Small models of graph colouring manifolds and the Stiefel manifolds Hom(C_5, K_n)
We show Péter Csorba's conjecture that the graph homomorphism complex Hom(C_5,K_{n+2}) is homeomorphic to a Stiefel manifold, the space of unit tangent vectors to the n-dimensional sphere. For this a general tool is developed that allows to replace the complexes Hom(G, K_n) by smaller complexes that are homeomorphic to them whenever G is a graph for which those complexes are manifolds. The equivariant version of Csorba's conjecture is proved up to homotopy. We also study certain subdivisions of simplicial manifolds that are related to the interval poset of their face posets and their connection with geometric approximations to diagonal maps.

Combinatorial groupoids, cubical complexes, and the Lovasz conjecture
A foundation is laid for a theory of combinatorial groupoids, allowing us to use concepts like ``holonomy'', ``parallel transport'', ``bundles'', ``combinatorial curvature'' etc. in the context of simplicial (polyhedral) complexes, posets, graphs, polytopes and other combinatorial objects. A new, holonomy-type invariant for cubical complexes is introduced, leading to a combinatorial ``Theorema Egregium'' for cubical complexes non-embeddable into cubical lattices. Parallel transport of Hom-complexes and maps is used as a tool for extending Babson-Kozlov-Lovasz graph coloring results to more general statements about non-degenerate maps (colorings) of simplicial complexes and graphs.

Graph coloring manifolds
Published in Algebraic and Geometric Combinatorics, 51--69, Contemp. Math., 423, Amer. Math. Soc., Providence, RI, 2006 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a new and rich class of graph coloring manifolds via the Hom complex construction of Lovasz. The class comprises examples of Stiefel manifolds, series of spheres and products of spheres, cubical surfaces, as well as examples of Seifert manifolds. Asymptotically, graph coloring manifolds provide examples of highly connected, highly symmetric manifolds.

Notes on Nonrepetitive Graph Colouring
Published in Electronic J. Combinatorics 15:R99, 2008 • Search Publication
A vertex colouring of a graph is \emph{nonrepetitive on paths} if there is no path $v_1,v_2,...,v_{2t}$ such that v_i and v_{t+i} receive the same colour for all i=1,2,...,t. We determine the maximum density of a graph that admits a k-colouring that is nonrepetitive on paths. We prove that every graph has a subdivision that admits a 4-colouring that is nonrepetitive on paths. The best previous bound was 5. We also study colourings that are nonrepetitive on walks, and provide a conjecture that would imply that every graph with maximum degree $Δ$ has a $f(Δ)$-colouring that is nonrepetitive on walks. We prove that every graph with treewidth k and maximum degree $Δ$ has a $O(kΔ)$-colouring that is nonrepetitive on paths, and a $O(kΔ^3)$-colouring that is nonrepetitive on walks.

Latin squares and their defining sets
A Latin square $L(n,k)$ is a square of order $n$ with its entries colored with $k$ colors so that all the entries in a row or column have different colors. Let $d(L(n,k))$ be the minimal number of colored entries of an $n \times n$ square such that there is a unique way of coloring of the yet uncolored entries in order to obtain a Latin square $L(n, k)$. In this paper we discuss the properties of $d(L(n,k))$ for $k=2n-1$ and $k=2n-2$. We give an alternate proof of the identity $d(L(n, 2n-1))=n^2-n$, which holds for even $n$, and we establish the new result $d(L(n, 2n-2)) \geq n^2-\lfloor\frac{8n}{5}\rfloor$ and show that this bound is tight for $n$ divisible by 10.

Colouring an Orthogonality Graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
We deal with a graph colouring problem that arises in quantum information theory. Alice and Bob are each given a $\pm1$-vector of length $k$, and are to respond with $k$ bits. Their responses must be equal if they are given equal inputs, and distinct if they are given orthogonal inputs; however, they are not allowed to communicate any information about their inputs. They can always succeed using quantum entanglement, but their ability to succeed using only classical physics is equivalent to a graph colouring problem. We resolve the graph colouring problem, thus determining that they can succeed without entanglement exactly when $k\leq3$.
Grad and classes with bounded expansion I. decompositions
Published in KAM-DIMATIA Series 2005-739 (2005) 1-21 • Search Publication
We introduce classes of graphs with bounded expansion as a generalization of both proper minor closed classes and degree bounded classes. Such classes are based on a new invariant, the greatest reduced average density (grad) of G with rank r, grad r(G). For these classes we prove the existence of several partition results such as the existence of low tree-width and low tree-depth colorings. This generalizes and simplifies several earlier results (obtained for minor closed classes).

Grad and Classes with Bounded Expansion II. Algorithmic Aspects
Published in KAM-DIMATIA Series 2005-740 (2005) 1-20 • Search Publication
Classes of graphs with bounded expansion are a generalization of both proper minor closed classes and degree bounded classes. Such classes are based on a new invariant, the greatest reduced average density (grad) of G with rank r, ∇r(G). These classes are also characterized by the existence of several partition results such as the existence of low tree-width and low tree-depth colorings. These results lead to several new linear time algorithms, such as an algorithm for counting all the isomorphs of a fixed graph in an input graph or an algorithm for checking whether there exists a subset of vertices of a priori bounded size such that the subgraph induced by this subset satisfies some arbirtrary but fixed first order sentence. We also show that for fixed p, computing the distances between two vertices up to distance p may be performed in constant time per query after a linear time preprocessing. We also show, extending several earlier results, that a class of graphs has sublinear separators if it has sub-exponential expansion. This result result is best possible in general.
Grad and classes with bounded expansion III. restricted dualities
Published in KAM-DIMATIA Series 2005-741 (2005) 1-14 • Search Publication
We study restricted homomorphism dualities in the context of classes with bounded expansion. This presents a generalization of restricted dualities obtained earlier for bounded degree graphs and also for proper minor closed classes. This is related to distance coloring of graphs and to the ''approximative version'' of Hadwiger conjecture.
On the degree of regularity of generalized van der Waerden triples
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $1 \leq a \leq b$ be integers. A triple of the form $(x,ax+d,bx+2d)$, where $x,d$ are positive integers is called an {\em (a,b)-triple}. The {\em degree of regularity} of the family of all $(a,b)$-triples, denoted dor($a,b)$, is the maximum integer $r$ such that every $r$-coloring of $\mathbb{N}$ admits a monochromatic $(a,b)$-triple. We settle, in the affirmative, the conjecture that dor$(a,b) < \infty$ for all $(a,b) \neq (1,1)$. We also disprove the conjecture that dor($a,b) \in \{1,2,\infty\}$ for all $(a,b)$.

A general lower bound for mixing of single-site dynamics on graphs
Published in Annals of Applied Probability 2007, Vol. 17, No. 3, 931-952 • View Publication • BIB
We prove that any Markov chain that performs local, reversible updates on randomly chosen vertices of a bounded-degree graph necessarily has mixing time at least $Ω(n\log n)$, where $n$ is the number of vertices. Our bound applies to the so-called ``Glauber dynamics'' that has been used extensively in algorithms for the Ising model, independent sets, graph colorings and other structures in computer science and statistical physics, and demonstrates that many of these algorithms are optimal up to constant factors within their class. Previously, no superlinear lower bound was known for this class of algorithms. Though widely conjectured, such a bound had been proved previously only in very restricted circumstances, such as for the empty graph and the path. We also show that the assumption of bounded degree is necessary by giving a family of dynamics on graphs of unbounded degree with mixing time O(n).

On lengths of rainbow cycles
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 13 (2006), no. 1, Research Paper 105, 14 pp. (electronic) • View Publication • BIB
We prove several results regarding edge-colored complete graphs and rainbow cycles, cycles with no color appearing on more than one edge. We settle a question posed by Ball, Pultr, and Vojtěchovský by showing that if such a coloring does not contain a rainbow cycle of length $n$, where $n$ is odd, then it also does not contain a rainbow cycle of length $m$ for all $m$ greater than $2n^2$. In addition, we present two examples which demonstrate that this result does not hold for even $n$. Finally, we state several open problems in the area.

A short proof of w_1^n(Hom(C_{2r+1}, K_{n+2}))=0 for all n and a graph colouring theorem by Babson and Kozlov
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that the n-th power of the first Stiefel-Whitney class of the Z_2-operation on the graph complex Hom(C_{2r+1},K_{n+2})$ is zero, confirming a conjecture by Babson and Kozlov. This proves the strong form of their graph colouring theorem, which they had only proven for odd n. Our proof is also considerably simpler than their proof of the weak form of the theorem, which is also known as the Lovász conjecture.

Link complexes of subspace arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a simplicial hyperplane arrangement H and a subspace arrangement A embedded in H, we define a simplicial complex Delta_{A,H} as the subdivision of the link of A induced by H. In particular, this generalizes Steingrimsson's coloring complex of a graph. We do the following: (1) When A is a hyperplane arrangement, Delta_{A,H} is shown to be shellable. As a special case, we answer affirmatively a question of Steingrimsson on coloring complexes. (2) For H being a Coxeter arrangement of type A or B we obtain a close connection between the Hilbert series of the Stanley-Reisner ring of Delta_{A,H} and the characteristic polynomial of A. This extends results of Steingrimsson and provides an interpretation of chromatic polynomials of hypergraphs and signed graphs in terms of Hilbert polynomials.

Colouring Lines in Projective Space

Let $V$ be a vector space of dimension $v$ over a field of order $q$. The $q$-Kneser graph has the $k$-dimensional subspaces of $V$ as its vertices, where two subspaces $α$ and $β$ are adjacent if and only if $α\capβ$ is the zero subspace. This paper is motivated by the problem of determining the chromatic numbers of these graphs. This problem is trivial when $k=1$ (and the graphs are complete) or when $v<2k$ (and the graphs are empty). We establish some basic theory in the general case. Then specializing to the case $k=2$, we show that the chromatic number is $q^2+q$ when $v=4$ and $(q^{v-1}-1)/(q-1)$ when $v > 4$. In both cases we characterise the minimal colourings.

Cohomology of colorings of cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
We compute the cohomology groups of the spaces of colorings of cycles, i.e., of the prodsimplicial complexes Hom(C_m,K_n). We perform the computation first with Z_2, and then with integer coefficients. The main technical tool is to use spectral sequences in conjunction with a detailed combinatorial analysis of a family of cubical complexes, which we call torus front complexes. As an application of our method, we demonstrate how to collapse each connected component of Hom(C_m,C_n) onto a garland of cubes.

On Monochromatic Ascending Waves
Published • View Publication • BIB
A sequence of positive integers $w_1,w_2,...,w_n$ is called an ascending wave if $w_{i+1}-w_i \geq w_i - w_{i-1}$ for $2 \leq i \leq n-1$. For integers $k,r\geq1$, let $AW(k;r)$ be the least positive integer such that under any $r$-coloring of $[1,AW(k;r)]$ there exists a $k$-term monochromatic ascending wave. The existence of $AW(k;r)$ is guaranteed by van der Waerden's theorem on arithmetic progressions since an arithmetic progression is, itself, an ascending wave. Originally, Brown, Erdős, and Freedman defined such sequences and proved that $k^2-k+1\leq AW(k;2) \leq {1/3}(k^3-4k+9)$. Alon and Spencer then showed that $AW(k;2) = O(k^3)$. In this article, we show that $AW(k;3) = O(k^5)$ as well as offer a proof of the existence of $AW(k;r)$ independent of van der Waerden's theorem. Furthermore, we prove that for any $ε> 0$, $$ \frac{k^{2r-1-ε}}{2^{r-1}(40r)^{r^2-1}}(1+o(1)) \leq AW(k;r) \leq \frac{k^{2r-1}}{(2r-1)!}(1+o(1)) $$ holds for all $r \geq 1$, which, in particular, improves upon the best known upper bound for $AW(k;2)$. Additionally, we show that for fixed $k \geq 3$, $$ AW(k;r)\leq\frac{2^{k-2}}{(k-1)!} r^{k-1}(1+o(1)). $$

Combinatorial secant varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
The construction of joins and secant varieties is studied in the combinatorial context of monomial ideals. For ideals generated by quadratic monomials, the generators of the secant ideals are obstructions to graph colorings, and this leads to a commutative algebra version of the Strong Perfect Graph Theorem. Given any projective variety and any term order, we explore whether the initial ideal of the secant ideal coincides with the secant ideal of the initial ideal. For toric varieties, this leads to the notion of delightful triangulations of convex polytopes.

Coloured peak algebras and Hopf algebras
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 24 (2006), no. 3, 299-330 • View Publication • BIB
For $G$ a finite abelian group, we study the properties of general equivalence relations on $G_n=G^n\rtimes \SG_n$, the wreath product of $G$ with the symmetric group $\SG_n$, also known as the $G$-coloured symmetric group. We show that under certain conditions, some equivalence relations give rise to subalgebras of $\k G_n$ as well as graded connected Hopf subalgebras of $\bigoplus_{n\ge o} \k G_n$. In particular we construct a $G$-coloured peak subalgebra of the Mantaci-Reutenauer algebra (or $G$-coloured descent algebra). We show that the direct sum of the $G$-coloured peak algebras is a Hopf algebra. We also have similar results for a $G$-colouring of the Loday-Ronco Hopf algebras of planar binary trees. For many of the equivalence relations under study, we obtain a functor from the category of finite abelian groups to the category of graded connected Hopf algebras. We end our investigation by describing a Hopf endomorphism of the $G$-coloured descent Hopf algebra whose image is the $G$-coloured peak Hopf algebra. We outline a theory of combinatorial $G$-coloured Hopf algebra for which the $G$-coloured quasi-symmetric Hopf algebra and the graded dual to the $G$-coloured peak Hopf algebra are central objects.

A short proof of a conjecture on the higher connectivity of graph coloring complexes
The Hom-complexes were introduced by Lovasz to study topological obstructions to graph colorings. It was conjectured by Babson and Kozlov, and proved by Cukic and Kozlov, that Hom(G,K_n) is (n-d-2)-connected, where d is the maximal degree of a vertex of G. We give a short proof of the conjecture.
