Testing hereditary properties of ordered graphs and matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider properties of edge-colored vertex-ordered graphs, i.e., graphs with a totally ordered vertex set and a finite set of possible edge colors. We show that any hereditary property of such graphs is strongly testable, i.e., testable with a constant number of queries. We also explain how the proof can be adapted to show that any hereditary property of $2$-dimensional matrices over a finite alphabet (where row and column order is not ignored) is strongly testable. The first result generalizes the result of Alon and Shapira [FOCS'05, SICOMP'08], who showed that any hereditary graph property (without vertex order) is strongly testable. The second result answers and generalizes a conjecture of Alon, Fischer and Newman [SICOMP'07] concerning testing of matrix properties. The testability is proved by establishing a removal lemma for vertex-ordered graphs. It states that for any finite or infinite family $\mathcal{F}$ of forbidden vertex-ordered graphs, and any $ε> 0$, there exist $δ> 0$ and $k$ so that any vertex-ordered graph which is $ε$-far from being $\mathcal{F}$-free contains at least $δn^{|F|}$ copies of some $F\in\mathcal{F}$ (with the correct vertex order) where $|F|\leq k$. The proof bridges the gap between techniques related to the regularity lemma, used in the long chain of papers investigating graph testing, and string testing techniques. Along the way we develop a Ramsey-type lemma for $k$-partite graphs with "undesirable" edges, stating that one can find a Ramsey-type structure in such a graph, in which the density of the undesirable edges is not much higher than the density of those edges in the graph.

Infinite rank surface cluster algebras
We generalise surface cluster algebras to the case of infinite surfaces where the surface contains finitely many accumulation points of boundary marked points. To connect different triangulations of an infinite surface, we consider infinite mutation sequences. We show transitivity of infinite mutation sequences on triangulations of an infinite surface and examine different types of mutation sequences. Moreover, we use a hyperbolic structure on an infinite surface to extend the notion of surface cluster algebras to infinite rank by giving cluster variables as lambda lengths of arcs. Furthermore, we study the structural properties of infinite rank surface cluster algebras in combinatorial terms, namely we extend "snake graph combinatorics" to give an expansion formula for cluster variables. We also show skein relations for infinite rank surface cluster algebras.

Conflict-Free Coloring of Intersection Graphs of Geometric Objects
Published • View Publication • BIB
In FOCS'2002, Even et al. introduced and studied the notion of conflict-free colorings of geometrically defined hypergraphs. They motivated it by frequency assignment problems in cellular networks. This notion has been extensively studied since then. A conflict-free coloring of a graph is a coloring of its vertices such that the neighborhood (pointed or closed) of each vertex contains a vertex whose color differs from the colors of all other vertices in that neighborhood. In this paper we study conflict-colorings of intersection graphs of geometric objects. We show that any intersection graph of n pseudo-discs in the plane admits a conflict-free coloring with O(\log n) colors, with respect to both closed and pointed neighborhoods. We also show that the latter bound is asymptotically sharp. Using our methods, we also obtain a strengthening of the two main results of Even et al. which we believe is of independent interest. In particular, in view of the original motivation to study such colorings, this strengthening suggests further applications to frequency assignment in wireless networks. Finally, we present bounds on the number of colors needed for conflict-free colorings of other classes of intersection graphs, including intersection graphs of axis-parallel rectangles and of ρ-fat objects in the plane.
Structural aspects of semigroups based on digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given any digraph $D$ without loops or multiple arcs, there is a natural construction of a semigroup $\langle D\rangle$ of transformations. To every arc $(a,b)$ of $D$ is associated the idempotent transformation $(a\to b)$ mapping $a$ to $b$ and fixing all vertices other than $a$. The semigroup $\langle D\rangle$ is generated by the idempotent transformations $(a\to b)$ for all arcs $(a,b)$ of $D$. In this paper, we consider the question of when there is a transformation in $\langle D\rangle$ containing a large cycle, and, for fixed $k\in \mathbb N$, we give a linear time algorithm to verify if $\langle D\rangle$ contains a transformation with a cycle of length $k$. We also classify those digraphs $D$ such that $\langle D\rangle$ has one of the following properties: inverse, completely regular, commutative, simple, 0-simple, a semilattice, a rectangular band, congruence-free, is $\mathscr{K}$-trivial or $\mathscr{K}$-universal where $\mathscr{K}$ is any of Green's $\mathscr{H}$-, $\mathscr{L}$-, $\mathscr{R}$-, or $\mathscr{J}$-relation, and when $\langle D\rangle$ has a left, right, or two-sided zero.

Finding and using expanders in locally sparse graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that every locally sparse graph contains a linearly sized expanding subgraph. For constants $c_1>c_2>1$, $0<α<1$, a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices is called a $(c_1,c_2,α)$-graph if it has at least $c_1n$ edges, but every vertex subset $W\subset V(G)$ of size $|W|\le αn$ spans less than $c_2|W|$ edges. We prove that every $(c_1,c_2,α)$-graph with bounded degrees contains an induced expander on linearly many vertices. The proof can be made algorithmic. We then discuss several applications of our main result to random graphs, to problems about embedding graph minors, and to positional games.

Critical classes, Kronecker products of spin characters, and the Saxl conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
Highlighting the use of critical classes, we consider constituents in Kronecker products, in particular of spin characters of the double covers of the symmetric and alternating groups. We apply results from the spin case to find constituents in Kronecker products of characters of the symmetric groups. Via this tool, we make progress on the Saxl conjecture; this claims that for a triangular number $n$, the square of the irreducible character of the symmetric group $S_n$ labelled by the staircase contains all irreducible characters of $S_n$ as constituents. We find a large number of constituents in this square which were not detected by other methods. Moreover, the investigation of Kronecker products of spin characters inspires a spin variant of Saxl's conjecture.

Fairly Dividing a Cake after Some Parts Were Burnt in the Oven
Published • View Publication • BIB
There is a heterogeneous resource that contains both good parts and bad parts, for example, a cake with some parts burnt, a land-estate with some parts heavily taxed, or a chore with some parts fun to do. The resource has to be divided fairly among $n$ agents with different preferences, each of whom has a personal value-density function on the resource. The value-density functions can accept any real value --- positive, negative or zero. Each agent should receive a connected piece and no agent should envy another agent. We prove that such a division exists for 3 agents and present preliminary positive results for larger numbers of agents.

On hypergraphs without loose cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
Recently, Mubayi and Wang showed that for $r\ge 4$ and $\ell \ge 3$, the number of $n$-vertex $r$-graphs that do not contain any loose cycle of length $\ell$ is at most $2^{O( n^{r-1} (\log n)^{(r-3)/(r-2)})}$. We improve this bound to $2^{O( n^{r-1} \log \log n) }$.

Many edge-disjoint rainbow spanning trees in general graphs
A rainbow spanning tree in an edge-colored graph is a spanning tree in which each edge is a different color. Carraher, Hartke, and Horn showed that for $n$ and $C$ large enough, if $G$ is an edge-colored copy of $K_n$ in which each color class has size at most $n/2$, then $G$ has at least $\lfloor n/(C\log n)\rfloor$ edge-disjoint rainbow spanning trees. Here we strengthen this result by showing that if $G$ is any edge-colored graph with $n$ vertices in which each color appears on at most $δ\cdotλ_1/2$ edges, where $δ\geq C\log n$ for $n$ and $C$ sufficiently large and $λ_1$ is the second-smallest eigenvalue of the normalized Laplacian matrix of $G$, then $G$ contains at least $\left\lfloor\frac{δ\cdotλ_1}{C\log n}\right\rfloor$ edge-disjoint rainbow spanning trees.
Minimum Weight Flat Antichains of Subsets
Published in Order 38, 441-453 (2021) • View Publication • BIB
Building on classical theorems of Sperner and Kruskal-Katona, we investigate antichains $\mathcal F$ in the Boolean lattice $B_n$ of all subsets of $[n]:=\{1,2,\dots,n\}$, where $\mathcal F$ is flat, meaning that it contains sets of at most two consecutive sizes, say $\mathcal F=\mathcal{A}\cup\mathcal{B}$, where $\mathcal{A}$ contains only $k$-subsets, while $\mathcal{B}$ contains only $(k-1)$-subsets. Moreover, we assume $\mathcal{A}$ consists of the first $m$ $k$-subsets in squashed (colexicographic) order, while $\mathcal{B}$ consists of all $(k-1)$-subsets not contained in the subsets in $\mathcal{A}$. Given reals $α,β>0$, we say the weight of $\mathcal F$ is $α\cdot|\mathcal{A}|+β\cdot|\mathcal{B}|$. We characterize the minimum weight antichains $\mathcal F$ for any given $n,k,α,β$, and we do the same when in addition $\mathcal F$ is a maximal antichain. We can then derive asymptotic results on both the minimum size and the minimum Lubell function.

Monochromatic paths in random tournaments
Published in Random Structures and Algorithms 54.1 (2019), 69-81 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that, with high probability, any $2$-edge-colouring of a random tournament on $n$ vertices contains a monochromatic path of length $Ω(n / \sqrt{\log n})$. This resolves a conjecture of Ben-Eliezer, Krivelevich and Sudakov and implies a nearly tight upper bound on the oriented size Ramsey number of a directed path.

On the Profile of Multiplicities of Complete Subgraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a $2$-coloring of a complete graph on $n$ vertices, for sufficiently large $n$. We prove that $G$ contains at least $n^{(\frac{1}{4} - o(1))\log n}$ monochromatic complete subgraphs of size $r$, where \[ 0.3\log n < r < 0.7\log n. \] The previously known lower bound on the total number of monochromatic complete subgraphs, due to Székely was $n^{0.1576\log n}$. We also prove that $G$ contains at least $n^{\frac{1}{7} \log n} $ monochromatic complete subgraphs of size $\frac{1}{2}\log n$. If furthermore one assumes that the largest monochromatic complete subgraph in $G$ is of size $(\frac{1}{2} + o(1))\log n$ (it is a well known open question whether such graphs exist), then for every constant $0 \le c \le \frac{1}{2}$ we determine (up to low order terms) the number of monochromatic complete subgraphs of size $c \log n$. We do so by proving a lower bound that matches (up to low order terms) a previous upper bound of Székely. For example, the number of monochromatic complete subgraphs of size $\frac{1}{2} \log n$ is $n^{\frac{1}{8}(4 - \log e \pm o(1))\log n} \simeq n^{0.32 \log n}$.
On multicolor Ramsey numbers for loose $k$-paths of length three
We show that there exists an absolute constant $A$ such that for each $k\ge2$ and every coloring of the edges of the complete $k$-uniform hypergraph on $ Ar$ vertices with $r$ colors, one of the color classes contains a loose path of length three.
The (theta, wheel)-free graphs Part II: structure theorem
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B, Volume 143, 2020, Pages 148-184 • View Publication • BIB
A theta is a graph formed by three paths between the same pair of distinct vertices so that the union of any two of the paths induces a hole. A wheel is a graph formed by a hole and a node that has at least 3 neighbors in the hole. In this paper we obtain a decomposition theorem for the class of graphs that do not contain an induced subgraph isomorphic to a theta or a wheel, i.e. the class of (theta, wheel)-free graphs. The decomposition theorem uses clique cutsets and 2-joins. Clique cutsets are vertex cutsets that work really well in decomposition based algorithms, but are unfortunately not general enough to decompose more complex hereditary graph classes. A 2-join is an edge cutset that appeared in decomposition theorems of several complex classes, such as perfect graphs, even-hole-free graphs and others. In these decomposition theorems 2-joins are used together with vertex cutsets that are more general than clique cutsets, such as star cutsets and their generalizations (which are much harder to use in algorithms). This is a first example of a decomposition theorem that uses just the combination of clique cutsets and 2-joins. This has several consequences. First, we can easily transform our decomposition theorem into a complete structure theorem for (theta, wheel)-free graphs, i.e. we show how every (theta, wheel)-free graph can be built starting from basic graphs that can be explicitly constructed, and gluing them together by prescribed composition operations; and all graphs built this way are (theta, wheel)-free. Such structure theorems are very rare for hereditary graph classes, only a few examples are known. Secondly, we obtain an $\mathcal O (n^4m)$-time decomposition based recognition algorithm for (theta, wheel)-free graphs. Finally, in Parts III and IV of this series, we give further applications of our decomposition theorem.

Forcing clique immersions through chromatic number
Published • View Publication • BIB
Building on recent work of Dvořák and Yepremyan, we show that every simple graph of minimum degree $7t+7$ contains $K_t$ as an immersion and that every graph with chromatic number at least $3.54t + 4$ contains $K_t$ as an immersion. We also show that every graph on $n$ vertices with no stable set of size three contains $K_{2\lfloor n/5 \rfloor}$ as an immersion.

Colouring exact distance graphs of chordal graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a graph $G=(V,E)$ and positive integer $p$, the exact distance-$p$ graph $G^{[\natural p]}$ is the graph with vertex set $V$ and with an edge between vertices $x$ and $y$ if and only if $x$ and $y$ have distance $p$. Recently, there has been an effort to obtain bounds on the chromatic number $χ(G^{[\natural p]})$ of exact distance-$p$ graphs for $G$ from certain classes of graphs. In particular, if a graph $G$ has tree-width $t$, it has been shown that $χ(G^{[\natural p]}) \in \mathcal{O}(p^{t-1})$ for odd $p$, and $χ(G^{[\natural p]}) \in \mathcal{O}(p^{t}Δ(G))$ for even $p$. We show that if $G$ is chordal and has tree-width $t$, then $χ(G^{[\natural p]}) \in \mathcal{O}(p\, t^2)$ for odd $p$, and $χ(G^{[\natural p]}) \in \mathcal{O}(p\, t^2 Δ(G))$ for even $p$. If we could show that for every graph $H$ of tree-width $t$ there is a chordal graph $G$ of tree-width $t$ which contains $H$ as an isometric subgraph (i.e., a distance preserving subgraph), then our results would extend to all graphs of tree-width $t$. While we cannot do this, we show that for every graph $H$ of genus $g$ there is a graph $G$ which is a triangulation of genus $g$ and contains $H$ as an isometric subgraph.

Connected sums of $Z$-knotted triangulations

An embedded graph is called $z$-knotted if it contains the unique zigzag (up to reversing). We consider $z$-knotted triangulations, i.e. $z$-knotted embedded graphs whose faces are triangles, and describe all cases when the connected sum of two $z$-knotted triangulations is $z$-knotted.

On the dimension of downsets of integer partitions and compositions
We characterize the downsets of integer partitions (ordered by containment of Ferrers diagrams) and compositions (ordered by the generalized subword order) which have finite dimension in the sense of Dushnik and Miller. In the case of partitions, while the set of all partitions has infinite dimension, we show that every proper downset of partitions has finite dimension. For compositions we identify four minimal downsets of infinite dimension and establish that every downset which does not contain one of these four has finite dimension.

The Bollobás-Eldridge-Catlin conjecture for even girth at least $10$
Two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ on $n$ vertices are said to \textit{pack} if there exist injective mappings of their vertex sets into $[n]$ such that the images of their edge sets are disjoint. A longstanding conjecture due to Bollobás and Eldridge and, independently, Catlin, asserts that, if $(Δ(G_1)+1) (Δ(G_2)+1) \le n+1$, then $G_1$ and $G_2$ pack. We consider the validity of this assertion under the additional assumptions that neither $G_1$ nor $G_2$ contain a $4$-, $6$- or $8$-cycle, and that $Δ(G_1)$ or $Δ(G_2)$ is large enough ($\ge 940060$).
Non-crossing Monotone Paths and Binary Trees in Edge-ordered Complete Geometric Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
An edge-ordered graph is a graph with a total ordering of its edges. A path $P=v_1v_2\ldots v_k$ in an edge-ordered graph is called increasing if $(v_iv_{i+1}) > (v_{i+1}v_{i+2})$ for all $i = 1,\ldots,k-2$; it is called decreasing if $(v_iv_{i+1}) < (v_{i+1}v_{i+2})$ for all $i = 1,\ldots,k-2$. We say that $P$ is monotone if it is increasing or decreasing. A rooted tree $T$ in an edge-ordered graph is called monotone if either every path from the root of to a leaf is increasing or every path from the root to a leaf is decreasing. Let $G$ be a graph. In a straight-line drawing $D$ of $G$, its vertices are drawn as different points in the plane and its edges are straight line segments. Let $\overlineα(G)$ be the maximum integer such that every edge-ordered straight-line drawing of $G$ %under any edge labeling contains a monotone non-crossing path of length $\overlineα(G)$. Let $\overlineτ(G)$ be the maximum integer such that every edge-ordered straight-line drawing of $G$ %under any edge labeling contains a monotone non-crossing complete binary tree of size $\overlineτ(G)$. In this paper we show that $\overline α(K_n) = Ω(\log\log n)$, $\overline α(K_n) = O(\log n)$, $\overline τ(K_n) = Ω(\log\log \log n)$ and $\overline τ(K_n) = O(\sqrt{n \log n})$.
