Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a Weyl arrangement. We introduce and study the notion of $\mathcal{A}$-Eulerian polynomial producing an Eulerian-like polynomial for any subarrangement of $\mathcal{A}$. This polynomial together with shift operator describe how the characteristic quasi-polynomial of a new class of arrangements containing ideal subarrangements of $\mathcal{A}$ can be expressed in terms of the Ehrhart quasi-polynomial of the fundamental alcove. The method can also be extended to define two types of deformed Weyl subarrangements containing the families of the extended Shi, Catalan, Linial arrangements and to compute their characteristic quasi-polynomials. We obtain several known results in the literature as specializations, including the formula of the characteristic polynomial of $\mathcal{A}$ via Ehrhart theory due to Athanasiadis (1996), Blass-Sagan (1998), Suter (1998) and Kamiya-Takemura-Terao (2010); and the formula relating the number of coweight lattice points in the fundamental parallelepiped with the Lam-Postnikov Eulerian polynomial due to the third author.
On the Enumeration and Asymptotic Growth of Free Quasigroup Words

The paper counts the number of reduced quasigroup words of a particular length in a certain number of generators. Taking account of the relationship with the Catalan numbers, counting words in a free magma, we introduce the term peri-Catalan number for the free quasigroup word counts. The main result of the paper is an exact recursive formula for the peri-Catalan numbers, structured by the Euclidean Algorithm.
The Euclidean Algorithm structure does not readily lend itself to standard techniques of asymptotic analysis. However, conjectures for the asymptotic behavior of the peri-Catalan numbers, substantiated by numerical data, are presented. A remarkable aspect of the observed asymptotic behavior is the so-called asymptotic irrelevance of quasigroup identities, whereby cancelation resulting from quasigroup identities has a negligible effect on the asymptotic behavior of the peri-Catalan numbers for long words in a large number of generators.
Generalized Catalan recurrences, Riordan arrays, elliptic curves, and orthogonal polynomials
We show that the Catalan-Schroeder convolution recurrences and their higher order generalizations can be solved using Riordan arrays and the Catalan numbers. We investigate the Hankel transforms of many of the recurrence solutions, and indicate that Somos $4$ sequences often arise. We exhibit relations between recurrences, Riordan arrays, elliptic curves and Somos $4$ sequences. We furthermore indicate how one can associate a family of orthogonal polynomials to a point on an elliptic curve, whose moments are related to recurrence solutions.

We investigate the tree gonality of a genus-$g$ metric graph, defined as the minimum degree of a tropical morphism from any tropical modification of the metric graph to a metric tree. We give a combinatorial constructive proof that this number is at most $\lceil g/2 \rceil + 1$, a fact whose proofs so far required an algebro-geometric detour via special divisors on curves. For even genus, the tropical morphism which realizes the bound belongs to a family of tropical morphisms that is pure of dimension $3g-3$ and that has a generically finite-to-one map onto the moduli space of genus-$g$ metric graphs. Our methods focus on the study of such families. This is part I in a series of two papers: in part I we fix the combinatorial type of the metric graph, while in part II we vary the combinatorial type and show that the number of tropical morphisms, counted with suitable multiplicities, is the same Catalan number that counts morphisms from a genus-$g$ curve to the projective line.

In this paper, we present an involution on some kind of colored $k$-ary trees which provides a combinatorial proof of a combinatorial sum involving the generalized Catalan numbers $C_{k,γ}(n)=\fracγ{k n+γ}{k n+γ\choose n}$. From the combinatorial sum, we refine the formula for $k$-ary trees and obtain an implicit formula for the generating function of the generalized Catalan numbers which obviously implies a Vandermonde type convolution generalized by Gould. Furthermore, we also obtain a combinatorial sum involving a vector generalization of the Catalan numbers by an extension of our involution.
Lucas atoms

Given two variables $s$ and $t$, the associated sequence of Lucas polynomials is defined inductively by $\{0\}=0$, $\{1\}=1$, and $\{n\}=s\{n-1\}+t\{n-2\}$ for $n\ge2$. An integer (e.g., a Catalan number) defined by an expression of the form $\prod_i n_i/\prod_j k_j$ has a Lucas analogue obtained by replacing each factor with the corresponding Lucas polynomial. There has been interest in deciding when such expressions, which are a priori only rational functions, are actually polynomials in $s,t$. The approaches so far have been combinatorial. We introduce a powerful algebraic method for answering this question by factoring $\{n\}=\prod_{d|n} P_d(s,t)$, where we call the polynomials $P_d(s,t)$ Lucas atoms. This permits us to show that the Lucas analogues of the Fuss-Catalan and Fuss-Narayana numbers for all irreducible Coxeter groups are polynomials in $s,t$. Using gamma expansions, a technique which has recently become popular in combinatorics and geometry, one can show that the Lucas atoms have a close relationship with cyclotomic polynomials $Φ_d(q)$. Certain results about the $Φ_d(q)$ can then be lifted to Lucas atoms. In particular, one can prove analogues of theorems of Gauss and Lucas, deduce reduction formulas, and evaluate the $P_d(s,t)$ at various specific values of the variables.
Zeta functions of graphs, their symmetries and extended Catalan numbers
In this paper we study spectral zeta functions associated to finite and infinite graphs. First we establish a meromorphic continuation of these functions under some general conditions. Then we study special values in the case of standard lattice graphs associated to free abelian groups. In particular we connect it to Catalan numbers in several ways, and obtain some non-trivial special values and functional symmetries. Furthermore we relate the values at the negative integers with the more studied Ihara zeta functions, and prove a few minor results that seem not to have been recorded before. Finally we consider the characteristic polynomial of the graph Laplacians, and in particular completely determine its coefficients for cyclic graphs using new analytical methods.

Chase-escape is a competitive growth process in which red particles spread to adjacent uncolored sites, while blue particles overtake adjacent red particles. We introduce the variant in which red particles die and describe the phase diagram for the resulting process on infinite d-ary trees. A novel connection to weighted Catalan numbers makes it possible to characterize the critical behavior.
Two deformed Pascal's triangles and its new properties
In this paper, firstly, by a determinant of deformed Pascal's triangle, namely the normalized Hessenberg matrix determinant, to count Dyck paths, we give another combinatorial proof of the theorems which are of Catalan numbers determinant representations and the recurrence formula. Secondly, a determinant of normalized Toeplitz-Hessenberg matrix, whose entries are binomials, arising in power series, we derive new four properties of Pascal's triangle.

We give a simple recursion labeled by binary sequences which computes rational $q,t$-Catalan power series, both in relatively prime and non relatively prime cases. It is inspired by, but not identical to recursions due to B. Elias, M. Hogancamp, and A. Mellit, obtained in their study of link homology. We also compare our recursion with the Hogancamp-Mellit's recursion and verify a connection between the Khovanov-Rozansky homology of $N,M$-torus links and the rational $q,t$-Catalan power series for general positive $N,M.$

Lewis, Reiner, and Stanton conjectured a Hilbert seriesfor a space of invariants under an action of finite general linear groups using $(q,t)$-binomial coefficients. This work gives an analog in positive characteristic of theorems relating various Catalan numbers to the representation theory of rational Cherednik algebras. They consider a finite general linear group as a reflection group acting on the quotient of a polynomial ring by iterated powers of the irrelevant ideal under the Frobenius map. We prove a variant of their conjecture in the local case, when the group acting fixes a reflecting hyperplane.
Arithmetic of weighted Catalan numbers

In this paper, we study arithmetic properties of weighted Catalan numbers. Previously, Postnikov and Sagan found conditions under which the $2$-adic valuations of the weighted Catalan numbers are equal to the $2$-adic valutations of the Catalan numbers. We obtain the same result under weaker conditions by considering a map from a class of functions to $2$-adic integers. These methods are also extended to $q$-weighted Catalan numbers, strengthening a previous result by Konvalinka. Finally, we prove some results on the periodicity of weighted Catalan numbers modulo an integer and apply them to the specific case of the number of combinatorial types of Morse links. Many open questions are mentioned.
Factoring Catalan numbers
The paper describes a prime factorization of the Catalan numbers. Odd prime factors are distributed in layers in accordance with Legendre's formula. The content of each layer is a network of the intervals, Chebyshev's Segments. The primes of Segment are not calculated and are selected on the basis of its bounds. Layers contain non-repeated primes. Repeated factors are formed when primes are duplicated among different layers. The paper slightly modifies Kummer's theorem for the selection of individual prime factors, also starting from the boundaries of Segments. In conclusion, the reader is offered a software service for factorization of the Catalan number with index up to $10^8$
Compatible Cycles and CHY Integrals

The CHY construction naturally associates a vector in $\mathbb{R}^{(n-3)!}$ to every 2-regular graph with $n$ vertices. Partial amplitudes in the biadjoint scalar theory are given by the inner product of vectors associated with a pair of cycles. In this work we study the problem of extending the computation to pairs of arbitrary 2-regular graphs. This requires the construction of compatible cycles, i.e. cycles such that their union with a 2-regular graph admits a Hamiltonian decomposition. We prove that there are at least $(n-2)!/4$ such cycles for any 2-regular graph. We also find a connection to breakpoint graphs when the graph only has double edges. We end with a comparison of the lower bound on the number of randomly selected cycles needed to generate a basis of $\mathbb{R}^{(n-3)!}$, using the super Catalan numbers, and our lower bound for compatible cycles.
Legendre's formula and $p$-adic analysis
In number theory, we know Legendre's formula $ v_p(n!) = \sum_{k \ge 1} \lfloor \frac{n}{p^k} \rfloor $, which calculates the $p$-adic valuation of the factorial, i.e. the exponent of the greatest power of a prime $p$ that divides $n!$. There is also the second (or alternative) equality $ v_p (n!) = \frac{n-s_p(n)}{p-1} $ where $s_p(n)$ is the $p$-adic weight of $n$ or the sum of digits of $n$ in base $p$. Both kinds of Legendre's formula allow us to determine valuations of the natural number, the odd factorial, binomial coefficients, Catalan numbers, and other combinatorial objects. The article examines the relationship between the $p$-adic valuation and $p$-adic weight and considers their increments. The arithmetic of the $p$-adic increments is proposed.

We study a family of sequences $c_n(a_2,\ldots,a_r)$, where $r\ge2$ and $a_2,\ldots,a_r$ are real parameters. We find a sufficient condition for positive definiteness of the sequence $c_n(a_2,\ldots,a_r)$ and check several examples from OEIS. We also study relations of these sequences with the free and monotonic convolution.
Stack sorting with restricted stacks

The (classical) problem of characterizing and enumerating permutations that can be sorted using two stacks connected in series is still largely open. In the present paper we address a related problem, in which we impose restrictions both on the procedure and on the stacks. More precisely, we consider a greedy algorithm where we perform the rightmost legal operation (here "rightmost" refers to the usual representation of stack sorting problems). Moreover, the first stack is required to be $σ$-avoiding, for some permutation $σ$, meaning that, at each step, the elements maintained in the stack avoid the pattern $σ$ when read from top to bottom. Since the set of permutations which can be sorted by such a device (which we call $σ$-machine) is not always a class, it would be interesting to understand when it happens. We will prove that the set of $σ$-machines whose associated sortable permutations are not a class is counted by Catalan numbers. Moreover, we will analyze two specific $σ$-machines in full details (namely when $σ=321$ and $σ=123$), providing for each of them a complete characterization and enumeration of sortable permutations.
Kostka Numbers and Longest Increasing Subsequences
A classical bijection relates certain Kostka numbers, the Catalan numbers, and permutations of length $n$ with longest increasing subsequence (LIS) of length at most $2.$ We generalize this bijection and find Kostka numbers which count the number of permutations of $n$ with LIS length at most $w,$ the number of permutations with $(1, \cdots, w)$ as a LIS, and other similar subsets of permutations.
Spectral zeta functions

This paper discusses the simplest examples of spectral zeta functions, especially those associated with graphs, a subject which has not been much studied. The analogy and the similar structure of these functions, such as their parallel definition in terms of the heat kernel and their functional equations, are emphasized. Another theme is to point out various contexts in which these non-classical zeta functions appear. This includes Eisenstein series, the Langlands program, Verlinde formulas, Riemann hypotheses, Catalan numbers, Dedekind sums, and hypergeometric functions. Several open-ended problems are suggested with the hope of stimulating further research.

It is known that the monodromy group of each cover of a general curve of genus g>3 equals either the symmetric or the alternating group. The classical Catalan numbers count the minimal degree covers (with symmetric monodromy) of a general curve of even genus. We solve the analogous problem for the alternating group and we determine the number of alternating covers of minimal degree 2g+1 of a general curve of genus g.
