On the arithmetic product of combinatorial species
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce two new binary operations with combinatorial species; the arithmetic product and the modified arithmetic product. The arithmetic product gives combinatorial meaning to the product of Dirichlet series and to the Lambert series in the context of species. It allows us to introduce the notion of multiplicative species, a lifting to the combinatorial level of the classical notion of multiplicative arithmetic function. Interesting combinatorial constructions are introduced; cloned assemblies of structures, hyper-cloned trees, enriched rectangles, etc. Recent research of Cameron, Gewurz and Merola, about the product action in the context of oligomorphic groups, motivated the introduction of the modified arithmetic product. By using the modified arithmetic product we obtain new enumerative results. We also generalize and simplify some recent results of Canfield, and Pittel, related to the enumerations of tuples of partitions with restricted meet.
Normal Order: Combinatorial Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A conventional context for supersymmetric problems arises when we consider systems containing both boson and fermion operators. In this note we consider the normal ordering problem for a string of such operators. In the general case, upon which we touch briefly, this problem leads to combinatorial numbers, the so-called Rook numbers. Since we assume that the two species, bosons and fermions, commute, we subsequently restrict ourselves to consideration of a single species, single-mode boson monomials. This problem leads to elegant generalisations of well-known combinatorial numbers, specifically Bell and Stirling numbers. We explicitly give the generating functions for some classes of these numbers. In this note we concentrate on the combinatorial graph approach, showing how some important classical results of graph theory lead to transparent representations of the combinatorial numbers associated with the boson normal ordering problem.

Enumerative problems inspired by Mayer's theory of cluster integrals
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 11 (2004), #R32 • View Publication • BIB
The basic functional equations for connected and 2-connnected graphs can be traced back to the statistical physicists Mayer and Husimi. They play an essential role in establishing rigorously the virial expansion for imperfect gases. We survey this approach and inspired by these equations, we investigate the problem of enumerating some classes of connected graphs all of whose blocks are contained in a given class B. Included are the species of Husimi graphs (B = "complete graphs"), cacti (B = "unoriented cycles"), and oriented cacti (B = "oriented cycles"). For each of these, we consider the question of their labelled or unlabelled enumeration and of their molecular expansion, according (or not) to their block-size distributions.

Representations of wreath products on cohomology of De Concini-Procesi compactifications
Published in Intern. Math. Res. Notices 2004:20 (2004), 983-1021 • Search Publication
The wreath product W(r,n) of the cyclic group of order r and the symmetric group S_n acts on the corresponding projective hyperplane complement, and on its wonderful compactification as defined by De Concini and Procesi. We give a formula for the characters of the representations of W(r,n) on the cohomology groups of this compactification, extending the result of Ginzburg and Kapranov in the r=1 case. As a corollary, we get a formula for the Betti numbers which generalizes the result of Yuzvinsky in the r=2 case. Our method involves applying to the nested-set stratification a generalization of Joyal's theory of tensor species, which includes a link between polynomial functors and plethysm for general r. We also give a new proof of Lehrer's formula for the representations of W(r,n) on the cohomology groups of the hyperplane complement.

Symplectic operad geometry and graph homology
A theorem of Kontsevich relates the homology of certain infinite dimensional Lie algebras to graph homology. We formulate this theorem using the language of reversible operads and mated species. All ideas are explained using a pictorial calculus of cuttings and matings. The Lie algebras are constructed as Hamiltonian functions on a symplectic operad manifold. And graph complexes are defined for any mated species. The general formulation gives us many examples including a graph homology for groups. We also speculate on the role of deformation theory for operads in this setting.

A classification of plane and planar 2-trees
Published in Theorical Computer Science, 307 (2003), 337-363 • View Publication • BIB
We present new functional equations for the species of plane and of planar (in the sense of Harary and Palmer, 1973) 2-trees and some associated pointed species. We then deduce the explicit molecular expansion of these species, i.e a classification of their structures according to their stabilizers. There result explicit formulas in terms of Catalan numbers for their associated generating series, including the asymmetry index series. This work is closely related to the enumeration of polyene hydrocarbons of molecular formula C_nH_n+2.

Symmetric Hilbert spaces arising from species of structures
Published in Mathematische Zeitschrift 239, 477-513, (2002) • View Publication • BIB
Symmetric Hilbert spaces such as the bosonic and the fermionic Fock spaces over some `one particle space' $\K$ are formed by certain symmetrization procedures performed on the full Fock space. We investigate alternative ways of symmetrization by building on Joyal's notion of a combinatorial species. Any such species $F$ gives rise to an endofunctor $\G_F$ of the category of Hilbert spaces with contractions mapping a Hilbert space $\K$ to a symmetric Hilbert space $\G_F(\K)$ with the same symmetry as the species $F$. A general framework for annihilation and creation operators on these spaces is developed, and compared to the generalised Brownian motions of R. Speicher and M. Bożejko. As a corollary we find that the commutation relation $a_ia_j^*-a_j^*a_i=f(N)δ_{ij}$ with $Na_i^*-a_i^*N=a_i^*$ admits a realization on a symmetric Hilbert space whenever $f$ has a power series with infinite radius of convergence and positive coefficients.

Graphical Enumeration: A Species-Theoretic Approach
An operation on species corresponding to the inner plethysm of their associated cycle index series is constructed. This operation, the inner plethysm of species, is generalized to n-sorted species. Polynomial maps on species are studied and used to extend inner plethysm and other operations to virtual species. Finally, inner plethysm and other operations on species are applied to various problems in graph theory. In particular, regular graphs, and digraphs in which every vertex has outdegree k, are enumerated.
Enumeration of m-ary cacti
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, 24 (2000), 22-56 • Search Publication
The purpose of this paper is to enumerate various classes of cyclically colored m-gonal plane cacti, called m-ary cacti. This combinatorial problem is motivated by the topological classification of complex polynomials having at most m critical values, studied by Zvonkin and others. We obtain explicit formulae for both labelled and unlabelled m-ary cacti, according to i) the number of polygons, ii) the vertex-color distribution, iii) the vertex-degree distribution of each color. We also enumerate m-ary cacti according to the order of their automorphism group. Using a generalization of Otter's formula, we express the species of m-ary cacti in terms of rooted and of pointed cacti. A variant of the m-dimensional Lagrange inversion is then used to enumerate these structures. The method of Liskovets for the enumeration of unrooted planar maps can also be adapted to m-ary cacti.
