Additive bases of $C_3\oplus C_{3q}$
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a finite abelian group and $p$ be the smallest prime dividing $|G|$. Let $S$ be a sequence over $G$. We say that $S$ is regular if for every proper subgroup $H \subsetneq G$, $S$ contains at most $|H|-1$ terms from $H$. Let $\mathsf c_0(G)$ be the smallest integer $t$ such that every regular sequence $S$ over $G$ of length $|S|\geq t$ forms an additive basis of $G$, i.e., $\sum(S)=G$. The invariant $\mathsf c_0(G)$ was first studied by Olson and Peng in 1980's, and since then it has been determined for all finite abelian groups except for the groups with rank 2 and a few groups of rank 3 or 4 with order less than $10^8$. In this paper, we focus on the remaining case concerning groups of rank 2. It was conjectured by the first author and Han (Int. J. Number Theory 13 (2017) 2453-2459) that $\mathsf c_0(G)=pn+2p-3$ where $G=C_p\oplus C_{pn}$ with $n\geq 3$. We confirm the conjecture for the case when $p=3$ and $n=q \,(\geq 5)$ is a prime number.

On the invariant E(G) for groups of odd order
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a multiplicatively written finite group. We denote by $\mathsf E(G)$ the smallest integer $t$ such that every sequence of $t$ elements in $G$ contains a product-one subsequence of length $|G|$. In 1961, Erdős, Ginzburg and Ziv proved that $\mathsf E(G)\leq 2|G|-1$ for every finite solvable group $G$ and this result is well known as the Erdős-Ginzburg-Ziv Theorem. In 2010, Gao and Li improved this result to $\mathsf E(G)\leq\frac{7|G|}{4}-1$ and they conjectured that $\mathsf E(G)\leq \frac{3|G|}{2}$ holds for any finite non-cyclic group. In this paper, we confirm the conjecture for all finite non-cyclic groups of odd order.

Generalizations of the Yao-Yao partition theorem and the central transversal theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
We generalize the Yao-Yao partition theorem by showing that for any smooth measure in $R^d$ there exist equipartitions using $(t+1)2^{d-1}$ convex regions such that every hyperplane misses the interior of at least $t$ regions. In addition, we present tight bounds on the smallest number of hyperplanes whose union contains the boundary of an equipartition of a measure into $n$ regions. We also present a simple proof of a Borsuk-Ulam type theorem for Stiefel manifolds that allows us to generalize the central transversal theorem and prove results bridging the Yao--Yao partition theorem and the central transversal theorem.

Maximal cocliques of a strongly regular graph with parameters (2048,276,44,36)
This article considers a strongly regular graph with parameters (2048,276,44,36) that is related to the extended binary Golay code. That graph is known since about 1975 but there seems to be not much information on the contained maximal cocliques. The source package of this article contains a data file that encodes a sequence of maximal independence sets of that graph, covering all sizes from 20 to 67 and the size 72, and a Pascal program to check this assertion and to optionally generate a text file (to be read by the computer algebra system GAP) that contains the adjacency lists of that graph and the list of the independence sets.

A rainbow connectivity threshold for random graph families
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a family $\mathcal G$ of graphs on a common vertex set $X$, we say that $\mathcal G$ is rainbow connected if for every vertex pair $u,v \in X$, there exists a path from $u$ to $v$ that uses at most one edge from each graph in $\mathcal G$. We consider the case that $\mathcal G$ contains $s$ graphs, each sampled randomly from $G(n,p)$, with $n = |X|$ and $p = \frac{c \log n}{sn}$, where $c > 1$ is a constant. We show that when $s$ is sufficiently large, $\mathcal G$ is a.a.s. rainbow connected, and when $s$ is sufficiently small, $\mathcal G$ is a.a.s. not rainbow connected. We also calculate a threshold of $s$ for the rainbow connectivity of $\mathcal G$, and we show that this threshold is concentrated on at most three values, which are larger than the diameter of the union of $\mathcal G$ by about $\frac{\log n}{(\log \log n)^2}$. The same results also hold in a more traditional random rainbow setting, where we take a random graph $G\in G(n,p)$ with $p=\frac{c \log n}{n}$ ($c>1$) and color each edge of $G$ with a color chosen uniformly at random from the set $[s]$ of $s$ colors.

Representation of Dyck words in tensors that zipper merge contiguous integer compositions
Let $0<k\in\mathbb{Z}$. We zipper-merge integer compositions with sums $k$ and $k+1$, equal number of parts and initial entries equal at least to 1 and 2, respectively. This yields bitstrings with two initial zeros, $k-1$ remaining zeros and $k$ ones. Tensors whose entries are such bitstrings contain unique representations of all Dyck words of length $2k$. If rows and columns of such tensors are disposed in descending lexicographic order, then their entries not representing Dyck words form disjoint unions of descending staircases corresponding to strict lower triangular submatrices.
Algorithmic aspects of quasi-kernels
Published • View Publication • BIB
In a digraph, a quasi-kernel is a subset of vertices that is independent and such that every vertex can reach some vertex in that set via a directed path of length at most two. Whereas Chvátal and Lovász proved in 1974 that every digraph has a quasi-kernel, very little is known so far about the complexity of finding small quasi-kernels. In 1976 Erdős and Székely conjectured that every sink-free digraph $D = (V, A)$ has a quasi-kernel of size at most $|V|/2$. Obviously, if $D$ has two disjoint quasi-kernels then it has a quasi-kernel of size at most $|V|/2$, and in 2001 Gutin, Koh, Tay and Yeo conjectured that every sink-free digraph has two disjoint quasi-kernels. Yet, they constructed in 2004 a counterexample, thereby disproving this stronger conjecture. We shall show that, not only sink-free digraphs occasionally fail to contain two disjoint quasi-kernels, but it is computationally hard to distinguish those that do from those that do not. We also prove that the problem of computing a small quasi-kernel is polynomial time solvable for orientations of trees but is computationally hard in most other cases (and in particular for restricted acyclic digraphs).

On a k-matching algorithm and finding k-factors in random graphs with minimum degree k+1 in linear time
We prove that for $k+1\geq 3$ and $c>(k+1)/2$ w.h.p. the random graph on $n$ vertices, $cn$ edges and minimum degree $k+1$ contains a (near) perfect $k$-matching. As an immediate consequence we get that w.h.p. the $(k+1)$-core of $G_{n,p}$, if non empty, spans a (near) spanning $k$-regular subgraph. This improves upon a result of Chan and Molloy and completely resolves a conjecture of Bollobás, Kim and Verstraëte. In addition, we show that w.h.p. such a subgraph can be found in linear time. A substantial element of the proof is the analysis of a randomized algorithm for finding $k$-matchings in random graphs with minimum degree $k+1$.

Complete subgraphs in a multipartite graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 1975 Bollobás, Erd\H os, and Szemerédi asked the following question: given positive integers $n, t, r$ with $2\le t\le r-1$, what is the largest minimum degree $δ(G)$ among all $r$-partite graphs $G$ with parts of size $n$ and which do not contain a copy of $K_{t+1}$? The $r=t+1$ case has attracted a lot of attention and was fully resolved by Haxell and Szabó, and Szabó and Tardos in 2006. In this paper we investigate the $r>t+1$ case of the problem, which has remained dormant for over forty years. We resolve the problem exactly in the case when $r \equiv -1 \pmod{t}$, and up to an additive constant for many other cases, including when $r \geq (3t-1)(t-1)$. Our approach utilizes a connection to the related problem of determining the maximum of the minimum degrees among the family of balanced $r$-partite $rn$-vertex graphs of chromatic number at most $t$.

Joint ergodicity of fractional powers of primes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We establish mean convergence for multiple ergodic averages with iterates given by distinct fractional powers of primes and related multiple recurrence results. A consequence of our main result is that every set of integers with positive upper density contains patterns of the form $\{m,m+[p_n^a], m+[p_n^b]\}$, where $a,b$ are positive non-integers and $p_n$ denotes the $n$-th prime, a property that fails if $a$ or $b$ is a natural number. Our approach is based on a recent criterion for joint ergodicity of collections of sequences and the bulk of the proof is devoted to obtaining good seminorm estimates for the related multiple ergodic averages. The input needed from number theory are upper bounds for the number of prime $k$-tuples that follow from elementary sieve theory estimates and equidistribution results of fractional powers of primes in the circle.
Crux and long cycles in graphs
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Vol. 36, Iss. 4 (2022) • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a notion of the \emph{crux} of a graph $G$, measuring the order of a smallest dense subgraph in $G$. This simple-looking notion leads to some generalisations of known results about cycles, offering an interesting paradigm of `replacing average degree by crux'. In particular, we prove that \emph{every} graph contains a cycle of length linear in its crux. Long proved that every subgraph of a hypercube $Q^m$ (resp. discrete torus $C_3^m$) with average degree $d$ contains a path of length $2^{d/2}$ (resp. $2^{d/4}$), and conjectured that there should be a path of length $2^{d}-1$ (resp. $3^{d/2}-1$). As a corollary of our result, together with isoperimetric inequalities, we close these exponential gaps giving asymptotically optimal bounds on long paths in hypercubes, discrete tori, and more generally Hamming graphs. We also consider random subgraphs of $C_4$-free graphs and hypercubes, proving near optimal bounds on lengths of long cycles.

55- and 56-configurations are reducible
Let $G$ be a 4-chromatic maximal planar graph (MPG) with the minimum degree of at least 4 and let $C$ be an even-length cycle of $G$.If $|f(C)|=2$ for every $f$ in some Kempe equivalence class of $G$, then we call $C$ an unchanged bichromatic cycle (UBC) of $G$, and correspondingly $G$ an unchanged bichromatic cycle maximal planar graph (UBCMPG) with respect to $C$, where $f(C)=\{f(v)| v\in V(C)\}$. For an UBCMPG $G$ with respect to an UBC $C$, the subgraph of $G$ induced by the set of edges belonging to $C$ and its interior (or exterior), denoted by $G^C$, is called a base-module of $G$; in particular, when the length of $C$ is equal to four, we use $C_4$ instead of $C$ and call $G^{C_4}$ a 4-base-module. In this paper, we first study the properties of UBCMPGs and show that every 4-base-module $G^{C_4}$ contains a 4-coloring under which $C_4$ is bichromatic and there are at least two bichromatic paths with different colors between one pair of diagonal vertices of $C_4$ (these paths are called module-paths). We further prove that every 4-base-module $G^{C_4}$ contains a 4-coloring (called decycle coloring) for which the ends of a module-path are colored by distinct colors. Finally, based on the technique of the contracting and extending operations of MPGs, we prove that 55-configurations and 56-configurations are reducible by converting the reducibility problem of these two classes of configurations into the decycle coloring problem of 4-base-modules.

$L(n)$ graphs are vertex-pancyclic and Hamilton-connected
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ of order $n>2$ is pancyclic if $G$ contains a cycle of length $l$ for each integer $l$ with $3 \leq l \leq n $ and it is called vertex-pancyclic if every vertex is contained in a cycle of length $l$ for every $3 \leq l \leq n $. A graph $G$ of order $n > 2$ is Hamilton-connected if for any pair of distinct vertices $u$ and $v$, there is a Hamilton $u$-$v$ path, namely, there is a $u$-$v$ path of length $n-1$. The graph $ B(n)$ is a graph with the vertex set $V=\{v \ | \ v \subset [n] , | v | \in \{ 1,2 \} \} $ and the edge set $ E= \{ \{ v , w \} \ | \ v , w \in V , v \subset w $ or $ w \subset v \}$, where $[n]=\{1,2,...,n\}$. We denote by $L(n)$ the line graph of $B(n)$, that is, $L(n)=L(B(n))$. In this paper, we show that the graph $L(n)$ is vertex-pancyclic and Hamilton-connected whenever $n\geq 6$.

Multicolor Size-Ramsey Number of Cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a positive integer $ r $, the $ r $-color size-Ramsey number of a graph $ H $, denoted by $ \hat{R}(H, r) $, is the smallest integer $ m $ for which there exists a graph $ G $ with $ m $ edges such that, in any edge coloring of $ G $ with $ r $ colors, $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $ H $. Haxell, Kohayakawa and Łuczak showed that the size-Ramsey number of a cycle $ C_n $ is linear in $ n $ i.e. $ \hat{R}(C_n, r) \leq c_rn $, for some constant $ c_r $. Their proof, however, is based on the Szemerédi's regularity lemma and so no specific constant $ c_r $ is known. Javadi, Khoeini, Omidi and Pokrovskiy gave an alternative proof for this result which avoids using of the regularity lemma. Indeed, they proved that if $ n $ is even, then $ c_r $ is exponential in $ r $ and if $ n $ is odd, then $ c_r $ is doubly exponential in $ r $. \noindent In this paper, we improve the bound $c_r$ and prove that $c_r$ is polynomial in $r$ when $n$ is even and is exponential in $r$ when $n$ is odd. We also prove that in the latter case, it cannot be improved to a polynomial bound in $r$. More precisely, we prove that there are some positive constants $c_1,c_2$ such that for every even integer $n$, we have $c_1r^2n\leq \hat{R}(C_n,r)\leq c_2r^{120}(\log^2 r)n$ and for every odd integer $n$, we have $c_1 2^{r}n \leq \hat{R}(C_n, r)\leq c_22^{16 r^2+2\log r}n $.

Matching of given sizes in hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For all integers $k,d$ such that $k \geq 3$ and $k/2\leq d \leq k-1$, let $n$ be a sufficiently large integer {\rm(}which may not be divisible by $k${\rm)} and let $s\le \lfloor n/k\rfloor-1$. We show that if $H$ is a $k$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices with $δ_{d}(H)>\binom{n-d}{k-d}-\binom{n-d-s+1}{k-d}$, then $H$ contains a matching of size $s$. This improves a recent result of Lu, Yu, and Yuan and also answers a question of Kühn, Osthus, and Townsend. In many cases, our result can be strengthened to $s\leq \lfloor n/k\rfloor$, which then covers the entire possible range of $s$. On the other hand, there are examples showing that the result does not hold for certain $n, k, d$ and $s= \lfloor n/k\rfloor$.

Absolutely avoidable order-size pairs for induced subgraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We call a pair $(m,f)$ of integers, $m\geq 1$, $0\leq f \leq \binom{m}{2}$, \emph{absolutely avoidable} if there is $n_0$ such that for any pair of integers $(n,e)$ with $n>n_0$ and $0\leq e\leq \binom{n}{2}$ there is a graph on $n$ vertices and $e$ edges that contains no induced subgraph on $m$ vertices and $f$ edges. Some pairs are clearly not absolutely avoidable, for example $(m,0)$ is not absolutely avoidable since any sufficiently sparse graph on at least $m$ vertices contains independent sets on $m$ vertices. Here we show that there are infinitely many absolutely avoidable pairs. We give a specific infinite set $M$ such that for any $m\in M$, the pair $(m, \binom{m}{2}/2)$ is absolutely avoidable. In addition, among other results, we show that for any monotone integer function $q(m)$, $|q(m)|=O(m)$, there are infinitely many values of $m$ such that the pair $(m, \binom{m}{2}/2 +q(m))$ is absolutely avoidable.
Graphs with Many Hamiltonian Paths
Published in Involve 18 (2025) 613-627 • View Publication • BIB
A graph is \emph{hamiltonian-connected} if every pair of vertices can be connected by a hamiltonian path, and it is \emph{hamiltonian} if it contains a hamiltonian cycle. We construct families of non-hamiltonian graphs for which the ratio of pairs of vertices connected by hamiltonian paths to all pairs of vertices approaches 1. We then consider minimal graphs that are hamiltonian-connected. It is known that any order-$n$ graph that is hamiltonian-connected must have $\geq 3n/2$ edges. We construct an infinite family of graphs realizing this minimum.

On finite groups with polynomial diameter
Given a finite group $G$ and a generating set $S \subseteq G$, the diameter $diam(G,S)$ is the least integer $n$ such that every element of $G$ is the product of at most $n$ elements of $S$. In this paper, for bounded $|S|$, we characterize groups with polynomial diameter as the groups with a large abelian section close to the top, precisely of size an exponential portion of the size of the full group. This complements a key result of Breuillard and Tointon. As a consequence, groups with polynomial diameter have many conjugacy classes, and contain a large nilpotent subgroup of class at most $2$.

Spectral Conditions for the Bipancyclic Bipartite Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G = (X, Y; E)$ be a bipartite graph with two vertex partition subsets $X$ and $Y$. $G$ is said to be balanced if $|X| = |Y|$. $G$ is said to be bipancyclic if it contains cycles of every even length from $4$ to $|V(G)|$. In this note, we present spectral conditions for the bipancyclic bipartite graphs.

Rainbow Turán number of clique subdivisions
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 110, May 2023, 103675 • View Publication • BIB
We show that for any integer $t\geq 2$, every properly edge-coloured graph on $n$ vertices with more than $n^{1+o(1)}$ edges contains a rainbow subdivision of $K_t$. Note that this bound on the number of edges is sharp up to the $o(1)$ error term. This is a rainbow analogue of some classical results on clique subdivisions and extends some results on rainbow Turán numbers. Our method relies on the framework introduced by Sudakov and Tomon[2020] which we adapt to find robust expanders in the coloured setting.
