Upper bounds for ordered Ramsey numbers of forests and bounded-degree graphs
We prove the following two upper bounds for ordered Ramsey numbers:
(1) Every ordered forest $F$ on $n$ vertices satisfies $R_{<}(F,F)=O(n^{1+\lceil\logχ_{<}(F)\rceil})$. This in particular answers a question of Geneson, Holmes, Liu, Neidinger, Pehova and Wass.
(2) There is a function $f$ such that, for every fixed ordered graph $H$ with maximum degree at most $Δ$ and interval chromatic number at most $k$, it holds that $R_{<}(H,K_n)=O_H(n^{f(Δ,k)})$.
Proof of the Pach-Tardos conjecture
We prove that for every acyclic matrix pattern $P$ it holds that $\operatorname{Ex}(n,P) \leq n^{1+O_P(1/\log\log n)}$.
Multicolor Ramsey numbers of ordered matchings
For an ordered graph $H$ and an integer $q \geq 2$, let $r_{<}(H;q)$ denote the $q$-color ordered Ramsey number of $H$. Conlon, Fox, Lee and Sudakov asked whether, for every $q \geq 3$, there is a constant $c_q$ such that $r_{<}(M;q) \leq n^{c_q\log n}$ for every ordered matching $M$ on $n$ vertices. We answer this negatively in a strong form: for every $q \geq 2$, there is $c_q>0$ such that almost every perfect matching $M$ on $[n]$ satisfies $r_{<}(M;q)>2^{c_q(\log n)^q/(\log\log n)^{q-1}}$. This matches the general upper bound up to a factor of $(\log\log n)^{q-1}$ in the exponent. We also give two applications. First, we prove the lower bound conjectured by Fox, He and Wigderson for multicolor Ramsey numbers of acyclic digraphs of bounded degree. Second, we strengthen a result of Axenovich, Rollin and Ueckerdt by giving a superquasipolynomial lower bound on the maximum chromatic number of $M$-free ordered graphs, for almost every perfect matching $M$ on $[n]$.
Multicolor $K_r$-Tilings with High Discrepancy
We study the minimum degree threshold $δ_{r,q}$ guaranteeing the existence of $K_r$-tilings of high discrepancy in any $q$-edge-coloring. Balogh, Csaba, Pluhár and Treglown handled the 2-color case, proving that $δ_{r,2} = \frac{r}{r+1}$ for all $r \geq 3$. Here we determine $δ_{r,q}$ for all $q$ large enough, namely $q \geq \binom{r}{2}$. For example, we show that for $r \geq 4$, $δ_{r,q} = \frac{r}{r+1}$ for $\binom{r}{2} \leq q \leq \binom{r+1}{2}$ and $δ_{r,q} = \frac{r-1}{r}$ for $q \geq \binom{r+1}{2}+2$. Thus, $δ_{r,q}$ has a phase transition at $q = \binom{r+1}{2}$, where it drops from $\frac{r}{r+1}$ and then stabilizes at the existence threshold $\frac{r-1}{r}$. We also show that $δ_{r,q} \leq \frac{r}{r+1}$ for all $r,q$, supplementing and giving a new proof for the result of Balogh, Csaba, Pluhár and Treglown.
