The (p,q)-Analogues of Bi-Stirling Eulerian Polynomials via continued fractions
We establish Jacobi-type continued fraction expansions for (p,q)-analogues of the bi-Stirling Eulerian polynomials, which refine classical Eulerian statistics on permutations. These polynomials admit equivalent definitions in terms of descents or excedances. The parameters p and q encode refined permutation statistics, including (ldes, rasc) and (cros, nest). Our approach is based on weighted Motzkin path models arising from variants of the bijections of Françon--Viennot and Foata--Zeilberger. As applications, we obtain new results on total positivity and gamma-positivity for several families of enumerative polynomials. Our results unify and extend a number of recent works in the literature.
Coincidences and Growth of Boxed Mesh Patterns
A boxed mesh pattern is a mesh pattern whose selected entries lie in an empty axis-parallel rectangle. We classify coincidences of boxed patterns with classical and vincular patterns, exhibit a genuinely bivincular coincidence, and prove that no boxed--bivincular coincidence occurs for patterns of length at least five. Together with known results, this shows that every boxed pattern of length at least five has factorial growth and hence fails the Stanley--Wilf property. At length four, one exceptional orbit is enumerated by the semi-Baxter numbers, while the remaining exceptional orbit, $\{2143,3412\}$, is unresolved; we conjecture that it has factorial growth.
For Box(123), we derive an exact maximum-insertion identity and prove the subfactorial upper bound $2^{5n}n^{βn}$, where $β=\log_2(2\cos(π/7))<0.85$. A closed enumeration remains open. We also prove a general first-moment formula for boxed mesh patterns that depends only on the length of the underlying pattern; in particular, the expected number of Box(123) occurrences in a uniformly random permutation of length $n$ is asymptotic to $n\log n$.
For Box(12), we identify the occurrence statistic with the up-degree in the strong Bruhat order, obtaining its maximum, its mean, and an exact insertion identity for the distribution polynomials. We conjecture that the coefficients of these polynomials are unimodal.
Sharp Bounds on the Number of Small Cuts
Let $λ$ be the minimum cut value of an $n$-vertex undirected multigraph. For every fixed $α>1$, we prove that there are $O(n^{\lceil2α\rceil-1})$ cuts of size strictly below $αλ$. The exponent is sharp. The proof combines splitting off and sampling with a bound on the size of nested families of vertex sets.
Derandomizing Karger's Contraction Algorithm for Matroids
Karger's randomized contraction algorithm finds a minimum-weight cocircuit of a matroid whenever the cogirth-density ratio is bounded. We prove that the same hypothesis yields a deterministic algorithm with the same exponent. If every contraction minor of rank at least $r_0$ of a matroid $M$ has cogirth-density ratio at most $c$, then a minimum-weight cocircuit of $M$ is computable deterministically in $m^{O(r_0)} n^{O(c)}$ time when the contraction minors of bounded rank have at most $m$ parallel classes, by an algorithm that knows neither $r_0$ nor $c$. As a consequence, we give a deterministic algorithm computing the cogirth of rank-$p$ perturbed graphic matroids in $2^{O(p^2)} n^{O(1)}$ time, fixed-parameter tractable in $p$, settling the cogirth side of a question of Geelen and Kapadia (2018). The extensions of the contraction method carry over deterministically: enumerating all near-minimum 1-cocycles, computing a minimum-weight $k$-cocycle, and computing the Pareto frontier under several positive criteria.
A Refinement of the Fixed--Pixed Points Equidistribution on restricted Permutations
Motivated by a recent conjecture of Bsila, Cox, Hugo, Styron and Zhuang concerning fixed points and pixed points on pattern-avoiding permutations, we prove a bivariate refinement involving descent statistics. Given a set of permutations $Π$, let $\mathfrak{S}_n(Π)$ denote the set of permutations in the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ that avoid every element of $Π$ in the sense of pattern avoidance. For each set $Π$ appearing in their conjecture, we show that the pairs of statistics $(\mathrm{des},\mathrm{fix})$ and $(\mathrm{ides},\mathrm{pix})$ are equidistributed over $\mathfrak{S}_n(Π)$. Our proof is based on explicit ordinary generating functions for the corresponding pattern-avoiding classes.

Motivated by recent work on (re)mixed Eulerian numbers, we provide a combinatorial interpretation of a subfamily of the remixed Eulerian numbers introduced by Nadeau and Tewari. More specifically, we show that these numbers can be realized as the generating polynomials of permutations with respect to the statistics of left-to-right minima, right-to-left minima, descents, and the mixed major index. Our results generalize both the bi-Stirling-Eulerian polynomials of Carlitz-Scoville and the Stirling-Euler-Mahonian polynomials of Butler.
Gamma positivity of variations of $(α,t)$-Eulerian polynomials
In 1977 Carlitz and Scoville introduced the cycle $(α,t)$-Eulerian polynomials $A^{\mathrm{cyc}}_n(x,y, t\,|\,α)$ by enumerating permutations with respect to the number of excedances, drops, fixed points and cycles. In this paper, we introduce a nine-variable generalization of the Eulerian polynomials $A_n(u_1,u_2,u_3,u_4, f, g, t\,|\,α, β)$ in terms of descent based statistics of permutations and prove a connection formula between these two kinds of generalized Eulerian polynomials. By exploring the connection formula, we derive plainly the exponential generating function of the latter polynomials and various $γ$-positive formulas for variants of Eulerian polynomials. In particular, our results unify and strengthen the recent results by Ji and Ji-Lin. In related work to the transition matrix between the Specht and web bases, Hwang, Jang and Oh recently introduced the web permutations, which can be characterised by cycle André permutations. We show that enumerating the latter permutations with respect to the number of drops, fixed points and cycles gives rise to the normalised $γ$-vectors of the $(α,t)$-Eulerian polynomials. Our result generalizes and unifies several known results in the literature.

Consider a matroid where all elements are labeled with an element in $\mathbb{Z}$. We are interested in finding a base where the sum of the labels is congruent to $g \pmod m$. We show that this problem can be solved in $\tilde{O}(2^{4m} n r^{5/6})$ time for a matroid with $n$ elements and rank $r$, when $m$ is either the product of two primes or a prime power. The algorithm can be generalized to all moduli and, in fact, to all abelian groups if a classic additive combinatorics conjecture by Schrijver and Seymour holds true. We also discuss the optimization version of the problem.

A subset $B$ of the ring $\mathbb{Z}_n$ is referred to as a $\ell$-covering set if $\{ ab \pmod n | 0\leq a \leq \ell, b\in B\} = \mathbb{Z}_n$. We show that there exists a $\ell$-covering set of $\mathbb{Z}_n$ of size $O(\frac{n}{\ell}\log n)$ for all $n$ and $\ell$, and how to construct such a set. We also provide examples where any $\ell$-covering set must have a size of $Ω(\frac{n}{\ell}\frac{\log n}{\log \log n})$. The proof employs a refined bound for the relative totient function obtained through sieve theory and the existence of a large divisor with a linear divisor sum. The result can be used to simplify a modular subset sum algorithm.
