Combinatorics of $(\ell,0)$-JM partitions, $\ell$-cores, the ladder crystal and the finite Hecke algebra
The following thesis contains results on the combinatorial representation theory of the finite Hecke algebra $H_n(q)$.
In Chapter 2 simple combinatorial descriptions are given which determine when a Specht module corresponding to a partition $λ$ is irreducible. This is done by extending the results of James and Mathas. These descriptions depend on the crystal of the basic representation of the affine Lie algebra $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}_\ell}$. In Chapter 3 these results are extended to determine which irreducible modules have a realization as a Specht module. To do this, a new condition of irreducibility due to Fayers is combined with a new description of the crystal from Chapter 2. In Chapter 4 a bijection of cores first described by myself and Monica Vazirani is studied in more depth. Various descriptions of it are given, relating to the quotient $\widetilde{S_\ell}/{S_\ell}$ and to the bijection given by Lapointe and Morse.
Resilient pancyclicity of random and pseudo-random graphs

A graph $G$ on $n$ vertices is \textit{pancyclic} if it contains cycles of length $t$ for all $3 \leq t \leq n$. In this paper we prove that for any fixed $ε>0$, the random graph $G(n,p)$ with $p(n)\gg n^{-1/2}$ asymptotically almost surely has the following resilience property. If $H$ is a subgraph of $G$ with maximum degree at most $(1/2 - ε)np$ then $G-H$ is pancyclic. In fact, we prove a more general result which says that if $p \gg n^{-1+1/(l-1)}$ for some integer $l \geq 3$ then for any $ε>0$, asymptotically almost surely every subgraph of $G(n,p)$ with minimum degree greater than $(1/2+ε)np$ contains cycles of length $t$ for all $l \leq t \leq n$. These results are tight in two ways. First, the condition on $p$ essentially cannot be relaxed. Second, it is impossible to improve the constant 1/2 in the assumption for the minimum degree. We also prove corresponding results for pseudo-random graphs.
On the Order Dimension of Outerplanar Maps

Schnyder characterized planar graphs in terms of order dimension. Brightwell and Trotter proved that the dimension of the vertex-edge-face poset $\Pvef{M}$ of a planar map $M$ is at most four. In this paper we investigate cases where $\dim(\Pvef{M}) \leq 3$ and also where $\dim(\Qvf{M}) \leq 3$; here $\Qvf{M}$ denotes the vertex-face poset of $M$. We show: - If $M$ contains a $K_4$-subdivision, then $\dim(\Pvef{M}) = \dim(\Qvf{M}) = 4$. - If $M$ or the dual $M^*$ contains a $K_{2,3}$-subdivision, then $\dim(\Pvef{M}) = 4$. Hence, a map $M$ with $\dim(\Pvef{M}) \leq 3$ must be outerplanar and have an outerplanar dual. We concentrate on the simplest class of such maps and prove that within this class $\dim(\Pvef{M}) \leq 3$ is equivalent to the existence of a certain oriented coloring of edges. This condition is easily checked and can be turned into a linear time algorithm returning a 3-realizer. Additionally, we prove that if $M$ is 2-connected and $M$ and $M^*$ are outerplanar, then $\dim(\Qvf{M}) \leq 3$. There are, however, outerplanar maps with $\dim(\Qvf{M}) = 4$. We construct the first such example.
Chordal Bipartite Graphs with High Boxicity

The boxicity of a graph G is defined as the minimum integer k such that G is an intersection graph of axis-parallel k-dimensional boxes. Chordal bipartite graphs are bipartite graphs that do not contain an induced cycle of length greater than 4. It was conjectured by Otachi, Okamoto and Yamazaki that chordal bipartite graphs have boxicity at most 2. We disprove this conjecture by exhibiting an infinite family of chordal bipartite graphs that have unbounded boxicity.
A bracket polynomial for graphs. III. Vertex weights

In earlier work the Kauffman bracket polynomial was extended to an invariant of marked graphs, i.e., looped graphs whose vertices have been partitioned into two classes (marked and not marked). The marked-graph bracket polynomial is readily modified to handle graphs with weighted vertices. We present formulas that simplify the computation of this weighted bracket for graphs that contain twin vertices or are constructed using graph composition, and we show that graph composition corresponds to the construction of a link diagram from tangles.
A diagrammatic representation of an affine $C$ Temperley--Lieb algebra
In this thesis, I present an associative diagram algebra that is a faithful representation of a particular Temperley--Lieb algebra of type affine $C$, which has a basis indexed by the fully commutative elements of the Coxeter group of the same type. The Coxeter group of type affine $C$ contains an infinite number of fully commutative elements, and so the corresponding Temperley--Lieb algebra is of infinite rank. With the exception of type affine $A$, all other generalized Temperley--Lieb algebras with known diagrammatic representations are of finite rank. In the finite rank case, counting arguments are employed to prove faithfulness, but these techniques are not available in the affine $C$ case. To prove faithfulness, I classify the fully commutative elements in Coxeter groups of types $B$ and affine $C$ that are irreducible under weak star reductions. The classification of these irreducible elements provides the groundwork for inductive arguments that are used to prove faithfulness. The classification of the weak star irreducible elements of type $B$ also verifies C.K. Fan's unproved claim about about the set of fully commutative elements in a Coxeter group of type $B$ having no generator appearing in the left or right descent set that can be left or right cancelled, respectively. The results of this thesis will be used to construct a trace on the Hecke algebra of type affine $C$, which will then be used to compute leading coefficients of certain Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials in a non-recursive way.
On The Influences of Variables on Boolean Functions in Product Spaces

In this paper we consider the influences of variables on Boolean functions in general product spaces. Unlike the case of functions on the discrete cube where there is a clear definition of influence, in the general case at least three definitions were presented in different papers. We propose a family of definitions for the influence, that contains all the known definitions, as well as other natural definitions, as special cases. We prove a generalization of the BKKKL theorem, which is tight in terms of the definition of influence used in the assertion, and use it to generalize several known results on influences in general product spaces.
The niche graphs of doubly partial orders

The competition graph of a doubly partial order is known to be an interval graph. The competition-common enemy graph of a doubly partial order is also known to be an interval graph unless it contains a cycle of length 4 as an induced subgraph. In this paper, we show that the niche graph of a doubly partial order is not necessarily an interval graph. In fact, we prove that, for each integer n at least 4, there exists a doubly partial order whose niche graph contains an induced subgraph isomorphic to a cycle of length n. We also show that if the niche graph of a doubly partial order is triangle-free, then it is an interval graph.
An obstacle to a decomposition theorem for near-regular matroids

Seymour's Decomposition Theorem for regular matroids states that any matroid representable over both GF(2) and GF(3) can be obtained from matroids that are graphic, cographic, or isomorphic to R10 by 1-, 2-, and 3-sums. It is hoped that similar characterizations hold for other classes of matroids, notably for the class of near-regular matroids. Suppose that all near-regular matroids can be obtained from matroids that belong to a few basic classes through k-sums. Also suppose that these basic classes are such that, whenever a class contains all graphic matroids, it does not contain all cographic matroids. We show that in that case 3-sums will not suffice.

Let $F$ be a graph which contains an edge whose deletion reduces its chromatic number. We prove tight bounds on the number of copies of $F$ in a graph with a prescribed number of vertices and edges. Our results extend those of Simonovits, who proved that there is one copy of $F$, and of Rademacher, Erd\H os and Lovász-Simonovits, who proved similar counting results when $F$ is a complete graph.
One of the simplest cases of our theorem is the following new result. There is an absolute positive constant $c$ such that if $n$ is sufficiently large and $1 \le q < cn$, then every $n$ vertex graph with $n$ even and $n^2/4 +q$ edges contains at least $q(n/2)(n/2-1)(n/2-2)$ copies of a five cycle. Similar statements hold for any odd cycle and the bounds are best possible.

A pseudo $(v,\, k,\, \la)$-design is a pair $(X, {\cal B})$ where $X$ is a $v$-set and ${\cal B}=\{B_1,...,B_{v-1}\}$ is a collection of $k$-subsets (blocks) of $X$ such that each two distinct $B_i, B_j$ intersect in $\la$ elements; and $0\le\la <k \le v-1$. We use the notion of pseudo designs to characterize graphs of order $n$ whose (adjacency) spectrum contains a zero and $\pmθ$ with multiplicity $(n-3)/2$ where $0<θ\le\sqrt{2}$. Meanwhile, partial results confirming a conjecture of O. Marrero on characterization of pseudo $(v,\, k,\, \la)$-designs are obtained.

Counting substructures II: triple systems

For various triple systems $F$, we give tight lower bounds on the number of copies of $F$ in a triple system with a prescribed number of vertices and edges. These are the first such results for hypergraphs, and extend earlier theorems of Bollobás, Frankl, Füredi, Keevash, Pikhurko, Simonovits, and Sudakov who proved that there is one copy of $F$.
A sample result is the following: Füredi-Simonovits and independently Keevash-Sudakov settled an old conjecture of Sós by proving that the maximum number of triples in an $n$ vertex triple system (for $n$ sufficiently large and even) that contains no copy of the Fano plane is $p(n)={n/2 \choose 2}n.$
We prove that there is an absolute constant $c$ such that if $n$ is sufficiently large and $1 \le q \le cn^2$, then every $n$ vertex triple system with $p(n)+q$ edges contains at least $6q({n/2 \choose 4}+(n/2 -3){n/2 \choose 3}$$ copies of the Fano plane. This is sharp for $q\le n/2-2$.
Our proofs use the recently proved hypergraph removal lemma and stability results for the corresponding Turán problem.
Möbius numbers of some modified generalized noncrossing partitions

In two recent papers we introduced some new techniques for constructing an extension of a probability-preserving system $T:\mathbb{Z}^d\curvearrowright (X,μ)$ that enjoys certain desirable properties in connexion with the asymptotic behaviour of some related nonconventional ergodic averages.
The present paper is the first of two that will explore various refinements and extensions of these ideas. This first part is dedicated to some much more general machinery for the construction of extensions that can be used to recover various earlier results. It also contains two relatively simple new applications of this machinery to the study of certain families of nonconventional averages, one in discrete and one in continuous time (convergence being a new result for the latter).
In the forthcoming second part (arXiv:0910.0907) we will introduce the problem of describing the characteristic factors and the limit of the linear nonconventional averages $\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N \prod_{i=1}^kf_i\circ T^{n\bf{p}_i}$ when the directions $\bf{p}_1$, $\bf{p}_2$, \ldots, $\bf{p}_k \in \mathbb{Z}^d$ are not assumed to be linearly independent, and provide a fairly detailed solution in the case when k = 3, d = 2 and any pair of directions is linearly independent. This will then be used to prove the convergence in $L^2(μ)$ of the quadratic nonconventional averages $\frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N (f_1\circ T_1^{n^2})(f_2\circ T_1^{n^2}T_2^n)$.

We generalise structure tree theory, which is based on removing finitely many edges, to removing finitely many vertices. This gives a significant generalization of Tutte's tree decomposition of 2-connected graphs into 3-connected blocks. For a finite graph there is a structure tree that contains information about $k$-connectivity for any $k$. The theory can also be applied to infinite graphs that have more than one vertex end, i.e. ends that can be separated by removing a finite number of vertices. This gives a generalization of Stallings' structure theorem for groups with more than one end.

We develop a theory for quotients of geometries and obtain sufficient conditions for the quotient of a geometry to be a geometry. These conditions are compared with earlier work on quotients, in particular by Pasini and Tits. We also explore geometric properties such as connectivity, firmness and transitivity conditions to determine when they are preserved under the quotienting operation. We show that the class of coset pregeometries, which contains all flag-transitive geometries, is closed under an appropriate quotienting operation.

We show that for every $n \geq 1$ and over any finite alphabet, there is a word whose circular factors of length $n$ have a one-to-one correspondence with the set of primitive words. In particular, we prove that such a word can be obtained by a greedy algorithm, or by concatenating all Lyndon words of length $n$ in increasing lexicographic order. We also look into connections between de Bruijn graphs of primitive words and Lyndon graphs.
Finally, we also show that the shortest word that contains every $p$-power of length $pn$ over a $k$-letter alphabet has length between $pk^n$ and roughly $(p+ \frac{1}{k}) k^n$, for all integers $p \geq 1$. An algorithm that generates a word which achieves the upper bound is provided.

Let A_{R,q} denote a family of covering codes, in which the covering radius R and the size q of the underlying Galois field are fixed, while the code length tends to infinity. In this paper, infinite sets of families A_{R,q}, where R is fixed but q ranges over an infinite set of prime powers are considered, and the dependence on q of the asymptotic covering densities of A_{R,q} is investigated. It turns out that for the upper limit of the covering density of A_{R,q}, the best possibility is O(q). The main achievement of the present paper is the construction of asymptotic optimal infinite sets of families A_{R,q} for any covering radius R >= 2. We first showed that for a given R, to obtain optimal infinite sets of families it is enough to construct R infinite families A_{R,q}^{(0)},A_{R,q}^{(1)},...,A_{R,q}^{(R-1)} such that, for all u >= u_{0}, the family A_{R,q}^{(v)} contains codes of codimension r_{u}=Ru+v and length f_{q}^{v}(r_{u}) where f_{q}^{v}(r)=O(q^{(r-R)/R) and u_{0} is a constant. Then, we were able to construct the needed families A_{R,q}^{(v)} for any covering radius R >= 2, with q ranging over the (infinite) set of R-th powers. For each of these families A_{R,q}^{(v)}, the lower limit of the covering density is bounded from above by a constant independent of q.

We prove that for all epsilon>0 there are c>0 and n_0 such that for all n>n_0 the following holds. For any two-colouring of the edges of $K_{n,n,n}$ one colour contains copies of all trees T of order t<(3-epsilon)n/2 and with maximum degree at most n^c. This confirms a conjecture of Schelp.
