Proof of the Kahn Saks Conjecture
Let $\mathbb{P}(x\prec y)$ be the probability that $x$ precedes $y$ in a uniformly random linear extension of an $n$-element poset $P$, and define the balancing coefficient to be $δ(x,y)=\min(\mathbb{P}(x\prec y),\mathbb{P}(y\prec x))$ with $δ(P)=\max_{x,y}δ(x,y)$. We prove (Theorem 1) that sufficiently large width forces $δ(P)$ to be arbitrarily close to $1/2$, answering a long-standing conjecture of Kahn and Saks. In fact, we prove the stronger result (Theorem 2) that large width forces one of two configurations in our poset: either a nearly uniform order on $k$ vertices, or an almost fixed order on $t$ vertices with one further vertex inserted uniformly among the $t+1$ slots. We also show that, for fixed $k$, the first possibility must occur within any antichain $X$ of size $Ω(n^{2/3})$.

Breaking the Infinite Barrier in the $\frac{1}{3}$--$\frac{2}{3}$ Conjecture
The balance constant is a poset parameter measuring how well random linear extensions can be split according to their relative order on two elements. We give an $\varepsilon$-improvement for the balance constant over the bound by Brightwell, Felsner and Trotter (1995), for some small $\varepsilon>0$. This is the first general result towards the $\frac{1}{3}$--$\frac{2}{3}$ conjecture in over 30 years.

Variance vs. range for linear extensions, and balancing extensions in posets of bounded width
An old conjecture of Kahn and Saks says, roughly, that any poset $P$ of large enough width contains elements $x,y$ which are "balanced" in the sense that the probability that $x$ precedes $y$ in a uniformly random linear extension of $P$ is close to $1/2$. We show this implies the seemingly stronger statement that the same conclusion holds if, instead of large width, we assume only that, for some $x$, the number, $π(x)$, of elements of $P$ incomparable to $x$ is large. The implication follows from our two main results: first, that if $π(P):=\max π(x)$ is large then $P$ has large variance, i.e. there is a $y$ whose position in a uniform extension of $P$ has large variance; and second, that the conclusion of the Kahn-Saks Conjecture holds for $P$ with large variance and bounded width. These two assertions also yield an easy proof of a (not easy) result of Chan, Pak and Panova on "sorting probabilities" for Young diagrams, together with its natural generalization to higher dimensions.

Balancing Extensions in Posets of Large Width
We revisit classic balancing problems for linear extensions of a partially ordered set $P$, proving results that go far beyond many of the best earlier results on this topic. For example, with $p(x\prec y)$ the probability that $x$ precedes $y$ in a uniform linear extension, $δ_{xy} = \min\{p(x \prec y), p(y \prec x)\}$, and $δ(P)=\max δ_{xy}$, we show that $δ(P)$ tends to $1/2$ as $n := |P| \to\infty$ if $P$ has width $Ω(n)$ or $ω(\log(n))$ minimal elements, and is at least $1/e-o(1)$ if $P$ has width $ω(\sqrt{n})$ or height $o(n)$. Motivated by both consequences for balance problems and intrinsic interest, we also consider several old and new parameters associated with $P$. Here, in addition to balance, we study relations between the parameters and suggest various questions that are thought to be worthy of further investigation.

Repeated Angles in the Plane for Angles with Algebraic Tangents
We construct a set of points with $Ω(n^2\log n)$ triples determining an angle $θ$ whenever $\tan(θ)$ is algebraic over $\mathbb{Q}$, matching the upper bound of Pach and Sharir. This improves upon the original construction, which was optimal only for $\tan(θ)=a\sqrt{m}/b$ with $a,b,m$ positive integers.

Saturation Numbers for Minors
The saturation number $\text{sat}(n,\mathcal{F})$ is the minimum number of edges in any graph which does not contain a member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph, but will if any edge is added. We give a few upper and lower bounds for saturation numbers for minors. In particular, we shall show that certain Generalized Petersen Graphs are $K^r$-minor saturated for $6\le r\le 8$.

On the Number of Edges in Maximally Linkless Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A maximally linkless graph is a graph that can be embedded in $\mathbb{R}^3$ without any links, but cannot be embedded in such a way if any other edge is added to the graph. Recently, a family of maximally linkless graphs was found with $m=3n-3$ edges. We improve upon this by demonstrating a new family of maximally linkless graphs with $m\le \frac{14}{5}n$ edges.
