On solution-free sets of integers II
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a linear equation $\mathcal{L}$, a set $A \subseteq [n]$ is $\mathcal{L}$-free if $A$ does not contain any `non-trivial' solutions to $\mathcal{L}$. We determine the precise size of the largest $\mathcal{L}$-free subset of $[n]$ for several general classes of linear equations $\mathcal{L}$ of the form $px+qy=rz$ for fixed $p,q,r \in \mathbb N$ where $p \geq q \geq r$. Further, for all such linear equations $\mathcal{L}$, we give an upper bound on the number of maximal $\mathcal{L}$-free subsets of $[n]$. In the case when $p=q\geq 2$ and $r=1$ this bound is exact up to an error term in the exponent. We make use of container and removal lemmas of Green to prove this result. Our results also extend to various linear equations with more than three variables.

On multicolor Ramsey number for 3-paths of length three
We show that if we color the hyperedges of the complete $3$-uniform complete graph on $2n+\sqrt{18n+1}+2$ vertices with $n$ colors, then one of the color classes contains a loose path of length three.

Laplacian integrality in P4-sparse and P4-extendible graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let G be a simple graph and L = L(G) the Laplacian matrix of G. G is called L-integral if all its Laplacian eigenvalues are integer numbers. It is known that every cograph, a graph free of P4, is L-integral. The class of P4-sparse graphs and the class of P4-extendible graphs contain the cographs. It seems natural to investigate if the graphs in these classes are still L-integral. In this paper we characterized the L-integral graphs for both cases, P4-sparse graphs and P4-extendible graphs.

On the number of three-term arithmetic progressions in a dense subset of $F_q^n$
Let $q$ be an odd prime power. Combining the discussion of Varnavides and a recent theorem of Ellenberg and Gijswijt, we show that a subset $A\subset{\mathbb F}_q^n$ will contain many non-trivial three-term arithmetic progressions, whenever $|A|\geq (c_q q)^n$ for some constant $c_q>0$. After the first version of our manuscript was uploaded in the arXiv, we learned from Professors Jacob Fox and Terence Tao that our result is a special case of a result of Fox and Lovasz [1, Theorem 3]. In fact, [1, Theorem 3] gives a much better bound than ours. For example, when $q=3$, the lower bound given by Fox and Lovasz is $|A|^{2}\cdot (|A|q^{-n})^{11.901}$, while our bound is $|A|^{2}\cdot (|A|q^{-n})^{25.803}$. We thank Professors Jacob Fox and Terence Tao for their helpful comments on our manuscript. A generalization of Tuza's conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
A famous conjecture of Tuza \cite{tuza} is that the minimal number of edges needed to cover all triangles in a graph is at most twice the maximal number of edge-disjoint triangles. We propose a wider setting for this conjecture. For a hypergraph $H$ let $ν^{(m)}(H)$ be the maximal size of a collection of edges, no two of which share $m$ or more vertices, and let $τ^{(m)}(H)$ be the minimal size of a collection $C$ of sets of $m$ vertices, such that every edge in $H$ contains a set from $C$. We conjecture that the maximal ratio $τ^{(m)}(H)/ν^{(m)}(H)$ is attained in hypergraphs for which $ν^{(m)}(H)=1$. This would imply, in particular, the following generalization of Tuza's conjecture: if $H$ is $3$-uniform, then $τ^{(2)}(H)/ν^{(2)}(H) \le 2$. (Tuza's conjecture is the case in which $H$ is the set of all triples of vertices of triangles in the graph). We show that most known results on Tuza's conjecture go over to this more general setting. We also prove some general results on the ratio $τ^{(m)}(H)/ν^{(m)}(H)$, and study the fractional versions and the case of $k$-partite hypergraphs.

Square of a Hamilton cycle in a random graph
We show that the threshold for the random graph $G_{n,p}$ to contain the square of a Hamilton cycle is $p=\frac{1}{\sqrt{n}}$. This improves the previous results of Kühn and Osthus and also Nenadov and Škorić. In addition we consider how many random edges need to be added to a graph of order $n$ with minimum degree $αn$ in order that it contains the square of a Hamilton cycle w.h.p.

Nonempty intersection of longest paths in $2K_2$-free graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 1966, Gallai asked whether all longest paths in a connected graph share a common vertex. Counterexamples indicate that this is not true in general. However, Gallai's question is positive for certain well-known classes of connected graphs, such as split graphs, interval graphs, circular arc graphs, outerplanar graphs, and series-parallel graphs. A graph is $2K_2$-free if it does not contain two independent edges as an induced subgraph. In this paper, we show that in nonempty $2K_2$-free graphs, every vertex of maximum degree is common to all longest paths. Our result implies that all longest paths in a nonempty $2K_2$-free graph have a nonempty intersection. In particular, it gives a new proof for the result on split graphs, as split graphs are $2K_2$-free.

Finite sets of operations sufficient to construct any fullerene from $C_{20}$
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the well-known problem of combinatorial classification of fullerenes. By a (mathematical) fullerene we mean a convex simple three dimensional polytope with all facets pentagons and hexagons. We analyse approaches of construction of arbitrary fullerene from the dodecahedron (a fullerene $C_{20}$). A growth operation is a combinatorial operation that substitutes the patch with more facets and the same boundary for the patch on the surface of a simple polytope to produce a new simple polytope. It is known that an infinite set of different growth operations transforming fullerenes into fullerenes is needed to construct any fullerene from the dodecahedron. We prove that if we allow a polytope to contain one exceptional facet, which is a quadrangle or a heptagon, then a finite set of growth operation is sufficient. We analyze pairs of objects: a finite set of operations, and a family of acceptable polytopes containing fullerenes such that any polytope of the family can be obtained from the dodecahedron by a sequence of operations from the corresponding set. We describe explicitly three such pairs. First two pairs contain seven operations, and the last -- eleven operations. Each of these operations corresponds to a finite set of growth operations and is a composition of edge- and two edges-truncations.

Density of monochromatic infinite subgraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For any countably infinite graph $G$, Ramsey's theorem guarantees an infinite monochromatic copy of $G$ in any $r$-coloring of the edges of the countably infinite complete graph $K_\mathbb{N}$. Taking this a step further, it is natural to wonder how "large" of a monochromatic copy of $G$ we can find with respect to some measure -- for instance, the density (or upper density) of the vertex set of $G$ in the positive integers. Unlike finite Ramsey theory, where this question has been studied extensively, the analogous problem for infinite graphs has been mostly overlooked. In one of the few results in the area, Erdős and Galvin proved that in every 2-coloring of $K_\mathbb{N}$, there exists a monochromatic path whose vertex set has upper density at least $2/3$, but it is not possible to do better than $8/9$. They also showed that for some sequence $ε_n\to 0$, there exists a monochromatic path $P$ such that for infinitely many $n$, the set $\{1,2,...,n\}$ contains the first $(\frac{1}{3+\sqrt{3}}-ε_n)n$ vertices of $P$, but it is not possible to do better than $2n/3$. We improve both results, in the former case achieving an upper density at least $3/4$ and in the latter case obtaining a tight bound of $2/3$. We also consider related problems for directed paths, trees (connected subgraphs), and a more general result which includes locally finite graphs for instance.

Star-factors in graphs of high degree

We prove that every graph with sufficiently large minimum degree $d$ contains a spanning forest in which every component is a star of size at least $\sqrt{d} - \tilde O(d^{1/4})$. This improves the result of Alon and Wormald and is optimal up to the lower order term.

Properties of chromatic polynomials of hypergraphs not held for chromatic polynomials of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we present some properties on chromatic polynomials of hypergraphs which do not hold for chromatic polynomials of graphs. We first show that chromatic polynomials of hypergraphs have all integers as their zeros and contain dense real zeros in the set of real numbers. We then prove that for any multigraph $G=(V,E)$, the number of totally cyclic orientations of $G$ is equal to the value of $|P(H,-1)|$, where $P(H,λ)$ is the chromatic polynomial of a hypergraph $H$ which is constructed from $G$. Finally we show that the multiplicity of root "$0$" of $P(H,λ)$ may be at least $2$ for some connected hypergraphs $H$, and the multiplicity of root "$1$" of $P(H,λ)$ may be $1$ for some connected and separable hypergraphs $H$ and may be $2$ for some connected and non-separable hypergraphs $H$.

Combinatorics of cyclic shifts in plactic, hypoplactic, sylvester, and related monoids
Published • View Publication • BIB
The cyclic shift graph of a monoid is the graph whose vertices are elements of the monoid and whose edges link elements that differ by a cyclic shift. For certain monoids connected with combinatorics, such as the plactic monoid (the monoid of Young tableaux) and the sylvester monoid (the monoid of binary search trees), connected components consist of elements that have the same evaluation (that is, contain the same number of each generating symbol). This paper discusses new results on the diameters of connected components of the cyclic shift graphs of the finite-rank analogues of these monoids, showing that the maximum diameter of a connected component is dependent only on the rank. The proof techniques are explained in the case of the sylvester monoid.

When is a scale-free graph ultra-small?
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we study typical distances in the configuration model, when the degrees have asymptotically infinite variance. We assume that the empirical degree distribution follows a power law with exponent $τ\in (2,3)$, up to value $n^{β_n}$ for some $β_n\gg (\log n)^{-γ}$ and $γ\in(0,1)$. This assumption is satisfied for power law i.i.d. degrees, and also includes truncated power-law distributions where the (possibly exponential) truncation happens at $n^{β_n}$. We show that the graph distance between two uniformly chosen vertices centers around $2 \log \log (n^{β_n}) / |\log (τ-2)| + 1/(β_n(3-τ))$, with tight fluctuations. Thus, the graph is an \emph{ultrasmall world} whenever $1/β_n=o(\log\log n)$. We determine the distribution of the fluctuations around this value, in particular we prove that these are non-converging tight random variables that show $\log \log$-periodicity. We describe the topology and number of shortest paths: We show that the number of shortest paths is of order $n^{f_nβ_n}$, where $f_n \in (0,1)$ is a random variable that oscillates with $n$. The two end-segments of any shortest path have length $\log \log (n^{β_n}) / |\log (τ-2)|$+tight, and the total degree is increasing towards the middle of the path on these segments. The connecting middle segment has length $1/(β_n(3-τ))$+tight, and it contains only vertices with degree at least of order $n^{(1-f_n)β_n}$, thus all the degrees on this segment are comparable to the maximal degree. Our theorems also apply when instead of truncating the degrees, we start with a configuration model and we remove every vertex with degree at least $n^{β_n}$, and the edges attached to these vertices. This sheds light on the attack vulnerability of the configuration model with infinite variance degrees.

Maximising $H$-Colourings of Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For graphs $G$ and $H$, an $H$-colouring of $G$ is a map $ψ:V(G)\rightarrow V(H)$ such that $ij\in E(G)\Rightarrowψ(i)ψ(j)\in E(H)$. The number of $H$-colourings of $G$ is denoted by $\hom(G,H)$. We prove the following: for all graphs $H$ and $δ\geq3$, there is a constant $κ(δ,H)$ such that, if $n\geqκ(δ,H)$, the graph $K_{δ,n-δ}$ maximises the number of $H$-colourings among all connected graphs with $n$ vertices and minimum degree $δ$. This answers a question of Engbers. We also disprove a conjecture of Engbers on the graph $G$ that maximises the number of $H$-colourings when the assumption of the connectivity of $G$ is dropped. Finally, let $H$ be a graph with maximum degree $k$. We show that, if $H$ does not contain the complete looped graph on $k$ vertices or $K_{k,k}$ as a component and $δ\geqδ_0(H)$, then the following holds: for $n$ sufficiently large, the graph $K_{δ,n-δ}$ maximises the number of $H$-colourings among all graphs on $n$ vertices with minimum degree $δ$. This partially answers another question of Engbers.
Minimum vertex degree condition for tight Hamiltonian cycles in 3-uniform hypergraphs

We show that every 3-uniform hypergraph with $n$ vertices and minimum vertex degree at least $(5/9+o(1))\binom{n}2$ contains a tight Hamiltonian cycle. Known lower bound constructions show that this degree condition is asymptotically optimal.

Ramsey goodness of bounded degree trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a pair of graphs $G$ and $H$, the Ramsey number $R(G,H)$ is the smallest $N$ such that every red-blue coloring of the edges of the complete graph $K_N$ contains a red copy of $G$ or a blue copy of $H$. If a graph $G$ is connected, it is well known and easy to show that $R(G,H) \geq (|G|-1)(χ(H)-1)+σ(H)$, where $χ(H)$ is the chromatic number of $H$ and $σ(H)$ is the size of the smallest color class in a $χ(H)$-coloring of $H$. A graph $G$ is called $H$-good if $R(G,H)= (|G|-1)(χ(H)-1)+σ(H)$. The notion of Ramsey goodness was introduced by Burr and Erdős in 1983 and has been extensively studied since then. In this paper we show that if $n\geq Ω(|H| \log^4 |H|)$ then every $n$-vertex bounded degree tree $T$ is $H$-good. The dependency between $n$ and $|H|$ is tight up to $\log$ factors. This substantially improves a result of Erdős, Faudree, Rousseau, and Schelp from 1985, who proved that $n$-vertex bounded degree trees are $H$-good when when $n \geq Ω(|H|^4)$.

A note on Reed's Conjecture about $ω$, $Δ$ and $χ$ with respect to vertices of high degree
Reed conjectured that for every graph, $χ\leq \left \lceil \frac{Δ+ ω+ 1}{2} \right \rceil$ holds, where $χ$, $ω$ and $Δ$ denote the chromatic number, clique number and maximum degree of the graph, respectively. We develop an algorithm which takes a hypothetical counterexample as input. The output discloses some hidden structures closely related to high vertex degrees. Consequently, we deduce two graph classes where Reed's Conjecture holds: One contains all graphs in which the vertices of degree at least $5$ form a stable set. The other contains all graphs in which every induced cycle of odd length contains a vertex of at most degree 3.

Hereditary quasirandomness without regularity
Published • View Publication • BIB
A result of Simonovits and Sós states that for any fixed graph $H$ and any $ε> 0$ there exists $δ> 0$ such that if $G$ is an $n$-vertex graph with the property that every $S \subseteq V(G)$ contains $p^{e(H)} |S|^{v(H)} \pm δn^{v(H)}$ labeled copies of $H$, then $G$ is quasirandom in the sense that every $S \subseteq V(G)$ contains $\frac{1}{2} p |S|^2 \pm εn^2$ edges. The original proof of this result makes heavy use of the regularity lemma, resulting in a bound on $δ^{-1}$ which is a tower of twos of height polynomial in $ε^{-1}$. We give an alternative proof of this theorem which avoids the regularity lemma and shows that $δ$ may be taken to be linear in $ε$ when $H$ is a clique and polynomial in $ε$ for general $H$. This answers a problem raised by Simonovits and Sós.

A note on the positive semidefinitness of $A_α(G)$
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a graph with adjacency matrix $A(G)$ and let $D(G)$ be the diagonal matrix of the degrees of $G$. For every real $α\in\left[ 0,1\right] $, write $A_α\left( G\right) $ for the matrix \[ A_α\left( G\right) =αD\left( G\right) +(1-α)A\left( G\right) . \] Let $α_{0}\left( G\right) $ be the smallest $α$ for which $A_α(G)$ is positive semidefinite. It is known that $α_{0}\left( G\right) \leq1/2$. The main results of this paper are: (1) if $G$ is $d$-regular then \[ α_{0}=\frac{-λ_{\min}(A(G))}{d-λ_{\min}(A(G))}, \] where $λ_{\min}(A(G))$ is the smallest eigenvalue of $A(G)$; (2) $G$ contains a bipartite component if and only if $α_{0}\left( G\right) =1/2$; (3) if $G$ is $r$-colorable, then $α_{0}\left( G\right) \geq1/r$.
