The Tutte Polynomial of a Morphism of Matroids 6. A Multi-Faceted Counting Formula for Hyperplane Regions and Acyclic Orientations
We show that the 4-variable generating function of certain orientation related parameters of an ordered oriented matroid is the evaluation at (x + u, y+v) of its Tutte polynomial. This evaluation contains as special cases the counting of regions in hyperplane arrangements and of acyclic orientations in graphs. Several new 2-variable expansions of the Tutte polynomial of an oriented matroid follow as corollaries.
This result hold more generally for oriented matroid perspectives, with specific special cases the counting of bounded regions in hyperplane arrangements or of bipolar acyclic orientations in graphs.
In corollary, we obtain expressions for the partial derivatives of the Tutte polynomial as generating functions of the same orientation parameters.
Six combinatorial clases of maximal convex tropical polyhedra
In this paper we bring together tropical linear algebra and convex 3-dimensional bodies. We show how certain convex 3-dimensional bodies having 20 vertices and 12 facets can be encoded in a $4\times 4$ integer zero-diagonal matrix $A$. A tropical tetrahedron is the set of points in $\R^3$ tropically spanned by four given tropically non-coplanar points. It is a near-miss Johnson solid. The coordinates of the points are arranged as the columns of a $4\times 4$ real matrix $A$ and the tetrahedron is denoted $\spann(A)$. We study tropical tetrahedra which are convex and maximal, computing the extremals of $\spann(A)$ and the length (tropical or Euclidean) of its edges. Then, we classify convex maximal tropical tetrahedra, combinatorially. There are six classes, up to symmetry and chirality. Only one class contains symmetric solids and only one contains chiral ones. In the way, we show that the combinatorial type of the regular dodecahedron does not occur here. We also prove that convex maximal tropical tetrahedra are not vertex-transitive, in general. We give families of examples, circulant matrices providing examples for two classes. A crucial role is played by the $2\times 2$ minors of $A$.
A phase transition in energy-filtered RNA secondary structures

In this paper we study the effect of energy parameters on minimum free energy (mfe) RNA secondary structures. Employing a simplified combinatorial energy model, that is only dependent on the diagram representation and that is not sequence specific, we prove the following dichotomy result. Mfe structures derived via the Turner energy parameters contain only finitely many complex irreducible substructures and just minor parameter changes produce a class of mfe-structures that contain a large number of small irreducibles. We localize the exact point where the distribution of irreducibles experiences this phase transition from a discrete limit to a central limit distribution and subsequently put our result into the context of quantifying the effect of sparsification of the folding of these respective mfe-structures. We show that the sparsification of realistic mfe-structures leads to a constant time and space reduction and that the sparsifcation of the folding of structures with modified parameters leads to a linear time and space reduction. We furthermore identify the limit distribution at the phase transition as a Rayleigh distribution.

This paper is concerned with structures of general graphs with perfect matchings. We first reveal a partially ordered structure among factor-components of general graphs with perfect matchings. Our second result is a generalization of Kotzig's canonical partition to a decomposition of general graphs with perfect matchings. It contains a short proof for the theorem of the canonical partition. These results give decompositions which are canonical, that is, unique to given graphs. We also show that there are correlations between these two and that these can be computed in polynomial time.
Generalized degeneracy, dynamic monopolies and maximum degenerate subgraphs

A graph $G$ is said to be a $k$-degenerate graph if any subgraph of $G$ contains a vertex of degree at most $k$. Let $κ$ be any non-negative function on the vertex set of $G$. We first define a $κ$-degenerate graph. Next we give an efficient algorithm to determine whether a graph is $κ$-degenerate. We revisit the concept of dynamic monopolies in graphs. The latter notion is used in formulation and analysis of spread of influence such as disease or opinion in social networks. We consider dynamic monopolies with (not necessarily positive) but integral threshold assignments. We obtain a sufficient and necessary relationship between dynamic monopolies and generalized degeneracy. As applications of the previous results we consider the problem of determining the maximum size of $κ$-degenerate (or $k$-degenerate) induced subgraphs in any graph. We obtain some upper and lower bounds for the maximum size of any $κ$-degenerate induced subgraph in general and regular graphs. All of our bounds are constructive.

We discuss the stability of a class of normal forms of the completely resonant non--linear Schrödinger equation on a torus described in a previous paper. The discussion is essentially combinatorial and algebraic in nature.
Thus this paper contains the proof of two Theorems of algebraic, combinatorial and geometric nature, which we need in order to prove stability of certain solutions of the non--linear Schrödinger (NLS) equation on a torus.
Completions of epsilon-dense partial Latin squares

A classical question in combinatorics is the following: given a partial latin square P, when can we complete P to a latin square L? In this paper, we will investigate the class of \leqε-dense partial latin squares: partial latin squares in which each symbol, row, and column contains \leqεn-many nonblank cells. A conjecture of Nash-Williams on triangulations of graphs led Daykin and Häggkvist to conjecture that all \leq(1/4)-dense partial latin squares are completable. In this paper, we will discuss the proof methods and results used in previous attempts to resolve this conjecture, introduce a novel technique derived from a paper by Jacobson and Matthews on generating random latin squares, and use this technique to study \leqε-dense partial latin squares that contain \leqdn^2 cells.
In particular, we establish that all \leq(1/5300)-dense n by n partial latin squares are completable, as well as all \leq(1/13)-dense n by n partial latin squares that contain \leq(8.8*10^(-5)*n^2)-many filled cells. This improves prior results of Gustavsson, which required ε= d \leq 10^(-7), as well as Chetwynd and Haggkvist, which required ε= d \leq 10^(-5) and n even, \leq 10^7.

We prove a general large sieve statement in the context of random walks on subgraphs of a given graph. This can be seen as a generalization of previously known results where one performs a random walk on a group enjoying a strong spectral gap property. In such a context the point is to exhibit a strong uniform expansion property for a suitable family of Cayley graphs on quotients. In our combinatorial approach, this is replaced by a result of Alon--Roichman about expanding properties of random Cayley graphs. Applying the general setting we show e.g., that with high probability (in a strong explicit sense) random coloured subsets of integers contain monochromatic (non-empty) subsets summing to zero, or that a random coloring of the edges of a complete graph contains a monochromatic triangle.
A quasi-tree expansion of the Krushkal polynomial

We introduce a generalization of the Krushkal polynomial to nonorientable surfaces, and prove that this polynomial has a natural quasi-tree expansion. This generalized Krushkal polynomial contains the Bollobás-Riordan polynomial of a (possibly nonorientable) ribbon graph as a specialization. The quasi-tree expansion proven here then extends the recent quasi-tree expansions of the Bollobás-Riordan polynomial deduced in the oriented case by A. Champanerkar et al. and in the more general unoriented case by E. Dewey and F. Vignes-Tourneret. The generalized Krushkal polynomial also contains the Las Vergnas polynomial of a cellulation of a surface as a specialization; we use this fact to deduce a quasi-tree expansion for the Las Vergnas polynomial.

Borel-fixed ideals play a key role in the study of Hilbert schemes. Indeed each component and each intersection of components of a Hilbert scheme contains at least one Borel-fixed point, i.e. a point corresponding to a subscheme defined by a Borel-fixed ideal. Moreover Borel-fixed ideals have good combinatorial properties, which make them very interesting in an algorithmic perspective. In this paper, we propose an implementation of the algorithm computing all the saturated Borel-fixed ideals with number of variables and Hilbert polynomial assigned, introduced from a theoretical point of view in the paper "Segment ideals and Hilbert schemes of points", Discrete Mathematics 311 (2011).
A variant of Touchard's Catalan number identity
It is well known that the Catalan number C_n counts dissections of a regular (n+2)-gon into triangles. Here we count such dissections by number of triangles that contain two sides of the polygon among their three edges, leading to a combinatorial interpretation of the identity C_n =sum_{1<=k<=n/2} 2^{n-2k} n-choose-2k C_k (k(n+2))/(n(n-1)), and illustrating its connection with Touchard's identity.

We derive some new results on the k-th barycentric Olson constants of abelian groups (mainly cyclic). This quantity, for a finite abelian (additive) group (G,+), is defined as the smallest integer l such that each subset A of G with at least l elements contains a subset with k elements {g_1, ..., g_k} satisfying g_1 + ... + g_k = k g_j for some 1 <= j <= k.
Conditional Fault Diagnosis of Bubble Sort Graphs under the PMC Model

As the size of a multiprocessor system increases, processor failure is inevitable, and fault identification in such a system is crucial for reliable computing. The fault diagnosis is the process of identifying faulty processors in a multiprocessor system through testing. For the practical fault diagnosis systems, the probability that all neighboring processors of a processor are faulty simultaneously is very small, and the conditional diagnosability, which is a new metric for evaluating fault tolerance of such systems, assumes that every faulty set does not contain all neighbors of any processor in the systems. This paper shows that the conditional diagnosability of bubble sort graphs $B_n$ under the PMC model is $4n-11$ for $n \geq 4$, which is about four times its ordinary diagnosability under the PMC model.
Fault-tolerant analysis of augmented cubes
The augmented cube $AQ_n$, proposed by Choudum and Sunitha [S. A. Choudum, V. Sunitha, Augmented cubes, Networks 40 (2) (2002) 71-84], is a $(2n-1)$-regular $(2n-1)$-connected graph $(n\ge 4)$. This paper determines that the 2-extra connectivity of $AQ_n$ is $6n-17$ for $n\geq 9$ and the 2-extra edge-connectivity is $6n-9$ for $n\geq 4$. That is, for $n\geq 9$ (respectively, $n\geq 4$), at least $6n-17$ vertices (respectively, $6n-9$ edges) of $AQ_n$ have to be removed to get a disconnected graph that contains no isolated vertices and isolated edges. When the augmented cube is used to model the topological structure of a large-scale parallel processing system, these results can provide more accurate measurements for reliability and fault tolerance of the system.

This paper considers the problem of many-to-many disjoint paths in the hypercube $Q_n$ with $f$ faulty vertices and obtains the following result. For any integer $k$ with $1\leq k\leq n-2$, any two sets $S$ and $T$ of $k$ fault-free vertices in different parts of $Q_n\ (n\geq 3)$, if $f\leq 2n-2k-3$ and each fault-free vertex has at least two fault-free neighbors, then there exist $k$ fully disjoint fault-free paths linking $S$ and $T$ which contain at least $2^n-2f$ vertices. This result improves some known results in a sense.

The Turán density π(H) of a family H of k-graphs is the limit as n tends to infinity of the maximum edge density of an H-free k-graph on n vertices. Let I^k consist of all possible Turán densities and let F^k be the set of Turán densities of finite k-graph families.
Here we prove that F^k contains every density obtained from an arbitrary finite construction by optimally blowing it up and using recursion inside the specified set of parts. As an application, we show that F^k contains an irrational number for each k\ge 3.
Also, we show that I^k has cardinality of the continuum. In particular, I^k is not equal to F^k.
Fault Diagnosability of Arrangement Graphs

The growing size of the multiprocessor system increases its vulnerability to component failures. It is crucial to locate and to replace the faulty processors to maintain a system's high reliability. The fault diagnosis is the process of identifying faulty processors in a system through testing. This paper shows that the largest connected component of the survival graph contains almost all remaining vertices in the $(n,k)$-arrangement graph $A_{n,k}$ when the number of moved faulty vertices is up to twice or three times the traditional connectivity. Based on this fault resiliency, we establishes that the conditional diagnosability of $A_{n,k}$ under the comparison model. We prove that for $k\geq 4$, $n\geq k+2$, the conditional diagnosability of $A_{n,k}$ is $(3k-2)(n-k)-3$; the conditional diagnosability of $A_{n,n-1}$ is $3n-7$ for $n\geq 5$.

A \textit{rainbow subgraph} of an edge-colored graph is a subgraph whose edges have distinct colors. The \textit{color degree} of a vertex $v$ is the number of different colors on edges incident to $v$. We show that if $n$ is large enough (namely, $n\geq 4.25k^2$), then each $n$-vertex graph $G$ with minimum color degree at least $k$ contains a rainbow matching of size at least $k$.
A new bound for the 2/3 conjecture
We show that any n-vertex complete graph with edges colored with three colors contains a set of at most four vertices such that the number of the neighbors of these vertices in one of the colors is at least 2n/3. The previous best value, proved by Erdos, Faudree, Gould, Gyárfás, Rousseau and Schelp in 1989, is 22. It is conjectured that three vertices suffice.
