In this paper, we mainly study the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the generalized binomial edge ideals of graphs. We show that this number can be any integer number from $2$ to $n-1$ where $n$ is the number of vertices in the underlying graph. We are able to show this, after giving some tight lower and upper bounds for the regularity of generalized binomial edge ideals of the join product of graphs. In particular, we characterize all generalized binomial edge ideals with the regularity equal to~$2$ as well as extremal Gorenstein ideals. For this purpose, we give a new combinatorial characterization for the class of $P_4$-free graphs.

Binomial edge ideals associated to a simple graph G were introduced by Herzog and collaborators and, independently, by Ohtani. They became an ``instant classic" in combinatorial commutative algebra with more than 100 papers devoted to their investigation over the past 15 years. They exhibit many striking properties, including being radical and, moreover, Cartwright-Sturmfels. Using the fact that binomial edge ideals can be seen as ideals of 2-minors of a matrix of variables with two rows, generalized binomial edge ideals of 2-minors of matrices of m rows were introduced by Rauh and proved to be radical. The goal of this paper is to prove that generalized binomial edge ideals are Cartwright-Sturmfels. On the way we provide results on ideal constructions preserving the Cartwright-Sturmfels property. We also give examples and counterexamples to the Cartwright-Sturmfels property for higher minors.
Chromatic numbers from edge ideals: Graph classes with vanishing syzygies are polynomially $χ$-bounded
The chromatic number $χ$ of a graph is bounded from below by its clique number $ω,$ but it can be arbitrary large. Perfect graphs are defined by $χ=ω$ for all induced subgraphs. An interesting relaxation are $χ$-bounded graph classes, where $χ\leq f(ω).$ It is not always possible to achieve this with a polynomial $f.$
The edge ideal $I_G$ of a graph $G$ is generated by monomials $x_ux_v$ for each edge $uv$ of $G.$ The bi-graded betti numbers $β_{i,j}(I)$ are central algebraic geometric invariants. We study the graph classes where for some fixed $i,j$ that syzygy vanishes, that is, $β_{i,j}(I_G)=0.$
We prove that $χ\leq f(ω),$ where $f$ is a polynomial of degree $2j-2i-4.$ For the elementary special case $β_{i,2i+2}(I_G)=0,$ this amounts to that $(i+1)K_2$-free graphs are ${ω-1+2i \choose 2i}$-colorable, improving on an old combinatorial result by Wagon. We also show that triangle-free graphs with $β_{i,j}(I_G)=0$ are $(j-1)$-colorable.
Complexity wise, we show that these colorings can be derived in time $O(n^3)$ for graphs on $n$ vertices. Moreover, we show that for almost all graphs with parabolic $i,j,$ there are better bounds on $χ.$

We introduce a persistent commutative algebra for studying the algebraic and combinatorial evolution of edge ideals of graphs and hypergraphs under filtration. Building on the Persistent Stanley--Reisner Theory (PSRT), we develop the notion of persistent edge ideals and analyze their graded Betti numbers across the filtration of graphs or hypergraphs. To enable this analysis, we establish a persistent extension of Hochster's formula, providing a functorial correspondence between algebraic and topological persistence. We further examine the behavior of Betti splittings in the persistent setting, proving a general inequality that extends the classical splitting result to the filtration of monomial ideals. Motivated by graph-theoretic interpretations, we introduce persistent minimal vertex covers, which encode the temporal structure of combinatorial dependencies within evolving graphs or hypergraphs. Applications to alignment-free genomic classification and molecular isomer discrimination demonstrate the interpretability and representatbility of persistent edge ideals as algebraic invariants, bridging combinatorial commutative algebra and data science.
Bounded powers of edge ideals: Pseudo-Gorenstein and Level polytopes
A lattice polytope $\mathcal{P} \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ of dimension $n$ is called level* if (i) $\mathcal{P}$ is normal, (ii) $(\mathcal{P} \setminus \partial \mathcal{P}) \cap \mathbb{Z}^n \neq \emptyset$ and (iii) for each $N = 2,3, \ldots$ and for each $\textbf{a} \in N(\mathcal{P} \setminus \partial \mathcal{P}) \cap \mathbb{Z}^n$, there is $\textbf{a}_0 \in (\mathcal{P} \setminus \partial \mathcal{P}) \cap \mathbb{Z}^n$ together with $\textbf{a}' \in (N-1)\mathcal{P} \cap \mathbb{Z}^n$ for which $\textbf{a} = \textbf{a}_0 + \textbf{a}'$, where $N\mathcal{P} = \{N\textbf{a} : \textbf{a} \in \mathcal{P}\}$. A normal polytope $\mathcal{P} \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ of dimension $n$ is called pseudo-Gorenstein* [4] if $
|(\mathcal{P} \setminus \partial \mathcal{P}) \cap \mathbb{Z}^n| = 1. $ A pseudo-Gorenstein* polytope $\mathcal{P}$ is level* if and only if $\mathcal{P}$ is reflexive up to translation. In the present paper, level* polytopes together with pseudo-Gorenstein* polytopes arising from discrete polymatroids of bounded powers of edge ideals are studied.
Scarf complexes of connected and path ideals
The $t$-connected ideal of a graph $G$ is generated by all connected induced subgraphs of $G$ with $t$ vertices. When $t = 2$, this coincides with the usual edge ideal of the graph. Following the work of Faridi et al., we give a classification of the graphs whose $t$-connected ideals are minimally resolved by their Scarf complex. We also consider the $t$-path ideal of a graph $G$ which is the ideal generated by all paths of length $t$ in $G$. In this case, we are able to give a classification of the same type for paths of length $t = 4$.
Hilbert Coefficients and Regularity of Binomial Edge Ideals
Let $G$ be a simple graph on $n$ vertices, and let $J_G$ denotes the corresponding binomial edge ideal in $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n,y_1,\ldots,y_n]$, where $\mathbb{K}$ is a field. We show that if a vertex satisfies a certain degree condition, then some Hilbert coefficients remain unchanged upon its removal, thereby providing a reduction technique for computing Hilbert coefficients. As an application, for any $i\geq 0$ and a pair $(r,s)$ with $r\geq 2, s\in \mathbb{Z}$, we show that there always exists a graph $G$ such that $\mathrm{reg}(S/J_G)=r$ and $e_i(S/J_G)=s$, where $\mathrm{reg}(S/J_G)$ and $e_i(R/J_G)$ denote the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and the $i$-th Hilbert coefficient of $S/J_G$, respectively. In particular, this demonstrates that there is no inherent relationship between the regularity and the Hilbert coefficients for the class of binomial edge ideals.

In this paper, we prove the upper bound conjecture proposed by Saeedi Madani \& Kiani on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of generalized binomial edge ideals. We give a combinatorial upper bound of regularity for generalized binomial edge ideals, which is better than the bound claimed in that conjecture. Also, we show that the bound is tight by providing an infinite class of graphs.

In this paper, we study rooted products of graphs from the perspective of combinatorial commutative algebra. For edge ideals, we introduce the 2-Cohen-Macaulayness with respect to a vertex and use it to investigate when edge ideals of rooted products of graphs are Cohen-Macaulay. Moreover, we completely determine when attaching a graph on at most six vertices to a given graph as rooted products, yields a Cohen-Macaulay edge ideal. Also, we define mulit-clique corona graphs as a generalization of clique-corona graphs and multi-whisker graphs. We prove that multi-clique corona graphs are vertex decomposable and hence sequentially Cohen-Macaulay. Also, we give formulas for the projective dimension and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity.
On the gradient of a monomial ideal
Let $K$ be a field of characteristic zero, let $I \subset S = K[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be a homogeneous ideal, and let $\partial(I)$ be its gradient ideal. We study the relationship between $\mathrm{reg}\,I$ and $\mathrm{reg}\,\partial(I)$. While earlier work by Busé, Dimca, Schenck, and Sticlaru showed these regularities are generally incomparable for hypersurface ideals, we prove they remain incomparable even for monomial ideals with linear resolution, answering a question of J. Herzog. In fact, for any integers $a \in \mathbb{Z}$ and $b \ge - 1$, we construct monomial ideals $I$ and $J$ such that $\mathrm{reg}\,I - \mathrm{reg}\,\partial(I) = a$, $\mathrm{reg}\,\partial(J) - \mathrm{reg}\,J = b$ and $J$ has linear resolution. We introduce monomial ideals with differential linear resolution as those monomial ideals whose all iterated gradient ideals have linear resolution. We prove that polymatroidal ideals, equigenerated (strongly) stable ideals, powers of edge ideals with linear resolution, complementary edge ideals with linear resolution, and certain equigenerated squarefree monomial ideals with many generators satisfy this property.
Asymptotic invariants of symbolic powers of binomial edge ideals
To a graph $G$ one associates the binomial edge ideal $J_G$ generated by a collection of binomials corresponding to the edges of $G$. In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of symbolic powers of $J_G$, its lexicographic initial ideal $\mathrm{in}_<(J_G)$, and its multigraded generic initial ideal $\mathrm{gin}(J_G)$. We focus on the Waldschmidt constant, $\widehatα$, and asymptotic regularity, $\widehat{\mathrm{reg}}$, which capture linear growth of minimal generator degrees and Castelnuovo--Mumford regularity. We explicitly compute $\widehatα(J_G)$ and $\widehatα(\mathrm{in}_<(J_G))$, and compare the Betti numbers of the symbolic powers of $J_G$ and $J_H$, where $H$ is a subgraph of $G$. To analyze $\mathrm{in}_<(J_G)$ and $\mathrm{gin}(J_G)$, we use the symbolic polyhedron, a convex polyhedron that encodes the elements of the symbolic powers of a monomial ideal. We determine its vertices via $G$'s induced connected subgraphs and show that $\widehatα(\mathrm{gin}(J_G))=\widehatα(I_G)$, where $I_G$ is the edge ideal of $G$. This yields an alternate proof of known bounds for $\widehatα(I_G)$ in terms of $G$'s clique number and chromatic number.
Castelnuovo-Mumford Regularity and Combinatorial Invariants of Trees
This work establishes combinatorial bounds on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of edge ideals for trees and their multi-whiskered variants. For a tree \( T \), we give bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of \( I(T) \) in terms of the order, diameter, and number of pendant vertices. Furthermore, we present an upper bound for multi-whiskered trees \( T_{\mathbf{a}} \), demonstrating that the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of \( I(T_{\mathbf{a}}) \) is bounded by the same invariants of the underlying tree \( T \). A principal consequence of this work is the derivation of corresponding inequalities for two key combinatorial invariants of \( T \), namely the induced matching number \( \operatorname{im}(T) \) and the independence number \( α(T) \).

Let $S=K[x_1, \ldots,x_n]$ denote the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$ and $I(G) \subset S$ the edge ideal of a finite graph $G$ on $n$ vertices. Given a vector $\mathfrak{c}\in\mathbb{N}^n$ and an integer $q\geq 1$, we denote by $(I(G)^q)_{\mathfrak{c}}$ the ideal of $S$ generated by those monomials belonging to $I(G)^q$ whose exponent vectors are componentwise bounded above by $\mathfrak{c}$. Let $δ_{\mathfrak{c}}(I(G))$ denote the largest integer $q$ for which $(I(G)^q)_{\mathfrak{c}}\neq (0)$. Since $(I(G)^{δ_{\mathfrak{c}}(I)})_{\mathfrak{c}}$ is a polymatroidal ideal, it follows that its minimal set of monomial generators is the set of bases of a discrete polymatroid $\mathcal{D}(G,\mathfrak{c})$. In the present paper, a classification of Gorenstein polytopes of the form ${\rm conv}(\mathcal{D}(G,\mathfrak{c}))$ is studied.
Grobner bases for determinantal facet ideals of simplicial complexes
We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for simplicial complexes whose determinantal facet ideals admit reduced Grobner bases under diagonal term orders. Building on and extending foundational results for binomial edge ideals and determinantal ideals, we introduce two new classes of simplicial complexes-strong closed and poor closed-that generalize the notion of closedness in higher dimensions. Our main theorem offers a unified framework that recovers and refines several known results, including those for unit interval graphs and determinantal ideals of complete graphs. In particular, we correct and generalize prior characterizations of Grobner bases for determinantal facet ideals, establishing radicality for strong closed complexes and providing a new proof for the Grobner basis of maximal minors.
Analytic spread of binomial edge ideals
We investigate the analytic spread of binomial edge ideals of finite simple graphs. We provide tight bounds for this invariant in general. For special families of graphs (e.g., closed graphs, pseudo-forests), we compute the exact value for the analytic spread of the corresponding binomial edge ideals via combinatorial and convex geometric means.
Admissible set and squarefree-power-like function with applications to squarefree symbolic powers
We introduce the abstract notion of squarefree-power-like functions, which unify the sequences of squarefree ordinary and symbolic powers of squarefree monomial ideals. By employing the Tor-vanishing criteria for mixed sums of ideals, we establish sharp lower bounds for their Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity in terms of what we call the admissible set of the associated hypergraph. As an application, we derive the first general combinatorial lower bound for the regularity of squarefree symbolic powers of monomial ideals. In the setting of edge ideals, by exploiting the special combinatorial structures of block graphs and Cohen-Macaulay chordal graphs, we show that this bound turns into an exact formula for all squarefree symbolic powers of block graphs, as well as for the second squarefree symbolic powers of edge ideals of Cohen-Macaulay chordal graphs.

In this paper we investigate the Rees algebras of squarefree monomial ideals $I \subset S=K[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ generated in degree $n-2$, where $K$ is a field. Every such ideal arises as the complementary edge ideal $I_c(G)$ of a finite simple graph $G$. We describe the defining equations of the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(I_c(G))$ in terms of the combinatorics of $G$. If $G$ is a tree or a unicyclic graph whose unique induced cycle has length $3$ or $4$, we prove that $\mathcal{R}(I_c(G))$ is Koszul. We also determine the asymptotic depth of the powers of $I_c(G)$, proving that $\lim_{k \to \infty}\text{depth}\, S/I_c(G)^k=b(G)$, where $b(G)$ is the number of bipartite connected components of $G$. Finally, we show that the index of depth stability of $I_c(G)$ is at most $n-2$, and equality holds when $G$ is a path graph.
The Serre depth of Stanley-Reisner rings and the depth of their symbolic powers
We investigate an invariant, called the Serre depth, from the perspective of combinatorial commutative algebra. In this paper, we establish several properties of an analogue of the depth of Stanley-Reisner rings. In particular, we relate the Serre depth both to the minimal free resolution of a Stanley-Reisner ring and to that of its Alexander dual. Also, we establish an analogue of a known result that describes the depth of Stanley-Reisner rings in terms of skeletons. Moreover, we study the Serre depth for $(S_{2})$ and the depth on the symbolic powers of Stanley--Reisner ideals. It had been an open question whether the depth of the symbolic powers of Stanley-Reisner ideals satisfies a non-increasing property, but Nguyen and Trung provided a negative answer. We construct an example that the Serre depth for $(S_{2})$ and the depth do not satisfy this property and its second symbolic power is Cohen-Macaulay. Moreover, we prove that the sequence of the Serre depth for $(S_{2})$ on the symbolic powers is convergent and that its limit coincides with the minimum value. Finally, we study the Serre depth on edge and cover ideals. Whether the depth on symbolic powers of edge ideals satisfies a non-increasing property has remained an open question. We address a related problem and show that the Serre depth for $(S_{2})$ on edge ideals of any well-covered graph satisfies a non-increasing property. In addition, we prove that the Serre depth for $(S_{2})$ on the cover ideals of any graph also satisfies a non-increasing property. Moreover, we determine the Serre depth on edge ideals of very well-covered graphs.
Binomial edge ideals of Cameron-Walker graphs
Let $G$ be a Cameron--Walker graph on $n$ vertices and $J_G$ the binomial edge ideal of $G$. Let $S$ denote the polynomial ring in $2n$ variables over a field. It is shown that the following conditions are equivalent: (i) $S/J_G$ is Cohen--Macaulay; (ii) $J_G$ is unmixed; (iii) $\dim (S/J_G) = n+1$; (iv) (a) $n = 3$ and $G$ is a path of length $2$ or (b) $n = 5$ and $G$ is a path of length $4$ or (c) $n=5$ and $G$ is obtained by attaching a path of length $2$ to a triangle. Moreover, the depth of $S/J_G$ is computed for a class of Cameron--Walker graphs, called minimal dense Cameron--Walker graphs. As an application, it is proved that finite graphs $G$ with $\depth(S/J_G)=6$ can have any number of vertices~$n\geq 6$. Finally, it is shown that given integers $t,n$ with $6\leq t\leq n+1$, there exists a finite connected graph $G$ with $\depth (S/J_G)=t$.
(Generalized) binomial edge ideals and their regularity
