Uniform Mixing and Association Schemes

We consider continuous-time quantum walks on distance-regular graphs of small diameter. Using results about the existence of complex Hadamard matrices in association schemes, we determine which of these graphs have quantum walks that admit uniform mixing.
First we apply a result due to Chan to show that the only strongly regular graphs that admit instantaneous uniform mixing are the Paley graph of order nine and certain graphs corresponding to regular symmetric Hadamard matrices with constant diagonal. Next we prove that if uniform mixing occurs on a bipartite graph X with n vertices, then n is divisible by four. We also prove that if X is bipartite and regular, then n is the sum of two integer squares. Our work on bipartite graphs implies that uniform mixing does not occur on C_{2m} for m >= 3. Using a result of Haagerup, we show that uniform mixing does not occur on C_p for any prime p such that p >= 5. In contrast to this result, we see that epsilon-uniform mixing occurs on C_p for all primes p.

We give two "lifting" constructions of strongly regular Cayley graphs. In the first construction we "lift" a cyclotomic strongly regular graph by using a subdifference set of the Singer difference set. The second construction uses quadratic forms over finite fields and it is a common generalization of the construction of the affine polar graphs \cite{CK86} and a construction of strongly regular Cayley graphs given in \cite{FWXY}. The two constructions are related in the following way: The second construction can be viewed as a recursive construction, and the strongly regular Cayley graphs obtained from the first construction can serve as starters for the second construction. We also obtain association schemes from the second construction.

We study a generalization of strongly regular graphs. We call a graph strongly walk-regular if there is an $\ell >1$ such that the number of walks of length $\ell$ from a vertex to another vertex depends only on whether the two vertices are the same, adjacent, or not adjacent. We will show that a strongly walk-regular graph must be an empty graph, a complete graph, a strongly regular graph, a disjoint union of complete bipartite graphs of the same size and isolated vertices, or a regular graph with four eigenvalues. Graphs from the first three families in this list are indeed strongly $\ell$-walk-regular for all $\ell$, whereas the graphs from the fourth family are $\ell$-walk-regular for every odd $\ell$. The case of regular graphs with four eigenvalues is the most interesting (and complicated) one. Such graphs cannot be strongly $\ell$-walk-regular for even $\ell$. We will characterize the case that regular four-eigenvalue graphs are strongly $\ell$-walk-regular for every odd $\ell$, in terms of the eigenvalues. There are several examples of infinite families of such graphs. We will show that every other regular four-eigenvalue graph can be strongly $\ell$-walk-regular for at most one $\ell$. There are several examples of infinite families of such graphs that are strongly 3-walk-regular. It however remains open whether there are any graphs that are strongly $\ell$-walk-regular for only one particular $\ell$ different from 3.

In this paper, generalizing the result in \cite{GXY}, we construct strongly regular Cayley graphs by using union of cyclotomic classes of $\F_q$ and Gauss sums of index $w$, where $w\geq 2$ is even. In particular, we obtain three infinite families of strongly regular graphs with new parameters.

In this paper, we give constructions of strongly regular Cayley graphs and skew Hadamard difference sets. Both constructions are based on choosing cyclotomic classes in finite fields, and our results generalize ten of the eleven sporadic examples of cyclotomic strongly regular graphs given by Schmidt and White [24] and several of subfield examples into infinite families. These infinite families of strongly regular graphs have new parameters. The main tools that we employed are relative Gauss sums instead of explicit evaluations of Gauss sums.

We give a combinatorial characterization of graphs whose normalized Laplacian has three distinct eigenvalues. Strongly regular graphs and complete bipartite graphs are examples of such graphs, but we also construct more exotic families of examples from conference graphs, projective planes, and certain quasi-symmetric designs.

In this paper, we give a construction of strongly regular Cayley graphs and a construction of skew Hadamard difference sets. Both constructions are based on choosing cyclotomic classes in finite fields, and they generalize the constructions given by Feng and Xiang \cite{FX111,FX113}. Three infinite families of strongly regular graphs with new parameters are obtained. The main tools that we employed are index 2 Gauss sums, instead of cyclotomic numbers.

In this paper, we give a complete description of strongly regular graphs with parameters ((n^2+3n-1)^2,n^2(n+3),1,n(n+1)). All possible such graphs are: the lattice graph $L_{3,3}$ with parameters (9,4,1,2), the Brouwer-Haemers graph with parameters (81,20,1,6), and the Games graph with parameters (729,112,1,20).
Some Properties of Strongly Regular Graphs
An approach to the enumeration of feasible parameters for strongly regular graphs is described, based on the pair of structural parameters (a,c) and the positive eigenvalue e. The Krein bound ensures that there are only finitely many possibilities for c, given a and e, and the standard divisibility conditions can be used to reduce the possibilities further. Many sets of feasible parameters appear to be accidents of arithmetic, but in some cases the conditions are satisfied for algebraic reasons. As an example, we discuss an infinite family of feasible parameters for which the corresponding graphs necessarily have a closed neighborhood as a star complement for e.
On a conjecture of Brouwer involving the connectivity of strongly regular graphs

In this paper, we study a conjecture of Andries E. Brouwer from 1996 regarding the minimum number of vertices of a strongly regular graph whose removal disconnects the graph into non-singleton components.
We show that strongly regular graphs constructed from copolar spaces and from the more general spaces called $Δ$-spaces are counterexamples to Brouwer's Conjecture. Using J.I. Hall's characterization of finite reduced copolar spaces, we find that the triangular graphs $T(m)$, the symplectic graphs $Sp(2r,q)$ over the field $\mathbb{F}_q$ (for any $q$ prime power), and the strongly regular graphs constructed from the hyperbolic quadrics $O^{+}(2r,2)$ and from the elliptic quadrics $O^{-}(2r,2)$ over the field $\mathbb{F}_2$, respectively, are counterexamples to Brouwer's Conjecture. For each of these graphs, we determine precisely the minimum number of vertices whose removal disconnects the graph into non-singleton components. While we are not aware of an analogue of Hall's characterization theorem for $Δ$-spaces, we show that complements of the point graphs of certain finite generalized quadrangles are point graphs of $Δ$-spaces and thus, yield other counterexamples to Brouwer's Conjecture.
We prove that Brouwer's Conjecture is true for many families of strongly regular graphs including the conference graphs, the generalized quadrangles $GQ(q,q)$ graphs, the lattice graphs, the Latin square graphs, the strongly regular graphs with smallest eigenvalue -2 (except the triangular graphs) and the primitive strongly regular graphs with at most 30 vertices except for few cases.
We leave as an open problem determining the best general lower bound for the minimum size of a disconnecting set of vertices of a strongly regular graph, whose removal disconnects the graph into non-singleton components.
Strongly regular n-e.c. graphs
A result of Erdös and Rényi shows that for a fixed integer n almost all graphs satisfy the n-e.c. adjacency property. However, there are few explicit constructions of n e.c. graphs for n > 2, and almost all known families of n-e.c. graphs are strongly regular graphs. In this paper we derive parameter bounds on strongly regular n-e.c. graphs constructed from the point sets of partial geometries. This work generalizes bounds on n-e.c. block intersection graphs of balanced incomplete block designs given by McKay and Pike. It also relates to work by Griggs, Grannel, and Forbes' determining 3-e.c. graphs that are block intersection graphs of Steiner triple systems. In addition to these bounds, we give examples of strongly regular graphs that contain every possible subgraph of small order but are not n-e.c. for n > 2.
Complex Hadamard Matrices and Strongly Regular Graphs
Over forty years ago, Goethals and Seidel showed that if the adjacency algebra of a strongly regular graph $X$ contains a Hadamard matrix then $X$ is either of Latin square type or of negative Latin square type. We extend their result to complex Hadamard matrices and find only three additional families of parameters for which the strongly regular graphs have complex Hadamard matrices in their adjacency algebras.
Moreover we show that there are only three distance regular covers of the complete graph that give complex Hadamard matrices.

This is the second report of our work on the construction of directed strongly regular graphs. In our previous work, we constructed a couple of infinite families of new directed strongly regular graphs on the sets of antiflags of partial geometries and group divisible designs. In this paper, we use some collections of antiflags (not the entire set of antiflags) of tactical configurations to construct another couple of infinite families of directed strongly regular graphs. Our construction methods are capable of producing many, if not all, nonisomorphic directed strongly regular graphs with same parameters.
Properties of Codes with Two Homogeneous Weights

Delsarte showed that for any projective linear code over a finite field of characteristic p with two nonzero Hamming weights w1 < w2 there exist positive integers u and s such that w1 = (p^s)u and w2 = (p^s)(u+1). Moreover, he showed that the additive group of such a code has a strongly regular Cayley graph. Here we show that for any proper regular projective linear code C over a finite Frobenius ring with two integral nonzero homogeneous weights w1 < w2, there is a positive integer d, a divisor of the order of C, and positive integer u such that w1 = du and w2 = d(u+1). In doing so, we give a new proof of the known result that any proper regular projective two-weight code code yields a strongly regular graph. We apply these results to existence questions on two-weight codes.

On the edit distance from $K_{2,t}$-free graphs (Extended Version)

The edit distance between two graphs on the same vertex set is defined to be the size of the symmetric difference of their edge sets. The edit distance function of a hereditary property, $\mathcal{H}$, is a function of $p$, and measures, asymptotically, the furthest graph of edge density $p$ from $\mathcal{H}$ under this metric. In this paper, we address the hereditary property $\forb(K_{2,t})$, the property of having no induced copy of the complete bipartite graph with 2 vertices in one class and $t$ in the other. Employing an assortment of techniques and colored regularity graph constructions, we are able to determine the edit distance function over the entire domain $p\in [0,1]$ when $t=3,4$ and extend the interval over which the edit distance function for $\forb(K_{2,t})$ is known for all values of $t$, determining its maximum value for all odd $t$. We also prove that the function for odd $t$ has a nontrivial interval on which it achieves its maximum. These are the only known principal hereditary properties for which this occurs.
In the process of studying this class of functions, we encounter some surprising connections to extremal graph theory problems, such as strongly regular graphs and the problem of Zarankiewicz.
This is an extended version of a paper with the same name now published in the Journal of Graph Theory \cite{jgt_version}. In particular, this version contains Appendix A, which has tables and graphs pertaining to the hereditary property $\forb(K_{2,t})$ for small $t$, and Appendix B, which has the proofs of Lemma 31, Proposition 32, Proposition 33, and Lemma 34.
On the edit distance from $K_{2,t}$-free graphs II: Cases $t\geq 5$
The edit distance between two graphs on the same vertex set is defined to be size of the symmetric difference of their edge sets. The edit distance function of a hereditary property, $\mathcal{H}$, is a function of $p$ and measures, asymptotically, the furthest graph with edge density $p$ from $\mathcal{H}$ under this metric.
The edit distance function has proven to be difficult to compute for many hereditary properties. Some surprising connections to extremal graph theory problems, such as strongly regular graphs and the problem of Zarankiewicz, have been uncovered in attempts to compute various edit distance functions. In this paper, we address the hereditary property $\forb(K_{2,t})$ when $t\geq5$, the property of having no induced copy of the complete bipartite graph with 2 vertices in one class and $t$ in the other.
This work continues from a prior paper by the authors. Employing an assortment of techniques and colored regularity graph constructions, we are able to extend the interval over which the edit distance function for this hereditary property is generally known and determine its maximum value for all odd $t$. We also explore several constructions to improve upon known upper bounds for the function.

We study the transition matrix of a quantum walk on strongly regular graphs. It is proposed by Emms, Hancock, Severini and Wilson in 2006, that the spectrum of $S^+(U^3)$, a matrix based on the amplitudes of walks in the quantum walk, distinguishes strongly regular graphs. We find the eigenvalues of $S^+(U)$ and $S^+(U^2)$ for regular graphs.
