Positivity for special cases of $(q,t)$-Kostka coefficients and standard tableaux statistics
Published in Electron. J. Combinat. 6, R41 (1999), 36pp. • View Publication • BIB
We present two symmetric function operators $H_3^{qt}$ and $H_4^{qt}$ that have the property $H_{3}^{qt} H_{(2^a1^b)}[X;q,t] = H_{(32^a1^b)}[X;q,t]$ and $H_4^{qt} H_{(2^a1^b)}[X;q,t] = H_{(42^a1^b)}[X;q,t]$. These operators are generalizations of the analogous operator $H_2^{qt}$ and also have expressions in terms of Hall-Littlewood vertex operators. We also discuss statistics, $a_μ(T)$ and $b_μ(T)$, on standard tableaux such that the $q,t$ Kostka polynomials are given by the sum over standard tableaux of shape $\la$, $K_{\laμ}(q,t) = \sum_T t^{a_μ(T)} q^{b_μ(T)}$ for the case when when $μ$ is two columns or of the form $(32^a1^b)$ or $(42^a1^b)$. This provides proof of the positivity of the $(q,t)$-Kostka coefficients in the previously unknown cases of $K_{\la (32^a1^b)}(q,t)$ and $K_{\la (42^a1^b)}(q,t)$. The vertex operator formulas are used to give formulas for generating functions for classes of standard tableaux that generalize the case when $μ$ is two columns.

Why the characteristic polynomial factors
Published in Bull. Amer. Math. Soc. 36 (1999), 113-134 • View Publication • BIB
We survey three methods for proving that the characteristic polynomial of a finite lattice factors over the nonnegative integers and indicate how they have evolved recently. The first technique uses geometric ideas and is based on Zaslavsky's theory of signed graphs. The second approach is algebraic and employs results of Saito and Terao about free hyperplane arrangements. Finally, we consider a purely combinatorial theorem of Stanley about semimodular supersolvable lattices and its generalizations.

A New Representation of the Riemann Zeta Function $ζ(s)$
A generalization of a well-known relation between the Riemann zeta function $ζ(s)$ and Bernoulli numbers $B_n$ is obtained. The formula is a new representation of the Riemann zeta function in terms of a nested series of Bernoulli numbers.

Generic and Cogeneric Monomial Ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
Monomial ideals which are generic with respect to either their generators or irreducible components have minimal free resolutions derived from simplicial complexes. For a generic monomial ideal, the associated primes satisfy a saturated chain condition, and the Cohen-Macaulay property implies shellability for both the Scarf complex and the Stanley-Reisner complex. Reverse lexicographic initial ideals of generic lattice ideals are generic. Cohen-Macaulayness for cogeneric ideals is characterized combinatorially; in the cogeneric case the Cohen-Macaulay type is greater than or equal to the number of irreducible components. Methods of proof include Alexander duality and Stanley's theory of local h-vectors.

Bosonic formula for level-restricted paths
Published in Advanced Studies in Pure Mathematics 28 (2000) 305-325 • View Publication • BIB
We prove a bosonic formula for the generating function of level-restricted paths for the infinite families of affine Kac-Moody algebras. In affine type A this yields an expression for the level-restricted generalized Kostka polynomials.

Regular nilpotent elements and quantum groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
We suggest new realizations of quantum groups corresponding to complex simple Lie algebras, and of affine quantum groups. These new realizations are labeled by Coxeter elements of the corresponding Weyl group and have the following key feature: The natural counterparts of the subalgebras U(n), where n is a maximal nilpotent subalgebra in g, possess non--singular characters.

Recursions, formulas, and graph-theoretic interpretations of ramified coverings of the sphere by surfaces of genus 0 and 1
We derive a closed-form expression for all genus 1 Hurwitz numbers, and give a simple new graph-theoretic interpretation of Hurwitz numbers in genus 0 and 1. (Hurwitz numbers essentially count irreducible genus g covers of the sphere, with arbitrary specified branching over one point, simple branching over other specified points, and no other branching. The problem is equivalent to counting transitive factorisations of permutations into transpositions.) These results prove a conjecture of Goulden and Jackson, and extend results of Hurwitz and many others.

A q-product tutorial for a q-series MAPLE package
Published • View Publication • BIB
This is a tutorial for using a new q-series Maple package. The package includes facilities for conversion between q-series and q-products and finding algebraic relations between q-series. Andrews found an algorithm for converting a q-series into a product. We provide an implementation. As an application we are able to effectively find finite q-product factorisations when they exist thus answering a question of Andrews. We provide other applications involving factorisations into theta functions and eta products.

Alexander Duality for Monomial Ideals and Their Resolutions
Alexander duality has, in the past, made its way into commutative algebra through Stanley-Reisner rings of simplicial complexes. This has the disadvantage that one is limited to squarefree monomial ideals. The notion of Alexander duality is generalized here to arbitrary monomial ideals. It is shown how this duality is naturally expressed by Bass numbers, in their relations to the Betti numbers of a monomial ideal and its Alexander dual. Relative cohomological constructions on cellular complexes are shown to relate cellular free resolutions of a monomial ideal to free resolutions of its Alexander dual ideal. As an application, a new canonical resolution for monomial ideals is constructed.

Restricted random walks on a graph
Published in Ann. Combinatorics 3, 475-481 (1999) • View Publication • BIB
The problem of a restricted random walk on graphs which keeps track of the number of immediate reversal steps is considered by using a transfer matrix formulation. A closed-form expression is obtained for the generating function of the number of n-step walks with r reversal steps for walks on any graph. In the case of graphs of a uniform valence, we show that our result has a probabilistic meaning, and deduce explicit expressions for the generating function in terms of the eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix. Applications to periodic lattices and the complete graph are given.

Packing Ferrers Shapes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Answering a question of Wilf, we show that if $n$ is sufficiently large, then one cannot cover an $n \times p(n)$ rectangle using each of the $p(n)$ distinct Ferrers shapes of size $n$ exactly once. Moreover, the maximum number of pairwise distinct, non-overlapping Ferrers shapes that can be packed in such a rectangle is only $Θ(p(n)/ \log n).$

Neighborly cubical polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Neighborly cubical polytopes exist: for any $n\ge d\ge 2r+2$, there is a cubical convex d-polytope $C^n_d$ whose $r$-skeleton is combinatorially equivalent to that of the $n$-dimensional cube. This solves a problem of Babson, Billera & Chan. Kalai conjectured that the boundary $\partial C^n_d$ of a neighborly cubical polytope $C^n_d$ maximizes the $f$-vector among all cubical $(d-1)$-spheres with $2^n$ vertices. While we show that this is true for polytopal spheres for $n\le d+1$, we also give a counter-example for $d=4$ and $n=6$. Further, the existence of neighborly cubical polytopes shows that the graph of the $n$-dimensional cube, where $n\ge5$, is ``dimensionally ambiguous'' in the sense of Grünbaum. We also show that the graph of the 5-cube is ``strongly 4-ambiguous''. In the special case $d=4$, neighborly cubical polytopes have $f_3=f_0/4 \log_2 f_0/4$ vertices, so the facet-vertex ratio $f_3/f_0$ is not bounded; this solves a problem of Kalai, Perles and Stanley studied by Jockusch.

A classification of centrally-symmetric and cyclic 12-vertex triangulations of $S^2 \times S^2$
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper our main result states that there exist exactly three combinatorially distinct centrally-symmetric 12-vertex-triangulations of the product of two 2-spheres with a cyclic symmetry. We also compute the automorphism groups of the triangulations. These instances suggest that there is a triangulation of $S^2 \times S^2$ with 11 vertices -- the minimum number of vertices required.
All toric l.c.i.-singularities admit projective crepant resolutions
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is known that the underlying spaces of all abelian quotient singularities which are embeddable as complete intersections of hypersurfaces in an affine space can be overall resolved by means of projective torus-equivariant crepant birational morphisms in all dimensions. In the present paper we extend this result to the entire class of toric l.c.i.-singularities. Our proof makes use of Nakajima's classification theorem and of some special techniques from toric and discrete geometry.
Combinatorial aspects of multiple zeta values
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 5(1) (1998), R38 • View Publication • BIB
Multiple zeta values (MZVs, also called Euler sums or multiple harmonic series) are nested generalizations of the classical Riemann zeta function evaluated at integer values. The fact that an integral representation of MZVs obeys a shuffle product rule allows the possibility of a combinatorial approach to them. Using this approach we prove a longstanding conjecture of Don Zagier about MZVs with certain repeated arguments. We also prove a similar cyclic sum identity. Finally, we present extensive computational evidence supporting an infinite family of conjectured MZV identities that simultaneously generalize the Zagier identity.

Tableaux statistics for two part Macdonald polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Macdonald polynomials expanded in terms of a modified Schur function basis have coefficients called the $q,t$-Kostka polynomials. We define operators to build standard tableaux and show that they are equivalent to creation operators that recursively build the Macdonald polynomials indexed by two part partitions. We uncover a new basis for these particular Macdonald polynomials and in doing so are able to give an explicit description of their associated $q,t$-Kostka coefficients by assigning a statistic in $q$ and $t$ to each standard tableau.

Ground State Entropy of Potts Antiferromagnets: Homeomorphic Classes with Noncompact W Boundaries
Published in Physica A265, 186 (1999) • View Publication • BIB
We present exact calculations of the zero-temperature partition function $Z(G,q,T=0)$ and ground-state degeneracy $W(\{G\},q)$ for the $q$-state Potts antiferromagnet on a number of families of graphs $G$ for which (generalizing $q$ from ${\mathbb Z}_+$ to ${\mathbb C}$) the boundary ${\cal B}$ of regions of analyticity of $W$ in the complex $q$ plane is noncompact, passing through $z=1/q=0$. For these types of graphs, since the reduced function $W_{red.}=q^{-1}W$ is nonanalytic at $z=0$, there is no large--$q$ Taylor series expansion of $W_{red.}$. The study of these graphs thus gives insight into the conditions for the validity of the large--$q$ expansions. It is shown how such (families of) graphs can be generated from known families by homeomorphic expansion.

Noise Sensitivity of Boolean Functions and Applications to Percolation
Published in Inst.HautesEtudesSci.Publ.Math.90:5-43,1999 • View Publication • BIB
It is shown that a large class of events in a product probability space are highly sensitive to noise, in the sense that with high probability, the configuration with an arbitrary small percent of random errors gives almost no prediction whether the event occurs. On the other hand, weighted majority functions are shown to be noise-stable. Several necessary and sufficient conditions for noise sensitivity and stability are given. Consider, for example, bond percolation on an $n+1$ by $n$ grid. A configuration is a function that assigns to every edge the value 0 or 1. Let $ω$ be a random configuration, selected according to the uniform measure. A crossing is a path that joins the left and right sides of the rectangle, and consists entirely of edges $e$ with $ω(e)=1$. By duality, the probability for having a crossing is 1/2. Fix an $ε\in(0,1)$. For each edge $e$, let $ω'(e)=ω(e)$ with probability $1-ε$, and $ω'(e)=1-ω(e)$ with probability $ε$, independently of the other edges. Let $p(τ)$ be the probability for having a crossing in $ω$, conditioned on $ω'=τ$. Then for all $n$ sufficiently large, $P\{τ: |p(τ)-1/2|>ε\}<ε$.
