Tridiagonal real symmetric matrices with a connection to Pascal's triangle and the Fibonacci sequence
We explore a certain family $\{A_n\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ of $n \times n$ tridiagonal real symmetric matrices. After deriving a three-term recurrence relation for the characteristic polynomials of this family, we find a closed form solution. The coefficients of these characteristic polynomials turn out to involve the diagonal entries of Pascal's triangle in a tantalizingly predictive manner. Lastly, we explore a relation between the eigenvalues of various members of the family. More specifically, we give a sufficient condition on the values $m,n \in \mathbb{N}$ for when $\texttt{spec}(A_m)$ is contained in $\texttt{spec}(A_n)$. We end the paper with a number of open questions, one of which intertwines our characteristic polynomials with the Fibonacci sequence in an intriguing manner involving ellipses.

We introduce a new one-variable polynomial invariant of graphs, which we call the skew characteristic polynomial. For an oriented simple graph, this is just the characteristic polynomial of its anti-symmetric adjacency matrix. For nonoriented simple graphs the definition is different, but for a certain class of graphs (namely, for intersection graphs of chord diagrams), it gives the same answer if we endow such a graph with an orientation induced by the chord diagram. We prove that this invariant satisfies Vassiliev's $4$-term relations and determines therefore a finite type knot invariant. We investigate the behaviour of the polynomial with respect to the Hopf algebra structure on the space of graphs and show that it takes a constant value on any primitive element in this Hopf algebra. We also provide a two-variable extension of the skew characteristic polynomial to embedded graphs and delta-matroids. The $4$-term relations for the extended polynomial prove that it determines a finite type invariant of multicomponent links.
A Generalized Grover/Zeta Correspondence
We introduce a generalized Grover matrix of a graph and present an explicit formula for its characteristic polynomial. As a corollary, we give the spectra for the generalized Grover matrix of a regular graph. Next, we define a zeta function and a generalized zeta function of a graph $G$ with respect to its generalized Grover matrix as an analog of the Ihara zeta function and present explicit formulas for their zeta functions for a vertex-transitive graph. As applications, we express the limit on the generalized zeta functions of a family of finite vertex-transitive regular graphs by an integral. Furthermore, we give the limit on the generalized zeta functions of a family of finite tori as an integral expression.
$k$-spectrally monomorphic tournaments
A tournament is $k$-spectrally monomorphic if all the $k\times k$ principal submatrices of its adjacency matrix have the same characteristic polynomial. Transitive $n$-tournaments are trivially $k$-spectrally monomorphic. We show that there are no other for $k\in \{3,\ldots,n-3\} $. Furthermore, we prove that for $n\geq 5$, a non-transitive $n$-tournament is $(n-2)$-spectrally monomorphic if and only if it is doubly regular. Finally, we give some results on $(n-1)$-spectrally monomorphic regular tournaments.
Quantum walks do not like bridges

We consider graphs with two cut vertices joined by a path with one or two edges, and prove that there can be no quantum perfect state transfer between these vertices, unless the graph has no other vertex. We achieve this result by applying the 1-sum lemma for the characteristic polynomial of graphs, the neutrino identities that relate entries of eigenprojectors and eigenvalues, and variational principles for eigenvalues (Cauchy interlacing, Weyl inequalities and Wielandt minimax principle). We see our result as an intermediate step to broaden the understanding of how connectivity plays a key role in quantum walks, and as further evidence of the conjecture that no tree on four or more vertices admits state transfer. We conclude with some open problems.

A hyperplane arrangement in $\mathbb{R}^n$ is a finite collection of affine hyperplanes. The regions are the connected components of the complement of these hyperplanes. By a theorem of Zaslavsky, the number of regions of a hyperplane arrangement is the sum of coefficients of its characteristic polynomial. Arrangements that contain hyperplanes parallel to subspaces whose defining equations are $x_i - x_j = 0$ form an important class called the deformations of the braid arrangement. In a recent work, Bernardi showed that regions of certain deformations are in one-to-one correspondence with certain labeled trees. In this article, we define a statistic on these trees such that the distribution is given by the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial. In particular, our statistic applies to well-studied families like extended Catalan, Shi, Linial and semiorder.
On the moments of moments of random matrices and Ehrhart polynomials

There has been significant interest in studying the asymptotics of certain generalised moments, called the moments of moments, of characteristic polynomials of random Haar-distributed unitary and symplectic matrices, as the matrix size $N$ goes to infinity. These quantities depend on two parameters $k$ and $q$ and when both of them are positive integers it has been shown that these moments are in fact polynomials in the matrix size $N$. In this paper we classify the integer roots of these polynomials and moreover prove that the polynomials themselves satisfy a certain symmetry property. This confirms some predictions from the thesis of Bailey. The proof uses the Ehrhart-Macdonald reciprocity for rational convex polytopes and certain bijections between lattice points in some polytopes.

In this paper, we describe the structure of the Laplace characteristic polynomial $χ_n(λ)$ for the infinite family of graphs $H_n=H_n(G_1,\,G_2,\ldots,G_m)$ obtained as a circulant foliation over a graph $H$ on $m$ vertices with fibers $G_1,\,G_2,\ldots,G_m.$ Each fiber $G_i=C_n(s_{i,1},\,s_{i,2},\ldots,s_{i,k_i})$ of this foliation is the circulant graph on $n$ vertices with jumps $s_{i,1},\,s_{i,2},\ldots,s_{i,k_i}.$ This family includes the family of generalized Petersen graphs, $I$-graphs, sandwiches of circulant graphs, discrete torus graphs and others. We show that the characteristic polynomial for such graphs can be decomposed into a finite product of algebraic functions evaluated at the roots of a linear combination of Chebyshev polynomials. Also, we prove that the characteristic polynomial can be represented in the form $χ_n(λ)=p(λ)\,χ_H(λ)a(n)^2,$ where $a(n)$ is a sequence of integer polynomials and $p(λ)$ is a prescribed integer polynomial. Moreover, we use the obtained results to produce analytic formulas for spectral graph invariants, such as the number of spanning trees and the number of spanning rooted forests.

We introduce a new family of hyperplane arrangements inspired by the homogenized Linial arrangement (which was recently introduced by Hetyei), and show that the intersection lattices of these arrangements are isomorphic to the bond lattices of Ferrers graphs. Using recent work of Lazar and Wachs we are able to give combinatorial interpretations of the characteristic polynomials of these arrangements in terms of permutation enumeration. For certain infinite families of these hyperplane arrangements, we are able to give generating function formulas for their characteristic polynomials. To do so, we develop a generalization of Dumont's surjective staircases, and introduce a polynomial which enumerates these generalized surjective staircases according to several statistics. We prove a recurrence for these polynomials and show that in certain special cases this recurrence can be solved explicitly to yield a generating function. We also prove refined versions of several of these results using the theory of complex hyperplane arrangements.
Deletion-contraction for a unified Laplacian and applications

We define a graph Laplacian with vertex weights in addition to the more classical edge weights, which unifies the combinatorial Laplacian and the normalised Laplacian. Moreover, we give a combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients of the weighted Laplacian characteristic polynomial in terms of weighted spanning forests and use this to prove a deletion-contraction relation. We prove various interlacing theorems relating to deletion and contraction, as well as to rectangular tilings, drawing on the work of Brooks, Smith, Stone and Tutte on square tilings. Additionally, we show that the weighted Laplacian also satisfies a vertex analogue of deletion-contraction. We give applications of weighted Laplacian eigenvalues to sparse cuts, independent sets and graph colouring, and establish new cases of a conjecture of Stanley on distinguishing nonisomorphic trees.
On $A_α$-spectrum of joined union of graphs and its applications to power graphs of finite groups

For a simple graph $G$, the generalized adjacency matrix $A_α(G)$ is defined as $A_α(G)=αD(G)+(1-α)A(G), α\in [0,1]$, where $A(G)$ is the adjacency matrix and $D(G)$ is the diagonal matrix of vertex degrees of $G$. This matrix generalises the spectral theories of the adjacency matrix and the signless Laplacian matrix of $G$. In this paper, we find $ A_α $-spectrum of the joined union of graphs in terms of spectrum of adjacency matrices of its components and the zeros of the characteristic polynomials of an auxiliary matrix determined by the joined union. We determine the $ A_α$-spectrum of join of two regular graphs, the join of a regular graph with the union of two regular graphs of distinct degrees. As an applications, we investigate the $ A_α $-spectrum of certain power graphs of finite groups.

A set of graphs are called cospectral if their adjacency matrices have the same characteristic polynomial. In this paper we introduce a simple method for constructing infinite families of cospectral regular graphs. The construction is valid for special cases of a property introduced by Schwenk. For the case of cubic (3-regular) graphs, computational results are given which show that the construction generates a large proportion of the cubic graphs, which are cospectral with another cubic graph.

A celebrated result of Karpelevi\v c describes $Θ_n,$ the collection of all eigenvalues arising from the stochastic matrices of order $n.$ The boundary of $Θ_n$ consists of roots of certain one-parameter families of polynomials, and those polynomials are naturally associated with the so--called reduced Ito polynomials of Types 0, I, II and III.
In this paper we explicitly characterise all $n \times n$ stochastic matrices whose characteristic polynomials are of Type 0 or Type I, and all sparsest stochastic matrices of order $n$ whose characteristic polynomials are of Type II or Type III. The results provide insights into the structure of stochastic matrices having extreme eigenvalues.

The max-plus algebra $\mathbb{R}\cup \{-\infty \}$ is a semiring with the two operations: addition $a \oplus b := \max(a,b)$ and multiplication $a \otimes b := a + b$. Roots of the characteristic polynomial of a max-plus matrix are called algebraic eigenvalues. Recently, algebraic eigenvectors with respect to algebraic eigenvalues were introduced as a generalized concept of eigenvectors. In this paper, we present properties of algebraic eigenvectors analogous to those of eigenvectors in the conventional linear algebra. First, we prove that for generic matrices algebraic eigenvectors with respect to distinct algebraic eigenvalues are linearly independent. We further prove that for symmetric matrices algebraic eigenvectors with respect to distinct algebraic eigenvalues are orthogonal to each other.
Lorentzian polynomials on cones and the Heron-Rota-Welsh conjecture
We give a short proof of the log-concavity of the coefficients of the reduced characteristic polynomial of a matroid. The proof uses an extension of the theory of Lorentzian polynomials to convex cones, and reproves the Hodge-Riemann relations of degree one for the Chow ring of a matroid.

We compute the auto-correlations functions of order $m\ge 1$ for the characteristic polynomials of random matrices from certain subgroups of the unitary groups $\U(2)$ and $\U(3)$ by applying branching rules. These subgroups can be understood as analogs of Sato--Tate groups of $\USp(4)$ in our previous paper. This computation yields symmetric polynomial identities with $m$-variables involving irreducible characters of $\U(m)$ for all $m \ge 1$ in an explicit, uniform way.

In a recent series of papers, Hosoya drew the attention to a particular aspect of constructing cospectral graphs by using coalescences: that cospectral graphs can be constructed by attaching multiple copies of a rooted graph in different ways to subsets of vertices of an underlying graph. Our principal focus is to address the expectations and questions raised in Hosoya's papers with regards to this construction. We give an explicit formula for the characteristic polynomial of such multiple coalescences, from which we obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for their cospectrality. We enumerate such cospectral multiple coalescences for a few families of underlying graphs, and show the infinitude of cospectral multiple coalescences having paths as underlying graphs, which were deemed rare by Hosoya.

We give an elementary, case-free, Coxeter-theoretic derivation of the formula $h^nn!/|W|$ for the number of maximal chains in the noncrossing partition lattice $NC(W)$ of a real reflection group $W$. Our proof proceeds by comparing the Deligne-Reading recursion with a parabolic recursion for the characteristic polynomial of the $W$-Laplacian matrix considered in our previous work. We further discuss the consequences of this formula for the geometric group theory of spherical and affine Artin groups.

Let $G$ be a simple graph with vertex set $V(G) = \{v_1, v_2,\ldots, v_n\}$. The Sombor matrix of $G$, denoted by $A_{SO}(G)$, is defined as the $n\times n$ matrix whose $(i,j)$-entry is $\sqrt{d_i^2+d_j^2}$ if $v_i$ and $v_j$ are adjacent and $0$ for another cases. Let the eigenvalues of the Sombor matrix $A_{SO}(G)$ be $ρ_1\geq ρ_2\geq \ldots\geq ρ_n$ which are the roots of the Sombor characteristic polynomial $\prod_{i=1}^n (ρ-ρ_i)$. The Sombor energy $En_{SO}$ of $G$ is the sum of absolute values of the eigenvalues of $A_{SO}(G)$. In this paper we compute the Sombor characteristic polynomial and the Sombor energy for some graph classes, define Sombor energy unique and propose a conjecture on Sombor Energy.
