On Sisterhood in the Gale-Shapley Matching Algorithm
Published • View Publication • BIB
Lying in order to manipulate the Gale-Shapley matching algorithm has been studied by Dubins and Friedman and by Gale and Sotomayor and was shown to be generally more appealing to the proposed-to side (denoted as the women in Gale and Shapley's original paper) than to the proposing side (denoted as men there). It can also be shown that in the case of lying women, for every woman who is better-off due to lying, there exists a man who is worse-off. In this paper, we show that an even stronger dichotomy between the goals of the sexes holds, namely, if no woman is worse-off then no man is better-off, while a form of sisterhood between the lying and the "innocent" women also holds, namely, if none of the former are worse-off, then neither is any of the latter. This paper is based upon an undergraduate ("Amirim") thesis of the first author.

Intersecting Families of Permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
A set of permutations $I \subset S_n$ is said to be {\em k-intersecting} if any two permutations in $I$ agree on at least $k$ points. We show that for any $k \in \mathbb{N}$, if $n$ is sufficiently large depending on $k$, then the largest $k$-intersecting subsets of $S_n$ are cosets of stabilizers of $k$ points, proving a conjecture of Deza and Frankl. We also prove a similar result concerning $k$-cross-intersecting subsets. Our proofs are based on eigenvalue techniques and the representation theory of the symmetric group.

Triangle-Intersecting Families of Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A family of graphs F is said to be triangle-intersecting if for any two graphs G,H in F, the intersection of G and H contains a triangle. A conjecture of Simonovits and Sos from 1976 states that the largest triangle-intersecting families of graphs on a fixed set of n vertices are those obtained by fixing a specific triangle and taking all graphs containing it, resulting in a family of size (1/8) 2^{n choose 2}. We prove this conjecture and some generalizations (for example, we prove that the same is true of odd-cycle-intersecting families, and we obtain best possible bounds on the size of the family under different, not necessarily uniform, measures). We also obtain stability results, showing that almost-largest triangle-intersecting families have approximately the same structure.
A sharp threshold for random graphs with a monochromatic triangle in every edge coloring
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\R$ be the set of all finite graphs $G$ with the Ramsey property that every coloring of the edges of $G$ by two colors yields a monochromatic triangle. In this paper we establish a sharp threshold for random graphs with this property. Let $G(n,p)$ be the random graph on $n$ vertices with edge probability $p$. We prove that there exists a function $\hat c=\hat c(n)$ with $0<c<\hat c<C$ such that for any $\eps > 0$, as $n$ tends to infinity $$Pr[G(n,(1-\eps)\hat c/\sqrt{n}) \in \R ] \to 0$$ and $$Pr [ G(n,(1+\eps)\hat c/\sqrt{n}) \in \R ] \to 1.$$ A crucial tool that is used in the proof and is of independent interest is a generalization of Szemerédi's Regularity Lemma to a certain hypergraph setting.
