On the Maximum Number of Edges in Hypergraphs with Fixed Matching and Clique Number
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a $k$-graph $\mathcal{F}\subset \binom{[n]}{k}$, the clique number of $\mathcal{F}$ is defined to be the maximum size of a subset $Q$ of $[n]$ with $\binom{Q}{k}\subset \mathcal{F}$. In the present paper, we determine the maximum number of edges in a $k$-graph on $[n]$ with matching number at most $s$ and clique number at least $q$ for $n\geq 8k^2s$ and for $q \geq (s+1)k-l$, $n\leq (s+1)k+s/(3k)-l$. Two special cases that $q=(s+1)k-2$ and $k=2$ are solved completely.

The Inductive Graph Dimension from The Minimum Edge Clique Cover
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we prove that the inductively defined graph dimension has a simple additive property under the join operation. The dimension of the join of two simple graphs is one plus the sum of the dimensions of the component graphs: $\mathrm{dim}\, (G_1+ G_2) = 1 +\mathrm{dim}\, G_1+ \mathrm{dim}\, G_2$. We use this formula to derive an expression for the inductive dimension of an arbitrary finite simple graph from its minimum edge clique cover. A corollary of the formula is that any arbitrary finite simple graph whose maximal cliques are all of order $N$ has dimension $N-1$. We finish by finding lower and upper bounds on the inductive dimension of a simple graph in terms of its clique number.

Intersecting longest paths in chordal graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the size of the smallest set of vertices required to intersect every longest path in a chordal graph. Such sets are known as longest path transversals. We show that if $ω(G)$ is the clique number of a chordal graph $G$, then there is a transversal of order at most $4\lceil\frac{ω(G)}{5}\rceil$. We also consider the analogous question for longest cycles, and show that if $G$ is a 2-connected chordal graph then there is a transversal intersecting all longest cycles of order at most $2\lceil\frac{ω(G)}{3}\rceil$.

Local boxicity
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 102 (2022), 103495 • View Publication • BIB
A box is the cartesian product of real intervals, which are either bounded or equal to $\mathbb{R}$. A box is said to be $d$-local if at most $d$ of the intervals are bounded. In this paper, we investigate the recently introduced local boxicity of a graph $G$, which is the minimum $d$ such that $G$ can be represented as the intersection of $d$-local boxes in some dimension. We prove that all graphs of maximum degree $Δ$ have local boxicity $O(Δ)$, while almost all graphs of maximum degree $Δ$ have local boxicity $Ω(Δ)$, improving known upper and lower bounds. We also give improved bounds on the local boxicity as a function of the number of edges or the genus. Finally, we investigate local boxicity through the lens of chromatic graph theory. We prove that the family of graphs of local boxicity at most 2 is $χ$-bounded, which means that the chromatic number of the graphs in this class can be bounded by a function of their clique number. This extends a classical result on graphs of boxicity at most 2.
Degeneracy of $P_t$-free and $C_{\geq t}$-free graphs with no large complete bipartite subgraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A hereditary class of graphs $\mathcal{G}$ is \emph{$χ$-bounded} if there exists a function $f$ such that every graph $G \in \mathcal{G}$ satisfies $χ(G) \leq f(ω(G))$, where $χ(G)$ and $ω(G)$ are the chromatic number and the clique number of $G$, respectively. As one of the first results about $χ$-bounded classes, Gyárfás proved in 1985 that if $G$ is $P_t$-free, i.e., does not contain a $t$-vertex path as an induced subgraph, then $χ(G) \leq (t-1)^{ω(G)-1}$. In 2017, Chudnovsky, Scott, and Seymour proved that $C_{\geq t}$-free graphs, i.e., graphs that exclude induced cycles with at least $t$ vertices, are $χ$-bounded as well, and the obtained bound is again superpolynomial in the clique number. Note that $P_{t-1}$-free graphs are in particular $C_{\geq t}$-free. It remains a major open problem in the area whether for $C_{\geq t}$-free, or at least $P_t$-free graphs $G$, the value of $χ(G)$ can be bounded from above by a polynomial function of $ω(G)$. We consider a relaxation of this problem, where we compare the chromatic number with the size of a largest balanced biclique contained in the graph as a (not necessarily induced) subgraph. We show that for every $t$ there exists a constant $c$ such that for and every $C_{\geq t}$-free graph which does not contain $K_{\ell,\ell}$ as a subgraph, it holds that $χ(G) \leq \ell^{c}$.
On the maximal number of elements pairwise generating the symmetric group of even degree
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G$ be the symmetric group of degree $n$. Let $ω(G)$ be the maximal size of a subset $S$ of $G$ such that $\langle x,y \rangle = G$ whenever $x,y \in S$ and $x \neq y$ and let $σ(G)$ be the minimal size of a family of proper subgroups of $G$ whose union is $G$. We prove that both functions $σ(G)$ and $ω(G)$ are asymptotically equal to $\frac{1}{2} \binom{n}{n/2}$ when $n$ is even. This, together with a result of S. Blackburn, implies that $σ(G)/ω(G)$ tends to $1$ as $n \to \infty$. Moreover, we give a lower bound of $(1-o(1))n$ on $ω(G)$ which is independent of the classification of finite simple groups. We also calculate, for large enough $n$, the clique number of the graph defined as follows: the vertices are the elements of $G$ and two vertices $x,y$ are connected by an edge if $\langle x,y \rangle \geq A_n$.

On the problem of the finiteness of the compressed zero divisor graphs of Artinian rings
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let R be an Artinian ring and G be the compressed zero-divisor graph associated to R. The question of when the clique number of compressed zero-divisor graphs is finite was raised by J. Coykendall, S. Sather-Wagstaff, L. Sheppardson, and S. Spiroff, in their survey paper entitled On Zero-divisor Graphs. They proved that if length of R is at most four then the clique number is finite. In the length six case they gave an example of a ring where the clique is infinite. In this paper we show that when length of ring is five then the clique number of compressed zero-divisor graph is finite.

On the directions determined by Cartesian products and the clique number of generalized Paley graphs
Published in Integers 21 (2021), Paper No. A51, 31 pp • Search Publication
It is known that the number of directions formed by a Cartesian product $A \times B \subset AG(2,p)$ is at least $|A||B| - \min\{|A|,|B|\} + 2$, provided $p$ is prime and $|A||B|<p$. This implies the best known upper bound on the clique number of the Paley graph over $\mathbb{F}_p$. In this paper, we extend this result to $AG(2,q)$, where $q$ is a prime power. We also give improved upper bounds on the clique number of generalized Paley graphs over $\mathbb{F}_q$. In particular, for a cubic Paley graph, we improve the trivial upper bound $\sqrt{q}$ to $0.769\sqrt{q}+1$. In general, as an application of our key result on the number of directions, for any positive function $h$ such that $h(x)=o(x)$ as $x \to \infty$, we improve the trivial upper bound $\sqrt{q}$ to $\sqrt{q}-h(p)$ for almost all non-squares $q$.

The Szemerédi-Petruska conjecture for a few small values
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let H be a 3-uniform hypergraph of order n with clique number k such that the intersection of all maximum cliques of H is empty. For fixed m=n-k, Szemerédi and Petruska conjectured the sharp bound $n\leq {m+2\choose 2}$. In this note the conjecture is verified for m=2,3 and 4.

Zero-Divisor Graphs of $\mathbb{Z}_n$, their products and $D_n$
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper is an endeavor to discuss some properties of zero-divisor graphs of the ring $\mathbb{Z}_n$, the ring of integers modulo $n$. The zero divisor graph of a commutative ring $R$, is an undirected graph whose vertices are the nonzero zero-divisors of $R$, where two distinct vertices are adjacent if their product is zero. The zero divisor graph of $R$ is denoted by $Γ(R)$. We discussed $Γ(\mathbb{Z}_n)$'s by the attributes of completeness, k-partite structure, complete k-partite structure, regularity, chordality, $γ- β$ perfectness, simplicial vertices. The clique number for arbitrary $Γ(\mathbb{Z}_n)$ was also found. This work also explores related attributes of finite products $Γ(\mathbb{Z}_{n_1}\times\cdots\times\mathbb{Z}_{n_k})$, seeking to extend certain results to the product rings. We find all $Γ(\mathbb{Z}_{n_1}\times\cdots\times\mathbb{Z}_{n_k})$ that are perfect. Likewise, a lower bound of clique number of $Γ(\mathbb{Z}_m\times\mathbb{Z}_n)$ was found. Later, in this paper we discuss some properties of the zero divisor graph of the poset $D_n$, the set of positive divisors of a positive integer $n$ partially ordered by divisibility.

Extremal results for graphs of bounded metric dimension
Published • View Publication • BIB
Metric dimension is a graph parameter motivated by problems in robot navigation, drug design, and image processing. In this paper, we answer several open extremal problems on metric dimension and pattern avoidance in graphs from (Geneson, Metric dimension and pattern avoidance, Discrete Appl. Math. 284, 2020, 1-7). Specifically, we construct a new family of graphs that allows us to determine the maximum possible degree of a graph of metric dimension at most $k$, the maximum possible degeneracy of a graph of metric dimension at most $k$, the maximum possible chromatic number of a graph of metric dimension at most $k$, and the maximum $n$ for which there exists a graph of metric dimension at most $k$ that contains $K_{n, n}$. We also investigate a variant of metric dimension called edge metric dimension and solve another problem from the same paper for $n$ sufficiently large by showing that the edge metric dimension of $P_n^{d}$ is $d$ for $n \geq d^{d-1}$. In addition, we use a probabilistic argument to make progress on another open problem from the same paper by showing that the maximum possible clique number of a graph of edge metric dimension at most $k$ is $2^{Θ(k)}$. We also make progress on a problem from (N. Zubrilina, On the edge dimension of a graph, Discrete Math. 341, 2018, 2083-2088) by finding a family of new triples $(x, y, n)$ for which there exists a graph of metric dimension $x$, edge metric dimension $y$, and order $n$. In particular, we show that for each integer $k > 0$, there exist graphs $G$ with metric dimension $k$, edge metric dimension $3^k(1-o(1))$, and order $3^k(1+o(1))$.

Enhancing the Erdős-Lovász Tihany Conjecture for line graphs of multigraphs
Published in Journal of Graph Theory, 2022, 1-8 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we prove an enhanced version of the Erdős-Lovász Tihany Conjecture for line graphs of multigraphs. That is, for every graph $G$ whose chromatic number $χ(G)$ is more than its clique number $ω(G)$ and for nonnegative integer $\ell$, any two integers $s,t \geq 3.5\ell+2$ with $s+t = χ(G)+1$, there is a partition $(S,T)$ of the vertex set $V(G)$ such that $χ(G[S])\geq s$ and $χ(G[T])\geq t+\ell$. In particular, when $\ell=1$, we can obtain the same result just for any $s,t\geq4$. The Erdős-Lovász Tihany conjecture is a special case when $\ell=0$.

Enhancing the Erdős-Lovász Tihany Conjecture for graphs with independence number two
Let $s\ge2$ and $t\ge2$ be integers. A graph $G$ is $(s,t)$-\emph{splittable} if $V(G)$ can be partitioned into two sets $S$ and $T$ such that $χ(G[S])\geq s$ and $χ(G[T])\geq t$. The well-known Erdős-Lovász Tihany Conjecture from 1968 states that every graph $G$ whose chromatic number $χ(G)=s+t-1$ is more than its clique number $ω(G)$ is $(s,t)$-splittable. In this paper, we prove an enhanced version of the Erdős-Lovász Tihany Conjecture for graphs with independence number two. That is, for every graph $G$ with $χ(G)=s+t-1>ω(G)+1$ is $(s,t+1)$-splittable. There are examples showing that this result is best possible.

Coloring the normalized Laplacian for oriented hypergraphs
Published in Linear Algebra and Its Applications, 629:192-207 (2021) • View Publication • BIB
The independence number, coloring number and related parameters are investigated in the setting of oriented hypergraphs using the spectrum of the normalized Laplace operator. For the independence number, both an inertia--like bound and a ratio--like bound are shown. A Sandwich Theorem involving the clique number, the vector chromatic number and the coloring number is proved, as well as a lower bound for the vector chromatic number in terms of the smallest and the largest eigenvalue of the normalized Laplacian. In addition, spectral partition numbers are studied in relation to the coloring number.

The bounds of the spectral radius of general hypergraphs in terms of clique number
Published • View Publication • BIB
The spectral radius (or the signless Laplacian spectral radius) of a general hypergraph is the maximum modulus of the eigenvalues of its adjacency (or its signless Laplacian) tensor. In this paper, we firstly obtain a lower bound of the spectral radius (or the signless Laplacian spectral radius) of general hypergraphs in terms of clique number. Moreover, we present a relation between a homogeneous polynomial and the clique number of general hypergraphs. As an application, we finally obtain an upper bound of the spectral radius of general hypergraphs in terms of clique number.
An improved procedure for colouring graphs of bounded local density
Published in Advances in Combinatorics, 2022:7, 33pp • View Publication • BIB
We develop an improved bound for the chromatic number of graphs of maximum degree $Δ$ under the assumption that the number of edges spanning any neighbourhood is at most $(1-σ)\binomΔ{2}$ for some fixed $0<σ<1$. The leading term in the reduction of colours achieved through this bound is best possible as $σ\to0$. As two consequences, we advance the state of the art in two longstanding and well-studied graph colouring conjectures, the Erdős-Nešetřil conjecture and Reed's conjecture. We prove that the strong chromatic index is at most $1.772Δ^2$ for any graph $G$ with sufficiently large maximum degree $Δ$. We prove that the chromatic number is at most $\lceil 0.881(Δ+1)+0.119ω\rceil$ for any graph $G$ with clique number $ω$ and sufficiently large maximum degree $Δ$. Additionally, we show how our methods can be adapted under the additional assumption that the codegree is at most $(1-σ)Δ$, and establish what may be considered first progress towards a conjecture of Vu.

Treewidth versus clique number. I. Graph classes with a forbidden structure
Published • View Publication • BIB
Treewidth is an important graph invariant, relevant for both structural and algorithmic reasons. A necessary condition for a graph class to have bounded treewidth is the absence of large cliques. We study graph classes closed under taking induced subgraphs in which this condition is also sufficient, which we call $(tw,ω)$-bounded. Such graph classes are known to have useful algorithmic applications related to variants of the clique and $k$-coloring problems. We consider six well-known graph containment relations: the minor, topological minor, subgraph, induced minor, induced topological minor, and induced subgraph relations. For each of them, we give a complete characterization of the graphs $H$ for which the class of graphs excluding $H$ is $(tw,ω)$-bounded. Our results yield an infinite family of $χ$-bounded induced-minor-closed graph classes and imply that the class of $1$-perfectly orientable graphs is $(tw,ω)$-bounded, leading to linear-time algorithms for $k$-coloring $1$-perfectly orientable graphs for every fixed~$k$. This answers a question of Bre\v sar, Hartinger, Kos, and Milani{\v c} from 2018 and one of Beisegel, Chudnovsky, Gurvich, Milani{\v c}, and Servatius from 2019, respectively. We also reveal some further algorithmic implications of $(tw,ω)$-boundedness related to list $k$-coloring and clique problems. In addition, we propose a question about the complexity of the maximum weight independent set problem in $(tw,ω)$-bounded graph classes and prove that the problem is polynomial-time solvable in every class of graphs excluding a fixed star as an induced minor.
Proper divisor graph of a positive integer
The proper divisor graph $Υ_n$ of a positive integer $n$ is the simple graph whose vertices are the proper divisors of $n$, and in which two distinct vertices $u, v$ are adjacent if and only if $n$ divides $uv$. The graph $Υ_n$ plays an important role in the study of the zero divisor graph of the ring $\mathbb{Z}_n$. In this paper, we study some graph theoretic properties of $Υ_n$ and determine the graph parameters such as clique number, chromatic number, chromatic index, independence number, matching number, domination number, vertex and edge covering numbers of $Υ_n$. We also determine the automorphism group of $Υ_n$.
Homogeneous sets, clique-separators, critical graphs, and optimal $χ$-binding functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a set $\mathcal{H}$ of graphs, let $f_\mathcal{H}^\star\colon \mathbb{N}_{>0}\to \mathbb{N}_{>0}$ be the optimal $χ$-binding function of the class of $\mathcal{H}$-free graphs, that is, $$f_\mathcal{H}^\star(ω)=\max\{χ(G): G\text{ is } \mathcal{H}\text{-free, } ω(G)=ω\}.$$ In this paper, we combine the two decomposition methods by homogeneous sets and clique-separators in order to determine optimal $χ$-binding functions for subclasses of $P_5$-free graphs and of $(C_5,C_7,\ldots)$-free graphs. In particular, we prove the following for each $ω\geq 1$: (i) $\ f_{\{P_5,banner\}}^\star(ω)=f_{3K_1}^\star(ω)\in Θ(ω^2/\log(ω)),$ (ii) $\ f_{\{P_5,co-banner\}}^\star(ω)=f^\star_{\{2K_2\}}(ω)\in\mathcal{O}(ω^2),$ (iii) $\ f_{\{C_5,C_7,\ldots,banner\}}^\star(ω)=f^\star_{\{C_5,3K_1\}}(ω)\notin \mathcal{O}(ω),$ and (iv) $\ f_{\{P_5,C_4\}}^\star(ω)=\lceil(5ω-1)/4\rceil.$ We also characterise, for each of our considered graph classes, all graphs $G$ with $χ(G)>χ(G-u)$ for each $u\in V(G)$. From these structural results, we can prove Reed's conjecture -- relating chromatic number, clique number, and maximum degree of a graph -- for $(P_5,banner)$-free graphs.

Coloring of ($P_5$, $4$-wheel)-free graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 345(5) (2022) Article no:112795 • View Publication • BIB
For a graph $G$, $χ(G)$ $(ω(G))$ denote its chromatic (clique) number. A $P_5$ is the chordless path on five vertices, and a $4$-$wheel$ is the graph consisting of a chordless cycle on four vertices $C_4$ plus an additional vertex adjacent to all the vertices of the $C_4$. In this paper, we show that every ($P_5$, $4$-wheel)-free graph $G$ satisfies $χ(G)\leq \frac{3}{2}ω(G)$. Moreover, this bound is almost tight. That is, there is a class of ($P_5$, $4$-wheel)-free graphs $\cal L$ such that every graph $H\in \cal L$ satisfies $χ(H)\geq\frac{10}{7}ω(H)$. This generalizes/improves several previously known results in the literature.
