Let $F$ be a fixed graph. The rainbow Turán number of $F$ is defined as the maximum number of edges in a graph on $n$ vertices that has a proper edge-coloring with no rainbow copy of $F$ (where a rainbow copy of $F$ means a copy of $F$ all of whose edges have different colours). The systematic study of such problems was initiated by Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte.
In this paper, we show that the rainbow Turán number of a path with $k+1$ edges is less than $\left(\frac{9k}{7}+2\right) n$, improving an earlier estimate of Johnston, Palmer and Sarkar.

The theta graph $Θ_{\ell,t}$ consists of two vertices joined by $t$ vertex-disjoint paths of length $\ell$ each. For fixed odd $\ell$ and large $t$, we show that the largest graph not containing $Θ_{\ell,t}$ has at most $c_{\ell} t^{1-1/\ell}n^{1+1/\ell}$ edges and that this is tight apart from the value of $c_{\ell}$.
Some sharp results on the generalized Turán numbers

For graphs $T, H$, let $ex(n,T,H)$ denote the maximum number of copies of $T$ in an $n$-vertex $H$-free graph. In this paper we prove some sharp results on this generalization of Turán numbers, where our focus is for the graphs $T,H$ satisfying $χ(T)<χ(H)$. This can be dated back to Erdős, where he generalized the celebrated Turán's theorem by showing that for any $r\geq m$, the Turán graph $T_r(n)$ uniquely attains $ex(n,K_m,K_{r+1})$. For general graphs $H$ with $χ(H)=r+1>m$, Alon and Shikhelman showed that $ex(n,K_m,H)=\binom{r}{m}(\frac{n}{r})^m+o(n^m)$. Here we determine this error term $o(n^m)$ up to a constant factor. We prove that $ex(n,K_m,H)=\binom{r}{m}(\frac{n}{r})^m+biex(n,H)\cdotΘ(n^{m-2})$, where $biex(n,H)$ is the Turán number of the decomposition family of $H$. As a special case, we extend Erdős' result, by showing that $T_r(n)$ uniquely attains $ex(n,K_m,H)$ for any edge-critical graph $H$. We also consider $T$ being non-clique, where even the simplest case seems to be intricate. Following from a more general result, we show that for all $s\leq t$, $T_2(n)$ maximizes the number of $K_{s,t}$ in $n$-vertex triangle-free graphs if and only if $t<s+\frac12+\sqrt{2s+\frac14}$.

The famous Erdős-Gallai Theorem on the Turán number of paths states that every graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges contains a path with at least $\frac{2m}{n}$ edges. In this note, we first establish a simple but novel extension of the Erdős-Gallai Theorem by proving that every graph $G$ contains a path with at least $\frac{(s+1)N_{s+1}(G)}{N_{s}(G)}+s-1$ edges, where $N_j(G)$ denotes the number of $j$-cliques in $G$ for $1\leq j\leqω(G)$. We also construct a family of graphs which shows our extension improves the estimate given by Erdős-Gallai Theorem. Among applications, we show, for example, that the main results of \cite{L17}, which are on the maximum possible number of $s$-cliques in an $n$-vertex graph without a path with $l$ vertices (and without cycles of length at least $c$), can be easily deduced from this extension. Indeed, to prove these results, Luo \cite{L17} generalized a classical theorem of Kopylov and established a tight upper bound on the number of $s$-cliques in an $n$-vertex 2-connected graph with circumference less than $c$. We prove a similar result for an $n$-vertex 2-connected graph with circumference less than $c$ and large minimum degree. We conclude this paper with an application of our results to a problem from spectral extremal graph theory on consecutive lengths of cycles in graphs.

Given a positive integer $p$ and a graph $G$ with degree sequence $d_1,\dots,d_n$, we define $e_p(G)=\sum_{i=1}^n d_i^p$. Caro and Yuster introduced a Turán-type problem for $e_p(G)$: Given a positive integer $p$ and a graph $H$, determine the function $ex_p(n,H)$, which is the maximum value of $e_p(G)$ taken over all graphs $G$ on $n$ vertices that do not contain $H$ as a subgraph. Clearly, $ex_1(n,H)=2ex(n,H)$, where $ex(n,H)$ denotes the classical Turán number. Caro and Yuster determined the function $ex_p(n, P_\ell)$ for sufficiently large $n$, where $p\geq 2$ and $P_\ell$ denotes the path on $\ell$ vertices. In this paper, we generalise this result and determine $ex_p(n,F)$ for sufficiently large $n$, where $p\geq 2$ and $F$ is a linear forest. We also determine $ex_p(n,S)$, where $S$ is a star forest; and $ex_p(n,B)$, where $B$ is a broom graph with diameter at most six.
On the Turán number of ordered forests
An ordered graph $H$ is a simple graph with a linear order on its vertex set. The corresponding Turán problem, first studied by Pach and Tardos, asks for the maximum number $\text{ex}_<(n,H)$ of edges in an ordered graph on $n$ vertices that does not contain $H$ as an ordered subgraph. It is known that $\text{ex}_<(n,H) > n^{1+\varepsilon}$ for some positive $\varepsilon=\varepsilon(H)$ unless $H$ is a forest that has a proper 2-coloring with one color class totally preceding the other one. Making progress towards a conjecture of Pach and Tardos, we prove that $\text{ex}_<(n,H) =n^{1+o(1)}$ holds for all such forests that are "degenerate" in a certain sense. This class includes every forest for which an $n^{1+o(1)}$ upper bound was previously known, as well as new examples. Our proof is based on a density-increment argument.

The Turán number of a graph $H$, denoted by $ex(n,H)$, is the maximum number of edges in any graph on $n$ vertices which does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. Let $P_{k}$ denote the path on $k$ vertices and let $mP_{k}$ denote $m$ disjoint copies of $P_{k}$. Bushaw and Kettle [Turán numbers of multiple paths and equibipartite forests, Combin. Probab. Comput. 20(2011) 837--853] determined the exact value of $ex(n,kP_\ell)$ for large values of $n$. Yuan and Zhang [The Turán number of disjoint copies of paths, Discrete Math. 340(2)(2017) 132--139] completely determined the value of $ex(n,kP_3)$ for all $n$, and also determined $ex(n,F_m)$, where $F_m$ is the disjoint union of $m$ paths containing at most one odd path. They also determined the exact value of $ex(n,P_3\cup P_{2\ell+1})$ for $n\geq 2\ell+4$. Recently, Bielak and Kieliszek [The Turán number of the graph $2P_5$, Discuss. Math. Graph Theory 36(2016) 683--694], Yuan and Zhang [Turán numbers for disjoint paths, arXiv: 1611.00981v1] independently determined the exact value of $ex(n,2P_5)$. In this paper, we show that $ex(n,2P_{7})=\max\{[n,14,7],5n-14\}$ for all $n \ge 14$, where $[n,14,7]=(5n+91+r(r-6))/2$, $n-13\equiv r\,(\text{mod }6)$ and $0\leq r< 6$.
A short proof of a lower bound for Turán numbers
Let $F$ be a strictly balanced $r$-uniform hypergraph with $e>2$ edges and $r$-density $m$. We give a new short proof of the fact that the Turán number $\ex(n, F)$ is greater than $c\, n^{r-1/m} (\log n)^{1/(e-1)}$ where $c$ depends only on $F$. The previous proof of this for $r=2$ by Bohman and Keevash and for $r \ge 3$ by Bennett and Bohman used a random greedy process and its analysis using the differential equations method. Our proof uses elementary probabilistic arguments together with a (nontrivial) classical result about independent sets in hypergraphs.

A classical result of Bondy and Simonovits in extremal graph theory states that if a graph on $n$ vertices contains no cycle of length $2k$ then it has at most $O(n^{1+1/k})$ edges. However, matching lower bounds are only known for $k=2,3,5$.
In this paper we study ordered variants of this problem and prove some tight estimates for a certain class of ordered cycles that we call bordered cycles. In particular, we show that the maximum number of edges in an ordered graph avoiding bordered cycles of length at most $2k$ is $Θ(n^{1+1/k})$.
Strengthening the result of Bondy and Simonovits in the case of 6-cycles, we also show that it is enough to forbid these bordered orderings of the 6-cycle to guarantee an upper bound of $O(n^{4/3})$ on the number of edges.

We consider the Turán-type problem of bounding the size of a set $M \subseteq \mathbb{F}_2^n$ that does not contain a linear copy of a given fixed set $N \subseteq \mathbb{F}_2^k$, where $n$ is large compared to $k$. An Erdős-Stone type theorem [5] in this setting gives a bound that is tight up to a $o(2^n)$ error term; our first main result gives a stability version of this theorem, showing that such an $M$ that is close in size to the upper bound in [5] is close in edit distance to the obvious extremal example. Our second result shows that the error term in [5] is exactly controlled by the solution to one of a class of `sparse' extremal problems, and in many cases eliminates the error term completely to give a sharp upper bound on $|M|$.
The linear Turán number of the k-fan
A hypergraph is linear if any two edges intersect in at most one vertex. For a fixed $k$-uniform family ${\cal{F}}$ of hypergraphs, the linear Turán number ${\rm ex}_{\rm lin}(n,{\cal{F}})$ is the maximum number of edges in a $k$-uniform linear hypergraph $\mathcal H$ on $n$ vertices that does not contain any member of ${\cal{F}}$ as a subhypergraph.
For $k\ge 2$ the $k$-fan $F^k$ is the $k$-uniform linear hypergraph having $k$ edges $f_1,\dots,f_k$ pairwise intersecting in the same vertex $v$ and an additional edge $g$ intersecting all $f_i$ in a vertex different from $v$. We prove the following extension of Mantel's theorem $${\rm ex}_{\rm lin}(n,F^k)\le {n^2 / k^2}.$$ Moreover, $|{\mathcal H}|=n^2/k^2$ holds if and only if $n\equiv 0\pmod k$ and $\mathcal H$ is a transversal design on $n$ points with $k$ groups.
We also study ${\rm ex}_{\rm lin}(n,{\cal{F}})$ where $\cal{F}$ is any subset of the three linear triple systems with four triples on at most seven points.

Motivated by anti-Ramsey numbers introduced by Erdős, Simonovits and Sós in 1975, we study the anti-Ramsey problem when host graphs are plane triangulations. Given a positive integer $n$ and a planar graph $H$, let $\mathcal{T}_n(H)$ be the family of all plane triangulations $T$ on $n$ vertices such that $T$ contains a subgraph isomorphic to $H$. The planar anti-Ramsey number of $H$, denoted $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, H)$, is the maximum number of colors in an edge-coloring of a plane triangulation $T\in \mathcal{T}_n(H)$ such that $T$ contains no rainbow copy of $H$. Analogous to anti-Ramsey numbers and Turán numbers, planar anti-Ramsey numbers are closely related to planar Turán numbers, where the planar Turán number of $H$ is the maximum number of edges of a planar graph on $n$ vertices without containing $H$ as a subgraph. The study of $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, H)$ (under the name of rainbow numbers) was initiated by Horňák, Jendrol$'$, Schiermeyer and Soták [J Graph Theory 78 (2015) 248--257]. In this paper we study planar anti-Ramsey numbers for paths and cycles. We first establish lower bounds for $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, P_k)$ when $n\ge k\ge8$. We then improve the existing lower bound for $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, C_k)$ when $k\geq 5$ and $n\geq k^2-k$. Finally, using the main ideas in the above-mentioned paper, we obtain upper bounds for $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, C_6)$ when $n\ge8$ and $ar_{_\mathcal{P}}(n, C_7)$ when $n\geq 13$, respectively.

Let $k \ge 2$ be an integer. We show that if $s = 2$ and $t \ge 2$, or $s = t = 3$, then the maximum possible number of edges in a $C_{2k+1}$-free graph containing no induced copy of $K_{s,t}$ is asymptotically equal to $(t - s + 1)^{1/s}\left(\frac{n}{2}\right)^{2-1/s}$ except when $k = s = t = 2$.
This strengthens a result of Allen, Keevash, Sudakov and Verstraëte and answers a question of Loh, Tait and Timmons.

The extension of an $r$-uniform hypergraph $G$ is obtained from it by adding for every pair of vertices of $G$, which is not covered by an edge in $G$, an extra edge containing this pair and $(r-2)$ new vertices. In this paper we determine the Turán number of the extension of an $r$-graph consisting of two vertex-disjoint edges, settling a conjecture of Hefetz and Keevash, who previously determined this Turán number for $r=3$. As the key ingredient of the proof we show that the Lagrangian of intersecting $r$-graphs is maximized by principally intersecting $r$-graphs for $r \geq 4$.

Let $F$ be a graph. We say that a hypergraph $H$ is a {\it Berge}-$F$ if there is a bijection $f : E(F) \rightarrow E(H )$ such that $e \subseteq f(e)$ for every $e \in E(F)$. Note that Berge-$F$ actually denotes a class of hypergraphs. The maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex $r$-graph with no subhypergraph isomorphic to any Berge-$F$ is denoted $\ex_r(n,\textrm{Berge-}F)$. In this paper we establish new upper and lower bounds on $\ex_r(n,\textrm{Berge-}F)$ for general graphs $F$, and investigate connections between $\ex_r(n,\textrm{Berge-}F)$ and other recently studied extremal functions for graphs and hypergraphs. One case of specific interest will be when $F = K_{s,t}$. Additionally, we prove a counting result for $r$-graphs of girth five that complements the asymptotic formula $\textup{ex}_3 (n , \textrm{Berge-}\{ C_2 , C_3 , C_4 \} ) = \frac{1}{6} n^{3/2} + o( n^{3/2} )$ of Lazebnik and Verstraëte [{\em Electron.\ J. of Combin}. {\bf 10}, (2003)].

Let $F$ be a graph. A hypergraph is called Berge-$F$ if it can be obtained by replacing each edge of $F$ by a hyperedge containing it. Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of graphs. The Turán number of Berge-$\mathcal{F}$ is the maximum possible number of edges in an $r$-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices containing no Berge-$F$ as a subhypergraph (for every $F \in \mathcal{F}$) and is denoted by $ex_r(n,\mathcal{F})$.
We determine the asymptotics for the Turán number of Berge-$K_{2,t}$ by showing $$ex_3(n,K_{2,t})=\frac{1}{6}(t-1)^{3/2} \cdot n^{3/2}(1+o(1))$$ for any given $t \ge 7$. We study the analogous question for linear hypergraphs and show that $$ex_3(n,\{C_2, K_{2,t}\}) = \frac{1}{6}\sqrt{t-1} \cdot n^{3/2}(1+o_{t}(1)).$$
We also prove general upper and lower bounds on the Turán numbers of a class of graphs including $ex_r(n, K_{2,t})$, $ex_r(n,\{C_2, K_{2,t}\})$, and $ex_r(n, C_{2k})$ for $r \ge 3$. Our bounds improve results of Gerbner and Palmer, Füredi and Özkahya, Timmons, and provide a new proof of a result of Jiang and Ma.

Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a family of $3$-uniform linear hypergraphs. The linear Turán number of $\mathcal F$ is the maximum possible number of edges in a $3$-uniform linear hypergraph on $n$ vertices which contains no member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subhypergraph.
In this paper we show that the linear Turán number of the five cycle $C_5$ (in the Berge sense) is $\frac{1}{3 \sqrt3}n^{3/2}$ asymptotically. We also show that the linear Turán number of the four cycle $C_4$ and $\{C_3, C_4\}$ are equal asmptotically, which is a strengthening of a theorem of Lazebnik and Verstraëte.
We establish a connection between the linear Turán number of the linear cycle of length $2k+1$ and the extremal number of edges in a graph of girth more than $2k-2$. Combining our result and a theorem of Collier-Cartaino, Graber and Jiang, we obtain that the linear Turán number of the linear cycle of length $2k+1$ is $Θ(n^{1+\frac{1}{k}})$ for $k = 2, 3, 4, 6$.
Triangle-free induced subgraphs of polarity graphs
Given a finite projective plane $Π$ and a polarity $θ$ of $Π$, the corresponding polarity graph is the graph whose vertices are the points of $Π$. Two distinct vertices $p$ and $p'$ are adjacent if $p$ is incident to $θ(p')$. Polarity graphs have been used in a variety of extremal problems, perhaps the most well-known being the Turán number of the cycle of length four. We investigate the problem of finding the maximum number of vertices in an induced triangle-free subgraph of a polarity graph. Mubayi and Williford showed that when $Π$ is the projective geometry $PG(2,q)$ and $θ$ is the orthogonal polarity, an induced triangle-free subgraph has at most $\frac{1}{2}q^2 + O(q^{3/2})$ vertices. We generalize this result to all polarity graphs, and provide some interesting computational results that are relevant to an unresolved conjecture of Mubayi and Williford.
On a conjecture of Hefetz and Keevash on Lagrangians of intersecting hypergraphs and Turán numbers
Let $S^r(n)$ be the $r$-graph on $n$ vertices with parts $A$ and $B$, where the edges consist of all $r$-tuples with $1$ vertex in $A$ and $r-1$ vertices in $B$, and the sizes of $A$ and $B$ are chosen to maximise the number of edges. Let $M_t^r$ be the $r$-graph with $t$ pairwise disjoint edges. Given an $r$-graph $F$ and a positive integer $p\geq |V(F)|$, we define the {\em extension} of $F$, denoted by $H_{p}^{F}$ as follows: Label the vertices of $F$ as $v_1,\dots,v_{|V(F)|}$. Add new vertices $v_{|V(F)|+1},\dots,v_{p}$. For each pair of vertices $v_i,v_j, 1\le i<j \le p$ not contained in an edge of $F$, we add a set $B_{ij}$ of $r-2$ new vertices and the edge $\{v_i,v_j\} \cup B_{ij}$, where the $B_{ij}$ 's are pairwise disjoint over all such pairs $\{i,j\}$. Hefetz and Keevash conjectured that the Turán number of the extension of $M_2^r$ is ${1 \over r}n\cdot{{r-1\over r}n \choose r-1}$ for $r \ge 4$ and sufficiently large $n$. Moreover, if $n$ is sufficiently large and $G$ is an $H_{2r}^{M_2^r}$-free $r$-graph with $n$ vertices and ${1 \over r}n\cdot{{r-1\over r}n \choose r-1}$ edges, then $G$ is isomorphic to $S^r(n)$. In this paper, we confirm the above conjecture for $r=4$.

Given a family $\mathcal{F}$ of $r$-graphs, the Turán number of $\mathcal{F}$ for a given positive integer $N$, denoted by $ex(N,\mathcal{F})$, is the maximum number of edges of an $r$-graph on $N$ vertices that does not contain any member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. For given $r\geq 3$, a complete $r$-uniform Berge-hypergraph, denoted by { ${K}_n^{(r)}$}, is an $r$-uniform hypergraph of order $n$ with the core sequence $v_{1}, v_{2}, \ldots ,v_{n}$ as the vertices and distinct edges $e_{ij},$ $1\leq i<j\leq n,$ where every $e_{ij}$ contains both $v_{i}$ and $v_{j}$. Let $\mathcal{F}^{(r)}_n$ be the family of complete $r$-uniform Berge-hypergraphs of order $n.$ We determine precisely $ex(N,\mathcal{F}^{(3)}_{n})$ for $n \geq 13$. We also find the extremal hypergraphs avoiding $\mathcal{F}^{(3)}_{n}$.
