Minimal obstructions to $2$-polar cographs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph is a cograph if it is $P_4$-free. A $k$-polar partition of a graph $G$ is a partition of the set of vertices of $G$ into parts $A$ and $B$ such that the subgraph induced by $A$ is a complete multipartite graph with at most $k$ parts, and the subgraph induced by $B$ is a disjoint union of at most $k$ cliques with no other edges. It is known that $k$-polar cographs can be characterized by a finite family of forbidden induced subgraphs, for any fixed $k$. A concrete family of such forbidden induced subgraphs is known for $k=1$, since $1$-polar graphs are precisely split graphs. For larger $k$ such families are not known, and Ekim, Mahadev, and de Werra explicitely asked for the family for $k=2$. In this paper we provide such a family, and show that the graphs can be obtained from four basic graphs by a natural operation that preserves $2$-polarity and also preserves the condition of being a cograph. We do not know such an operation for $k > 2$, nevertheless we believe that the results and methods discussed here will also be useful for higher $k$.

kirchhoff index and degree kirchhoff index of complete multipartite graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Kirchhoff index of a graph is defined as half of the sum of all effective resistance distances between any two vertices. Assuming a complete multipartite graph G, by methods from linear algebra we explicitly formulate effective resistance distances between any two vertices of G, and its Kirchhoff index. In rest of paper we explore extremal value of Kirchhoff index for multipartite graphs

The IC-indices of Some Complete Multipartite Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A coloring of a connected graph $G$ is a function $f$ mapping the vertex set of $G$ into the set of all integers. For any subgraph $H$ of $G$, we denote the sum of the values of $f$ on the vertices of $H$ as $f(H)$. If for any integer $k\in \{1,2,\cdots,f(G)\}$, there exists an induced connected subgraph $H$ of $G$ such that $f(H) = k$, then the coloring $f$ is called an IC-coloring of $G$. The IC-index of $G$, denoted as $M(G)$, is the maximum value of $f(G)$ over all possible IC-colorings $f$ of $G$. In this paper, we present a useful method from which a lower bound on the IC-index of any complete multipartite graph can be derived. Subsequently, we show that, for $m\geq 2 ~\mbox{and} ~n\geq 2$, our lower bound on $M(K_{1(n),m})$ is the exact value of it.

The $k$-proper index of complete bipartite and complete multipartite graphs
Let $G$ be a nontrivial connected graph of order $n$ with an edge-coloring $c:E(G)\rightarrow\{1,2,\dots,t\}$,$t\in\mathbb{N}$, where adjacent edges may be colored with the same color. A tree $T$ in $G$ is a \emph{proper tree} if no two adjacent edges of it are assigned the same color. Let $k$ be a fixed integer with $2\leq k\leq n$. For a vertex subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ with $|S|\geq 2$, a tree is called an \emph{$S$-tree} if it connects $S$ in $G$ . A \emph{$k$-proper coloring} of $G$ is an edge-coloring of $G$ having the property that for every set $S$ of $k$ vertices of $G$, there exists a proper $S$-tree $T$ in $G$. The minimum number of colors that are needed in a $k$-proper coloring of $G$ is defined as the \emph{$k$-proper index} of $G$, denoted by $px_k(G)$. In this paper, we determine the 3-proper index of all complete bipartite and complete multipartite graphs and partially determine the $k$-proper index of them for $k\geq 4$.
Some Results on Cyclic Interval Edge Colorings of Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A proper edge coloring of a graph $G$ with colors $1,2,\dots,t$ is called a \emph{cyclic interval $t$-coloring} if for each vertex $v$ of $G$ the edges incident to $v$ are colored by consecutive colors, under the condition that color $1$ is considered as consecutive to color $t$. We prove that a bipartite graph $G$ with even maximum degree $Δ(G)\geq 4$ admits a cyclic interval $Δ(G)$-coloring if for every vertex $v$ the degree $d_G(v)$ satisfies either $d_G(v)\geq Δ(G)-2$ or $d_G(v)\leq 2$. We also prove that every Eulerian bipartite graph $G$ with maximum degree at most $8$ has a cyclic interval coloring. Some results are obtained for $(a,b)$-biregular graphs, that is, bipartite graphs with the vertices in one part all having degree $a$ and the vertices in the other part all having degree $b$; it has been conjectured that all these have cyclic interval colorings. We show that all $(4,7)$-biregular graphs as well as all $(2r-2,2r)$-biregular ($r\geq 2$) graphs have cyclic interval colorings. Finally, we prove that all complete multipartite graphs admit cyclic interval colorings; this settles in the affirmative, a conjecture of Petrosyan and Mkhitaryan.

Distance proper connection of graphs
Let $G$ be an edge-colored connected graph. A path $P$ in $G$ is called a distance $\ell$-proper path if no two edges of the same color appear with fewer than $\ell$ edges in between on $P$. The graph $G$ is called $(k,\ell)$-proper connected if every pair of distinct vertices of $G$ are connected by $k$ pairwise internally vertex-disjoint distance $\ell$-proper paths in $G$. For a $k$-connected graph $G$, the minimum number of colors needed to make $G$ $(k,\ell)$-proper connected is called the $(k,\ell)$-proper connection number of $G$ and denoted by $pc_{k,\ell}(G)$. In this paper, we prove that $pc_{1,2}(G)\leq 5$ for any $2$-connected graph $G$. Considering graph operations, we find that $3$ is a sharp upper bound for the $(1,2)$-proper connection number of the join and the Cartesian product of almost all graphs. In addition, we find some basic properties of the $(k,\ell)$-proper connection number and determine the values of $pc_{1,\ell}(G)$ where $G$ is a traceable graph, a tree, a complete bipartite graph, a complete multipartite graph, a wheel, a cube or a permutation graph of a nontrivial traceable graph.
Edge-colorings of graphs avoiding complete graphs with a prescribed coloring
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a graph $F$ and an integer $r \ge 2$, a partition $\widehat{F}$ of the edge set of $F$ into at most $r$ classes, and a graph $G$, define $c_{r, \widehat{F}}(G)$ as the number of $r$-colorings of the edges of $G$ that do not contain a copy of $F$ such that the edge partition induced by the coloring is isomorphic to the one of $F$. We think of $\widehat{F}$ as the pattern of coloring that should be avoided. The main question is, for a large enough $n$, to find the (extremal) graph $G$ on $n$ vertices which maximizes $c_{r, \widehat{F}}(G)$. This problem generalizes a question of Erd{\H o}s and Rothschild, who originally asked about the number of colorings not containing a monochromatic clique (which is equivalent to the case where $F$ is a clique and the partition $\widehat{F}$ contains a single class). We use Hölder's Inequality together with Zykov's Symmetrization to prove that, for any $r \geq 2$, $k \geq 3$ and any pattern $\widehat{K_k}$ of the clique $K_k$, there exists a complete multipartite graph that is extremal. Furthermore, if the pattern $\widehat{K_k}$ has at least two classes, with the possible exception of two very small patterns (on three or four vertices), every extremal graph must be a complete multipartite graph. In the case that $r=3$ and $\widehat{F}$ is a rainbow triangle (that is, where $F=K_3$ and each part is a singleton), we show that an extremal graph must be an almost complete graph. Still for $r=3$, we extend a result about monochromatic patterns of Alon, Balogh, Keevash and Sudakov to some patterns that use two of the three colors, finding the exact extremal graph. For the later two results, we use the Regularity and Stability Method.

The Erdős-Rothschild problem on edge-colourings with forbidden monochromatic cliques
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathbf{k} := (k_1,\dots,k_s)$ be a sequence of natural numbers. For a graph $G$, let $F(G;\mathbf{k})$ denote the number of colourings of the edges of $G$ with colours $1,\dots,s$ such that, for every $c \in \{1,\dots,s\}$, the edges of colour $c$ contain no clique of order $k_c$. Write $F(n;\mathbf{k})$ to denote the maximum of $F(G;\mathbf{k})$ over all graphs $G$ on $n$ vertices. This problem was first considered by Erdős and Rothschild in 1974, but it has been solved only for a very small number of non-trivial cases. We prove that, for every $\mathbf{k}$ and $n$, there is a complete multipartite graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $F(G;\mathbf{k}) = F(n;\mathbf{k})$. Also, for every $\mathbf{k}$ we construct a finite optimisation problem whose maximum is equal to the limit of $\log_2 F(n;\mathbf{k})/{n\choose 2}$ as $n$ tends to infinity. Our final result is a stability theorem for complete multipartite graphs $G$, describing the asymptotic structure of such $G$ with $F(G;\mathbf{k}) = F(n;\mathbf{k}) \cdot 2^{o(n^2)}$ in terms of solutions to the optimisation problem.

Cyclic uniform 2-factorizations of the complete multipartite graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
The generalization of the Oberwolfach Problem, proposed by J. Liu in 2000, asks for a uniform $2$-factorization of the complete multipartite graph $K_{m\times n}$. Here we focus our attention on $2$-factorizations regular under the cyclic group $Z_{mn}$, whose $2$-factors are disjoint union of cycles all of even length $\ell$. In particular, we present a complete solution for the extremal cases $\ell=4$ and $\ell=mn$.

Line k-Arboricity in Product Networks
Published • View Publication • BIB
A \emph{linear $k$-forest} is a forest whose components are paths of length at most $k$. The \emph{linear $k$-arboricity} of a graph $G$, denoted by ${\rm la}_k(G)$, is the least number of linear $k$-forests needed to decompose $G$. Recently, Zuo, He and Xue studied the exact values of the linear $(n-1)$-arboricity of Cartesian products of various combinations of complete graphs, cycles, complete multipartite graphs. In this paper, for general $k$ we show that $\max\{{\rm la}_{k}(G),{\rm la}_{\ell}(H)\}\leq {\rm la}_{\max\{k,\ell\}}(G\Box H)\leq {\rm la}_{k}(G)+{\rm la}_{\ell}(H)$ for any two graphs $G$ and $H$. Denote by $G\circ H$, $G\times H$ and $G\boxtimes H$ the lexicographic product, direct product and strong product of two graphs $G$ and $H$, respectively. We also derive upper and lower bounds of ${\rm la}_{k}(G\circ H)$, ${\rm la}_{k}(G\times H)$ and ${\rm la}_{k}(G\boxtimes H)$ in this paper. The linear $k$-arboricity of a $2$-dimensional grid graph, a $r$-dimensional mesh, a $r$-dimensional torus, a $r$-dimensional generalized hypercube and a $2$-dimensional hyper Petersen network are also studied.

Decomposing $K_{u+w}-K_u$ into cycles of various lengths
We prove that the complete graph with a hole $K_{u+w}-K_u$ can be decomposed into cycles of arbitrary specified lengths provided that the obvious necessary conditions are satisfied, each cycle has length at most $\min(u,w)$, and the longest cycle is at most three times as long as the second longest. This generalises existing results on decomposing the complete graph with a hole into cycles of uniform length, and complements work on decomposing complete graphs, complete multigraphs, and complete multipartite graphs into cycles of arbitrary specified lengths.

Distance integral complete multipartite graphs with $s=5,6$
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $D(G)=(d_{ij})_{n\times n}$ denote the distance matrix of a connected graph $G$ with order $n$, where $d_{ij}$ is equal to the distance between vertices $v_{i}$ and $v_{j}$ in $G$. A graph is called distance integral if all eigenvalues of its distance matrix are integers. In 2014, Yang and Wang gave a sufficient and necessary condition for complete $r$-partite graphs $K_{p_{1},p_{2},\ldots,p_{r}}=K_{a_{1}\cdot p_{1},a_{2}\cdot p_{2},\ldots,a_{s}\cdot p_{s}}$ to be distance integral and obtained such distance integral graphs with $s=1,2,3,4$. However distance integral complete multipartite graphs $K_{a_{1}\cdot p_{1},a_{2}\cdot p_{2},\ldots,a_{s}\cdot p_{s}}$ with $s>4$ have not been found. In this paper, we find and construct some infinite classes of these distance integral graphs $K_{a_{1}\cdot p_{1},a_{2}\cdot p_{2},\ldots,a_{s}\cdot p_{s}}$ with $s=5,6$. The problem of the existence of such distance integral graphs $K_{a_{1}\cdot p_{1},a_{2}\cdot p_{2},\ldots,a_{s}\cdot p_{s}}$ with arbitrarily large number $s$ remains open.

On the pedant tree-connectivity of graphs
The concept of pedant tree-connectivity was introduced by Hager in 1985. For a graph $G=(V,E)$ and a set $S\subseteq V(G)$ of at least two vertices, \emph{an $S$-Steiner tree} or \emph{a Steiner tree connecting $S$} (or simply, \emph{an $S$-tree}) is a such subgraph $T=(V',E')$ of $G$ that is a tree with $S\subseteq V'$. For an $S$-Steiner tree, if the degree of each vertex in $S$ is equal to one, then this tree is called a \emph{pedant $S$-Steiner tree}. Two pedant $S$-Steiner trees $T$ and $T'$ are said to be \emph{internally disjoint} if $E(T)\cap E(T')=\varnothing$ and $V(T)\cap V(T')=S$. For $S\subseteq V(G)$ and $|S|\geq 2$, the \emph{local pedant-tree connectivity} $τ_G(S)$ is the maximum number of internally disjoint pedant $S$-Steiner trees in $G$. For an integer $k$ with $2\leq k\leq n$, \emph{$k$-pedant tree-connectivity} is defined as $τ_k(G)=\min\{τ_G(S)\,|\,S\subseteq V(G),|S|=k\}$. In this paper, we first study the sharp bounds of pedant tree-connectivity. Next, we obtain the exact value of a threshold graph, and give an upper bound of the pedant-tree $k$-connectivity of a complete multipartite graph. For a connected graph $G$, we show that $0\leq τ_k(G)\leq n-k$, and graphs with $τ_k(G)=n-k,n-k-1,n-k-2,0$ are characterized in this paper. In the end, we obtain the Nordhaus-Guddum type results for pedant tree-connectivity.
Equitable colorings of complete multipartite graphs
A $q$-\emph{equitable coloring} of a graph $G$ is a proper $q$-coloring such that the sizes of any two color classes differ by at most one. In contrast with ordinary coloring, a graph may have an equitable $q$-coloring but has no equitable $(q+1)$-coloring. The \emph{equitable chromatic threshold} is the minimum $p$ such that $G$ has an equitable $q$-coloring for every $q\geq p.$ In this paper, we establish the notion of $p(q: n_1,\ldots, n_k)$ which can be computed in linear-time and prove the following. Assume that $K_{n_1,\ldots,n_k}$ has an equitable $q$-coloring. Then $p(q: n_1,\ldots, n_k)$ is the minimum $p$ such that $K_{n_1,\ldots,n_k}$ has an equitable $r$-coloring for each $r$ satisfying $p \leq r \leq q.$ Since $K_{n_1,\ldots,n_k}$ has an equitable $(n_1+\cdots+n_k)$-coloring, the equitable chromatic threshold of $K_{n_1,\ldots,n_k}$ is $p(n_1+\cdots+n_k: n_1,\ldots, n_k).$ We find out later that the aforementioned immediate consequence is exactly the same as the formula of Yan and Wang \cite{YW12}. Nonetheless, the notion of $p(q: n_1,\ldots, n_k)$ can be used for each $q$ in which $K_{n_1,\ldots,n_k}$ has an equitable $q$-coloring and the proof presented here is much shorter.
Birational contractions of $\overline{\mathrm{M}}_{0,n}$ and combinatorics of extremal assignments
From Smyth's classification, modular compactifications of pointed smooth rational curves are indexed by combinatorial data, so-called extremal assignments. We explore their combinatorial structures and show that any extremal assignment is a finite union of atomic extremal assignments. We discuss a connection with the birational geometry of the moduli space of stable pointed curves. As applications, we study three special classes of extremal assignments: smooth, toric, and invariant with respect to the symmetric group action. We identify them with three combinatorial objects: simple intersecting families, complete multipartite graphs, and special families of integer partitions, respectively.

Interval minors of complete multipartite graphs
Interval minors of bipartite graphs were introduced by Jacob Fox in the study of Stanley-Wilf limits. Recently, Mohar, Rafiey, Tayfeh-Rezaie and Wu investigated the maximum number of edges in $K_{k,\ell}$-interval minor free bipartite graphs when $k=2$ and $k=3$. In this paper, we investigate the maximum number of edges in $K_{k,\ell}$-interval minor free bipartite graphs for general $k$ and $\ell$. We also study the maximum number of edges in $K_{\ell_1,\ell_2,\cdots,\ell_t}$-interval minor free multipartite graphs.

Unimodality of the independence polynomials of some composite graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $I(G;x)$ denote the independence polynomial of a graph $G$. In this paper we study the unimodality properties of $I(G;x)$ for some composite graphs $G$. Given two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$, let $G_1[G_2]$ denote the lexicographic product of $G_1$ and $G_2$. Assume $I(G_1;x)=\sum_{i\geq0}a_ix^i$ and $I(G_2;x)=\sum_{i\geq0}b_ix^i$, where $I(G_2;x)$ is log-concave. Then we prove (i) if $I(G_1;x)$ is log-concave and $(a^2_i-a_{i-1}a_{i+1})b^2_1\geq a_ia_{i-1}b_2$ for all $1\leq i \leq α(G_1)$, then $I(G_1[G_2];x)$ is log-concave; (ii) if $a_{i-1}\leq b_1a_i$ for $1\leq i\leq α(G_1)$, then $I(G_1[G_2];x)$ is unimodal. In particular, if $a_i$ is increasing in $i$, then $I(G_1[G_2];x)$ is unimodal. We also give two sufficient conditions when the independence polynomial of a complete multipartite graph is unimodal or log-concave. Finally, for every odd positive integer $α> 3$, we find a connected graph $G$ not a tree, such that $α(G) =α$, and $I(G; x)$ is symmetric and has only real zeros. This answers a problem of Mandrescu and Mirică.

Cyclic hamiltonian cycle systems of the complete multipartite graph: even number of parts
Published • View Publication • BIB
A hamiltonian cycle system (HCS, for short) of a graph $Γ$ is a partition of the edges of $Γ$ into hamiltonian cycles. A HCS is cyclic when it is invariant under a cyclic permutation of all the vertices of $Γ$; the existence problem for a cyclic HCS has been completely solved by Buratti and Del Fra in 2004 when $Γ$ is the complete graph $K_v$, $v$ odd, and by Jordon and Morris in 2008 when $Γ$ is the complete graph minus a $1$-factor $K_v-I$, $v$ even. In this work we present a complete solution to the existence problem of a cyclic HCS for $Γ= K_{m\times n}$, the complete multipartite graph, when the number of parts $m$ is even. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a cyclic and symmetric HCS of $Γ$; the notion of a symmetric HCS of a graph $Γ$ has been introduced in 2004 by Akiyama, Kobayashi, and Nakamura for $Γ=K_v$, $v$ odd, in 2011 by Brualdi and Schroeder when $Γ= K_v-I$, $v$ even, and, very recently, by Schroeder when $Γ$ is the complete multipartite graph.

Transversal designs and induced decompositions of graphs
We prove that for every complete multipartite graph $F$ there exist very dense graphs $G_n$ on $n$ vertices, namely with as many as ${n\choose 2}-cn$ edges for all $n$, for some constant $c=c(F)$, such that $G_n$ can be decomposed into edge-disjoint induced subgraphs isomorphic to~$F$. This result identifies and structurally explains a gap between the growth rates $O(n)$ and $Ω(n^{3/2})$ on the minimum number of non-edges in graphs admitting an induced $F$-decomposition.
