On the Existence of Frames of Some Extremal Odd Unimodular Lattices and Self-Dual Zk-Codes
For some extremal (optimal) odd unimodular lattices L in dimensions n=12,16,20,32,36,40 and 44, we determine all positive integers k such that L contains a k-frame. This result yields the existence of an extremal Type I Zk-code of lengths 12,16,20,32,36,40 and 44 and a near-extremal Type I Zk-code of length 28 for positive integers k with only a few exceptions.

Optimal Self-Dual Z4-Codes and a Unimodular Lattice in Dimension 41
Published in Finite Fields and Their Applications 18 (2012), 529-536 • View Publication • BIB
For lengths up to 47 except 37, we determine the largest minimum Euclidean weight among all Type I Z4-codes of that length. We also give the first example of an optimal odd unimodular lattice in dimension 41 explicitly, which is constructed from some Type I Z4-code of length 41.
Some Extremal Self-Dual Codes and Unimodular Lattices in Dimension 40
Published in Finite Fields and Their Applications 21 (2013) 67-83 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, binary extremal singly even self-dual codes of length 40 and extremal odd unimodular lattices in dimension 40 are studied. We give a classification of extremal singly even self-dual codes of length 40. We also give a classification of extremal odd unimodular lattices in dimension 40 with shadows having 80 vectors of norm 2 through their relationships with extremal doubly even self-dual codes of length 40.

An Optimal Odd Unimodular Lattice in Dimension 72
Published in Archiv der Mathematik 97 (2011), 529-533 • View Publication • BIB
It is shown that if there is an extremal even unimodular lattice in dimension 72, then there is an optimal odd unimodular lattice in that dimension. Hence, the first example of an optimal odd unimodular lattice in dimension 72 is constructed from the extremal even unimodular lattice which has been recently found by G. Nebe.

There exists no self-dual [24,12,10] code over F5
Published in Designs, Codes and Cryptogr. 52 (2009), 125-127 • View Publication • BIB
Self-dual codes over F5 exist for all even lengths. The smallest length for which the largest minimum weight among self-dual codes has not been determined is 24, and the largest minimum weight is either 9 or 10. In this note, we show that there exists no self-dual [24,12,10] code over F5, using the classification of 24-dimensional odd unimodular lattices due to Borcherds.

A Complete Classification of Ternary Self-Dual Codes of Length 24
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 116 (2009), 1063-1072 • View Publication • BIB
Ternary self-dual codes have been classified for lengths up to 20. At length 24, a classification of only extremal self-dual codes is known. In this paper, we give a complete classification of ternary self-dual codes of length 24 using the classification of 24-dimensional odd unimodular lattices.

Inequalities and Ehrhart $δ$-Vectors
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 361 (2009), 5615-5626. • View Publication • BIB
For any lattice polytope $P$, we consider an associated polynomial $\barδ_{P}(t)$ and describe its decomposition into a sum of two polynomials satisfying certain symmetry conditions. As a consequence, we improve upon known inequalities satisfied by the coefficients of the Ehrhart $δ$-vector of a lattice polytope. We also provide combinatorial proofs of two results of Stanley that were previously established using techniques from commutative algebra. Finally, we give a necessary numerical criterion for the existence of a regular unimodular lattice triangulation of the boundary of a lattice polytope.

Modular forms for the even unimodular lattice of signature (2,10)
Published • View Publication • BIB
Some years ago, Borcherds described in [Bo1] two methods for constructing modular forms on modular varieties related to the orthogonal group $Ø(2,n)$. They are the so called Borcherds' additive and multiplicative lifting. The multiplicative lifting has been used by Borcherds himself and other authors to construct modular forms with known vanishing locus and interesting properties. The additive lifting has been used to construct explicit maps from some modular varieties $Ø(2,n)$. In this paper we try a more systematic treatment in certain level 2 cases giving connections with Kondo's works

On the Integrality of n-th Roots of Generating Functions
Published in J. Combin. Theory A, 113 (2006), 1732-1745 • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by the discovery that the eighth root of the theta series of the E_8 lattice and the 24th root of the theta series of the Leech lattice both have integer coefficients, we investigate the question of when an arbitrary element f in R (where R = 1 + xZ[[x]]) can be written as f = g^n for g in R, n >= 2. Let P_n := {g^n : g in R} and let mu_n := n Product_{p|n} p. We show among other things that (i) for f in R, f in P_n <=> f mod mu_n in P_n, and (ii) if f in P_n, there is a unique g in P_n with coefficients mod mu_n/n such that f == g^n (mod mu_n). In particular, if f == 1 (mod mu_n) then f in P_n. The latter assertion implies that the theta series of any extremal even unimodular lattice in R^n (e.g. E_8 in R^8) is in P_n if n is of the form 2^i 3^j 5^k (i >= 3). There do not seem to be any exact analogues for codes, although we show that the weight enumerator of the r-th order Reed-Muller code of length 2^m is in P_{2^r}. We give a number of other results and conjectures, and establish a conjecture of Paul D. Hanna that there is a unique element f in P_n (n != 2) with coefficients restricted to the set {1, 2, ..., n}.

Pieces of 2^d: Existence and uniqueness for Barnes-Wall and Ypsilanti lattices
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a new existence proof for the rank 2^d even lattices usually called the Barnes-Wall lattices, and establish new results on uniqueness, structure and transitivity of the automorphism group on certain kinds of sublattices. Our proofs are relatively free of calculations, matrix work and counting, due to the uniqueness viewpoint. We deduce the labeling of coordinates on which earlier constructions depend. Extending these ideas, we construct in dimensions 2^d, for d>>0, the Ypsilanti lattices, which are families of indecomposable even unimodular lattices which resemble the Barnes-Wall lattices. The number Upsilon (2^d) of isometry types here is large: log_2 (Upsilon (2^d)) has dominant term at least (r/4) d 2^{2d}, for any r in [0, 1/2). The Ypsilanti lattices may be the first explicitly given families whose sizes are asymptotically comparable to the Siegel mass formula estimate (log_2(mass(n)) has dominant term (1/4) log_2(n) n^2). This work continues our general uniqueness program for lattices, begun in Pieces of Eight. See also our new uniquness proof for the E_8-lattice.

A Note on Optimal Unimodular Lattices
Published in J. Number Theory, 72 (1998), 357-362 • View Publication • BIB
The highest possible minimal norm of a unimodular lattice is determined in dimensions n <= 33. There are precisely five odd 32-dimensional lattices with the highest possible minimal norm (compared with more than 8*10^20 in dimension 33). Unimodular lattices with no roots exist if and only if n >= 23, n not = 25.

The Shadow Theory of Modular and Unimodular Lattices
Published in J. Number Theory, 73 (1998), 359-389 • View Publication • BIB
It is shown that an n-dimensional unimodular lattice has minimal norm at most 2[n/24] +2, unless n = 23 when the bound must be increased by 1. This result was previously known only for even unimodular lattices. Quebbemann had extended the bound for even unimodular lattices to strongly N-modular even lattices for N in {1,2,3,5,6,7,11,14,15,23} ... (*), and analogous bounds are established here for odd lattices satisfying certain technical conditions (which are trivial for N = 1 and 2). For N > 1 in (*), lattices meeting the new bound are constructed that are analogous to the ``shorter'' and ``odd'' Leech lattices. These include an odd associate of the 16-dimensional Barnes-Wall lattice and shorter and odd associates of the Coxeter-Todd lattice. A uniform construction is given for the (even) analogues of the Leech lattice, inspired by the fact that (*) is also the set of square-free orders of elements of the Mathieu group M_{23}.

New asymptotic bounds for self-dual codes and lattices
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give an independent proof of the Krasikov-Litsyn bound d/n<~(1-5^{-1/4})/2 on doubly-even self-dual binary codes. The technique used (a refinement of the Mallows-Odlyzko-Sloane approach) extends easily to other families of self-dual codes, modular lattices, and quantum codes; in particular, we show that the Krasikov-Litsyn bound applies to singly-even binary codes, and obtain an analogous bound for unimodular lattices. We also show that in each case, our bound differs from the true optimum by an amount growing faster than O(n^{1/2}).

Conference matrices and unimodular lattices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Conference matrices are used to define complex structures on real vector spaces. Certain lattices in these spaces become modules for rings of quadratic integers. Multiplication of these lattices by non-principal ideals yields simple constructions of further lattices including the Leech lattice.
