the $f$-vectors of cubical polytopes. This is largely motivated by the complete characterization of the $f$-vectors of simplicial polytopes given by Stanley, Billera, and Lee in 1980. Along these lines Blind and Blind have shown that unlike in the simplicial case, there are parity restrictions on the $f$-vectors of cubical polytopes. In particular, except for polygons, all even dimensional cubical polytopes must have an even number of vertices. Here this result is extended to a class of zonotopal complexes which includes simply connected odd dimensional manifolds. This paper then shows that the only modular equations which hold for the $f$-vectors of all d-dimensional cubical polytopes (and hence spheres) are modulo two. Finally, the question of which mod two equations hold for the $f$-vectors of PL cubical spheres is reduced to a question about the Euler characteristics of multiple point loci from codimension one PL immersions into the $d$-sphere. Some results about this topological question are known (Eccles,Herbert,Lannes) and Herbert's result we translate into the cubical setting, thereby removing the PL requirement. A central definition in this paper is that of the derivative complex, which captures the correspondence between cubical spheres and codimension one immersions.

Orbifold Euler characteristics and the number of commuting n-tuples in symmetric groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Generating functions for the number of commuting m-tuples in the symmetric groups are obtained. We define a natural sequence of ``orbifold Euler characteristics'' for a finite group G acting on a manifold X. Our definition generalizes the ordinary Euler characteristic of X/G and the string-theoretic orbifold Euler characteristic. Our formulae for commuting m-tuples underlie formulas that generalize the results of Macdonald and Hirzebruch-Hofer concerning the ordinary and string-theoretic Euler characteristics of symmetric products.
