Upper $k$-Star-Forming Sets, $k$-Independence, and Upper Domination
For a positive integer $k$, let $β_k(G)$ be the maximum cardinality of a vertex set inducing maximum degree less than $k$, and let $SF_k(G)$ be the maximum cardinality of a minimal $k$-star-forming set. The known inequality $β_k(G)\le SF_k(G)$ suggests asking when equality holds. We place this question in the framework of upper domination: at $k=1$, $β_1(G)=α(G)$ and $SF_1(G)=Γ(G)$, so the classical equality $Γ=α$ on bipartite graphs is exactly the first member of the proposed hierarchy. We prove the equality for complete bipartite graphs for every $k$, obtaining \[ β_k(K_{a,b})=SF_k(K_{a,b})=\max\{a,b,2k-2\}\qquad(a,b\ge k), \] and record the elementary low-degree case $Δ(G)<k$. For $k=2$ we derive certificate restrictions for minimal $2$-star-forming sets in bipartite graphs. For chain graphs we go further: we prove $β_2(G)=SF_2(G)$ and obtain an exact formula for their common value. The proof uses the nested-neighborhood structure together with a classification of witnesses to the indispensability of a high internal-degree vertex. We retain the equality problem for chain graphs as a conjecture only for $k\ge3$, and formulate the broader bipartite conjecture. We also determine the upper domination number of every rectangular grid and combine it with the known exact dissociation number to compare $Γ$, $β_2$, and $SF_2$. In particular, $Γ=β_2$ on every even-by-even rectangular grid, while $β_2\le SF_2$ always; this motivates a grid equality conjecture whose even-by-even case would yield a three-parameter identity.
Sub-quorum colorings of some infinite families of caterpillars
A partition $π=\{V_{1},V_{2},...,V_{k}\}$ of the vertex set $V$ of a graph $G$ into $k$ color classes $V_{i},$ with $i\in\{1,...,k\}$ is called a {\it quorum coloring} if for every vertex $v\in V,$ at least half of the vertices in the closed neighborhood $N[v]$ of $v$ have the same color as $v.$ The maximum cardinality of a quorum coloring of $G$ is called the {\it quorum coloring number} of $G$ and is denoted by $ψ_{q}(G).$ A {\it sub-quorum coloring} of $G$ is an onto partial function $f:V\rightarrow\left\{1,2,\ldots,\ell\right\}$ having the property that for every vertex $v\in V,$ if $f(v)$ is defined, then at least half of the vertices in $N[v]$ having an image by $f$, have the same color as $v.$ The {\it sub-quorum coloring number} $ψ_{sq}(G)$ equals the maximum value $\ell$ in a sub-quorum coloring of $G.$ In this paper, we determine the exact value of the sub-quorum coloring number for some infinite families of caterpillars including complete $n$-tuple caterpillars and complete caterpillars with minimum spine-vertex degree three.
Sub-quorum colorings of graphs
A sub-quorum coloring is a partial vertex coloring in which every colored vertex sees at least half of its colored closed neighborhood in its own color. Hedetniemi, Hedetniemi, Laskar and Mulder introduced its maximum number of colors, $\psq(G)$, as an open direction in their foundational work on quorum colorings. We establish general bounds, relate $\psq$ to $2$-independence, discuss computational complexity, and determine exact values for several classical families. For rectangular grids $G_{m,n}=P_m\square P_n$, we give a new profile proof of the known dissociation-number formula, equivalent to earlier exact $3$-path vertex-cover results. The proof supplies equality and rigidity information used to establish the same formula for the auxiliary parameter when the representative matching is restricted to one direction. We also obtain a five-sixths inequality for mixed-direction matchings on even-by-even rectangles. Exact transfer certificates establish the sub-quorum coloring formula for all fixed strip widths $2\le m\le11$. For hypercubes, we prove the dimension-free identity $\psq(Q_n)=\bii(Q_n)=2^{n-1}$ for every $n\ge2$. The upper bound for the sub-quorum coloring number follows from Huang's signed adjacency matrix through a restricted energy estimate and an injective linear map. The computer-assisted grid claims use integer arithmetic and are independently reproducible by the accompanying verifier.

A partition $π=\{V_{1},V_{2},...,V_{k}\}$ of the vertex set $V$ of a graph $G$ into $k$ color classes $V_{i}$, with $1\leq i\leq k$ is called a quorum coloring of $G$ if for every vertex $v\in V$, at least half of the vertices in the closed neighborhood $N[v]$ of $v$ have the same color as $v$. The maximum cardinality of a quorum coloring of $G$ is called the quorum coloring number of $G$ and is denoted by $ψ_{q}(G)$. A quorum coloring of order $ψ_{q}(G)$ is a $ψ_{q}$-coloring. The determination of the quorum coloring number or design a linear-time algorithm computing it in a perfect $N$-ary tree has been posed recently as an open problem by Sahbi. In this paper, we answer this problem by designing a linear-time algorithm for finding both a $ψ_{q}$-coloring and the quorum coloring number for every perfect tree whose the vertices at the same depth have the same degree.
