The Boundary of a Graph and its Isoperimetric Inequality
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define, for any graph $G=(V,E)$, a boundary $\partial G \subseteq V$. The definition coincides with what one would expected for the discretization of (sufficiently nice) Euclidean domains and contains all vertices from the Chartrand-Erwin-Johns-Zhang boundary. Moreover, it satisfies an isoperimetric principle stating that graphs with many vertices have a large boundary unless they contain long paths: we show that for graphs with maximal degree $Δ$ $$ | \partial G| \geq \frac{1}{2Δ} \frac{|V|}{\mbox{diam}(G)}.$$ For graphs discretizing Euclidean domains, one has $\mbox{diam}(G) \sim |V|^{1/d}$ and recovers the scaling of the classical Euclidean isoperimetric principle.

A transfer theorem for multivariate Delta-analytic functions with a power-law singularity
This paper presents a multivariate generalization of Flajolet and Odlyzko's transfer theorem. Similarly to the univariate version, the theorem assumes $Δ$-analyticity (defined coordinate-wise) of a function $A(z_1,\ldots,z_d)$ at a unique dominant singularity $(ρ_1,\ldots,ρ_d) \in (\mathbb C_*)^d$, and allows one to translate, on a term-by-term basis, an asymptotic expansion of $A(z_1,\ldots,z_d)$ around $(ρ_1,\ldots,ρ_d)$ into a corresponding asymptotic expansion of its Taylor coefficients $a_{n_1,\ldots,n_d}$. We treat the case where the asymptotic expansion of $A(z_1,\ldots,z_d)$ contains only power-law type terms, and where the indices $n_1,\ldots,n_d$ tend to infinity in some polynomially stretched diagonal limit. The resulting asymptotic expansion of $a_{n_1,\ldots,n_d}$ is a sum of terms of the form \begin{equation*} I(λ_1,\ldots,λ_d) \cdot n_0^{-Θ} \cdot ρ_1^{-n_1}\cdots ρ_d^{-n_d}, \end{equation*} where $(λ_1,\ldots,λ_d) \in (0,\infty)^d$ is the direction vector of the stretched diagonal limit for $(n_1,\ldots,n_d)$, the parameter $n_0$ tends to $\infty$ at similar speed as $n_1,\ldots,n_d$, while $Θ\in \mathbb R$ and $I:(0,\infty)^d \to \mathbb C$ are determined by the asymptotic expansion of $A$.

Triangles in intersecting families
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove the following the generalized Turán type result. A collection $\mathcal{T}$ of $r$ sets is an $r$-triangle if for every $T_1,T_2,\dots,T_{r-1}\in \mathcal{T}$ we have $\cap_{i=1}^{r-1}T_i\neq\emptyset$, but $\cap_{T\in \mathcal{T}}T$ is empty. A family $\mathcal{F}$ of sets is $r$-wise intersecting if for any $F_1,F_2,\dots,F_r\in \mathcal{F}$ we have $\cap_{i=1}^rF_i\neq \emptyset$ or equivalently if $\mathcal{F}$ does not contain any $m$-triangle for $m=2,3,\dots,r$. We prove that if $n\ge n_0(r,k)$, then the $r$-wise intersecting family $\mathcal{F}\subseteq \binom{[n]}{k}$ containing the most number of $(r+1)$-triangles is isomorphic to $\{F\in \binom{[n]}{k}:|F\cap [r+1]|\ge r\}$.

Recurrence formula, positivity and polytope basis in cluster algebras via Newton polytopes
In this paper, we study the Newton polytopes of $F$-polynomials in a TSSS cluster algebra $\mathcal A$ and generalize them to a larger set consisting of polytopes $N_{h}$ associated to vectors $h\in\Z^{n}$ as well as $\widehat{\mathcal{P}}$ consisting of polytope functions $ρ_{h}$ corresponding to $N_{h}$. The main contribution contains that (i) obtaining a {\em recurrence construction} of the Laurent expression of a cluster variable in a cluster from its $g$-vector; (ii) proving the subset $\mathcal{P}$ of $\widehat{\mathcal{P}}$ consisting of Laurent polynomials in $\widehat{\mathcal{P}}$ is a strongly positive $\Z Trop(Y)$-basis for $\mathcal{U}(\A)$ consisting of certain universally indecomposable Laurent polynomials when $\A$ is a cluster algebra with principal coefficients. For a cluster algebra $\mathcal A$ over arbitrary semifield $\mathbb P$ in general, $\mathcal{P}$ is a strongly positive $\Z¶$-basis for the intermediate cluster subalgebra $\mathcal{I_P(A)}$ of $\mathcal{U(A)}$. We call $\mathcal P$ the {\em polytope basis}; (iii) constructing some explicit maps among corresponding $F$-polynomials, $g$-vectors, $d$-vectors and cluster variables to characterize their relationship. Moreover, we give three applications of (i), (ii) and (iii) respectively.
What makes a reaction network "chemical"?
Reaction networks (RNs) comprise a set $X$ of species and a set $\mathscr{R}$ of reactions $Y\to Y'$, each converting a multiset of educts $Y\subseteq X$ into a multiset $Y'\subseteq X$ of products. RNs are equivalent to directed hypergraphs. However, not all RNs necessarily admit a chemical interpretation. Instead, they might contradict fundamental principles of physics such as the conservation of energy and mass or the reversibility of chemical reactions. The consequences of these necessary conditions for the stoichiometric matrix $\mathbf{S} \in \mathbb{R}^{X\times\mathscr{R}}$ have been discussed extensively in the literature. Here, we provide sufficient conditions for $\mathbf{S}$ that guarantee the interpretation of RNs in terms of balanced sum formulas and structural formulas, respectively. Chemically plausible RNs allow neither a perpetuum mobile, i.e., a "futile cycle" of reactions with non-vanishing energy production, nor the creation or annihilation of mass. Such RNs are said to be thermodynamically sound and conservative. For finite RNs, both conditions can be expressed equivalently as properties of $\mathbf{S}$. The first condition is vacuous for reversible networks, but it excludes irreversible futile cycles and - in a stricter sense - futile cycles that even contain an irreversible reaction. The second condition is equivalent to the existence of a strictly positive reaction invariant. Furthermore, it is sufficient for the existence of a realization in terms of sum formulas, obeying conservation of "atoms". In particular, these realizations can be chosen such that any two species have distinct sum formulas, unless $\mathbf{S}$ implies that they are "obligatory isomers". In terms of structural formulas, every compound is a labeled multigraph, in essence a Lewis formula, and reactions comprise only a rearrangement of bonds such that the total bond order is preserved.

Spanning trees of $K_{1,4}$-free graphs with a bounded number of leaves and branch vertices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $T$ be a tree. A vertex of degree one is a \emph{leaf} of $T$ and a vertex of degree at least three is a \emph{branch vertex} of $T$. A graph is said to be \emph{$K_{1,4}$-free} if it does not contain $K_{1,4}$ as an induced subgraph. In this paper, we study the spanning trees with a bounded number of leaves and branch vertices of $K_ {1,4}$-free graphs. Applying the main results, we also give some improvements of previous results on the spanning tree with few branch vertices for the case of $K_{1,4}$-free graphs.
The bipartite Turan number and spectral extremum for linear forests
Published • View Publication • BIB
The bipartite Turán number of a graph $H$, denoted by $ex(m,n; H)$, is the maximum number of edges in any bipartite graph $G=(X,Y; E)$ with $|X|=m$ and $|Y|=n$ which does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. In this paper, we determined $ex(m,n; F_{\ell})$ for arbitrary $\ell$ and appropriately large $n$ with comparing to $m$ and $\ell$, where $F_\ell$ is a linear forest which consists of $\ell$ vertex disjoint paths. Moreover, the extremal graphs have been characterized. Furthermore, these results are used to obtain the maximum spectral radius of bipartite graphs which does not contain $F_{\ell}$ as a subgraph and characterize all extremal graphs which attain the maximum spectral radius.
Classifying Subset Feedback Vertex Set for $H$-Free Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the Feedback Vertex Set problem, we aim to find a small set $S$ of vertices in a graph intersecting every cycle. The Subset Feedback Vertex Set problem requires $S$ to intersect only those cycles that include a vertex of some specified set $T$. We also consider the Weighted Subset Feedback Vertex Set problem, where each vertex $u$ has weight $w(u)>0$ and we ask that $S$ has small weight. By combining known NP-hardness results with new polynomial-time results we prove full complexity dichotomies for Subset Feedback Vertex Set and Weighted Subset Feedback Vertex Set for $H$-free graphs, that is, graphs that do not contain a graph $H$ as an induced subgraph.

Counting substructures and eigenvalues II: quadrilaterals
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 32(4) (2025), #P4.1 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be a graph and $λ(G)$ be the spectral radius of $G$. A previous result due to Nikiforov [Linear Algebra Appl., 2009] in spectral graph theory asserted that every graph $G$ on $m\geq 10$ edges contains a 4-cycle if $λ(G)>\sqrt{m}$. Define $f(m)$ to be the minimum number of copies of 4-cycles in such a graph. A consequence of a recent theorem due to Zhai et al. [European J. Combin., 2021] shows that $f(m)=Ω(m)$. In this article, by somewhat different techniques, we prove that $f(m)=Θ(m^2)$. We left the solution to $\lim\limits_{m\rightarrow \infty} \frac{f(m)}{m^2}$ as a problem, and also mention other ones for further study.

An irrational Lagrangian density of a single hypergraph
Published • View Publication • BIB
The {\em Turán number} of an $r$-uniform graph $F$, denoted by $ex(n,F)$, is the maximum number of edges in an $F$-free $r$-uniform graph on $n$ vertices. The {\em Turán density} of $F$ is defined as $π(F)=\underset{n\rightarrow\infty}{\lim}{ex(n,F) \over {n \choose r }}.$ For graphs, Erdős-Stone-Simonovits (\cite{ESi}, \cite{ES}) showed that $Π_{\infty}^{(2)}=Π_{fin}^{(2)}=Π_{1}^{(2)}=\{0, {1 \over 2}, {2 \over 3}, \ldots,{l-1 \over l}, ...\}.$ We know quite few about the Turán density of an $r$-uniform graph for $r\ge 3$. Baber and Talbot \cite{BT}, and Pikhurko \cite{Pikhurko2} showed that there is an irrational number in $Π_{3}^{(3)}$ and $Π_{fin}^{(3)}$ respectively, disproving a conjecture of Chung and Graham \cite{FG}. Baber and Talbot \cite{BT} asked whether $Π_{1}^{(r)}$ contains an irrational number. In this paper, we show that the Lagrangian density of $F=\{123, 124, 134, 234, 567\}$ (the disjoint union of $K_4^3$ and an edge) is ${\sqrt 3\over 3}$, consequently, the Turán density of the extension of $F$ is an irrational number, answering the question of Baber and Talbot.

Tree Embeddings and Tree-Star Ramsey Numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
We say that a graph $F$ can be embedded into a graph $G$ if $G$ contains an isomorphic copy of $F$ as a subgraph. Guo and Volkmann \cite{GV} conjectured that if $G$ is a connected graph with at least $n$ vertices and minimum degree at least $n-3$, then any tree with $n$ vertices and maximum degree at most $n-4$ can be embedded into $G$. In this paper, we give a result slightly stronger than this conjecture and obtain a sufficient and necessary condition that a tree with $n$ vertices and maximum degree at most $n-3$ can be embedded into a connected graph G with at least $n$ vertices and minimum degree at least $n-3$. Our result implies that the conjecture of Guo and Volkmann is true with one exception. We also give an application to the Ramsey number of a tree versus a star.

The bipartite Ramsey number $br(C_{2n}, C_{2m})$
Given bipartite graphs $H_1$, \dots , $H_k$, the bipartite Ramsey number $br(H_1,\dots, H_k)$ is the minimum integer $N$ such that any $k$-edge-coloring of complete bipartite graph $K_{N, N}$ contains a monochromatic $H_i$ in color $i$ for $1\le i\le k$. There are considerable results on asymptotic values of bipartite Ramsey numbers of cycles. For exact value, Zhang-Sun \cite{Zhangs} determined $br(C_4, C_{2n})$, Zhang-Sun-Wu \cite{Zhangsw} determined $br(C_6, C_{2n})$, and Gholami-Rowshan \cite{GR} determined $br(C_8, C_{2n})$. In this paper, we solve all remaining cases and give the exact values of $br(C_{2n}, C_{2m})$ for all $n\ge m\ge 5$, this answers a question concerned by Bucić-Letzter-Sudakov \cite{BLS}, Gholami-Rowshan \cite{GR}, Zhang-Sun \cite{Zhangs}, and Zhang-Sun-Wu \cite{Zhangsw}.

How to Construct the Lattice of Submodules of a Multiplicity free Module from Partial Information
In general it is a difficult problem to construct the lattice of submodules $L(M)$ of a given module $M$. In \cite{St} R. P. Stanley outlined a method for constucting a distributive lattice from a knowledge of its join irreducibles. However it is not an easy task to identify all join irreducible submodules of a given module. In the case of a multiplicity free module $M$ we present a modifiiction of Stanley's method based on the composition factors of $M$. As input we require a set of submodules $A_1,\ldots , A_n$ whose submodule lattices are known and which contain all composition factors of $M$. From this we can reconstruct $L(M)$. We illustrate the process for a family of Verma modules $M(\gl_n)$, with $n $ a positive integer, for the Lie superalgebra $\osp(3,2)$. We show that for $n\ge 2$, $L(M(\gl_n))$ is isomorphic to the (extended) free distributive lattice of rank 3.

Counting rainbow triangles in edge-colored graphs
Published in J. Graph Theory 107 (2024), no. 4, 742--758 • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be an edge-colored graph on $n$ vertices. The minimum color degree of $G$, denoted by $δ^c(G)$, is defined as the minimum number of colors assigned to the edges incident to a vertex in $G$. In 2013, H. Li proved that an edge-colored graph $G$ on $n$ vertices contains a rainbow triangle if $δ^c(G)\geq \frac{n+1}{2}$. In this paper, we obtain several estimates on the number of rainbow triangles through one given vertex in $G$. As consequences, we prove counting results for rainbow triangles in edge-colored graphs. One main theorem states that the number of rainbow triangles in $G$ is at least $\frac{1}{6}δ^c(G)(2δ^c(G)-n)n$, which is best possible by considering the rainbow $k$-partite Turán graph, where its order is divisible by $k$. This means that there are $Ω(n^2)$ rainbow triangles in $G$ if $δ^c(G)\geq \frac{n+1}{2}$, and $Ω(n^3)$ rainbow triangles in $G$ if $δ^c(G)\geq cn$ when $c>\frac{1}{2}$. Both results are tight in sense of the order of the magnitude. We also prove a counting version of a previous theorem on rainbow triangles under a color neighborhood union condition due to Broersma et al., and an asymptotically tight color degree condition forcing a colored friendship subgraph $F_k$ (i.e., $k$ rainbow triangles sharing a common vertex).

Elusive properties of infinite graphs
A graph property is said to be elusive ( evasive) if every algorithm testing this property by asking questions of the form "is there an edge between vertices x and y" requires, in the worst case, to ask about all pairs of vertices. The unsettled Aanderaa-Karp-Rosenberg conjecture is that every monotone graph property is elusive for finite vertex sets. We show that the situation is completely different for infinite vertex sets: the monotone graph properties "every vertex has degree at least n" and "every connected components has size at least n" where n is a natural number, are not elusive for infinite vertex sets, but the monotone graph property "the graph contains a cycle" is elusive for arbitrary vertex sets. On the other hand, we also prove that every algorithm testing some natural monotone graph properties, e.g "every vertex has degree at least n" or "connected" on the vertex set omega should check "lots of edges", more precisely, all the edges of an infinite complete subgraph.

Towards a conjecture of Birmelé-Bondy-Reed on the Erdős-Pósa property of long cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
A conjecture of Birmelé, Bondy and Reed states that for any integer $\ell\geq 3$, every graph $G$ without two vertex-disjoint cycles of length at least $\ell$ contains a set of at most $\ell$ vertices which meets all cycles of length at least $\ell$. They showed the existence of such a set of at most $2\ell+3$ vertices. This was improved by Meierling, Rautenbach and Sasse to $5\ell/3+29/2$. Here we present a proof showing that at most $3\ell/2+7/2$ vertices suffice.
Long twins in random words
Published • View Publication • BIB
Twins in a finite word are formed by a pair of identical subwords placed at disjoint sets of positions. We investigate the maximum length of twins in a random word over a $k$-letter alphabet. The obtained lower bounds for small values of $k$ significantly improve the best estimates known in the deterministic case. Bukh and Zhou in 2016 showed that every ternary word of length $n$ contains twins of length at least $0.34n$. Our main result states that in a random ternary word of length $n$, with high probability, one can find twins of length at least $0.41n$. In the general case of alphabets of size $k\geq 3$ we obtain analogous lower bounds of the form $\frac{1.64}{k+1}n$ which are better than the known deterministic bounds for $k\leq 354$. In addition, we present similar results for multiple twins in random words.

On extremal numbers of the triangle plus the four-cycle
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a family $\mathcal{F}$ of graphs, let $ex(n,\mathcal{F})$ denote the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph which contains none of the members of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. A longstanding problem in extremal graph theory asks to determine the function $ex(n,\{C_3,C_4\})$. Here we give a new construction for dense graphs of girth at least five with arbitrary number of vertices, providing the first improvement on the lower bound of $ex(n,\{C_3,C_4\})$ since 1976. As a corollary, this yields a negative answer to a problem in Chung-Graham [3].
On critical graphs for the chromatic edge-stability number
Published • View Publication • BIB
The {\em chromatic edge-stability number} $es_χ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of edges whose removal results in a spanning subgraph with the chromatic number smaller than that of $G$. A graph $G$ is called {\em $(3,2)$-critical} if $χ(G)=3$, $es_χ(G)=2$ and for any edge $e\in E(G)$, $es_χ(G-e)<es_χ(G)$. In this paper, we characterize $(3,2)$-critical graphs which contain at least five odd cycles. This answers a question proposed by Brešar, Klavžar and Movarraei in [Critical graphs for the chromatic edge-stability number, {\it Discrete Math.} {\bf 343}(2020) 111845].

On a conjecture of Nikiforov involving a spectral radius condition for a graph to contain all trees
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 345 (2022), 113112 • View Publication • BIB
We partly confirm a Brualdi-Solheid-Turán type conjecture due to Nikiforov, which is a spectral radius analogue of the well-known Erdős-Sós Conjecture that any tree of order $t$ is contained in a graph of average degree greater than $t-2$. We confirm Nikiforov's Conjecture for all brooms and for a larger class of spiders. For our proofs we also obtain a new Turán type result which might turn out to be of independent interest.
