Analytic combinatorics of connected graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We enumerate the connected graphs that contain a number of edges growing linearly with respect to the number of vertices. So far, only the first term of the asymptotics and a bound on the error were known. Using analytic combinatorics, ie generating function manipulations, we derive a formula for the coefficients of the complete asymptotic expansion. The same result is derived for connected multigraphs.
Subdivisions of oriented cycles in digraphs with large chromatic number
Published • View Publication • BIB
An oriented cycle is an orientation of a undirected cycle. We first show that for any oriented cycle $C$, there are digraphs containing no subdivision of $C$ (as a subdigraph) and arbitrarily large chromatic number. In contrast, we show that for any $C$ a cycle with two blocks, every strongly connected digraph with sufficiently large chromatic number contains a subdivision of $C$. We prove a similar result for the antidirected cycle on four vertices (in which two vertices have out-degree $2$ and two vertices have in-degree $2$).

A proof of Mader's conjecture on large clique subdivisions in $C_4$-free graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given any integers $s,t\geq 2$, we show there exists some $c=c(s,t)>0$ such that any $K_{s,t}$-free graph with average degree $d$ contains a subdivision of a clique with at least $cd^{\frac{1}{2}\frac{s}{s-1}}$ vertices. In particular, when $s=2$ this resolves in a strong sense the conjecture of Mader in 1999 that every $C_4$-free graph has a subdivision of a clique with order linear in the average degree of the original graph. In general, the widely conjectured asymptotic behaviour of the extremal density of $K_{s,t}$-free graphs suggests our result is tight up to the constant $c(s,t)$.
Antistrong digraphs

An antidirected trail in a digraph is a trail (a walk with no arc repeated) in which the arcs alternate between forward and backward arcs. An antidirected path is an antidirected trail where no vertex is repeated. We show that it is NP-complete to decide whether two vertices $x,y$ in a digraph are connected by an antidirected path, while one can decide in linear time whether they are connected by an antidirected trail. A digraph $D$ is antistrong if it contains an antidirected $(x,y)$-trail starting and ending with a forward arc for every choice of $x,y\in V(D)$. We show that antistrong connectivity can be decided in linear time. We discuss relations between antistrong connectivity and other properties of a digraph and show that the arc-minimal antistrong spanning subgraphs of a digraph are the bases of a matroid on its arc-set. We show that one can determine in polynomial time the minimum number of new arcs whose addition to $D$ makes the resulting digraph the arc-disjoint union of $k$ antistrong digraphs. In particular, we determine the minimum number of new arcs which need to be added to a digraph to make it antistrong. We use results from matroid theory to characterize graphs which have an antistrong orientation and give a polynomial time algorithm for constructing such an orientation when it exists. This immediately gives analogous results for graphs which have a connected bipartite 2-detachment. Finally, we study arc-decompositions of antistrong digraphs and pose several problems and conjectures.
Edge-colorings of graphs avoiding complete graphs with a prescribed coloring
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a graph $F$ and an integer $r \ge 2$, a partition $\widehat{F}$ of the edge set of $F$ into at most $r$ classes, and a graph $G$, define $c_{r, \widehat{F}}(G)$ as the number of $r$-colorings of the edges of $G$ that do not contain a copy of $F$ such that the edge partition induced by the coloring is isomorphic to the one of $F$. We think of $\widehat{F}$ as the pattern of coloring that should be avoided. The main question is, for a large enough $n$, to find the (extremal) graph $G$ on $n$ vertices which maximizes $c_{r, \widehat{F}}(G)$. This problem generalizes a question of Erd{\H o}s and Rothschild, who originally asked about the number of colorings not containing a monochromatic clique (which is equivalent to the case where $F$ is a clique and the partition $\widehat{F}$ contains a single class). We use Hölder's Inequality together with Zykov's Symmetrization to prove that, for any $r \geq 2$, $k \geq 3$ and any pattern $\widehat{K_k}$ of the clique $K_k$, there exists a complete multipartite graph that is extremal. Furthermore, if the pattern $\widehat{K_k}$ has at least two classes, with the possible exception of two very small patterns (on three or four vertices), every extremal graph must be a complete multipartite graph. In the case that $r=3$ and $\widehat{F}$ is a rainbow triangle (that is, where $F=K_3$ and each part is a singleton), we show that an extremal graph must be an almost complete graph. Still for $r=3$, we extend a result about monochromatic patterns of Alon, Balogh, Keevash and Sudakov to some patterns that use two of the three colors, finding the exact extremal graph. For the later two results, we use the Regularity and Stability Method.

How many random edges make a dense graph hamiltonian?
Published in Random Structures Algorithms 22(1) (2003), 33--42 • View Publication • BIB
This paper investigates the number of random edges required to add to an arbitrary dense graph in order to make the resulting graph hamiltonian with high probability. Adding $Θ(n)$ random edges is both necessary and sufficient to ensure this for all such dense graphs. If, however, the original graph contains no large independent set, then many fewer random edges are required. We prove a similar result for directed graphs.

Sarkozy's theorem in function fields
Published • View Publication • BIB
Sárközy proved that dense sets of integers contain two elements differing by a $k$th power. The bounds in quantitative versions of this theorem are rather weak compared to what is expected. We prove a version of Sárközy's theorem for polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_q$ with polynomial dependencies in the parameters. More precisely, let $P_{q,n}$ be the space of polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_q$ of degree $< n$ in an indeterminate $T$. Let $k \geq 2$ be an integer and let $q$ be a prime power. Set $c(k,q) := (2 k^2 D_q(k)^2\log q)^{-1}$, where $D_q(k)$ is the sum of the digits of $k$ in base $q$. If $A \subset P_{q,n}$ is a set with $|A| > 2q^{(1 - c(k,q))n}$, then $A$ contains distinct polynomials $p(T), p'(T)$ such that $p(T) - p'(T) = b(T)^k$ for some $b \in \mathbb{F}_q[T]$.

Degree versions of the Erdos-Ko-Rado Theorem and Erdos hypergraph matching conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
We use an algebraic method to prove a degree version of the celebrated Erd\H os-Ko-Rado theorem: given $n>2k$, every intersecting $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ on $n$ vertices contains a vertex that lies on at most $\binom{n-2}{k-2}$ edges. This result can be viewed as a special case of the degree version of a well-known conjecture of Erdős on hypergraph matchings. Improving the work of Bollobás, Daykin, and Erd\H os from 1976, we show that given integers $n, k, s$ with $n\ge 3k^2 s$, every $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ on $n$ vertices with minimum vertex degree greater than $\binom{n-1}{k-1}-\binom{n-s}{k-1}$ contains $s$ disjoint edges.
On randomly generated intersecting hypergraphs II

Let $c$ be a positive constant. Suppose that $r=o(n^{5/12})$ and the members of $\binom{[n]}{r}$ are chosen sequentially at random to form an intersecting hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$. We show that whp $\mathcal{H}$ consists of a simple hypergraph $\mathcal{S}$ of size $Θ(r/n^{1/3})$, a distinguished vertex $v$ and all $r$-sets which contain $v$ and meet every edge of $\mathcal{S}$. This is a continuation of the study of such random intersecting systems started in [Electron. J. Combin, (2003) R29] where the case $r=O(n^{1/3})$ was considered. To obtain the stated result we continue to investigate this question in the range $ω(n^{1/3})\le r \le o(n^{5/12})$.

A rainbow $r$-partite version of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $f(n,r,k)$ be the minimal number such that every hypergraph larger than $f(n,r,k)$ contained in $\binom{[n]}{r}$ contains a matching of size $k$, and let $g(n,r,k)$ be the minimal number such that every hypergraph larger than $g(n,r,k)$ contained in the $r$-partite $r$-graph $[n]^{r}$ contains a matching of size $k$. The Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem states that $f(n,r,2)=\binom{n-1}{r-1}$~~($r \le \frac{n}{2}$) and it is easy to show that $g(n,r,k)=(k-1)n^{r-1}$. The conjecture inspiring this paper is that if $F_1,F_2,\ldots,F_k\subseteq \binom{[n]}{r}$ are of size larger than $f(n,r,k)$ or $F_1,F_2,\ldots,F_k\subseteq [n]^{r}$ are of size larger than $g(n,r,k)$ then there exists a rainbow matching, i.e. a choice of disjoint edges $f_i \in F_i$. In this paper we deal mainly with the second part of the conjecture, and prove it for $r\le 3$. \vspace{.1cm} We also prove that for every $r$ and $k$ there exists $n_0=n_0(r,k)$ such that the $r$-partite version of the conjecture is true for $n>n_0$.

On the strong chromatic number of graphs
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 20(3) (2006), 741--747 • View Publication • BIB
The strong chromatic number, $χ_S(G)$, of an $n$-vertex graph $G$ is the smallest number $k$ such that after adding $k\lceil n/k\rceil-n$ isolated vertices to $G$ and considering {\bf any} partition of the vertices of the resulting graph into disjoint subsets $V_1, \ldots, V_{\lceil n/k\rceil}$ of size $k$ each, one can find a proper $k$-vertex-coloring of the graph such that each part $V_i$, $i=1, \ldots, \lceil n/k\rceil$, contains exactly one vertex of each color. For any graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ$, it is easy to see that $χ_S(G)\geqΔ+1$. Recently, Haxell proved that $χ_S(G) \leq 3Δ-1$. In this paper, we improve this bound for graphs with large maximum degree. We show that $χ_S(G)\leq 2Δ$ if $Δ\geq n/6$ and prove that this bound is sharp.

The emergence of a giant component in random subgraphs of pseudo-random graphs

Let $G$ be a $d$-regular graph $G$ on $n$ vertices. Suppose that the adjacency matrix of $G$ is such that the eigenvalue $λ$ which is second largest in absolute value satisfies $λ=o(d)$. Let $G_p$ with $p=\fracα{d}$ be obtained from $G$ by including each edge of $G$ independently with probability $p$. We show that if $α<1$ then whp the maximum component size of $G_p$ is $O(\log n)$ and if $α>1$ then $G_p$ contains a unique giant component of size $Ω(n)$, with all other components of size $O(\log n)$.

Let $G$ be a tripartite graph with $N$ vertices in each vertex class. If each vertex is adjacent to at least $(2/3)N$ vertices in each of the other classes, then either $G$ contains a subgraph that consists of $N$ vertex-disjoint triangles or $G$ is a specific graph in which each vertex is adjacent to exactly $(2/3)N$ vertices in each of the other classes.

Colorful Subhypergraphs in Uniform Hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
There are several topological results ensuring the existence of a large complete bipartite subgraph in any properly colored graph satisfying some special topological regularity conditions. In view of $\mathbb{Z}_p$-Tucker lemma, Alishahi and Hajiabolhassan [{\it On the chromatic number of general Kneser hypergraphs, Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B, 2015}] introduced a lower bound for the chromatic number of Kneser hypergraphs ${\rm KG}^r({\mathcal H})$. Next, Meunier [{\it Colorful subhypergraphs in Kneser hypergraphs, The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 2014}] improved their result by proving that any properly colored general Kneser hypergraph ${\rm KG}^r({\mathcal H})$ contains a large colorful $r$-partite subhypergraph provided that $r$ is prime. In this paper, we give some new generalizations of $\mathbb{Z}_p$-Tucker lemma. Hence, improving Meunier's result in some aspects. Some new lower bounds for the chromatic number and local chromatic number of uniform hypergraphs are presented as well.

Packing graphs of bounded codegree
Published • View Publication • BIB
Two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ on $n$ vertices are said to pack if there exist injective mappings of their vertex sets into $[n]$ such that the images of their edge sets are disjoint. A longstanding conjecture due to Bollobás and Eldridge and, independently, Catlin, asserts that, if $(Δ_1(G)+1) (Δ_2(G)+1) \le n+1$, then $G_1$ and $G_2$ pack. We consider the validity of this assertion under the additional assumption that $G_1$ or $G_2$ has bounded codegree. In particular, we prove for all $t \ge 2$ that, if $G_1$ contains no copy of the complete bipartite graph $K_{2,t}$ and $Δ_1 > 17 t \cdot Δ_2$, then $(Δ_1(G)+1) (Δ_2(G)+1) \le n+1$ implies that $G_1$ and $G_2$ pack. We also provide a mild improvement if moreover $G_2$ contains no copy of the complete tripartite graph $K_{1,1,s}$, $s\ge 1$.

On Avoider-Enforcer games
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 23(2) (2009), 901--908 • View Publication • BIB
In the Avoider-Enforcer game on the complete graph $K_n$, the players (Avoider and Enforcer) each take an edge in turn. Given a graph property $\mathcal{P}$, Enforcer wins the game if Avoider's graph has the property $\mathcal{P}$. An important parameter is $τ_E({\cal P})$, the smallest integer $t$ such that Enforcer can win the game against any opponent in $t$ rounds. In this paper, let $\mathcal{F}$ be an arbitrary family of graphs and $\mathcal{P}$ be the property that a member of $\mathcal{F}$ is a subgraph or is an induced subgraph. We determine the asymptotic value of $τ_E(\mathcal{P})$ when $\mathcal{F}$ contains no bipartite graph and establish that $τ_E(\mathcal{P})=o(n^2)$ if $\mathcal{F}$ contains a bipartite graph. The proof uses the game of JumbleG and the Szemerédi Regularity Lemma.

Edit distance and its computation
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 15(1) (2008), Research Paper 20, 27pp • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we provide a method for determining the asymptotic value of the maximum edit distance from a given hereditary property. This method permits the edit distance to be computed without using Szemerédi's Regularity Lemma directly. Using this new method, we are able to compute the edit distance from hereditary properties for which it was previously unknown. For some graphs $H$, the edit distance from ${\rm Forb}(H)$ is computed, where ${\rm forb}(H)$ is the class of graphs which contain no induced copy of graph $H$. Those graphs for which we determine the edit distance asymptotically are $H=K_a+E_b$, an $a$-clique with $b$ isolated vertices, and $H=K_{3,3}$, a complete bipartite graph. We also provide a graph, the first such construction, for which the edit distance cannot be determined just by considering partitions of the vertex set into cliques and cocliques. In the process, we develop weighted generalizations of Turán's theorem, which may be of independent interest.

The Erdős-Rothschild problem on edge-colourings with forbidden monochromatic cliques
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathbf{k} := (k_1,\dots,k_s)$ be a sequence of natural numbers. For a graph $G$, let $F(G;\mathbf{k})$ denote the number of colourings of the edges of $G$ with colours $1,\dots,s$ such that, for every $c \in \{1,\dots,s\}$, the edges of colour $c$ contain no clique of order $k_c$. Write $F(n;\mathbf{k})$ to denote the maximum of $F(G;\mathbf{k})$ over all graphs $G$ on $n$ vertices. This problem was first considered by Erdős and Rothschild in 1974, but it has been solved only for a very small number of non-trivial cases. We prove that, for every $\mathbf{k}$ and $n$, there is a complete multipartite graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $F(G;\mathbf{k}) = F(n;\mathbf{k})$. Also, for every $\mathbf{k}$ we construct a finite optimisation problem whose maximum is equal to the limit of $\log_2 F(n;\mathbf{k})/{n\choose 2}$ as $n$ tends to infinity. Our final result is a stability theorem for complete multipartite graphs $G$, describing the asymptotic structure of such $G$ with $F(G;\mathbf{k}) = F(n;\mathbf{k}) \cdot 2^{o(n^2)}$ in terms of solutions to the optimisation problem.

For any set $Ω$ of non-negative integers such that $\{0,1\}\subseteq Ω$ and $\{0,1\}\ne Ω$, we consider a random $Ω$-$k$-tree ${\sf G}_{n,k}$ that is uniformly selected from all connected $k$-trees of $(n+k)$ vertices where the number of $(k+1)$-cliques that contain any fixed $k$-clique belongs to $Ω$. We prove that ${\sf G}_{n,k}$, scaled by $(kH_{k}σ_Ω)/(2\sqrt{n})$ where $H_{k}$ is the $k$-th Harmonic number and $σ_Ω>0$, converges to the Continuum Random Tree $\mathcal{T}_{\sf e}$. Furthermore, we prove the local convergence of the rooted random $Ω$-$k$-tree ${\sf G}_{n,k}^{\circ}$ to an infinite but locally finite random $Ω$-$k$-tree ${\sf G}_{\infty,k}$.
