The size Ramsey number of graphs with bounded treewidth
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ is Ramsey for a graph $H$ if every 2-colouring of the edges of $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. We consider the following question: if $H$ has bounded treewidth, is there a `sparse' graph $G$ that is Ramsey for $H$? Two notions of sparsity are considered. Firstly, we show that if the maximum degree and treewidth of $H$ are bounded, then there is a graph $G$ with $O(|V(H)|)$ edges that is Ramsey for $H$. This was previously only known for the smaller class of graphs $H$ with bounded bandwidth. On the other hand, we prove that the treewidth of a graph $G$ that is Ramsey for $H$ cannot be bounded in terms of the treewidth of $H$ alone. In fact, the latter statement is true even if the treewidth is replaced by the degeneracy and $H$ is a tree.

Edge-ordered Ramsey numbers
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 87, pages 103100, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce and study a variant of Ramsey numbers for edge-ordered graphs, that is, graphs with linearly ordered sets of edges. The edge-ordered Ramsey number $\overline{R}_e(\mathfrak{G})$ of an edge-ordered graph $\mathfrak{G}$ is the minimum positive integer $N$ such that there exists an edge-ordered complete graph $\mathfrak{K}_N$ on $N$ vertices such that every 2-coloring of the edges of $\mathfrak{K}_N$ contains a monochromatic copy of $\mathfrak{G}$ as an edge-ordered subgraph of $\mathfrak{K}_N$. We prove that the edge-ordered Ramsey number $\overline{R}_e(\mathfrak{G})$ is finite for every edge-ordered graph $\mathfrak{G}$ and we obtain better estimates for special classes of edge-ordered graphs. In particular, we prove $\overline{R}_e(\mathfrak{G}) \leq 2^{O(n^3\log{n})}$ for every bipartite edge-ordered graph $\mathfrak{G}$ on $n$ vertices. We also introduce a natural class of edge-orderings, called lexicographic edge-orderings, for which we can prove much better upper bounds on the corresponding edge-ordered Ramsey numbers.

Explicit Combinatorial Formulas for Some Irreducible Characters of the $GL_k\times \mathbb{S}_n$-module of multivariate diagonal harmonics
We give an explicit combinatorial formula for some irreducible components of $GL_k\times \mathbb{S}_n$-modules of multivariate diagonal harmonics. To this end we introduce a new path combinatorial object $T_{n,s}$ allowing us to give the formula directly in terms of Schur functions. This paper also contains formulas written in terms of Schur functions in the $q$ and $t$ variables for special cases of $\nabla(e_n)$, $\nabla^r(e_n)$ and $Δ'_{e_k}(e_n)$. We also give an interpretation in term of path to the adjoint dual Pieri rule applied on these $GL_k\times \mathbb{S}_n$-characters.
Globally simple Heffter arrays $H(n;k)$ when $k\equiv 0,3\mod 4$
Square Heffter arrays are $n\times n$ arrays such that each row and each column contains $k$ filled cells, each row and column sum is divisible by $2nk+1$ and either $x$ or $-x$ appears in the array for each integer $1\leq x\leq nk$. Archdeacon noted that a Heffter array, satisfying two additional conditions, yields a face $2$-colourable embedding of the complete graph $K_{2nk+1}$ on an orientable surface, where for each colour, the faces give a $k$-cycle system. Moreover, a cyclic permutation on the vertices acts as an automorphism of the embedding. These necessary conditions pertain to cyclic orderings of the entries in each row and each column of the Heffter array and are: (1) for each row and each column the sequential partial sums determined by the cyclic ordering must be distinct modulo $2nk+1$; (2) the composition of the cyclic orderings of the rows and columns is equivalent to a single cycle permutation on the entries in the array. We construct Heffter arrays that satisfy condition (1) whenever (a) $k\equiv 0\mod 4$; or (b) $n\equiv 1\mod 4$ and $k\equiv 3\mod 4$; or (c) $n\equiv 0\mod 4$, $k\equiv3\mod 4$ and $n\gg k$. As corollaries to the above we obtain pairs of orthogonal $k$-cycle decompositions of $K_{2nk+1}$.
On the size-Ramsey number of grid graphs
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 30 (2021) 670-685 • View Publication • BIB
The size-Ramsey number of a graph $F$ is the smallest number of edges in a graph $G$ with the Ramsey property for $F$, that is, with the property that any 2-colouring of the edges of $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $F$. We prove that the size-Ramsey number of the grid graph on $n\times n$ vertices is bounded from above by $n^{3+o(1)}$.

Linear extension numbers of $n$-element posets
Published • View Publication • BIB
We address the following natural but hitherto unstudied question: what are the possible linear extension numbers of an $n$-element poset? Let $\mathbf{LE}(n)$ denote the set of all positive integers that arise as the number of linear extensions of some $n$-element poset. We show that $\mathbf{LE}(n)$ skews towards the "small" end of the interval $[1,n!]$. More specifically, $\mathbf{LE}(n)$ contains all of the positive integers up to $\exp\left(c\frac{n}{\log n}\right)$ for some absolute constant $c$, and $|\mathbf{LE}(n) \cap ((n-1)!,n!]|<(n-3)!$. The proof of the former statement involves some intermediate number-theoretic results about the Stern-Brocot tree that are of independent interest.

2-systems of arcs on spheres with prescribed endpoints
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $S$ be an $n$-punctured sphere, with $n \geq 3$. We prove that $\binom{n}{3}$ is the maximum size of a family of pairwise non-homotopic simple arcs on $S$ joining a fixed pair of distinct punctures of $S$ and pairwise intersecting at most twice. On the way, we show that a square annular diagram $A$ has a corner on each of its boundary paths if $A$ contains at least one square and the dual curves of $A$ are simple arcs joining the boundary paths of $A$ and pairwise intersecting at most once.
Morphisms generating antipalindromic words
We introduce two classes of morphisms over the alphabet $A=\{0,1\}$ whose fixed points contain infinitely many antipalindromic factors. An antipalindrome is a finite word invariant under the action of the antimorphism $\mathrm{E}:\{0,1\}^*\to\{0,1\}^*$, defined by $\mathrm{E}(w_1\cdots w_n)=(1-w_{n})\cdots(1-w_1)$. We conjecture that these two classes contain all morphisms (up to conjugation) which generate infinite words with infinitely many antipalindromes. This is an analogue to the famous HKS conjecture concerning infinite words containing infinitely many palindromes. We prove our conjecture for two special classes of morphisms, namely (i) uniform morphisms and (ii) morphisms with fixed points containing also infinitely many palindromes.

A local characterization for perfect plane near-triangulations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We derive a local criterion for a plane near-triangulated graph to be perfect. It is shown that a plane near-triangulated graph is perfect if and only if it does not contain either a vertex, an edge or a triangle, the neighbourhood of which has an odd hole as its boundary. The characterization leads to an $O(n^2)$ algorithm for checking perfectness of plane near-triangulations.

Fractional cocoloring of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The cochromatic number $Z(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the fewest number of colors needed to color the vertices of $G$ so that each color class is a clique or an independent set. In a fractional cocoloring of $G$ a non-negative weight is assigned to each clique and independent set so that for each vertex $v$, the sum of the weights of all cliques and independent sets containing $v$ is at least one. The smallest total weight of such a fractional cocoloring of $G$ is the fractional cochromatic number $Z_f(G)$. In this paper we prove results for the fractional cochromatic number $Z_f(G)$ that parallel results for $Z(G)$ and the well studied fractional chromatic number $χ_f{(G)}$. For example $Z_f(G)=χ_f(G)$ when $G$ is triangle-free, except when the only nontrivial component of $G$ is a star. More generally, if $G$ contains no $k$-clique, then $Z_f(G)\le χ_f(G)\le Z_f(G)+R(k,k)$. Moreover, every graph $G$ with $χ_f(G)=m$ contains a subgraph $H$ with $Z_f(H)\ge (\frac 14 - o(1))\frac m{\log_2 m}$. We also prove that the maximum value of $Z_f(G)$ over all graphs $G$ of order $n$ is $Θ(n/\log n)$, and the maximum over all graphs embedded on an orientable surface of genus $g$ is $Θ(\sqrt g / \log g)$.

Graphs of bounded depth-$2$ rank-brittleness
Published in J. Graph Theory, 96:361-378, March 2021 • View Publication • BIB
We characterize classes of graphs closed under taking vertex-minors and having no $P_n$ and no disjoint union of $n$ copies of the $1$-subdivision of $K_{1,n}$ for some $n$. Our characterization is described in terms of a tree of radius $2$ whose leaves are labelled by the vertices of a graph $G$, and the width is measured by the maximum possible cut-rank of a partition of $V(G)$ induced by splitting an internal node of the tree to make two components. The minimum width possible is called the depth-$2$ rank-brittleness of $G$. We prove that for all $n$, every graph with sufficiently large depth-$2$ rank-brittleness contains $P_n$ or disjoint union of $n$ copies of the $1$-subdivision of $K_{1,n}$ as a vertex-minor.

Approximating the Orthogonality Dimension of Graphs and Hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A $t$-dimensional orthogonal representation of a hypergraph is an assignment of nonzero vectors in $\mathbb{R}^t$ to its vertices, such that every hyperedge contains two vertices whose vectors are orthogonal. The orthogonality dimension of a hypergraph $H$, denoted by $\overlineξ(H)$, is the smallest integer $t$ for which there exists a $t$-dimensional orthogonal representation of $H$. In this paper we study computational aspects of the orthogonality dimension of graphs and hypergraphs. We prove that for every $k \geq 4$, it is $\mathsf{NP}$-hard (resp. quasi-$\mathsf{NP}$-hard) to distinguish $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraphs $H$ with $\overlineξ(H) \leq 2$ from those satisfying $\overlineξ(H) \geq Ω(\log^δn)$ for some constant $δ>0$ (resp. $\overlineξ(H) \geq Ω(\log^{1-o(1)} n)$). For graphs, we relate the $\mathsf{NP}$-hardness of approximating the orthogonality dimension to a variant of a long-standing conjecture of Stahl. We also consider the algorithmic problem in which given a graph $G$ with $\overlineξ(G) \leq 3$ the goal is to find an orthogonal representation of $G$ of as low dimension as possible, and provide a polynomial time approximation algorithm based on semidefinite programming.

Fault-Tolerant Path-Embedding of Twisted Hypercube-Like Networks THLNs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The twisted hypercube-like networks($THLNs$) contain several important hypercube variants. This paper is concerned with the fault-tolerant path-embedding of $n$-dimensional($n$-$D$) $THLNs$. Let $G_n$ be an $n$-$D$ $THLN$ and $F$ be a subset of $V(G_n)\cup E(G_n)$ with $|F|\leq n-2$. We show that for arbitrary two different correct vertices $u$ and $v$, there is a faultless path $P_{uv}$ of every length $l$ with $2^{n-1}-1\leq l\leq 2^n-f_v-1-α$, where $α=0$ if vertices $u$ and $v$ form a normal vertex-pair and $α=1$ if vertices $u$ and $v$ form a weak vertex-pair in $G_n-F$($n\geq5$).

Odd cycles in subgraphs of sparse pseudorandom graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We answer two extremal questions about odd cycles that naturally arise in the study of sparse pseudorandom graphs. Let $Γ$ be an $(n,d,λ)$-graph, i.e., $n$-vertex, $d$-regular graphs with all nontrivial eigenvalues in the interval $[-λ,λ]$. Krivelevich, Lee, and Sudakov conjectured that, whenever $λ^{2k-1}\ll d^{2k}/n$, every subgraph $G$ of $Γ$ with $(1/2+o(1))e(Γ)$ edges contains an odd cycle $C_{2k+1}$. Aigner-Horev, Hàn, and the third author proved a weaker statement by allowing an extra polylogarithmic factor in the assumption $λ^{2k-1}\ll d^{2k}/n$, but we completely remove it and hence settle the conjecture. This also generalises Sudakov, Szabo, and Vu's Turán-type theorem for triangles. Secondly, we obtain a Ramsey multiplicity result for odd cycles. Namely, in the same range of parameters, we prove that every 2-edge-colouring of $Γ$ contains at least $(1-o(1))2^{-2k}d^{2k+1}$ monochromatic copies of $C_{2k+1}$. Both results are asymptotically best possible by Alon and Kahale's construction of $C_{2k+1}$-free pseudorandom graphs.

Gallai-Ramsey number of even cycles with chords
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a graph $H$ and an integer $k\ge1$, the $k$-color Ramsey number $R_k(H)$ is the least integer $N$ such that every $k$-coloring of the edges of the complete graph $K_N$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. Let $C_m$ denote the cycle on $m\ge4$ vertices and let $Θ_m$ denote the family of graphs obtained from $C_m$ by adding an additional edge joining two non-consecutive vertices. Unlike Ramsey number of odd cycles, little is known about the general behavior of $R_k(C_{2n})$ except that $R_k(C_{2n})\ge (n-1)k+n+k-1$ for all $k\ge2$ and $n\ge2$. In this paper, we study Ramsey number of even cycles with chords under Gallai colorings, where a Gallai coloring is a coloring of the edges of a complete graph without rainbow triangles. For an integer $k\geq 1$, the Gallai-Ramsey number $GR_k(H)$ of a graph $H$ is the least positive integer $N$ such that every Gallai $k$-coloring of the complete graph $K_N$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. We prove that $GR_k(Θ_{2n})=(n-1)k+n+1$ for all $k\geq 2$ and $n\geq 3$. This implies that $GR_k(C_{2n})=(n-1)k+n+1$ all $k\geq 2$ and $n\geq 3$. Our result yields a unified proof for the Gallai-Ramsey number of all even cycles on at least four vertices.

Indecomposable $0$-Hecke modules for extended Schur functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
The extended Schur functions form a basis of quasisymmetric functions that contains the Schur functions. We provide a representation-theoretic interpretation of this basis by constructing $0$-Hecke modules whose quasisymmetric characteristics are the extended Schur functions. We further prove these modules are indecomposable.
The Kőnig Graph Process
Say that a graph G has property $\mathcal{K}$ if the size of its maximum matching is equal to the order of a minimal vertex cover. We study the following process. Set $N:= \binom{n}{2}$ and let $e_1, e_2, \dots e_{N}$ be a uniformly random ordering of the edges of $K_n$, with $n$ an even integer. Let $G_0$ be the empty graph on $n$ vertices. For $m \geq 0$, $G_{m+1}$ is obtained from $G_m$ by adding the edge $e_{m+1}$ exactly if $G_m \cup \{ e_{m+1}\}$ has property $\mathcal{K}$. We analyse the behaviour of this process, focusing mainly on two questions: What can be said about the structure of $G_N$ and for which $m$ will $G_m$ contain a perfect matching?
A generalization of Heffter arrays
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we define a new class of partially filled arrays, called relative Heffter arrays, that are a generalization of the Heffter arrays introduced by Archdeacon in 2015. Let $v=2nk+t$ be a positive integer, where $t$ divides $2nk$, and let $J$ be the subgroup of $\mathbb{Z}_v$ of order $t$. A $H_t(m,n; s,k)$ Heffter array over $\mathbb{Z}_v$ relative to $J$ is an $m\times n$ partially filled array with elements in $\mathbb{Z}_v$ such that: (a) each row contains $s$ filled cells and each column contains $k$ filled cells; (b) for every $x\in \mathbb{Z}_v\setminus J$, either $x$ or $-x$ appears in the array; (c) the elements in every row and column sum to $0$. Here we study the existence of square integer (i.e. with entries chosen in $\pm\left\{1,\dots,\left\lfloor \frac{2nk+t}{2}\right\rfloor \right\}$ and where the sums are zero in $\mathbb{Z}$) relative Heffter arrays for $t=k$, denoted by $H_k(n;k)$. In particular, we prove that for $3\leq k\leq n$, with $k\neq 5$, there exists an integer $H_k(n;k)$ if and only if one of the following holds: (a) $k$ is odd and $n\equiv 0,3\pmod 4$; (b) $k\equiv 2\pmod 4$ and $n$ is even; (c) $k\equiv 0\pmod 4$. Also, we show how these arrays give rise to cyclic cycle decompositions of the complete multipartite graph.

Sandwiching random regular graphs between binomial random graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Kim and Vu made the following conjecture (\textit{Advances in Mathematics}, 2004): if $d\gg \log n$, then the random $d$-regular graph $\mathcal G(n,d)$ can asymptotically almost surely be "sandwiched" between $\mathcal G(n,p_1)$ and $\mathcal G(n,p_2)$ where $p_1$ and $p_2$ are both $(1+o(1))d/n$. They proved this conjecture for $\log n\ll d\le n^{1/3-o(1)}$, with a defect in the sandwiching: $\mathcal G(n,d)$ contains $\mathcal G(n,p_1)$ perfectly, but is not completely contained in $\mathcal G(n,p_2)$. Recently, the embedding $\mathcal G(n,p_1) \subseteq \mathcal G(n,d)$ was improved by Dudek, Frieze, Ruciński and Šileikis to $d=o(n)$. In this paper, we prove Kim--Vu's sandwich conjecture, with perfect containment on both sides, for all $d\gg n/\sqrt{\log n}$. For $d=O(n/\sqrt{\log n})$, we prove a weaker version of the sandwich conjecture with $p_2$ approximately equal to $(d/n)\log n$, without any defect. In addition to sandwiching regular graphs, our results cover graphs whose degrees are asymptotically equal. The proofs rely on estimates for the probability that a random factor of a pseudorandom graph contains a given edge, which is of independent interest. As applications, we obtain new results on the properties of random graphs with given near-regular degree sequences, including Hamiltonicity and universality in subgraph containment. We also determine several graph parameters in these random graphs, such as the chromatic number, small subgraph counts, the diameter, and the independence number. We are also able to characterise many phase transitions in edge percolation on these random graphs, such as the threshold for the appearance of a giant component.

A conjecture of Verstraëte on vertex-disjoint cycles
Answering a question of Häggkvist and Scott, Verstraëte proved that every sufficiently large graph with average degree at least $k^2+19k+10$ contains $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles of consecutive even lengths. He further conjectured that the same holds for every graph $G$ with average degree at least $k^2+3k+2$. In this paper we prove this conjecture for $k\geq 19$ when $G$ is sufficiently large. We also show that for any $ε>0$ and large $k\geq k_ε$, average degree at least $k^2+3k-2+ε$ suffices, which is asymptotically tight for infinitely many graphs.
