In this paper we give a computer proof of a new polynomial identity, which extends a recent result of Alladi and the first author. In addition, we provide computer proofs for new finite analogs of Jacobi and Euler formulas. All computer proofs are done with the aid of the new computer algebra package qMultiSum developed by the second author. qMultiSum implements an algorithmic refinement of Wilf and Zeilberger's multi-q-extension of Sister Celine's technique utilizing additional ideas of Verbaeten and Wegschaider.
Spin chains and combinatorics: twisted boundary conditions

The finite XXZ Heisenberg spin chain with twisted boundary conditions was considered. For the case of even number of sites $N$, anisotropy parameter -1/2 and twisting angle $2 π/3$ the Hamiltonian of the system possesses an eigenvalue $-3N/2$. The explicit form of the corresponding eigenvector was found for $N \le 12$. Conjecturing that this vector is the ground state of the system we made and verified several conjectures related to the norm of the ground state vector, its component with maximal absolute value and some correlation functions, which have combinatorial nature. In particular, the squared norm of the ground state vector is probably coincides with the number of half-turn symmetric alternating sign $N \times N$ matrices.

We develop a systematic cluster expansion for dilute systems in the highly dilute phase. We first apply it to the calculation of the entropy of the K-satisfiability problem in the satisfiable phase. We derive a series expansion in the control parameter, the average connectivity, that is identical to the one obtained by using the replica approach with a replica symmetric ({\sc rs}) {\it Ansatz}, when the order parameter is calculated via a perturbative expansion in the control parameter. As a second application we compute the free-energy of the Viana-Bray model in the paramagnetic phase. The cluster expansion allows one to compute finite-size corrections in a simple manner and these are particularly important in optimization problems. Importantly enough, these calculations prove the exactness of the {\sc rs} {\it Ansatz} below the percolation threshold and might require its revision between this and the easy-to-hard transition.
Intersection complexes of fans and toric varieties
In the article math.AG/0102085, Lemma 5.5 was false. Hence the decomposition theorem (Theorem 5.8) and all statements in Section 7 are not proved.

In "Hopf algebra of the planar binary trees", Adv. Math. 139 (1998), no. 2, 293--309, we constructed by induction a graded associative product on the vector space generated by the planar binary trees (resp. the permutations). In the present paper we prove an explicit formula for this product in terms of a partial order on the set of planar binary trees (resp. the weak Bruhat order on the symmetric groups).

The object of this paper is to propose and prove a new generalization of the Andrews-Gordon identities, extending a recent result of Garrett, Ismail and Stanton. We also give a combinatorial discussion of the finite form of their result, which appeared in the work of Andrews, Knopfmacher, and Paule.

We show that for stochastic measures with freely independent increments, the partition-dependent stochastic measures of math.OA/9903084 can be expressed purely in terms of the higher stochastic measures and the higher diagonal measures of the original.
Vertex operators and the class algebras of symmetric groups

We exhibit a vertex operator which implements multiplication by power-sums of Jucys-Murphy elements in the centers of the group algebras of all symmetric groups simultaneously. The coefficients of this operator generate a representation of ${\cal W}_{1+\infty}$, to which operators multiplying by normalized conjugacy classes are also shown to belong. A new derivation of such operators based on matrix integrals is proposed, and our vertex operator is used to give an alternative approach to the polynomial functions on Young diagrams introduced by Kerov and Olshanski.

We find tight estimates for the minimum number of proper subspaces needed to cover all lattice points in an n-dimensional convex body symmetric about the origin. We also find the order of magnitude of the number of (n-1)-dimensional subspaces induced by the lattice points in a large n-dimensional ball centered at the origin.
Two results on tilings of quadriculated annuli
We provide a more informal explanation of two results in our manuscript "Tilings of quadriculated annuli". Tilings of a quadriculated annulus $A$ are counted according to volume (in the formal variable q) and flux (in p). The generating function Phi_A(p,q) is such that, for q = -1, the non-zero roots in p are roots of unity and for q > 0, real negative.
Core percolation in random graphs: a critical phenomena analysis

We study both numerically and analytically what happens to a random graph of average connectivity "alpha" when its leaves and their neighbors are removed iteratively up to the point when no leaf remains. The remnant is made of isolated vertices plus an induced subgraph we call the "core". In the thermodynamic limit of an infinite random graph, we compute analytically the dynamics of leaf removal, the number of isolated vertices and the number of vertices and edges in the core. We show that a second order phase transition occurs at "alpha = e = 2.718...": below the transition, the core is small but above the transition, it occupies a finite fraction of the initial graph. The finite size scaling properties are then studied numerically in detail in the critical region, and we propose a consistent set of critical exponents, which does not coincide with the set of standard percolation exponents for this model. We clarify several aspects in combinatorial optimization and spectral properties of the adjacency matrix of random graphs.
Key words: random graphs, leaf removal, core percolation, critical exponents, combinatorial optimization, finite size scaling, Monte-Carlo.
Remarks on a Paper by Y.Caro and R.Yuster on Turan Problem
Caro and Yuster (Electronic J.Comb 7 (2000)) studied a generalization of the Turan problem, where a certain function (instead of the size) of an F-free graph of order n has to be maximized. We prove that for a wide class of functions the asymptotics of the maximum is given by complete partite graphs.

We consider the groundstate wavefunction of the quantum symmetric antiferromagnetic XXZ chain with open and twisted boundary conditions at $Δ=-{1/2}$, along with the groundstate wavefunction of the corresponding O($n$) loop model at $n=1$. Based on exact results for finite-size systems, sums involving the wavefunction components, and in some cases the largest component itself, are conjectured to be directly related to the total number of alternating sign matrices and plane partitions in certain symmetry classes.

We investigate size Ramsey numbers involving bipartite graphs. It is proved that, if each forbidden graph is fixed or grows with n (in a certain uniform manner), then the extremal function has a linear asymptotics.
The corresponding slope can be obtained as the minimum of a certain mixed integer program. Applying the Farkas Lemma, we solve the MIP for complete bipartite graphs, in particular answering a question of Erdos, Faudree, Rousseau and Schelp (1978) who asked for the asymptotics of the size Ramsey number of (K_{s,n},K_{s,n}) for fixed s and large n.
Generating functions for intersection numbers on moduli spaces of curves
Using the connection between intersection theory on the Deligne-Mumford spaces and the edge scaling of the GUE matrix model (see math.CO/9903176, math.AG/0101147), we express the n-point functions for the intersection numbers as n-dimensional error-function-type integrals and also give a derivation of Witten's KdV equations using the higher Fay identities of Adler, Shiota, and van Moerbeke.
Some connections between Falconer's distance set conjecture, and sets of Furstenburg type
In this paper we investigate three unsolved conjectures in geometric combinatorics, namely Falconer's distance set conjecture, the dimension of Furstenburg sets, and Erdos's ring conjecture. We formulate natural $δ$-discretized versions of these conjectures and show that in a certain sense that these discretized versions are equivalent. In particular, it appears that to progress on any of these problems one must prove a quantitative statement about the existence of sub-rings of $R$ of dimension 1/2.

The sum in the title is a rational multiple of pi^n for all integers n=2,3,4,... for which the sum converges absolutely. This is equivalent to a celebrated theorem of Euler. Of the many proofs that have appeared since Euler, a simple one was discovered only recently by Calabi: the sum is written as a definite integral over the unit n-cube, then transformed into the volume of a polytope Pi_n in R^n whose vertices' coordinates are rational multiples of pi. We review Calabi's proof, and give two further interpretations. First we define a simple linear operator T on L^2(0,pi/2), and show that T is self-adjoint and compact, and that Vol(Pi_n) is the trace of T^n. We find that the spectrum of T is {1/(4k+1) : k in Z}, with each eigenvalue 1/(4k+1) occurring with multiplicity 1; thus Vol(Pi_n) is the sum of the n-th powers of these eigenvalues. We also interpret Vol(Pi_n) combinatorially in terms of the number of alternating permutations of n+1 letters, and if n is even also in terms of the number of cyclically alternating permutations of n letters. We thus relate these numbers with S(n) without the intervention of Bernoulli and Euler numbers or their generating functions.

The main goal of the paper is to present a new approach via Hurwitz numbers to Kontsevich's combinatorial/matrix model for the intersection theory of the moduli space of curves. A secondary goal is to present an exposition of the circle of ideas involved: Hurwitz numbers, Gromov-Witten theory of the projective line, matrix integrals, and the theory of random trees. Further topics will be treated in a sequel.
