Thoughts on Barnette's Conjecture
We prove a new sufficient condition for a cubic 3-connected planar graph to be Hamiltonian. This condition is most easily described as a property of the dual graph. Let $G$ be a planar triangulation. Then the dual $G^*$ is a cubic 3-connected planar graph, and $G^*$ is bipartite if and only if $G$ is Eulerian. We prove that if the vertices of $G$ are (improperly) coloured blue and red, such that the blue vertices cover the faces of $G$, there is no blue cycle, and every red cycle contains a vertex of degree at most 4, then $G^*$ is Hamiltonian. This result implies the following special case of Barnette's Conjecture: if $G$ is an Eulerian planar triangulation, whose vertices are properly coloured blue, red and green, such that every red-green cycle contains a vertex of degree 4, then $G^*$ is Hamiltonian. Our final result highlights the limitations of using a proper colouring of $G$ as a starting point for proving Barnette's Conjecture. We also explain related results on Barnette's Conjecture that were obtained by Kelmans and for which detailed self-contained proofs have not been published.
The purity of set-systems related to Grassmann necklaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
Studying the problem of quasicommuting quantum minors, Leclerc and Zelevinsky introduced in 1998 the notion of weakly separated sets in $[n]:=\{1,\ldots, n\}$. Moreover, they raised several conjectures on the purity for this symmetric relation, in particular, on the Boolean cube $2^{[n]}$. In 0909.1423[math.CO] we proved these purity conjectures for the Boolean cube $2^{[n]}$, the discrete Grassmanian ${[n]\choose r}$, and some other set-systems. Oh, Postnikov, and Speyer in arxiv:1109.4434 proved the purity for weakly separated collections inside a positroid which contain a Grassmann necklace $\mathcal N$ defining the positroid. We denote such set-systems as $\mathcal{I}nt(\mathcal N )$. In this paper we give an alternative (and shorter) proof of the purity of $\mathcal{I}nt(\mathcal N )$ and present a stronger result. More precisely, we introduce a set-system $\mathcal{O}ut(\mathcal N )$ complementary to $\mathcal{I}nt(\mathcal N )$, in a sense, and establish its purity. Moreover, we prove (Theorem~3) that these two set-systems are weakly separated from each other. As a consequence of Theorem~3, we obtain the purity of set-systems related to pairs of weakly separated necklaces (Proposition 4 and Corollaries 1 and 2). Finally, we raise a conjecture on the purity of both the interior and exterior of a generalized necklace.

The correspondence between mutually unbiased bases and mutually orthogonal extraordinary supersquares
Published in Reports on Mathematical Physics 73, 49 (2014) • View Publication • BIB
We study the connection between mutually unbiased bases and mutually orthogonal extraordinary supersquares, a wider class of squares which does not contain only the Latin squares. We show that there are four types of complete sets of mutually orthogonal extraordinary supersquares for the dimension $d=8$. We introduce the concept of physical striation and show that this is equivalent to the extraordinary supersquare. The general algorithm for obtaining the mutually unbiased bases and the physical striations is constructed and it is shown that the complete set of mutually unbiased physical striations is equivalent to the complete set of mutually orthogonal extraordinary supersquares. We apply the algorithm to two examples: one for two-qubit systems ($d=4$) and one for three-qubit systems ($d=8$), by using the Type II complete sets of mutually orthogonal extraordinary supersquares of order 8.

The $m$-Cover Posets and Their Applications
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics 69 (2015), pages 65-108 • View Publication • BIB
In this article we introduce the $m$-cover poset of an arbitrary bounded poset $\mathcal{P}$, which is a certain subposet of the $m$-fold direct product of $\mathcal{P}$ with itself. Its ground set consists of multichains of $\mathcal{P}$ that contain at most three different elements, one of which has to be the least element of $\mathcal{P}$, and the other two elements have to form a cover relation in $\mathcal{P}$. We study the $m$-cover poset from a structural and topological point of view. In particular, we characterize the posets whose $m$-cover poset is a lattice for all $m>0$, and we characterize the special cases, where these lattices are EL-shellable, left-modular, or trim. Subsequently, we investigate the $m$-cover poset of the Tamari lattice $\mathcal{T}_{n}$, and we show that the smallest lattice that contains the $m$-cover poset of $\mathcal{T}_{n}$ is isomorphic to the $m$-Tamari lattice $\mathcal{T}_{n}^{(m)}$ introduced by Bergeron and Préville-Ratelle. We conclude this article with a conjectural desription of an explicit realization of $\mathcal{T}_{n}^{(m)}$ in terms of $m$-tuples of Dyck paths.

Edge-disjoint spanning trees and eigenvalues of regular graphs
Published in Linear Algebra Appl. 437 (2012), no. 2, 630--647 • Search Publication
Partially answering a question of Paul Seymour, we obtain a sufficient eigenvalue condition for the existence of $k$ edge-disjoint spanning trees in a regular graph, when $k\in \{2,3\}$. More precisely, we show that if the second largest eigenvalue of a $d$-regular graph $G$ is less than $d-\frac{2k-1}{d+1}$, then $G$ contains at least $k$ edge-disjoint spanning trees, when $k\in \{2,3\}$. We construct examples of graphs that show our bounds are essentially best possible. We conjecture that the above statement is true for any $k<d/2$.

The Ramsey numbers of paths versus wheels: a complete solution
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 21 (2014), no. 4, Paper 4.41, 30 pp • View Publication • BIB
Let $G_1$ and $G_2$ be two given graphs. The Ramsey number $R(G_1,G_2)$ is the least integer $r$ such that for every graph $G$ on $r$ vertices, either $G$ contains a $G_1$ or $\overline{G}$ contains a $G_2$. We denote by $P_n$ the path on $n$ vertices and $W_m$ the wheel on $m+1$ vertices. Chen et al. and Zhang determined the values of $R(P_n,W_m)$ when $m\leq n+1$ and when $n+2\leq m\leq 2n$, respectively. In this paper we determine all the values of $R(P_n,W_m)$ for the left case $m\geq 2n+1$. Together with Chen et al's and Zhang's results, we give a complete solution to the problem of determining the Ramsey numbers of paths versus wheels.

Uniformly resolvable decompositions of $K_v$ into $P_3$ and $K_3$ graphs
In this paper we consider the uniformly resolvable decompositions of the complete graph $K_v$, or the complete graph minus a 1-factor as appropriate, into subgraphs such that each resolution class contains only blocks isomorphic to the same graph. We completely determine the spectrum for the case in which all the resolution classes are either $P_3$ or $K_3$.

Forbidden Minors For 3-Connected Graphs With No Non-Splitting 5-Configurations
For a set of five edges, a graph splits if one of the associated Dodgson polynomials is equal to zero. A graph G splitting for every set of five edges is a minor-closed property. As such there is a finite set of forbidden minors F such that if a graph H does not contain a minor isomorphic to any graph in F, then H splits. In this paper we prove that if a graph G is simple, 3-connected, and splits, then G must not contain any minors isomorphic to K5, K3,3, the octahedron, the cube, or a graph that is a single delta-Y transformation away from the cube. As such this is the set of all simple 3-connected forbidden minors. The complete set of 2-connected or non-simple forbidden minors remains unresolved, though a number have been found.

On $a^n+bn$ modulo $m$
Let $a$ and $m>0$ be integers. We show that for any integer $b$ relatively prime to $m$, the set $\{a^n+bn:\ n=1,\ldots,m^2\}$ contains a complete system of residues modulo $m$. We also pose several conjectures for further research; for example, we conjecture that any integer $n>1$ can be written as $k+m$ with $2^k+m$ prime, where $k$ and $m$ are positive integers.

Forcing $k$-repetitions in degree sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
One of the most basic results in graph theory states that every graph with at least two vertices has two vertices with the same degree. Since there are graphs without $3$ vertices of the same degree, it is natural to ask if for any fixed $k$, every graph $G$ is ``close'' to a graph $G'$ with $k$ vertices of the same degree. Our main result in this paper is that this is indeed the case. Specifically, we show that for any positive integer $k$, there is a constant $C=C(k)$, so that given any graph $G$, one can remove from $G$ at most $C$ vertices and thus obtain a new graph $G'$ that contains at least $\min\{k,|G|-C\}$ vertices of the same degree. Our main tool is a multidimensional zero-sum theorem for integer sequences, which we prove using an old geometric approach of Alon and Berman.
What is Ramsey-equivalent to a clique?
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph G is Ramsey for H if every two-colouring of the edges of G contains a monochromatic copy of H. Two graphs H and H' are Ramsey-equivalent if every graph G is Ramsey for H if and only if it is Ramsey for H'. In this paper, we study the problem of determining which graphs are Ramsey-equivalent to the complete graph K_k. A famous theorem of Nesetril and Rodl implies that any graph H which is Ramsey-equivalent to K_k must contain K_k. We prove that the only connected graph which is Ramsey-equivalent to K_k is itself. This gives a negative answer to the question of Szabo, Zumstein, and Zurcher on whether K_k is Ramsey-equivalent to K_k.K_2, the graph on k+1 vertices consisting of K_k with a pendent edge. In fact, we prove a stronger result. A graph G is Ramsey minimal for a graph H if it is Ramsey for H but no proper subgraph of G is Ramsey for H. Let s(H) be the smallest minimum degree over all Ramsey minimal graphs for H. The study of s(H) was introduced by Burr, Erdos, and Lovasz, where they show that s(K_k)=(k-1)^2. We prove that s(K_k.K_2)=k-1, and hence K_k and K_k.K_2 are not Ramsey-equivalent. We also address the question of which non-connected graphs are Ramsey-equivalent to K_k. Let f(k,t) be the maximum f such that the graph H=K_k+fK_t, consisting of K_k and f disjoint copies of K_t, is Ramsey-equivalent to K_k. Szabo, Zumstein, and Zurcher gave a lower bound on f(k,t). We prove an upper bound on f(k,t) which is roughly within a factor 2 of the lower bound.

Bipartite Rigidity
Published • View Publication • BIB
We develop a bipartite rigidity theory for bipartite graphs parallel to the classical rigidity theory for general graphs, and define for two positive integers $k,l$ the notions of $(k,l)$-rigid and $(k,l)$-stress free bipartite graphs. This theory coincides with the study of Babson--Novik's balanced shifting restricted to graphs. We establish bipartite analogs of the cone, contraction, deletion, and gluing lemmas, and apply these results to derive a bipartite analog of the rigidity criterion for planar graphs. Our result asserts that for a planar bipartite graph $G$ its balanced shifting, $G^b$, does not contain $K_{3,3}$; equivalently, planar bipartite graphs are generically $(2,2)$-stress free. We also discuss potential applications of this theory to Jockusch's cubical lower bound conjecture and to upper bound conjectures for embedded simplicial complexes.
Bipartite Minors
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a notion of bipartite minors and prove a bipartite analog of Wagner's theorem: a bipartite graph is planar if and only if it does not contain $K_{3,3}$ as a bipartite minor. Similarly, we provide a forbidden minor characterization for outerplanar graphs and forests. We then establish a recursive characterization of bipartite $(2,2)$-Laman graphs --- a certain family of graphs that contains all maximal bipartite planar graphs.

Note on the subgraph component polynomial
Published • View Publication • BIB
Tittmann, Averbouch and Makowsky [P. Tittmann, I. Averbouch, J.A. Makowsky, The enumeration of vertex induced subgraphs with respect to the number of components, European Journal of Combinatorics, 32 (2011) 954-974], introduced the subgraph component polynomial $Q(G;x,y)$ which counts the number of connected components in vertex induced subgraphs. It contains much of the underlying graph's structural information, e.g. the order, the size, the independence number. We show that there are several other graph invariants, like the connectivity, the number of cycles of length four in a regular bipartite graph, are determined by the subgraph component polynomial. Using the obtained results, we find several well-known families of graphs are determined by $Q(G;x,y)$: paths, cycles, tadpole graphs, complete bipartite graphs, friendship graphs, book graphs and hypercubes. Moreover, we study the distinguish power and find some simple graphs which are not distinguished by the subgraph component polynomial but distinguished by the Tutte polynomial and the character polynomial. These are answers to three questions concerning the subgraph component polynomial proposed by Tittmann et al.

An Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem for subset partitions
Published in Involve 8 (2015) 119-127 • View Publication • BIB
A $k\ell$-subset partition, or $(k,\ell)$-subpartition, is a $k\ell$-subset of an $n$-set that is partitioned into $\ell$ distinct classes, each of size $k$. Two $(k,\ell)$-subpartitions are said to $t$-intersect if they have at least $t$ classes in common. In this paper, we prove an Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem for intersecting families of $(k,\ell)$-subpartitions. We show that for $n \geq k\ell$, $\ell \geq 2$ and $k \geq 3$, the largest $1$-intersecting family contains at most $\frac{1}{(\ell-1)!}\binom{n-k}{k}\binom{n-2k}{k}\cdots\binom{n-(\ell-1)k}{k}$ $(k,\ell)$-subpartitions, and that this bound is only attained by the family of $(k,\ell)$-subpartitions with a common fixed class, known as the \emph{canonical intersecting family of $(k,\ell)$-subpartitions}. Further, provided that $n$ is sufficiently large relative to $k,\ell$ and $t$, the largest $t$-intersecting family is the family of $(k,\ell)$-subpartitions that contain a common set of $t$ fixed classes.

Universality of random graphs and rainbow embedding
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we show how to use simple partitioning lemmas in order to embed spanning graphs in a typical member of $G(n,p)$. Let the \emph{maximum density} of a graph $H$ be the maximum average degree of all the subgraphs of $H$. First, we show that for $p=ω(Δ^{12} n^{-1/2d}\log^3n)$, a graph $G\sim G(n,p)$ w.h.p.\ contains copies of all spanning graphs $H$ with maximum degree at most $Δ$ and maximum density at most $d$. For $d<Δ/2$, this improves a result of Dellamonica, Kohayakawa, Rödl and Rucińcki. Next, we show that if we additionally restrict the spanning graphs to have girth at least 7 then the random graph contains w.h.p.\ all such graphs for $p=ω(Δ^{12} n^{-1/d}\log^3n)$. In particular, if $p=ω(Δ^{12} n^{-1/2}\log^3 n)$, the random graph therefore contains w.h.p.\ every spanning tree with maximum degree bounded by $Δ$. This improves a result of Johannsen, Krivelevich and Samotij. Finally, in the same spirit, we show that for any spanning graph $H$ with constant maximum degree, and for suitable $p$, if we randomly color the edges of a graph $G\sim G(n,p)$ with $(1 + o(1))|E(H)|$ colors, then w.h.p.\ there exists a \emph{rainbow} copy of $H$ in $G$ (that is, a copy of $H$ with all edges colored with distinct colors).

Sparse halves in dense triangle-free graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Erdős conjectured that every triangle-free graph $G$ on $n$ vertices contains a set of $\lfloor n/2 \rfloor$ vertices that spans at most $n^2 /50$ edges. Krivelevich proved the conjecture for graphs with minimum degree at least $\frac{2}{5}n$. Keevash and Sudakov improved this result to graphs with average degree at least $\frac{2}{5}n$. We strengthen these results by showing that the conjecture holds for graphs with minimum degree at least $\frac{5}{14}n$ and for graphs with average degree at least $(\frac{2}{5} - \varepsilon)n$ for some absolute $\varepsilon >0$. Moreover, we show that the conjecture is true for graphs which are close to the Petersen graph in edit distance.

Collision Times in Multicolor Urn Models and Sequential Graph Coloring With Applications to Discrete Logarithms
Published • View Publication • BIB
Consider an urn model where at each step one of $q$ colors is sampled according to some probability distribution and a ball of that color is placed in an urn. The distribution of assigning balls to urns may depend on the color of the ball. Collisions occur when a ball is placed in an urn which already contains a ball of different color. Equivalently, this can be viewed as sequentially coloring a complete $q$-partite graph wherein a collision corresponds to the appearance of a monochromatic edge. Using a Poisson embedding technique, the limiting distribution of the first collision time is determined and the possible limits are explicitly described. Joint distribution of successive collision times and multi-fold collision times are also derived. The results can be used to obtain the limiting distributions of running times in various birthday problem based algorithms for solving the discrete logarithm problem, generalizing previous results which only consider expected running times. Asymptotic distributions of the time of appearance of a monochromatic edge are also obtained for other graphs.
